Improved Reversibility of Thin-Film Solid Oxide Cells at 500 °C by Tailoring Sputtering Processes for Depositing Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Electrolyte.

The present study investigates the impact of sputtering configurations on the microstructure and crystallinity of thin-film yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolytes for anodized aluminum oxide-supported all-sputtered thin-film reversible solid oxide cells. Employing various sputtering parameters, such as target-substrate distance and substrate rotation speed, the present study reveals distinct surface characteristics and crystalline structures of thin-film yttria-stabilized zirconia. The microstructure analysis includes scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy examinations, uncovering the influence of the process parameters on the surface morphology, roughness, and grain size. X-ray diffraction data illustrate the texture preferences and crystallite characteristics. The electrochemical characterization of the reversible solid oxide cells demonstrates that the optimized sputtering configuration significantly outperforms the others in both SOFC and SOEC modes, showing exceptional current densities of 964 mA/cm2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 500 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further reveals improved charge transfer reactions at the interface of the electrolyte. The enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique microstructure and crystallinity of the thin film of yttria-stabilized zirconia. The record-breaking electrolysis performance of this work at 500 °C underscores the potential of tailored sputtering parameters in optimizing the reversible solid oxide cell performance.

An Amperometric Type NO2 Sensor Utilizing La0.7Sr0.3MnO3−δ -NiO Composite Sensing Electrode

NO2 is an important pollutant of automobile engines and industrial fuels, making it important to quantitatively monitor and control. An amperometric-type NO2 gas sensor was fabricated using yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte with a bi-layered structure and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3−δ -xNiO (LSMO-xNiO, x = 0–0.75) composite sensing electrode (SE) prepared by impregnation method in combination with self-demixing. The samples were characterized using SEM, XRD, and XPS, and their performance as sensors was tested. LSMO-xNiO composite SE particles were formed by de-mixing in the process of treating the precursor at high temperatures and are uniformly dispersed in the YSZ porous backbone. With the increase of NiO content, the SE particles become significantly large. At 450 °C–600 °C, the response currents at a fixed potential have a linear relationship with the NO2 concentrations at 25–700 ppm. Combining stability and sensitivity, the voltage was fixed to −0.25 V. The introduction of NiO into the LSMO sensing electrode effectively improves the performance of the sensor. The sensor based on LSMO-0.5NiO has the highest sensitivity (0.0405 μA/ppm) at 550 °C. Simultaneously, the sensor exhibits good anti-interference ability for CH4, CO2, O2, and NO, but has obvious cross-sensitivity to H2 and NH3. In addition, the response current of the sensor change with the increase of RH.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with 3D Inkjet Printing Modified LSM-YSZ Interface

In this study, pillar shaped yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) 3D microstructures with ∼60 to 90 μm diameter and 12 to 20 μm height are fabricated by 3D inkjet printing to improve the topology of the electrolyte/cathode interface. The microstructures increase the surface area of the cell by ∼2.4% to 4.0% and enhance the connection between the dense YSZ electrolyte and mixed YSZ-lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) cathode. The morphology and microstructure of the YSZ interface are characterized with scanning electron microscopy. Polarization curves confirm that the power density improves by 47% to 107% at 0.55 V, depending on the dimensions of the microstructures, in comparison to a flat interface. The non-linear improvement in power density with the size of microstructures is confirmed by calculating the uncertainty with repeated tests. Based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and distribution of relaxation times analysis, the performance improvement is attributed to changes in the oxygen surface exchange kinetics and O2− diffusivity in the cathode.

Ni migration on porous yttria-stabilized zirconia and yttria-micropatterned fuel electrodes in solid oxide fuel cells

This study investigates the mechanism of Ni migration and methods for preventing Ni migration by utilizing ceramic obstacles that can block or slow Ni movement during solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operation. A patterned thin-Ni model anode on mirror-polished yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrate exhibited dynamic movement during operation, as reported previously. In this study, we attempt to elucidate the mechanism of Ni migration that occurs only on the surface of solid-state Ni by blocking or slowing this movement using porous patterns of different materials. Porous micropatterns of 100 % YSZ and 80 wt% yttria (Y2O3) + YSZ composites were fabricated on a YSZ electrolyte, and velocity changes and blocking of Ni were observed. The porous YSZ structure changed the velocity of the Ni. In contrast, no Ni migration occurred in the Y2O3/YSZ composite porous structure, despite migration occurring in the neighboring smooth YSZ area in the same cell. The Ni-migrated areas were separated by the Y2O3/YSZ porous area, indicating that Ni migration was not caused by microscale differences in temperature or supplied gas diffusion, and Ni moved only on the cell surface, not via Ni-containing gases because temperatures and gases cannot form micropatterns.

