A scoping review of youth and young adults' roles in natural disaster mitigation and response: considerations for youth wellbeing during a global ecological crisis.

Youth and young adults, ages 15-29, have been identified as assets in mitigation and management for natural disasters around the world. This study reviews the literature on disaster mitigation, response, and recovery following natural disasters with a focus on the engagement of youth and young adults. The Arksey and O'Malley (2005) scoping review model was used to broadly summarize existing literature. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted using several databases. Keywords and index terms were searched using four concepts: (a) age (e.g., youth, young adult), (b) participation type (e.g., engagement, participation), (c) natural disaster type (e.g., hurricane, tsunami), and (d) disaster response type (e.g., planning, mitigation). The search yielded 214 articles published between 1990 and 2021. Of these articles, 19 met inclusion criteria. Identified literature focused on youth and young adults' mitigation and recovery efforts responding to natural disasters in several different countries. Themes of young people's participation or youth-led efforts focused on community mobilization and resilience (n = 5), youth empowerment and policy advocacy (n = 2), communication technology (n = 2), education-community partnerships (n = 9), and postdisaster rescue efforts (n = 1). With a changing climate and increased weather-related natural disasters, as well as in the context of a global health pandemic, community-based groups would benefit from learning from international efforts to engage young people in disaster mitigation and recovery efforts especially as it relates to promoting mental health and well-being.

An increasing number of young people have lost their interests in browsing news and sharing their opinions on traditional news outlets, because they are stereotyped in most mainstream media organizations which also treat youth’s comments as without any authoritative. To correct the mainstream media's misrepresentation and ignorance of young people, some online media platforms have devoted to develop youth journalism and encourage their digital engagement. In this report, the author choose Hack by Triple J and Junkee, the representative youth media in Australia, as two cases to analyze the reasons why they are more popular among Aussie youth than conventional media outlets and how they Reinvigorate young people's political participation.

Beyond the familiar challenges for children and young people’s participation rights: the potential of activism

ABSTRACT Over the last 30 years, remarkable efforts have been made to understand and support children and young people's participation rights outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Despite these efforts, challenges remain consistently the same, such as tokenism, lack of sustainability, and accountability. This article reviews the progress and challenges for children and young people's participation. It then considers the potential of activism as a relatively novel concept for the children's rights field. Drawing on activism literature more generally, and considering examples of child activism, the article explores the potential of identity politics and social movements to challenge adult power, growing on-line activism and tensions between best interests, protection and participation. The article concludes that activism recognises children as political actors and problem solvers. The article develops the idea of an ‘ecology of participation', which values respectful intergenerational relationships that develop ‘critical social capital' for child activism and multiple participation forms - ranging from the more conventional, to protest, to transformation. This more extended conceptualisation of children and young people’s participation builds on all the participation rights within the UNCRC, recognising them as minimum standards rather than final destinations, to create more expansive understandings and practices.

Taking emotions seriously: Fun and pride in participatory research

The article focuses on emotions in participatory research with children and young people. We approach emotions as a generative site for exposing assumptions about participation, as well as participation rights more widely. Our reflections emerged out of revisiting two participatory research projects involving young people (aged 14 to 25) and identifying the significant, but under-articulated importance of emotions in this work. Research is often planned and described in emotionally ‘neutral’ terms, although participatory research necessarily relies on building relationships and engaging emotionally in a research process with others. In our own projects we retrospectively identify and trace the circulation of two salient emotions of fun and pride. We identified fun as an explicit emotion often invoked in the research process, but often under-theorised, and treated almost instrumentally, as something necessary to make the research process flow. The project with young queer women drew our attention to questions of pride, and the role of pride as a transformative emotion which draws our attention to what matters in young people's lives, particularly when it is not anticipated. We argue for the analytical value of emotions, not only as a key component of participatory research design, but also as a site for analysis and knowledge production, if we are to explore seriously research that is intended to respect and support children and young people's participation rights.

Effects of Young People's Participation in Start-up Education on Entrepreneurship : Verification of Intermediate Effects of Self-efficacy Components

