Examining the Impact of Young People's Involvement in Cultural Heritage Preservation and Promotion

Culture is vital in preserving history and continuity of traditions, and that is why cultural practices should be protected and supported. It is important to understand young people's participation in these activities first because they are the key to sustaining the efforts in the future. This study examines the impact of young people's involvement in cultural heritage (CH) through four key variables, knowledge (KNW), engagement in activities (EIA), interest in participation (IIP), and impact perception (IP). The data were administered through a structured questionnaire, which was distributed among 300 students from schools and colleges. Several statistical tests were conducted such as reliability tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Chi-Square tests, and descriptive analysis using SPSS version 20. The results of the reliabilities of the scales showed that KNW and IIP are very reliable and EIA and IP are comparatively slightly less reliable. The outcome of the ANOVA revealed differences in the variables with a notable F-value signifying variability in responses. Results of chi-square tests showed that KNW and IIP were significant at p < 0.05 while EIA and IP were not significant. The mean score for all the variables was determined using descriptive statistics, and results showed that IIP had the highest mean score meaning that youths were willing to participate in cultural heritage activities. The study also identifies KNW and IIP as key elements that affect youth engagement in the preservation of cultural heritage. It indicates or rather underlines the possibility of harnessing this, interest to improve further on cultural heritage programs.

Development and validation of a new tool to assess quality of decision-making by older children and parents about research participation

ObjectiveEffective decision-making is crucial for children and young people's trial participation, but specific tools to measure it are lacking. The TRECA (TRials Engagement in Children and Adolescents) Decision-Making Questionnaire (DMQ) was developed to fill this gap and has been evaluated for reliability and validity MethodsWe created the TRECA Decision-Making Questionnaire, based on similar measures for adults, and recruited participants through seven Studies-Within-a-Trial (SWATs). Participants were randomly assigned to receive trial information either as a printed Participant Information Sheet or Multimedia Information, or both, and asked to complete the DMQ. We calculated item completion rates, item-remainder statistics and Cronbach’s Alpha, and conducted factor analysis. Results549 participants (433 parents/guardians, 116 older children) completed a DMQ. It had high completion rates and internal consistency (Alpha = 0.88 for parents/guardians and 0.84 for older children) and moderate to high inter-item correlations. The DMQ had a single factor accounting for 53 % of variance. ConclusionsThe TRECA DMQ is a useful tool for evaluating research participation decisions in older children, as well as parents and guardians. Practice implicationsOur study suggests that the TRECA DMQ can be used to assess the quality of decision-making about trials in parents, guardians and older children.

Is authenticity key? Mobilization by social media influencers versus celebrities and young people's political participation

AbstractPopular personalities like social media influencers (SMIs) and traditional celebrities can not only be used in the context of for‐profit marketing, but also help non‐profit campaigns address young audiences. Across three experiments (NTotal = 1233), we compared the effectiveness of SMIs’ mobilizing appeals in relation to a humanitarian issue to those made by traditional celebrities. Inspired by meaning transfer theory, we expected SMIs and their endorsements to be perceived as particularly authentic, elucidating their possibly unique influence on young people's participation. In Study 1, mobilizing appeals from popular personalities generally increased participation intentions among young people, but SMIs were not more effective in this role than celebrities. Study 2 and Study 3 showed that effects of the two source types are dependent on gender. Controlling for source and endorsement authenticity, we found that SMIs were better at directly mobilizing young women for political participation than celebrities. In contrast, young men were more easily convinced by celebrities to engage in political action, due to higher authenticity attributed to celebrities’ endorsements. While SMIs were not consistently perceived as more authentic than celebrities, the success of popular personalities’ mobilizing appeals can generally be well explained by perceived source authenticity and perceived authenticity of endorsements.

Young people's participation in their own mental health care: Session-by-session feedback in youth mental health services (headspace).

Young people's participation in their own mental healthcare requires ways for them to provide feedback to their clinicians on how they are experiencing their treatment. Key dimensions of session experience are willingness to attend, feeling listened to and understood, working on issues important to them, feeling hopeful for the future and feeling that things are improving in their lives. This study reports on young people's session experiences over time and by key demographics for headspace youth mental health services. The sample comprised 16 484 young people aged 12-25 years who commenced an episode of care at one of the 150 headspace centres between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022 and who had attended at least two services. Data were collected via the routinely collected headspace minimum data set. Overall, young people reported very positive session experiences over all the session dimensions. Few demographic differences were found: session ratings were more positive for young adults (18+ years) compared with adolescents (under 18 years). Scores on all five dimensions improved with more visits, and willingness to attend and working on issues important to the young person were strong predictors of service engagement. Better session experience scores were associated with more positive ratings of quality of life. Young people experience their headspace sessions very positively, and more positive experiences are associated with better service engagement and quality of life. Routinely collecting session feedback gives young people a valuable way to participate in and inform their own care.