One-step preparation of large-size 1.5-μm-thick robust YSZ electrolyte for high CH4 conversion SOFCs at 600 °C

Ultrathin electrolytes can lower the operating temperature of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to below 600 °C, accelerating their commercialization. However, current technologies for fabricating robust electrolytes with large areas and a thickness of a few microns for SOFCs suffer from substantial practical limitations, including high manufacturing costs, intricate technical demands, and multistep fabrication processes. This study introduces a low-cost, high-yield, and facile one-step phase inversion technology to fabricate large-area and shape-variable ultrathin YSZ electrolyte-based SOFCs (disc diameter >12 cm and area of 10 cm × 10 cm). An integrated form of SOFCs with dendritic YSZ microchannels supporting a 1.5-μm-thick dense YSZ thin film was fabricated. The ultrathin electrolyte layer lowered ohmic and polarization losses, enhancing SOFC electrochemical performance. The integrated anode/electrolyte structure overcame the interfacial thermal mismatch, resulting in more than 210 h of long-term stability even with cells operating in rapidly changing environments. The single cell also exhibited a high CH4 conversion efficiency (55%), which was attributed to the fast gas diffusion and excellent catalytic activity within the integrated anode. In addition, our 4 cm × 4 cm flat SOFCs exhibited a high power output (5.1 W) at 600 °C, paving the way for the mass production of ultrathin and robust YSZ electrolytes.

Structural, optical, and electrical characterization of TiO2-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolytes grown by atomic layer deposition

Electrolyte material optimization is crucial for electrochemical energy storage devices. The specific composition and structure have an impact on conductivity and stability, both of which are essential for efficient device performance. The effects of controlled incorporation of TiO2 into a Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique are investigated in this study. The surface chemical composition analysis reveals variations in the Ti oxidation state and a decrease in the O/(Zr + Y + Ti) ratio as TiO2 concentration increases. The formation of acceptor states near the valence band is proposed to reduce the bandgap with the Fermi level. The structural properties indicate that as TiO2 concentration increases, surface homogeneity and crystallite size increase. The contact angle with water indicates a hydrophobic behavior influenced by surface morphology and potential oxygen vacancies. Finally, electrical properties, measured in Ru/TiO2-doped YSZ/Au capacitors operated at temperatures between 100 and 170 °C, showed that the TiO2 incorporation improved the ionic conductivity, decreased the activation energy for conductivity, and improved the capacitance of the cells. This study highlights the importance of the ALD technique in solid-state electrolyte engineering for specific applications, such as energy storage devices.

Research on the novel spinel structure of Cu0.5Ni0.5MnCoO4 and its application in solid oxide fuel cells

In this study, the Cu0.5Ni0.5MnCoO4 (CNMC) material was developed for use in the cathode of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the spinel structure and demonstrated compatibility with Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte at elevated temperatures. The conductivity of CNMC was found to be between 28 and 55 S cm−1 at temperatures ranging from 700 to 900 °C. Oxygen-temperature programmed desorption (O2-TPD) revealed that CNMC powder possesses effective oxygen catalytic characteristics. To enhance performance, CNMC was combined with Gd0.1Ce0.9O2-δ (GDC, H2-bank Co. Ltd.) in a mass ratio of 3:7 (CG37). The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of this composite was measured at 12.8 × 10−6 K−1, closely matching that of YSZ and avoiding the issue of strontium segregation, eliminating the need for a barrier layer between the electrolyte and the cathode. The peak power densities of CG37 reached 1175 mW cm−2 and 905 mW cm−2 at 800 °C and 750 °C, respectively. CG37 underwent testing for 1000 h under constant-current discharge at 600 mA cm−2 and 750 °C, showing a voltage degradation rate of 2.5 %/kh. The cell's microstructure remained intact without any signs of elemental diffusion or segregation, indicating excellent chemical compatibility and stable structural integrity. This research is expected to further advance the study and utilization of novel solid oxide fuel cells.

