An overview of XML warehouse design approaches and techniques

XML – the Extensible Markup Language has recently emerged as a standard for information representation and exchange on the internet, because of its portability, versatility and extensibility. As the large increase in the availability of such data, there is a need of an appropriate storage and an integration solution for future analysis and decision-making. Data warehouses systems provide a suitable means to organise and manage XML data for decision-making. However, XML data warehouse has some special requirements such as mixed content and irregular structure of XML data sources, which make existing traditional data warehouse approaches and techniques unsuitable. In this paper, we give an overview of current state of the art concerning how XML technologies can be combined with data warehousing systems, by the presentation of the most relevant XML warehousing approaches proposed in the literature.

The Quality of the XML Web

We collect evidence to answer the following question: Is the quality of the XML documents found on the Web sufficient to apply XML technology like XQuery, XPath and XSLT? XML collections from the Web have been previously studied statistically, but no detailed information about the quality of the XML documents on the Web is available to date. We address this shortcoming in this study. We gathered 180K XML documents from the Web. Their quality is surprisingly good; 85.4% is wellformed and 99.5% of all specified encodings is correct. Validity needs serious attention. Only 25% of all files contain a reference to a DTD or XSD, of which just one third is actually valid. Wellformedness errors and validity errors are studied in detail. Our study is well documented, easily repeatable and all data is publicly available [48][21]. This paves the way for a periodic quality assessment of the XML Web.

Research on Task-Oriented Application Design

Alone with “The Internet of Things” development and expanding in the areas of life, it also brings some big challenges to the traditional software application design and development; especially with the corresponding technologies and strategies of the internet of things enhancement and improvement, and further more with some new equipments and technologies appended or changed in the existing environment, it needs rapidly and easily add some new functionalities to the existing working software applications. But the traditional application design and development still thinking of solution from designers and developers and not from the business point of view, this results in the traditional software applications and its scalability cannot be easily and rapidly satisfy to business requirements. Here, by research on XML, software bus, software component and task-oriented technologies, it illustrates a new way for the software application design and development and try to use task-oriented technology to improve the software application flexibility and scalability to satisfy to enterprise business changes.

AbstractThe introduction of hash objects with SAS® version 9 brought about new opportunities for novel programming techniques. The recent discovery that hash tables can contain even other hash objects, also known as the ‘hash of hashes’, opens the door to their application to hierarchical data structures. This is because hierarchies, like the XML structure, can be considered ‘containers within containers’, and with the hash-of-hashes technique, tables can contain tables, thereby becoming compatible with hierarchical formats. Alternatives to relational database: Comparison of NoSQL and XML approaches for clinical data storage

Clinical data are dynamic in nature, often arranged hierarchically and stored as free text and numbers. Effective management of clinical data and the transformation of the data into structured format for data analysis are therefore challenging issues in electronic health records development. Despite the popularity of relational databases, the scalability of the NoSQL database model and the document-centric data structure of XML databases appear to be promising features for effective clinical data management. In this paper, three database approaches – NoSQL, XML-enabled and native XML – are investigated to evaluate their suitability for structured clinical data. The database query performance is reported, together with our experience in the databases development. The results show that NoSQL database is the best choice for query speed, whereas XML databases are advantageous in terms of scalability, flexibility and extensibility, which are essential to cope with the characteristics of clinical data. While NoSQL and XML technologies are relatively new compared to the conventional relational database, both of them demonstrate potential to become a key database technology for clinical data management as the technology further advances.

With the rapidly development of distance learning and the XML (Extensible Markup Language) technology, metadata becomes an important item in an e-learning system. Today, many distance learning standards such as SCORM, AICC CMI, IEEE LTSC Learning Object Meta-data (LOM), and IMS Learning Resource Metadata XML Binding Specification, use metadata to tag learning materials, shareable content objects, and learning resources. However, most metadata is used to define learning materials and test problems. Few metadata is dedicated for assessment in learning. In this paper, we proposed an assessment metadata model for e-learning operations. With the support from the assessment metadata, we can collect information at the question cognition level, Item Difficulty Index, Item Discrimination Index, questionnaire style, and question style. The assessment analysis model provides individual questions, summary of test results, and analytical suggestions. The suggestions and results can tell teachers why a question is not suitable and how to correct it. Teachers can see the test result analysis and fix some problematic questions. With the cognition level analysis, teachers can correct their cognition level to avoid missing items in teaching. The mechanism developed also suggests to an e-learning system, to adaptive learning content and test to individual learners, as well as provides good advice to the teachers.

Cultural data and semantic technologies

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to present a problem‐based learning case on the use of XML technologies for semantically describing cultural data. Students of three higher and continuing education institutes were divided into groups and were encouraged to solve specific problems and eventually to understand the concepts and the deployment of semantic technologies through their practical involvement. The aims of the teaching approach are for students to become familiar with XML technologies, to annotate historical data and to understand the importance of annotating cultural information for enabling further processing and exploitation of the identified data relationships.Design/methodology/approachInitially the aims of the teaching case were set and specific problems associated with them were designed. A start‐up lecture on the basic concepts of XML was presented and then students were challenged with ill‐defined problems as the problem‐based learning method advises. Students then presented and discussed their solutions and approaches. At the end of each problem‐based section the knowledge of the students was assessed. On the completion of the teaching case, the students' opinions were surveyed and the results towards the approach were very positive.FindingsThe students provided solutions to the problems presented, and their opinions at the end of the teaching approach indicated that students preferred the problem‐based approach to the lecture‐based method. Students argued that, although learning on their own and with little help from the instructors is more demanding, it has specific advantages. They mentioned that they can work at their own pace and better understand the concepts involved. The skills and the knowledge acquired are transferrable to other situations.Originality/valueAlthough the problem‐based learning approach has been applied to medical and gifted education, minimal research has been conducted outside these fields. Therefore, this article focuses on the cultural heritage domain and presents a case of teaching a technical topic to non‐computer science students.

