Language is a need for everyone. Language is also an element of culture and a symbol for a person to communicate all needs. For the Indonesian people, Indonesian has a very important position because Indonesian is the national language and state language. Indonesian as the national language as a nation was built on the basis of ethnic and cultural diversity, Indonesia has good capital in fostering a sense of nationalism and strengthening national identity through the use of Indonesian. The existence of the Indonesian language, which is the identity of the Indonesian nation in the current era of globalization, needs to be fostered and socialized by every Indonesian citizen. This is necessary so that the Indonesian people are not carried away by foreign influences and culture that are not in accordance with the language and culture of the Indonesian people. The influence of such sophisticated communication tools must be faced by maintaining the identity of the Indonesian nation, including the identity of the Indonesian language. This all concerns the discipline of speaking the national language, by complying with all the rules or regulations for using the Indonesian language. Globalization affects all aspects of life, including language. The increasingly global language used by all nations in the world is English, which has more than one billion users.

Language Ideologies and Linguistic Practices of Transgenerational Return Migrants in Galicia

This article explores transgenerational return migration to Galicia, Spain, focusing on participants of the Scholarships for Outstanding Youth Abroad (BEME) programme. It examines how descendants of Galician emigrants, primarily grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Galician emigrants to Latin America, engage with the Spanish and Galician languages. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 30 participants, the article explores participants’ language ideologies regarding Galician as a minoritised language and Spanish as a global language. This article highlights the role of language as a symbolic resource in transgenerational return migration, offering a sociolinguistic perspective to the understanding of this migration phenomenon.

Identification of Seeds of Indian Senna of Commerce

Seeds of 8 species of the Sub-genus Senna under the genus Cassia L. of the family Caesalpiniaceae viz. C. angustifolia Vahl, C. sophera L., C. occidentalis L., C. siamea L., C. obovata collad., C. obtusifolia L., C. tora L. and C. auriculata L. have been studied. Seeds of 7 species have medicinal value but one species-C. obovata has been reported to be mixed with the seeds of C. angustifolia, the Tinnevelly Senna. A key to the species on the basis of seed structure has been provided for easy identification. Local names in major Indian languages have also been given.

A contrastive study of the English and Myanmar configurations of process, participants, and circumstances from the systemic functional perspective

This study seeks to explore the similarities and distinctions inherent in the transitivity configurations of English and Myanmar from the Systemic Functional perspective. The investigation reveals that both languages share a commonality in comprising three fundamental elements: process, participant roles, and circumstantial elements. However, their degree of integration between processes and participants is comparatively limited. Salient distinguishing features emerge in terms of the sequencing of transitivity elements, their ellipsis, and salience. In English transitivity configurations, processes typically manifest after the first or second participant role, or both. In instances involving an empty Subject (It/There), the process immediately ensues. Additionally, the positional relations between processes and participant roles are more numerous. Circumstantial elements conventionally find placement at the clause's outset, between the first participant role and process, between the process and second participant role, or at the clause's conclusion. Ellipsis of participant roles may occur sporadically. Conversely, Myanmar transitivity configurations exhibit participant roles at the clause's beginning, with processes commonly positioned at the clause's culmination. The positional relations between processes and participant roles are less frequent. Circumstantial elements are conventionally situated at the clause's outset, between participant roles, or preceding the process. While ellipsis of processes is infrequent, ellipsis of participant roles transpires more frequently. These findings significantly contribute to the ongoing comparative analysis of transitivity configurations across languages, especially in the context of Myanmar and other global languages.