Optimal Modeling of Ni/YSZ Triple Phase Boundary in Solid Oxide Cells Using First-Principles Calculations

Power generation with renewable energy using solid oxide cells (SOCs) has been widely researched. To solve the existing problems of SOCs, such as degradation and efficiency improvement, it is essential to understand reaction mechanisms on the surface/interface such as triple phase boundary (TPB) composed of catalysts, electrolytes, and gas phases. However, a reliable TPB model has not been uniquely defined to discuss the property. This study focused on the TPB model comprising Ni catalysts, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes, and gas phases, and aimed to theoretically identify a reliable TPB model by using density functional theory calculations. The stable structure of YSZ surface models was first identified considering various oxygen vacancy positions, yttrium atom arrangements, yttria concentration, and YSZ surfaces. Thereafter, a reliable Ni/YSZ interface model was discussed by evaluating various Ni structure types, Ni interfaces in contact with the YSZ surface, and interface positions. As a result, we have proposed a more reliable YSZ surface structure than previous reports and reasonable Ni/YSZ interface models considering the computational cost to discuss the properties of TPB. These findings will contribute to the improved design of SOCs as high-performance energy conversion systems for sustainable energy storage.

Development of Nanostructured Lanthanum Strontium Cobalt Ferrite/Gadolinian-Doped Ceria Composite Electrodes of Solid Oxide Cells Formed by In Situ Polarization.

In the development of nanoscale oxygen electrodes of high-temperature solid oxide cells (SOCs), the interface formed between the nanoelectrode particles and the electrolyte or electrolyte scaffolds is the most critical. In this work, a new synthesis technique for the fabrication of nanostructured electrodes via in situ electrochemical polarization treatment is reported. The lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF) precursor solution is infiltrated into a gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) scaffold presintered on a yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte, followed by in situ polarization current treatment at SOC operation temperatures. Electrode ohmic and polarization resistances decrease with an increase in the polarization current treatment. Detailed microstructure analysis indicates the formation of a convex-shaped interface between the LSCF nanoparticles (NPs) and the GDC scaffold, very different from the flat contact between LSCF and GDC observed after heating at 800 °C with no polarization current treatment. The embedded LSCF NPs on the GDC scaffold contribute to the superior stability under both fuel cell and electrolysis operation conditions at 750 °C and a high peak power density of 1.58 W cm-2 at 750 °C. This work highlights a novel and facile route to in situ construct a stable and high-performing nanostructured electrode for SOCs.

Structural Effects of 3D Inkjet-Printed Ni(O)-YSZ Pillared Electrodes on Performances of Solid Oxide Electrochemical Reactors.

Increasing densities of reaction sites for gaseous reactants in solid oxide electrochemical reactors (SOERs), is a key strategy for achieving enhanced performance in either fuel cell or electrolysis modes. Fabrication of 3D structured components in SOERs can enhance those densities of reaction sites, which is achieved by 3D inkjet printing with high reproducibility, having developed inks with appropriate properties. First, the effects of pillar geometries on SOER performances are predicted through numerical simulations, enabling subsequent 3D printing to focus on the more effective geometries. Herein, the study reports the results of experimental validation of those predictions by evaluating the electrochemical performances of cells with various heights of 3D inkjet-printed Ni(O)- yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) pillars and YSZ pillars. Those measurements prove that increasing pillar heights generally increases SOER peak power densities in fuel cell mode and increased current densities at the thermoneutral potential (1.285V) in steam electrolysis mode, as predicted by simulations. With increasing pillar heights, more limitations in performance enhancement are found with YSZ electrolyte pillars than with Ni-YSZ pillars, again as predicted by simulations. The subsequent microstructural analysis of Ni-YSZ pillars proves the suitability of the Ni(O)-YSZ composite particle ink formulation and the reliability of 3D printing.

External Voltage-Induced Restructuring of the Solid-State Electrode/Electrolyte Interface Revealed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Depth Profiling Analysis.