The impact of Gen Z's pro-environmental behavior on sustainable development goals through tree planting

This interdisciplinary study addresses a critical gap in environmental behavior research by focusing on Gen Z's engagement with tree planting, a key yet underexplored activity in the context of achieving sustainable development goals. Motivated by the need to understand how cultural practices and environmental policies influence young people's participation in sustainability efforts, this research examines how integrating psychological theories with sociocultural dynamics can enhance our understanding of proactive environmental engagement. Leveraging frameworks from psychology, sociology, environmental science, and cultural studies, this research integrates the Value-Belief-Norm theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior to analyze how Gen Z's values, environmental beliefs, and perceived behavioral control influence their intentions and actions toward tree planting. The methodology involves a two-phase empirical investigation: initially developing and validating measurement items with 141 Gen Z participants, followed by a second phase with 203 participants to validate the proposed model using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings highlight that the environmental value of Gen Z significantly shapes its attitudes and behavioral intentions toward tree planting. Additionally, this study reveals the crucial role of personal norms and perceived behavioral control in steering individuals’ pro-environmental behaviors. The Vishu Thaineetham initiative, which has a global footprint and has transformed a cultural tradition into a sustainable tree-planting movement, is a case study for innovative ecological preservation. This initiative demonstrates the potential of culturally adapted practices to foster collective environmental engagement and promote cleaner production strategies. The implications for theory and practice, emphasizing insights into environmental behavior models, are also provided.

The impact of digital finance on young People's health insurance participation decisions in China.

The digital finance era has reshaped young people's lifestyles, risk perceptions and insurance participation decisions. Modern youth have to constantly seek for rational social security support and construct individual protection barriers to adapt to new lifestyles and social structures. China's multi-tiered, universal health insurance system is urgently needed to satisfy young people's flexible needs and rational decision-making. Based on the micro data from 2011 ~ 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this paper uses macro data from Digital Inclusive Finance Index (DIFI) matching to construct probit and m-logit model to assess the impact of the development of digital finance on Chinese youth whether or not to participate in health insurance, and how they choose the concrete type of health insurance. (1) Baseline regression results shows that digital finance has a significant positive effect on Chinese youth's health insurance participation decisions, and has different effects on choices within health insurance types. Strong support for the conclusions is provided by endogeneity and robustness tests. (2) The results of the heterogeneity analysis reveal that the marginal effect of digital finance on young people's health insurance decisions shows urban-rural differences, divergence in levels of self-rated health. (3) The mechanism analysis results suggest that there are two mechanism paths of digital finance on youth health insurance decisions: the household income effect and the subjective well-being effect, and two moderating effects: employment type and family structure. Highlighting the positive value that digital finance brings to the perception of youth insurance participation and the construction of social security systems, it needs to pay close attention to the dynamic changes in employment security and family structure through data, and explore the socio-psychological fluctuation and demand for social security among modern youth. To provide a way forward to achieve the integration of the health insurance system in China and solve the current problem of health insurance equity.

Água negra (black water) and overwhelming details: For more-than-nexus approaches to global water–energy–food challenges

This paper advances multidisciplinary research, policy, education and activisms which cohere around the concept of the ‘water–energy–food (W–E–F) nexus’ via an evidence-led critique of normative forms of nexus-thinking which draws upon research with 3705 diverse young people's (aged 10–24 years) W–E–F experiences in SE Brazil. We consider how the neat, cool, ostensibly authoritative buzzword style of W–E–F nexus-thinking is radically unsettled – and sometimes conceptually-critically overwhelmed – via encounters with social scientific data in practice. In particular, the paper presents two interlinked analyses of data relating to young people's everyday engagements with water resources. First, we present a quantitative analysis of young people's everyday participation with/in water resources, highlighting diversities and inequities in relation to age, gender, ethnicity and social class, among other modes of social–cultural heterogeneity and intersectionality. Second, we present a qualitative narration of young people's water-related anxieties, evidencing their intimate everyday interrelations with watery materialities and insecurities – ‘black water’, ‘muddy water’, ‘shit water’ and all. In so doing, we advance an argument for what we term more-than-nexus-thinking: i.e., forms of research, theory and practice which value the apparent conceptual-ethical clarity and interoperability of nexus-thinking, whilst actively thinking-with complexities and deeply-affecting lived experiences of W–E–F in everyday spaces.