Examining the Linguistic Tapestry of Globalization: Structural Borrowings

Purpose: Redefining economies, cultures, language dynamics, and societies worldwide, globalization has become one of the hallmarks of the contemporary era. The impact of this phenomenon in language is examined in this article, with a particular emphasis on structural borrowings from English into Albanian. Theoretical Framework: Scientific criteria have been chosen to determine whether the linguistic data are internal constructions of the language or structural borrowings from English, and to examine the extent to which a global language like that has influenced the structure of 'small' languages like Albanian. Methodology: Thirty-three new constructions were chosen from Albanian textual media, which were then split into groups examined in detail according to their semantic and syntactic features. Findings: Fifty-five percent of native speakers accept semantic-syntactic borrowings from English, which exhibit synonymy and compete with existing normative constructions. Borrowings enhancing the semantics of Albanian are welcome, while those affecting syntactic structure and leading to ambiguity, meaninglessness, and ungrammaticality are not. Research Practical and Social Implication: The knowledge of how syntactic-semantic systems can be modified and impacted by interaction with other language systems is increased by this work. Simultaneously, it advances our understanding of the social dimensions of language use, including language planning and identity maintenance in the area of globalization. Originality/Value: The connections between ‘small’ languages like Albanian and world culture have not received adequate consideration. This study advances our understanding of how globalization impacts communication between speakers of diverse languages and cultural backgrounds by shedding light on the process of structural borrowings.

ET-Network: A novel efficient transformer deep learning model for automated Urdu handwritten text recognition.

Automatic Urdu handwritten text recognition is a challenging task in the OCR industry. Unlike printed text, Urdu handwriting lacks a uniform font and structure. This lack of uniformity causes data inconsistencies and recognition issues. Different writing styles, cursive scripts, and limited data make Urdu text recognition a complicated task. Major languages, such as English, have experienced advances in automated recognition, whereas low-resource languages, such as Urdu, still lag. Transformer-based models are promising for automated recognition in high- and low-resource languages such as Urdu. This paper presents a transformer-based method called ET-Network that integrates self-attention into EfficientNet for feature extraction and a transformer for language modeling. The use of self-attention layers in EfficientNet helps to extract global and local features that capture long-range dependencies. These features proceeded into a vanilla transformer to generate text, and a prefix beam search is used for the finest outcome. NUST-UHWR, UPTI2.0, and MMU-OCR-21 are three datasets used to train and test the ET Network for a handwritten Urdu script. The ET-Network improved the character error rate by 4% and the word error rate by 1.55%, while establishing a new state-of-the-art character error rate of 5.27% and a word error rate of 19.09% for Urdu handwritten text.

Anglicisms in Omani Arabic: A Study on the Use, Status, and Perception of English Loanwords

The growing dominance of English in fields such as education, technology, business, culture, and politics across the globe has contributed to the existence and spread of Anglicisms in world languages. The use of anglicisms, English loanwords, is a global phenomenon that has a significant impact not only on international communication exchanges but also on people's native languages. Modern varieties of Arabic, including Omani Arabic, are no exception to this growing trend. This research is an attempt to investigate the status of Anglicisms in Omani Arabic. The aim is to determine the factors promoting the use of Anglicisms in day-to-day interactions and people's attitudes towards them. As a method of data collection, the study used focus group discussions that included seventy undergraduate students. The findings of the study showed that anglicisms are consistently used by young Omanis in face-to-face and virtual interactions. Furthermore, the findings revealed that a large number of anglicisms have undergone morphological and phonological adaptation and thus been incorporated into the lexicon of Omani Arabic. This rising trend of anglicisms can be attributed to certain factors including a) the influence and prestige of Anglo-American culture, b) the influence of information and communication technology, c) the internationalization of education, d) lexical voids in the native language, and e) conciseness and expressiveness of English loanwords. Finally, apart from some voices against the unnecessary use of anglicisms in the language, the younger generation seems to accept and have a positive attitude towards the use of English loanwords in day-to-day interactions.

The Effect of Dopamine Stimulation Activities on English Language Learners: An Empirical Research