Solid/solid interfaces between electrodes and electrolytes play an important role in all-solid-state energy devices, while microscopic investigations of the buried interfaces remain challenging. Here, we construct metal|yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)|Au model cells consisting of a metal film cathode (metal (M) = Au, Ni, and Ag), a single crystalline YSZ electrolyte, and a Au film anode, and use quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling analysis to investigate the restructuring of buried interfaces between metal cathodes and YSZ. After applying 2.9 V at 500 °C, interfacial Zr4+ ions in the electrolyte are reduced and then interdiffuse with metal cathode overlayers, forming a miscible ZrM alloy interlayer. The interface restructuring degree follows the sequence of Au|YSZ|Au > Ni|YSZ|Au > Ag|YSZ|Au. Meanwhile, surface segregation of Zr on the cathode surface is also observed, whose degree follows the sequence of Ag|YSZ|Au > Ni|YSZ|Au > Au|YSZ|Au. Notably, the strong ZrM alloy formation enhances the interface restructuring but suppresses the Zr surface segregation. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the interfacial reaction at the buried electrode/electrolyte interface.

Unraveling the pivotal role of heterointerfaces on oxide ion transport in solid oxide fuel cells

Overcoming fundamental key issues affecting performance and stability has been recognized as the most important challenge for the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Here, we employed a multipronged approach based on advanced nanoscale analyses coupled with electrochemical evaluation to elucidate the interrelation among ohmic resistance, oxide ion transport, and cation interdiffusion mainly occurring at the interlayer-electrolyte heterointerfaces. The presence of an interdiffusion layer (IDL), formed from the interdiffusion of Ce, Gd, and Zr during high-temperature sintering of conventional screen-printed gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) interlayer on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte, inadvertently acts as a major barrier to oxide ion transport and results in a significant increase of the ohmic resistance. An effective way to suppress the IDL formation and its oxide ion blocking effect is by alternatively fabricating the GDC interlayer using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), whereby dense layers prepared at a relatively lower deposition temperature without post-growth sintering can be obtained. Consequently, the cell's ohmic resistance is drastically lowered and a significant improvement in cell performance is achieved. These results have major implications for the selection and optimization of cell fabrication processes to mitigate degradation issues associated to heterointerfaces.

Enhanced performance of reversible solid oxide fuel cells by densification of Gd0.1Ce0.9O2−δ (GDC) barrier layer/La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF6428)-GDC oxygen-electrode interface

In reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte and LSCF6428-based oxygen electrode, a GDC barrier layer is used to prevent inter-diffusion of constituents. However, the performance of such RSOC is limited to the achievable density of GDC at prevailing temperatures of traditional fabrication methods. In this work, the GDC barrier layer was densified via infiltration with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) chelated metal precursors sol and subsequent sintering at 1200 °C. The NiO-YSZ fuel electrode-supported RSOCs with YSZ electrolyte, porous or infiltrated GDC barrier layer and LSCF6428-GDC composite oxygen electrode were fabricated. The RSOCs were analyzed with respect to operating temperature (650–800 °C), water partial pressure at fuel electrode (pH2OFE=0.03–0.5 atm), oxygen partial pressure at oxygen electrode (pO2AE=0.02–0.21 atm) and current loading. The performance evaluation, using current-voltage curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), showed that the RSOC with an infiltrated GDC barrier layer exhibited a 32–48% increase in performance in fuel cell (FC) mode in the 650–800 °C range, compared to that of the RSOC with a porous GDC layer. Similarly, in electrolysis cell (EC) mode, comparing current density at 1.3 V, chosen as the reference voltage for ease of comparison, based on a thermoneutral voltage of 1.285 V in electrolysis cell (EC) operation at 750 °C[1], the RSOC with an infiltrated GDC barrier layer exhibited values of over 1.2 A∙cm−2, in contrast to the RSOC with a porous GDC barrier layer, which showed 0.8 A∙cm−2. In the case of the RSOC with infiltrated GDC, a durability test was conducted at 750 °C under an EC current density of 1A∙cm−2for 100 h. Our experimental results demonstrate that the RSOC with an infiltrated GDC barrier layer not only exhibits enhanced performance but also maintains stability. Comparative analysis was conducted using Distribution of Relaxation Time (DRT) analysis of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) data, to further understand the differences between the cells.