청년을 대상으로 한 창업 교육이 기업가정신과 자기효능감의 구성 요소에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 창업 교육이 자기효능감에 구체적으로 어떤 영향을 주는지, 자기효능감의 구성 요소가 창업교육과 기업가정신을 각각 어떻게 매개하고 있는지를 연구하였다. 또한 창업 교육을 통해 기업가정신이 만들어지는 경로에서 창업 교육의 유형(정규교과 및 비교과 창업교육프로그램) 및 참여 횟수에 따라 자기효능감의 하위요소와 기업가정신이 유의미하게 증가하는지 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 창업 교육의 참여는 기업가정신, 자신감, 자기조절효능감, 과업도전감에 정(+)의 영향을 주었고 자기조절효능감, 과업도전감은 기업가정신에 정(+)의 영향을 주었다. 자기조절효능감과 과업도전감은 창업 교육 참여 횟수와 기업가정신을 매개한다. 정규교과창업교육과 비교과창업프로그램 횟수의 증가에 따라 기업가정신, 자신감, 자기조절효능감, 과업도전감에 유의미한 변화를 가져왔으며 특히 비교과 창업교육프로그램은 기업가정신에 더욱 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구를 통해 창업 교육의 목적에 맞는 교육과정 설계와 개인의 교육 참여 계획을 통해 창업 교육의 효과성을 높일 수 있을 것이다.

‘Game to play?’: barriers and facilitators to sexuality and gender diverse young people's participation in sport and physical activity

ABSTRACT Sport settings have long been documented as exclusionary environments for sexuality and gender diverse (SAGD) people and a key location of discrimination. Sport is associated with well-being, and increasing physical activity for disadvantaged groups is a key aim for many governments. This study reports on 13 semi-structured interviews with young SAGD people aged 18–24 in Australia that explore their attitudes to and experiences of sport and physical activity. We found that SAGD young people are ‘game to play’: they hold strong desires to participate in sport and physical activity, and articulated how sport could be more inclusive. Using Bourdieu's concept of ‘capital’, we outline how young SAGD people identify sport as a ‘field’ that requires and fosters various types of capital. We explore barriers they identified that prevent the accumulation of physical and social capital associated with sport participation and physical activity, and their insights for how this may be fostered. The ‘field’ of sport presents as an exclusionary environment, which allows for both explicit bullying and more subtle discriminatory practices. Passive assimilation approaches are not enough to provoke substantial change and active intervention is required to decentre the heteronormativity underpinning these spaces, which has implications for policy and practice to advance the inclusion of SAGD young people in sporting environments.

Comparing young people's participation across political organizations from a life course perspective

ABSTRACT This paper draws on a study of the life course of 40 young people (aged 18–35) in Bologna (Italy), who are active in eight different political organizations. It explores whether the political organization, given that the city's political context is the same for all participants, affects the variation of their pathways. It does so by answering the following question: which phases in the lives of young participants are interconnected with the political organizations they are engaged in? To evaluate the impact of the organizational context on young participants, we will take into consideration three dimensions: the degree of bureaucratization, forms of action, and political orientation. Situated at the intersection of youth and social movement studies, this paper aims to advance our understanding of the connections between primary and political socialization processes in shaping young participants’ mobilization and sustained participation within different political organizations. Our empirical findings show that, if the degree of bureaucratization was constantly salient in the two phases, on the other hand political orientation was more salient during participants' mobilization and the forms of action during participants' sustained participation. In the conclusion, the paper critically discusses the empirical findings of our analysis of the respondents’ narratives.

Co‐creating youth justice practice with young people: Tackling power dynamics and enabling transformative action

AbstractThis paper provides an account of an innovative research project that enabled the co‐creation with justice‐involved young people of a transformative framework of practice, termed Participatory Youth Practice (PYP). We present a description of our participatory research processes and reflect on our attempts to rebalance inherent power dynamics when working with marginalised young people. We demonstrate how young people's meaningful participation in research can strengthen their participation in service design and delivery. The embedding of the PYP framework in youth justice practice across a large region in England is a formative step in understanding the importance of young people's participation.

The Political Role of Philippine Children and Young People as Represented in Youth Fiction

Lualhati Bautista's Dekada '70 (1983) is a mainstay of Philippine high school reading. It tells the story of Amanda Bartolome and her five sons during the titular decade as they live under the shadow of Martial Law. And while youth activism is at the core of Dekada's narrative, existing scholarship on the book does not adequately reflect this. This article begins the work of addressing this gap by identifying schemas of Filipino children's and young people's participation in the socio-political sphere through the characters of the Bartolome brothers and reading them through the lens of Diane M. Rodgers's typology of children as social movement participants.

Children and young people's experiences of living with developmental coordination disorder/dyspraxia: study protocol for a qualitative evidence synthesis.