This study explores the perceptions of dopamine-stimulating activities among students and the challenges faced by teachers in implementing these activities in language education at Dai Nam University. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys and semi-structured interviews with 220 non-English major students and language teachers. The surveys assessed students' perceptions of various dopamine-stimulating activities, including gamified vocabulary acquisition courses, interactive language games, reward-based speaking activities, physical activity breaks, and project-based learning with rewards. Results indicate varying perceptions across academic years, with first-year students expressing the highest perceptions of effectiveness, followed by a decreasing trend in perceptions among higher-year students. Teachers reported challenges such as balancing novelty with meeting specific learning objectives, resource constraints, and classroom management difficulties. Qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with language teachers provided additional insights into the challenges and strategies encountered in implementing dopamine-stimulating activities. Themes emerged around the excitement and perceived effectiveness of these activities, specific activities utilized by teachers (such as interactive games, multimedia presentations, and real-world simulations), challenges faced, positive outcomes observed (including enhanced student engagement, participation, and language proficiency), and the need for flexibility and creativity in overcoming challenges. The study highlights the importance of considering students' perceptions and challenges faced by teachers in optimizing the effectiveness of dopamine-stimulating activities in language education. Tailored approaches to address varying perceptions and challenges are necessary to ensure meaningful engagement and promote effective language learning experiences. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on innovative pedagogical approaches in language education and offer practical implications for educators seeking to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

English as a global language in China

While the first decade of the 21st century witnessed an unprecedented level of popularity in English across China, the last ten years have seen a fall in the status of English and a meteoric rise of the importance of the Chinese language and culture in the education system (Feng & Adamson, 2019; Pan & Wang, 2024). The changed status of English was exemplified in the 2017 English curriculum standards (2017 ECS) for senior high school students (aged 16–18). A few years after the implementation of this curriculum, this paper explores how teachers and students perceive the changed status of English as prescribed in the 2017 ECS, and what this means for the role of English as a ‘global language’ in China.

Impact of English-Speaking Environments and Chinese Language Pronunciation on the Speaking Proficiency of English Learners in China: A Comprehensive Study.

English is widely regarded as a global language, and it has become increasingly important for global communication. As a result, the demand for English language education has been on the rise. In China, a significant number of individuals are engaged in learning the English language. However, many English learners in China encounter challenges when it comes to developing their speaking skills. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the speaking skills of English learners in China. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through a questionnaire from 455 college students from three different courses (arts, science & business, and commerce) in China. The study findings identified several factors impacting the speaking skills of English learners in China, including limited opportunities for speaking practice, fear of making mistakes, limited exposure to English-speaking environments, inadequate teacher training, and the influence of the Chinese language on English pronunciation. Additionally, the study highlighted that learners who have greater exposure to English-speaking environments and more opportunities for speaking practice tend to demonstrate better speaking skills. The novelty of this study lies in its valuable insights into the factors influencing the speaking skills of English learners in China. Based on the findings, it is recommended that English teachers receive enhanced training to effectively teach speaking skills, and learners should be provided with increased opportunities for speaking practice, such as participating in group discussions or engaging in speaking activities.

FBXO11 variants are associated with intellectual disability and variable clinical manifestation in Chinese affected individuals.

F-box protein 11 (FBXO11) is a member of F-Box protein family, which has recently been proved to be associated with intellectual developmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and behavioral abnormalities (IDDFBA, OMIM: 618089). In this study, 12 intellectual disability individuals from 5 Chinese ID families were collected, and whole exome sequencing (WES), sanger sequencing, and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) were conducted. Almost all the affected individuals presented with mild to severe intellectual disability (12/12), global developmental delay (10/12), speech and language development delay (8/12) associated with a range of alternate features including increased body weight (7/12), short stature (6/12), seizures (3/12), reduced visual acuity (4/12), hypotonia (1/12), and auditory hallucinations and hallucinations (1/12). Distinguishingly, malformation was not observed in all the affected individuals. WES analysis showed 5 novel FBXO11 variants, which include an inframe deletion variant, a missense variant, two frameshift variants, and a partial deletion of FBXO11 (exon 22-23). RNA-seq indicated that exon 22-23 deletion of FBXO11 results in a new mRNA structure. Conservation and protein structure prediction demonstrated deleterious effect of these variants. The DEGs analysis revealed 148 differentially expressed genes shared among 6 affected individuals, which were mainly associated with genes of muscle and immune system. Our research is the first report of FBXO11-associated IDDFBA in Chinese individuals, which expands the genetic and clinical spectrum of this newly identified NDD/ID syndrome.