Development and performance evaluation of (Sm1-xNdx)0.2O2-δ electrolyte for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell application

Major hurdle for SOFC operation at lower temperature is it’s ion migration through electrolyte crystal lattice reduces as more energy required and lowered number of ion vacancies. In order, researchers from all over the world trying to develop SOFC which operates at lower temperature which let to erupt the electrolyte performance. Currently available electrolyte YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) shows high efficiency above 1100 °C. Fluorite structure doped/codoped ceria electrolyte shows better ionic conductivity below the 1000 °C. In current study ceria co doped with the Sm+3 and Nd+3 having ionic radius close to host ceria through oxalate co precipitation route. Crystallite size and structure is observed through X-ray diffraction for purity of doping with nano crystallite size transpose from 13.21 to 22.21 nm. Furthermore, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) validates maximum 0.2 Codoping achieved through oxalate rought. Moreover grain size and grain boundary compaction enhances with sintering electrolyte pellet at 1300˚C for 2 h observed under FE-SEM. AC and DC conductive properties are studied with diverse codoping percentage and it is analyzed through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Ce with 0.1 codoping Sm+3 and Nd+3 respectively enhances ion migration with minimum activation energy and relaxation time in lattice site.

Boosting the Stability and Performance of SOFCs: A New Approach to Oxygen Storage Capacity Using Lanthanum-Doped Ceria Interlayer Technology

Being carbon neutral is one of the world's most important objectives. More than 65 percent of the countries that emit harmful greenhouse gases have committed to achieving net-zero emissions by the middle of the century.[1] There are numerous essential ways to gather energy for worldwide missions, including fuel cells, solar power, wind power, etc. The growing marketplace of fuel cells is following the trend of green-energy demand. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are gaining popularity in the next-generation energy industry due to their high energy conversion efficiency, fuel flexibility, and low emissions.[2]The main challenges for the commercialization of SOCs that need to address are high performance, long-term durability, and effective cost. Stabilized zirconia such as Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) is commonly used as a self-standing electrolyte support. The inability of zirconia-based electrolytes to react with Sr-rich cathode materials like LSC, LSCF, BSCF, etc. Therefore, the electrodes and the zirconia-based electrolyte must have the best-interlayered buffer structure. Optimizing interlayer microstructures to make them more effective at high-performance ESCs is of great interest. Several Rare-earth doped ceria (RDC) materials, including (Gd, Ce)O2, (Sm, Ce)O2, and (La, Ce)O2, have been used as efficient interlayers to lessen reactivity and preserve ionic conductivity in the interface. However, the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) between the GDC and the YSZ poses a significant problem for starting and halting SOCs. In the present work, we focus on the commercial lanthanum-doped ceria (Ce0.6La0.4O1.8 - LDC) as a buffer layer between the YSZ electrolyte and the LSCF cathode because of its higher oxygen storage capacitance. The reactivity of the YSZ/GDC composite was higher than that of the YSZ/LDC composite. And the total conductivity of the LDC/YSZ composite is higher than GDC/YSZ composite even though LDC has lower conductivity than GDC. Moreover, the mismatching of TEC was reduced by replacing the GDC with the LDC bilayer.Consequently, the maximum power density for the electrolyte-supported cell SOFC with LDC interlayer was ~0.55 W.cm−2 at 1073 K. A variety of additives (Co, Mn, and Cu) was added to the LDC buffer layer to examine the sintering properties. The addition of copper not only obtained the highest microstructural density but also improve mechanical stability under cost-effective processes.

A Study on Electrochemical Properties of Fuel-Electrode-Supported Reversible Solid Oxide Cells