Enhancing youth Voices: Exploring community participation through youth workers

The European Union and Council of Europe (hereafter referred to as the EU and CE) encourage member states to promote and stimulate the active participation of young people through the role of youth workers. However, it is worth noting that the personal perceptions of youth workers may influence the actions they take to achieve this goal. This article aims to investigate the perceptions of youth workers and the characteristics and conditions of their interventions in promoting young people's participation in the community. To this end, six discussion groups were formed, consisting of 51 professionals working in this field in Catalonia, Spain. The findings suggest that youth workers associate the notion of participation with how young people dialogue with the public institutions. Although youth workers have observed self-managed forms of participation among young people, their aim is to improve the relationship between young people and institutions. They also acknowledge that young people are often on the margins of the local political context. Rather than being viewed as active citizens and central figures, young people are frequently seen as being in a learning and development phase towards adulthood. At the methodological level, youth workers use strategies based on socio-educational relationships and identify conditioning factors that limit the development of transformative policies for civic participation in their workplaces. It is recommended that the model for local youth policies be transformed into a more collaborative approach. This would involve collaboration between youth workers, young people and adults to foster innovative public participation policies that help promote the potential of municipalities for change.

Adventist Young People's Perceptions of Missionaries in The Adventist Church Environment Seventh Day Based on Mark 10:29-30

This study explores the perceptions of young people in the Seventh-day Adventist Church regarding the missionary task and contribution. The main focus of this research is the Adventist young people's views on mission endeavors in relation to the teachings from Mark 10:29-30. To conduct this research, the methods used include qualitative methods, and analysis of scriptural texts. The results of this study show the different ways Adventist young people see the importance of missions, the difficulties missionaries face, and how the teachings from Mark 10:29-30 influence their perception of sacrifice and reward in the context of ecclesiastical missions. The findings may help to increase young people's understanding and participation in ecclesial mission activities.

A gender‐based violence prevention programme—Young people's participation and activism in Scotland

AbstractThis article presents a critical reflection from young people and youth workers on their participation in a gender‐based violence prevention programme implemented in Scotland. Authors have focussed their lens on the role of young people's peer education and activism, including using arts‐based methods to reflect on their work. The programme aimed to address the pervasive issue of gender‐based violence and empower young individuals to become agents of change within their communities. The implications of this study contribute to the broader discourse on gender‐based violence prevention and the role of young people in effecting social change.

Financial Incentives for Physical Activity and Sports Participation in Young People.

Physical inactivity is a global health problem. Childhood is an opportune time to establish healthy physical activity behaviors, including the participation in organized physical activity, such as sports. We hypothesize that financial incentives can improve young people's participation in physical activity and sports. Children and young people's participation, as stipulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, applies to both matters that directly and indirectly affect children. Participation is in some countries recognized as a fundamental right and children's engagement seen as a valuable resource. Assisted by conceptual understanding of co-creation, children may be enabled to engage and participate in a variety of contexts. Knowledge about research on, and facilitation of, co-creation involving children is the theme of the scoping review presented by this protocol. The protocol outlines a scoping review which is to use a systematic approach to synthesize knowledge of research about co-creation with children. By systematically scoping the existing research about co-creation with children, the review will survey the available literature (evidence), identify key concepts, and uncover gaps in knowledge. The overall objective of this scoping review is to gain knowledge of research conducted about all types of co-creation with children, and to identify the gaps that future research should address. This scoping review acknowledges the existence of multiple definitions of co-creation, which vary depending on different contexts. The review will also recognize several other associated concepts, such as co-production, co-design, co-research, and co- innovation, since they are used interchangeably with or align with the understanding of co-creation being reviewed. The methodological framework outlined by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for scoping review will be used as a guide for this review. The PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR): Checklist and Explanation will be used during the process. The databases, ERIC (Education Resources Information Centre), Teacher Reference Center, Idunn, Oria, Libris, Kungliga biblioteket, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Scopus, Academic search elite, Web of Science, Google scholar, will be searched for information on academic books and articles, in May 2024. Also grey literature will be searched for relevant academic references. There are no limitations in date of publication. Language will be limited to English, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish. Following the selection of studies, data will be extracted and analysed. Ethical approval is not required, because only secondary data is collected. Dissemination will include peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences regarding public innovation, education, and children`s participations contexts.