Background Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) face significant challenges to deal with everyday activities due to underlying motor proficiency difficulties. These challenges affect children and young people's participation; that is, involvement in daily life situations. Recent years have seen a growing body of qualitative research examining children's experiences of living with DCD. Meta-ethnographic synthesis offers a rigorous approach to bring together the findings of discrete qualitative studies to be synthesised in order to advance the conceptual understanding of living with DCD, which is not well conceptualised in the literature to date. Conducting a meta-ethnographic synthesis will help to illuminate the meaning of children and young people's experiences of DCD regarding their involvement in everyday activities and situations. Aim This study aims to systematically review and synthesise qualitative literature regarding children and young people's experiences and views of everyday life and living with DCD. Methods The method of qualitative evidence synthesis that will be followed in this review is a meta-ethnography. The eMERGe and PRISMA reporting guidelines will be adhered to. Ten databases will be searched; Academic Search Complete, AMED, CINAHL, ERIC, MEDLINE, PsychArticles, PsychInfo, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. The Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist will be used by two independent reviewers to appraise all included papers. PROSPERO registration number CRD42019129178 Discussion The findings of this meta-ethnography will endeavour to inform future research, policy and practice. In particular, the results will help to inform the design of future complex interventions to meet the needs of children and young people with DCD. Dissemination will involve the publication of the results in a peer-reviewed journal. Increasingly researchers and policymakers are calling for services to be informed by the perspective and voice of children with DCD. Therefore, a policy brief will be published so that the findings are widely available.

"MAY THE SHAME BE WITH YOU. ALWAYS." MITIGATING YOUNG PEOPLE'S INTIMATE EXCHANGES ONLINE

Cultural anxiety about the impact of young people's intimate exchanges online has increased over the past 15 years. Sexual media and 'digital intimacies' are routinely understood to be a source of harm and adverse outcomes. This paper engages with Finland's National Bureau of Investigation's $2 video campaign, the Police of Finland's public announcements on 'teen sexting' between 2017–2019 and young Finns responses to such educational efforts by using data from $2 study that is a part of a more significant research project on intimacy in data-driven culture in Finland. My research interest lies with some of the disconnections between current educational and policy discourses addressing young people's participation in digital cultures, and the lived experiences of young Finns. By asking from a focus-group of young Finns aged 15–19-years-old how they and their peers experience digital intimacy and their perceptions of the benefits, possible risks and harms, mitigations and solutions, I can draw a more ethical yet a complex picture of young people's engagement with digital intimacies. I call for a focus on the political, ethical and material implications of such educational efforts and policy responses that premises on digital abstinence to critically reflect on the question of young people's (sexual) rights in digital environments. The University of Turku ethics board has approved the research design and the uses of all the research datasets.

What Do We Know about Young Volunteers? An Exploratory Study of Participation in Zooniverse.

Citizen Science (CS) is an increasingly popular activity enacted either in the field or online. Volunteers participate in research activities such as data processing and analysis by, for example, identifying plants and animals. In this paper we examine young people’s participation in online CS projects hosted on the Zooniverse platform. This is an exploratory study, the first of its kind that focuses on young people, mainly 16−19 years old. It uses data analytics and visualisation techniques to capture participation in online CS, and in particular to answer the following questions: (a) What does young people’s participation look like in CS projects? (b) What Zooniverse projects do young people choose to participate in? and (3) What Zooniverse projects do young people choose together? Findings revealed five distinct engagement profiles characterising young people’s participation and identified certain projects as been more popular across participants. Implications for the design of online citizen science projects targeting young people are discussed.

Social isolation and connectedness as determinants of well-being: Global evidence mapping focused on LGBTQ youth

ABSTRACTSocial isolation describes a lack of a sense of belonging, the inability to engage and connect with others, and the neglect or deterioration of social relationships. This conceptual review describes how social isolation and connectedness affect the well-being of LGBTQ youth. Most studies focused on the psychosocial experience of social isolation, which led to suicide attempt, self-harm, sexual risk, and substance use. Scholarly work has drawn from a variety of frameworks, ranging from minority stress theory to positive youth development, to devise interventions that target isolation and connectedness in schools, community-based organisations, and in online environments. Finally, we discuss the importance of addressing social, cultural, and structural dimensions of social isolation in order to foster enabling environments that allow LGBTQ youth to thrive. This conceptual review suggests that individual and social transformations are the result of young people's meaningful participation in shaping their environment, which is made possible when their capabilities are fostered through social well-being. Our findings suggest the need for measures of social isolation among youth in databanks produced by global institutions, such as the World Health Organization.

Political socialisation and intergenerational transmission: life stories of young social movement activists in Morocco

ABSTRACT Since the 2011 protests and uprisings, a plethora of studies on young people's political participation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has been published. Remarkably, the concept of political socialization was hardly used in this research. But for MENA area studies, and for the humanities and social sciences in general, it remains a central question how subjects socialized under authoritarian rule develop democratic orientations and critical political subjectivities, how they are suddenly induced to protest, often even risking their lives. Against this backdrop, the article makes the case for a biographical and generational approach to research the political socialisation of young people in the MENA region. Based on life stories with social movement activists in Morocco, the article looks into processes of intergenerational transmission and intragenerational communication that are relevant for the emergence of political orientations and for the process of becoming an activist. An in-depth analytical contrast of three biographies along the lines of collective memory, gender, formal education, and symbolisation illustrates different dynamics of intergenerational transmission in political socialisation, namely continuity, negotiation, and disparity.