Introduction Reversible solid oxide cells (r-SOCs) enable both power generation and steam electrolysis, and have attracted attention as a solid state electrochemical energy device for a decarbonized society (1). R-SOCs have the advantage of high efficiency due to high temperature operation, but there exist various technical issues remained in materials selection, start-up and shutdown, and long-term durability. Therefore, reducing operating temperature is desirable for practical applications (2,3). Electrode-supported cells, in which the electrode acts as a structural support, enable lower temperature operation by reducing the thickness of the electrolyte, which has certain electrical resistivity. Here in this study, the current-voltage characteristics and reversible cycle durability under r-SOC operating conditions are evaluated using fuel-electrode-supported cells, with the aim of developing r-SOCs capable of highly efficient fuel cell power generation and steam electrolysis. Experimental For the experiments, fuel-electrode-supported cells were fabricated using fuel electrode-supported half-cells (Japan Fine Ceramics, Japan), schematically shown in Fig. 1. The half-cell consists of scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ: 10 mol%Sc2O3-1mol%CeO2-89 mol%ZrO2) or yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ: 8 mol%Y2O3-92 mol%ZrO2) electrolyte and a Ni-cermet fuel electrode, such as Ni-ScSZ or Ni-YSZ. (La0.6Sr0.4)(Co0.2Fe0.8)O3 (LSCF) was applied for the air electrode, and Gd0.1Ce0.9O2 (GDC) was inserted between the electrolyte and the air electrode to suppress interdiffusion and chemical reactions. Four types of cells were used with different combinations of the electrolyte component (YSZ or ScSZ) in the electrolyte layer or the supporting fuel electrode.In electrochemical tests, 50%-humidified hydrogen (100 ml min-1) was supplied to the fuel electrode, and air (150 ml min-1) was supplied to the air electrode. R-SOC initial performance tests were conducted using an electrochemical analyzer (1255B, Solartron). Cell voltage and impedance were measured at 700-800°C at current densities ranging from -0.5 A cm-2 to +0.5 A cm-2. Positive current density means the value in SOFC mode, while negative current density means the value in SOEC mode. In r-SOC 1,000 cycle durability tests, cycles of switching between SOFC and SOEC operation were repeated 1,000 times by varying current density. The range of current density in the cycle tests was between -0.2 A cm-2 and +0.2 A cm-2. The cell impedance was measured before the cycling test and every 100 cycles. After each test, the cells were analyzed by using a focused-ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) to observe and evaluate the electrode microstructure. Results and discussion Figure 2 (a) shows the r-SOC initial performance of each fuel-electrode-supported cell. The cell with the Ni-YSZ fuel electrode and the YSZ electrolyte showed better current voltage characteristics than other cells. Figure 2 (b) shows the r-SOC 1000-cycle durability of the cell with the Ni-YSZ fuel electrode and the YSZ electrolyte. The results showed a decrease in power generation and electrolysis performance with increasing the number of cycles in both SOFC and SOEC modes. Possible degradation mechanisms will be discussed. Preparation of yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte via atmospheric plasma spraying for metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells

Plasma spraying under low chamber pressure has been proven to be capable of preparing dense MS-SOFC electrolytes, but it is costly and inefficient. In this study, atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) as a low-cost and high efficiency alternative was attempted to prepare yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte. Different spraying distances were adopted to investigate the effects of in-flight particle states on the coating microstructure and properties. The results show that due to the YSZ particle temperature increasing with spraying distance, the YSZ splats have more internal microcracks and more regular morphologies. At the spraying distance of 80 mm, the high particle velocity and plasma heating effect combine to create a dense YSZ coating with a porosity of 3.56 %. Additionally, the nanohardness and elastic modulus of this coating reaches 15.6 ± 0.8 GPa and 209.6 ± 4.5 GPa, respectively. The MS-SOFC with the dense YSZ electrolyte, achieve a maximum power density of 902 mW⋅cm-2 and ohmic resistance of 0.10 Ω⋅cm2 at 900 °C. This work demonstrates the feasibility of APS in the efficient preparation of MS-SOFCs electrolytes through optimized particle deposition.

Microstructural Evolution and Gas-Tight Properties of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia/Crofer 22H Stainless Steel Brazed Joints with the Ag-Ge-Si Filler for Use in Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells

In this paper, a novel 95Ag-2.5Ge-2.5Si (in wt %) filler is utilized for brazing yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes and commercial Crofer 22H interconnects for solid-oxide fuel cells’ (SOFCs) sealing application. Before brazing, surface metallization is applied on YSZ and Crofer 22H substrates to improve the wetting performance of the filler on YSZ and Crofer 22H substrates. The brazing procedure is performed at 900 °C for 10 min under a high vacuum (~10−6 torr) to prepare sandwiched YSZ/Crofer 22H brazed coupons. The metallization mentioned above can achieve reactive wetting toward YSZ ceramics. A Si/Ti-rich oxide layer and an Fe-Cr-Si alloying phase are formed at the brazed joints’ YSZ/filler and filler/Crofer 22H interfaces. After exposure to air at 750 °C for 100 h, Cu and Si contents suffer from oxidation and form CuO and SiO2, respectively, in the brazed zone and the YSZ/filler interface of the joints. The Fe-Cr-Si alloying phase at the filler/Crofer 22H interface is preserved without apparent oxidation. The pressure-drop test results show that the brazed joints’ gas tightness does not deteriorate significantly after thermal aging, which is attributed to the good interfacial integrity of thermal-aged joints.