A Comparison of Association Rule Mining Methods for XML Data

With the increasing use of XML technology for data storage and data exchange, mining XML documents has become a researchable subject. This study makes a comparison of three association rule mining methods, the Apriori, FP-growth and AprioriSP, for mining XML data directly with using TinyXML, which is a XML parser implemented in the C++ language. The AprioriSP is proposed to find only short pattern frequent itemsets instead of all frequent ones in order to improve mining efficiency. Comparison experiments of performances of these three methods are performed on XML documents using different datasets and support levels.

A Hierarchical Signal-Space Partitioning Technique for Indoor Positioning with WLAN to Support Location-Awareness in Mobile Map Services

The precise and accurate performance of location estimation is a vital component of context-aware applications. Numerous mobile devices with built-in IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi technology can be used to estimate a user's location through a wireless local area network (WLAN) in indoor environments in which fixed access points are deployed. This study deals with improving the common techniques of such positioning once the acquisition of the fingerprint database in offline phase is performed. The main idea is to propose a methodology that includes two layers of classification: a concurrent hierarchical partitioning of both signal and physical space in a way that signal patterns in each part of building have the highest similarity, and a precise and independent positioning in a given part. A procedure for combining the proposed classifier with either artificial neural network (ANN) or Bayesian probabilistic model is then introduced. We also consider an alternative strategy for ANN learning by including all raw observations. The average distance error was successfully reduced in the proposed methodology by 32 % compared to the simple approach. We concluded that the physical partitioning should also consider the signal behavior. Toosi location-aware mobile system was ultimately implemented, providing different services (e.g., friend finder and nearest point of interest) based on the proposed technique via WLAN. The system benefits from the high level of interaction provided by Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) technology. It is capable of transferring locational data and GIS map services efficiently to the mobile terminal.

A replicated information system to enable dynamic collaborations in the Grid

SUMMARYThe main advantage of Grid computing over other distributed computing paradigms is its capability to coordinate the access to data and resources in a virtual multi‐institutional environment. To this end, the information system plays a decisive role in selecting the services that meet the applications' needs. This paper presents an information system for the Grid that provides transparent and scalable group communication services to standard Grid applications, with the objective of supporting dynamic collaborations that could help address problems that involve only some participants of a virtual organization. In particular, it enables more flexible delivery mechanisms, which allows applications to select the appropriate services before sending their data to the information system. This significantly enhances the protection of data from unauthorized access, and avoids the transmission of unnecessary messages over the network. The proposed information system is based on the use of XML technologies and replication. It introduces several new advanced features that are not currently supported as a whole by any Grid middleware, such as: several entry points to the information, persistent capabilities, support for advanced queries based on XQuery, and support for the industrial standard WS‐Policy. The information system has been stress tested under realistic workloads in a Grid infrastructure with 50 sites. Scalability has been evaluated in up to 1000 messages that can be up to 10KB in size each, updated with a frequency of 5min. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Transparent mediation-based access to multiple yeast data sources using an ontology driven interface

BackgroundSaccharomyces cerevisiae is recognized as a model system representing a simple eukaryote whose genome can be easily manipulated. Information solicited by scientists on its biological entities (Proteins, Genes, RNAs...) is scattered within several data sources like SGD, Yeastract, CYGD-MIPS, BioGrid, PhosphoGrid, etc. Because of the heterogeneity of these sources, querying them separately and then manually combining the returned results is a complex and time-consuming task for biologists most of whom are not bioinformatics expert. It also reduces and limits the use that can be made on the available data.ResultsTo provide transparent and simultaneous access to yeast sources, we have developed YeastMed: an XML and mediator-based system. In this paper, we present our approach in developing this system which takes advantage of SB-KOM to perform the query transformation needed and a set of Data Services to reach the integrated data sources. The system is composed of a set of modules that depend heavily on XML and Semantic Web technologies. User queries are expressed in terms of a domain ontology through a simple form-based web interface.ConclusionsYeastMed is the first mediation-based system specific for integrating yeast data sources. It was conceived mainly to help biologists to find simultaneously relevant data from multiple data sources. It has a biologist-friendly interface easy to use. Enhanced Object Oriented WBEM Enabled Solution forNon-Homogeneous Network

In the present scenario due to rapid growth of Internet, increasing size and complexity of today's distributed network , providing a secure, reliable, efficient computing environment is one of the most challenging task faced by network administrator. Lack of single management model in enterprise management, lack of uniform, consistent framework for managing distributed, non-homogeneous computing environment, lack of standard-based interoperability and security of web technology arise the need of Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) initiatives. The present work depict an Object Oriented WBEM Enabled Solution for non-homogeneous network. It presents the enhance Object Oriented WBEM prototype which consist of gateway. The proposed WBEM is based on binary xml technology called EXI that overcome the limitations of existing binary technology named Fast Infoset (FI). By using EXI in the proposed WBEM prototype efficiency and performance of message communication between WBEM Client and WBEM Server can be increased. A mapping function has been developed that converts WBEM CIM operations into corresponding SNMP and CMIP operations for performing software gateway communication translation operation.