Agriculture Liberalization and Marginalized Young Local People: Evidence from a Food Plantation in Lampung

Since the 1980s, Indonesia has integrated its economy with global capitalism and has become liberal, particularly in the essential commodities, such as food, forestry, and mining. Moreover, this liberalization has created a diverse workforce and changed food production systems from family farming to corporate farming. Massive corporate farming raises a long debate, not only regarding the exclusion of small farmers but also regarding the changing social formations in the countryside that have led to a farmer regeneration crisis for young local people. Using social reproduction concepts, this study aims to analyze the rural social change including the impact for farmer families and access of local youth on job opportunity amid food corporate regime. The study is conducted in Terusan Nunyai sub-district of Central Lampung, which is identified as a high massive agriculture liberalization area in crops. The qualitative data is gathered from some literature reviews, direct observations, focus group discussion and in-depth interviews with some key informants. The research found that liberalization was followed by the land grabbing, and its food production systems have changed; they were previously based on household and tradition, but they switched into a corporate-based system (food estate). This corporate-based system employs many migrant workers, and after that, it changed the social class in the local community, between classes of employees and the local community classes as well. Limited capital and access of local people to get involved in the liberalization are considered to be the causes of marginalization of local people, including the young people's participation in the new social reproduction in the food regime.

Not all Online Sexual Activities Are the Same.

Young people's use and participation in online sexual activities (OSA) has increased in the past two decades and has changed their behavior in the area of sexuality. The existing literature has some important limitations, concerning the assessment of the construct and its orientation toward problematic use, while ignoring its healthy use or social participation and its relationship with well-being. The main objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between the three types of OSA (compulsive, isolated, and social) proposed by Delmonico and Miller, as well as offline sexual behavior, and psychosexual well-being. It was also necessary to evaluate the factor structure of the Internet Sexual Screening Test (ISST). Participants were 1,147 university students of both sexes, aged between 18 and 26 years, who completed a battery of online questionnaires. The main finding of the study is that, when controlling for other online sexual behavior, different types of OSA evaluated relate differently to offline sexual behavior and to psychosexual well-being, and that most young people made healthy use and participation of OSA. It also presents a new structure of the ISST. The discussion emphasizes the need to recognize the positive consequences of OSA to implement programs for the promotion of sexual health.

Acesso aos serviços de atenção primária à saúde por adolescentes e jovens em um município do Estado da Bahia, Brasil

The study sought to analyze the association between adolescents and young adults' access to primary health care services and Family Health Strategy (FHS) services. It is a cross-sectional study based on a household survey of 812 individuals aged between 15 and 24 years in Camaçari, Bahia State, Brazil, through cluster sampling. Demographic, socioeconomic, health and health service variables were used to describe the population according to primary health care area. The association between primary health care coverage area and access to its services, access barriers and participation in educational activities were estimated through prevalence ratios (PR) using multilevel logistic regression models in the R software. Access to primary health care services was reported by 89.5% of individuals, with no statistically significant differences between this type of access and primary health care coverage area. However, among individuals who reside in areas covered by FHS, there was greater access to harm reduction and health promotion actions (PR = 3.0; 95%CI: 1.68-5.34), but also lower probability of being seen by a health worker on the same day the appointment was scheduled (PR = 0.60; 95%CI: 0.48-0.74) and lower availability of public transportation (RP = 0.59; 95%CI: 0.39-0.90). Study results point to a high prevalence of access to primary health care services among adolescents and young adults. Though we did not observe a difference in access between areas with FHS coverage, young people's greater participation in prevention and health promotion activities reinforces this strategy's importance within Brazilian Unified National Health System (SUS).

Young People as Co‐producers in Policing across England. An Evaluation of the ‘Youth Commission’ on Police and Crime

This paper discusses a recent study on three ‘Youth Commission’ on police and crime projects. Professional viewpoints were interpreted to understand how they valued young people's participation and made sense of their experiences and capabilities. Framed within policing reforms, the ‘Youth Commission’ projects regard young people as co‐producers, who work in partnership with professionals to address police and crime issues. The focus is upon professionals and their relationships with young people for transformative participation and social outcomes. Working in partnerships showed interdependency but identifies further challenges if professionals do not truly value young people's participation.
