Demidov Yaroslavl State University, Russia Known, that some teleostei can perceive the geomagnetic field (GMF). However, the information about magnetosensitivity in Cyprinidae fish from artificial and natural habitats is obscure. We have registered preferred directions in Danio rerio (Hamilton) from aquaria-cultivated line exposed to the natural GMF, 180 degrees reversal of horizontal GMF component, 180 degrees reversal of vertical GMF component, 180 degrees reversal of both vertical and horizontal GMF components and 90 degrees clockwise turn of horizontal GMF component. We also registered the preferred directions in Rutilus rutilus (L.) from Rybinsk reservoir exposed to the natural GMF and 90 degrees clockwise turn of horizontal GMF component. It was found that zebrafish prefer two opposite directions towards east and west in the natural GMF. When the horizontal component of GMF was turned 90 degrees clockwise D. rerio prefer two opposite directions towards north and south. The possible reason of bimodality in zebrafish’s preferred directions distributions is discussed. The only direction towards east-north-east observed in roach under the natural GMF. This direction coincided with the way from the place of capture to the streamflow part of Rybinsk reservoir. And it was changed by south-south-east direction when turned the horizontal component of GMF 90 degrees clockwise. The possible reason of the choosing directions by fish with GMF is discussed. The article focuses on the financial aspect of regional tourism development, with Yaroslavl oblast selected as a case study. In the article, the author proposes a practical approach to the identification of the financial flow influenced and generated by regional tourism development. The author states that the financial flow consists of two components: financial provision/assurance (the funds required for policy measures implementation) and tourist turnover (tourism-generated income, which is tourism contribution to the gross regional product). Financial provision/assurance is regarded as part of the resources provision intended for policy measures, the author demonstrates the possible approaches to its specification and dwells on the approach taken to develop the target project “Tourism development strategies for Yaroslavl oblast: period of implementation – up to 2025”. The author also provides an evaluation of tourist turnover as predicted for Yaroslavl oblast, with due consideration given to the tourism development policy measures implementation in the framework of scenarios proposed. In particular, the author describes different approaches to predicted tourist-arrival volume evaluation, demonstrates calculations of future tourist expenses, and provides a description of two alternatives for tourist turnover calculation. Moreover, the author puts forth a methodology of tourist turnover prediction based on practical calculations and regarded from a strategic perspective. Thus, the author attempts to specify the calculation procedure, which is prerequisite for effective policy decision-making and regional tourism development strategy formulation. The author insists on the urgent nature of the issues raised in the article, especially in the light of the current trends in global tourism development.

Comparative characteristics of leucocytes compositions in the crucian carp Carassius carassius (Cyprinidae) from the waterbodies of the Chernobyl exclusion zone and from the Rybinsk reservoir

The comparative characteristics of leucocytes of the crucian carp Carassius carassius inhabiting the waterbodies of the Chernobyl exclusion zone (Kyiv oblast, Ukraine) and outside the zone in the upper nonpolluted areas of the Kyiv (Kyiv and Chernigov oblasts, Ukraine) and the Rybinsk reservoirs (Yaroslavl oblast, Russian Federation) is given. The composition and quantitative parameters of certain types of leucocytes are presented. It is shown that the crucian carp from the Chernobyl exclusion zone differs from that inhabiting the noncontaminated waterbodies by the level of lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils, and blast cells. It is suggested that the radioactive contamination affects the processes of differentiation of stem hematopoietic cells in fish.

Radiolarians from Upper Jurassic (Middle Oxfordian and Upper Kimmeridgian) deposits of Yaroslavl oblast

The middle Oxfordian and late Kimmeridgian radiolarian assemblages from Upper Jurassic deposits of Yaroslavl oblast are studied for the first time. The middle Oxfordian assemblage is dominated by stauraxonic morphotypes of genera Paronaella and Pseudocrucella occurring in association with discoid forms. Nassellarian radiolarians are very rare in this assemblage of extremely low taxonomic diversity, which is lacking spheroidal morphotypes. The late Kimmeridgian assemblage is more diverse in morphological and taxonomic aspects. It includes spheroidal forms, those of the family Pantanelliidae Pessagno inclusive, and more frequent nassellarian species, but stauraxonic radiolarians are less abundant in its composition. This assemblage is comparable to a considerable extent with the Kimmeridgian radiolarians from Moscow oblast, being of the South Boreal type according to its composition.