Differences in participation between young adults with cerebral palsy and their peers: A cross-sectional multicentre European study

BackgroundChildren and adolescents with disabilities are known to participate less in most areas of life than their non-disabled peers. Objectives(1) To estimate differences in participation between young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) and their non-disabled peers; (2) to test the mediating role of financial difficulties and student status; (3) to test the moderating role of personal factors on participation difference; and (4) to test the moderating role of impairment. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in young adults [19–28 years] with CP (n = 228) and non-disabled peers (n = 2861) in France, Germany and Sweden. Participation was assessed using the Questionnaire of Young People's Participation adapted for young adults (QYPP-YA). Differences in five domains of participation were estimated using structural equation modeling with WLSMV method and bias-corrected bootstrap confidence intervals. ResultsYoung adults with CP showed lower participation than others in all domains, with the largest difference in the "intimate relationships" domain (β = 1.71 bcCI95[1.46; 1.95]). Student status mediated the difference in "intimate relationships", "interpersonal relationships" and "independence". Women showed greater differences than men on "independence". Impairments moderated difference in participation. The less severely impaired young adults showed no difference with their non-CP peers in "interpersonal relationships", "social life" and "independence", but made autonomous everyday decisions more often than their peers. ConclusionsYoung adults with CP do not have the same opportunities to attain the participation level of non-CP people of the same age. Continuance of education could help to reduce participation difference in "interpersonal relationships” and "independence”.

The Role of Young People's Political Participation in Building a Strong Democracy: Case Study in Indonesia

This research discusses political participation among young people as the key to building and improving the political system in Indonesia. Young people play an important role as the future generation of voters who have great potential in determining political direction and policies. In this context, political awareness and political education are key factors in forming a young generation who are active and responsible in the political process. This research also discusses challenges such as apathy towards politics and efforts that can be made to overcome this problem. Through active participation, comprehensive political education, and involvement in political dialogue, the younger generation has great potential to become agents of positive change in building a strong and clean democracy in Indonesia.

Factors on political involvement among university student in Malaysia

For a country to remain stable, young people's participation in politics is crucial. Today's youth, even university students who ought to be at the forefront of this crucial issue, are becoming less and less interested in participating in politics. The purpose of this study was to determine the elements that influence university students' political participation. A cross-sectional survey of 417 university students from Peninsular Malaysia's East Coast was done. The AMOS programme was used to analyze the data obtained through the questionnaire using the Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results demonstrate that factors such as attitude, family, media, and socializing have a favorable impact on university students' political involvement. This conclusion is supposed to serve as a foundation for different stakeholders to take all required steps to boost the involvement of university students in politics.

Maternal depressive symptoms and young people's higher education participation and choice of university: Evidence from a longitudinal cohort study

BackgroundParticipation in higher education has significant and long-lasting consequences for people's socioeconomic trajectories. Maternal depression is linked to poorer educational achievement for children in school, but its impact on university attendance is unclear. MethodsIn an English longitudinal cohort study (N = 8952), we explore whether young people whose mothers experienced elevated depressive symptoms are less likely to attend university, and the role of potential mediators in the young person: educational achievement in school, depressive symptoms, and locus of control. We also examine whether maternal depressive symptoms influence young people's choice of university, and non-attendees' reasons for not participating in higher education. ResultsYoung people whose mothers experienced more recurrent depressive symptoms were less likely to attend university (OR = 0.88, CI = 0.82,0.94, p < 0.001) per occasion of elevated maternal depressive symptoms) after adjusting for confounders. Mediation analysis indicated this was largely explained by educational achievement in school (e.g., 82.7 % mediated by age 16 achievement) and locus of control at 16. There was mixed evidence for an impact on choice of university. For participants who did not study at university, maternal depressive symptoms were linked to stating as a reason having had other priorities to do with family or children (OR: 1.17, CI = 1.02,1.35). LimitationsLack of data on the other parent's depression, loss to follow-up, possibly selective non-response. ConclusionsYoung people whose mothers experience elevated depressive symptoms on multiple occasions are less likely to participate in higher education; educational achievement in secondary school, but not the young people's own depressive symptoms, substantially mediated the effect.