Chronicles of the annual 2012 all-Russia seminar on experimental mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry

The annual 2012 AllRussia Seminar on Experi� mental Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry was organized by the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry (GEOKhI), Russian Acad� emy of Sciences, and the Institute of Experimental Mineralogy (IEM), Russian Academy of Sciences, under the financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project no. 12�05�0601g, and the Earth Science Division of the Academy of Sciences. The Seminar was held in Moscow on April 17 and 18, 2012, and was attended by researchers from more than thirty national research and educational institutions in Moscow, Chernogolovka, Novosibirsk, Miass, Dubna, Kazan, Irkutsk, Omsk, Vladivostok, Makhachkala, and Borok in Yaroslavl oblast. The Seminar was also partic� ipated by foreign scientists from Armenia, Great Brit� ain, Germany, France, and the Czech Republic. The participants presented there more than 146 papers, including 58 at plenary sessions and 100 at poster ones. The Seminar was opened by its Chairman Prof. A.A. Kadik, who outlines the scope of the Seminar. The CoChairman Prof. Yu.A. Litvin greeted and welcomed the participants and expressed regret that the Russian Foundation for Basic Research suspended its financial support for the acquisition and maintenance of research equipment, which shall affect, first of all, equipment for experimental studies.

Structure of hydrophilic vegetation of a small river in an urban environment

The hydrophilic vegetation of the small Korovka River has been characterized in the urban and suburban zones of the city of Rybinsk (Yaroslavl oblast). The structure and state of the vegetation within the urban territory depends mainly on the anthropogenic load and hydrological factors. The main phytocoenoses of urban and suburban zones are hydrophilic and helophilic complexes, respectively. The level of overgrowth of these zones varies within the range of 30–70% and 5–20%, respectively. The following overgrowth patterns dominate in the urban zone: mosaic thicket, border, and underwater meadow. In the case of the suburban zone, the border and thicket patterns dominate.

The biological and biochemical characteristics of ten foreign-bred garden strawberry varieties have been studied under outdoor conditions in the northwestern region of the Russian Federation. Varieties with a set of valuable traits for commercial cultivation and home gardening have been revealed.

The Downsizing of Russian Agriculture1

The hand of Adam Smith, which has already clutched the Russian peasant by his throat, will soon squeeze the life out of him (unnamed member of Russia’s Council of the Federation). 2 THIS ARTICLE ARGUES THAT the change Russian agriculture has experienced since 1991 is closer to Sturm und Drang wild market enforcement or suspension of rules than to reform. The Russian state shed its former regulative and supportive role at a time when its financial resources dried up, and it did so abruptly. Some law-making activities were initiated but they made little difference. Since 1999 the Russian state’s fiscal condition has been improving, so the state is staging a comeback to the agrarian scene. But its interventions, though justifiable and similar to other national governments’ impact on agriculture, are essentially anti-market. In the meantime, Russian commercial agriculture has been downscaled in terms of inputs and output alike. Livestock numbers and farmland have been particularly hard hit, and the ongoing agricultural recovery is more structurally and spatially selective than ever before. In the Non-Chernozem Zone of European Russia, for example, a spatially contiguous belt of agricultural colonisation has given way to an archipelago-like pattern. This article examines some acquired (socio-demographic) and inborn (environmental) constraints Russian farming faces and questions whether retaining of large swaths of farmland in Russia is compatible with a liberal economic order. The article begins with an examination of trends in three modes of farming operations. I then turn to the Russian state’s re-entering the agrarian scene — after being conspicuously absent for almost a decade — in an effort to rein in the improprieties of the wild market. Vertical integration of farms and food processors is examined, as it has spawned most if not all agricultural success stories since 1999. Human capital in rural Russia is then interpreted as a limiting factor of agricultural modernisation. Aside from the publications of students of Russian agriculture, three other sources routinely inform the author about its current condition: Russian government statistics, Russian media reports and field trips. All three sources have become more limited and fragmented, and arguably less accurate, than before 1992. After the demise of central planning regions have taken diverging tacks, and so whatever has been observed by this author and his collaborators in selected regions such as Moscow, Novgorod, the Chuvash Republic, Ryazan’ and Stavropol does not equate to a coherent picture of

Anthropogenic and Natural Components of Hydrocarbons in the Water of Lake Nero in Yaroslavl Oblast

The results of studies of spatial and seasonal variations in hydrocarbon concentrations in hypertrophic Lake Nero are used to discuss the problem of division of hydrocarbons into anthropogenic and natural components. It is shown that the use of bitumoids as a component of oil pollution instead of total organic matter can introduce errors in the results. Seasonal variations in the activity of hydrobionts in an undisturbed area are shown to have a notable effect on the assessment of the proportion of anthropogenic hydrocarbons in their total concentration, that is, on the assessment of the extent of pollution of water bodies. The natural component is found to dominate over the anthropogenic component only in the periods of algae blooming. In spring and autumn, the total concentration of hydrocarbons was found to exceed the MAC and to be due mostly to natural hydrobiological factors.