The Role of Society as a Socialization Agent in Influencing Youth Engagement in the Electoral Process in Malaysia

Society is one of the socialization agents capable of shaping individual behaviour. In the context of elections, voting is one of the processes of involvement in elections. There are three (3) main aspects of indirect involvement, namely registering as a voter, checking voter registration, and voting in elections. All these aspects have driving factors in ensuring individual awareness of election-related matters. This article explains the role of society in the involvement of young people in the electoral process through 12 statements presented. A total of 1500 respondents across Malaysia aged 21 to 40 were identified in this study. Quantitative methods were used to analyse the demographic characteristics of respondents and the study's findings related to statements about the role of society that can influence youth involvement in the electoral process. Overall, the study's findings indicate that societal factors are at a low level, with only one (1) statement out of 12 presented exceeding 50 percent agreement, namely the statement related to respondents' residence being active in political activities with 799 out of 1500 respondents (53.2%) agreeing. From these findings, society has a role in attracting the interest of young people to participate in the electoral process. However, the method of organizing programs by society is seen as less attractive to young people's participation. Therefore, this article will discuss statements related to the role of society and suggestions to increase youth involvement in the electoral process.

Graduate students' perspectives on their acquired skills following the Erasmus+ Programme

Graduate skills are a key factor in their selection in a company. This research focuses on the extent to which the Erasmus+ mobility programme contributes to the development of skills required for a modern work environment. Thus, the paper examines whether the skills developed through an Erasmus+ programme are recognised as important by European employers. The results of the primary quantitative online survey showed that graduates developed adaptability, flexibility, enthusiasm, dynamism, professionalism, responsibility, commitment, and creative problem-solving skills through their participation in the Erasmus+ programme. Even if the Erasmus+ programme appears to enhance a variety of talents, there are some others, such the improvement of interpersonal skills, which are less well-developed. An important conclusion of this study is that young people's participation in the Erasmus+ programme, in terms of study or internship, contributes to their desire to work in an international context, while a prolonged participation in the programme is positively correlated with the development of communication skills.

The importance of family support to engage and retain girls in male dominated action sports. A qualitative study of young people's perspectives.

Social support is positively correlated with physical activity (PA), especially amongst girls, but is underexplored in male-dominated action sports (e.g., mountain biking, skateboarding and surfing). This study explored family level social support needs and experiences of girls and boys in three action sports. Aspiring, current or former Australian adolescent (12-18 years; girls n = 25; boys n = 17) mountain bikers, skateboarders and/or surfers were individually interviewed (telephone/Skype) in 2018/2020. A socio-ecological framework guided the semi-structured interview schedule. Audio-recordings were transcribed verbatim and data analysed thematically using a constant comparative approach. Family level social support was highly influential in young people's participation in action sports, with its absence a common reason for no or discontinued engagement amongst girls. Parents and siblings were the main social support providers with extended family (e.g., grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins) also notable. Participation (current/past/co-) was the main social support type followed by emotional (e.g., encouragement), instrumental (e.g., transport, equipment/funding) and informational (e.g., coaching) support. Girls were inspired/encouraged by brothers but boys were not inspired/encouraged by sisters; boys and girls co-participated with both parents but co-participating and being inspired by fathers was most common, especially amongst girls; fathers were more commonly the main transport provider if they co-participated with their child; fathers mostly provided initial coaching; only boys were taught equipment maintenance by parents. Sport-related organisations/groups have numerous opportunities to improve girls' representation in action sports by fostering family level social support through various means. Intervention strategies should be tailored to account for gendered participation differences.

How Do the Young People Picture Out Their Use, Activeness, and Connectivity on Social Media? A Discourse Analysis Approach

In the past few years, young people have been using social media platforms to inform, share, and deliver their feelings. However, social media platforms like Facebook lost popularity among the young generations. Now, they prefer to interact via social media sites, such as Instagram, as narrative-based features. This study explores how young people use social media to their daily concerns. This article employs an anthropological methodology and discourse analysis to investigate the social media discourses among Padang's young people. As the capital of West Sumatra, Indonesia, Padang city provides a warm and welcoming environment for the young generation, making it an ideal place to grow spiritually and socially. Therefore, these young people's participation in the platforms are influenced by the issues reflecting their daily life. Nevertheless, it is considered that some of their behaviors can be explained by the trend of increased social media usage among their citizens.