Multi Task Learning Based Shallow Parsing for Indian Languages

Shallow Parsing is an important step for many Natural Language Processing tasks. Although shallow parsing has a rich history for resource rich languages, it is not the case for most Indian languages. Shallow Parsing consists of POS Tagging and Chunking. Our study focuses on developing shallow parsers for Indian languages. As part of shallow parsing we included morph analysis as well. For the study, we first consolidated available shallow parsing corpora for 7 Indian Languages (Hindi, Kannada, Bangla, Malayalam, Marathi, Urdu, Telugu) for which treebanks are publicly available. We then trained models to achieve state of the art performance for shallow parsing in these languages for multiple domains. Since analyzing the performance of model predictions at sentence level is more realistic, we report the performance of these shallow parsers not only at the token level, but also at the sentence level. We also present machine learning techniques for multitask shallow parsing. Our experiments show that fine-tuned contextual embedding with multi-task learning improves the performance of multiple as well as individual shallow parsing tasks across different domains. We show the transfer learning capability of these models by creating shallow parsers (only with POS and Chunk) for Gujarati, Odia, and Punjabi for which no treebanks are available. As a part of this work, we will be releasing the Indian Languages Shallow Linguistic (ILSL) benchmarks for 10 Indian languages including both the major language families Indo-Aryan and Dravidian as common building blocks that can be used to evaluate and understand various linguistic phenomena found in Indian languages and how well newer approaches can tackle them.

Glocalization: an analysis into it’s conceptual and strategic underpinnings

Glocalization is a “simultaneity—the co-presence—of both universalizing and particularizing tendencies” emphasizing the need for tempering the effects of local conditions on global pressures. While the increasing presence of best-known fast food chain restaurants worldwide such as McDonald’s and KFC is a manifestation of globalization, the shrewd and strategic adaptations of their menu to satiate the local palates and tastes by these “Glocal Enterprises” is illustrative of glocalization. Conversely, the chief point of glocalization perspective is: “even the most local ways of carrying out business operations are more and more co-constituted by economic and social trends that are most global.” Language has a huge role to play in addressing the cultural and linguistic barriers and designing a successful global talent management and language learning solution that is complemented by local support. When used as an extension of the “Think Global, Act Local” grassroots movement, glocalization also refers to market advantage of local businesses versus global companies. In the face of globalization, both the little guys and would-be entrepreneurs can emerge triumphant by tapping into their hometown markets and then scaling up. However, it is imperative that MNCs restructure the national economies to become and remain more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive in their globalization to glocalization migration odyssey. An attempt would be made in this conceptual Paper to address this issue—a challenge and an opportunity—for the key players by enumerating the stories of successful transition into glocalization by several popular Multi National Corporations in the Indian context.

Third language English performance at the onset of schooling: effects of bilingualism and exposure in Catalan-Spanish bilingual children

ABSTRACT Research on the effects of bilingualism on third language (L3) development set in bilingual communities is scarce, outdated, and has provided mixed results. This study investigated the effects of exposure and age of onset of acquisition (AOA) of L3-English, as well as first and second language (L1/L2) skills and use, in the development of L3-English lexical and grammatical receptive abilities in Catalan-Spanish bilingual learners in Catalonia. The study followed a longitudinal design with three data collection times: Times 1 and 2 took place at the onset and the end of Grade 1, respectively, and Time 3 happened at the end of Grade 2. Results showed an overall growth of vocabulary and grammar over the first two years of primary schooling. In addition to testing time, L3-English exposure outside of school predicted higher receptive vocabulary and grammar skills, whereas an older English AOA predicted lower skills. The L1/L2 variables showed different associations to the vocabulary and grammar scores. However, the minoritized language, Catalan, bore a stronger association with the two L3 outcomes than the majority language, Spanish.

Language Errors among Iranian EFL Students with High and Low Levels of Writing Anxiety

Writing is known as one of the major important language skills and it is the most difficult language skills for most EFL and ESL learners. In addition, anxiety is one of the factors that many language learners face with it in the writing process. This paper examines language errors among Iranian students of English with high and low levels of writing anxiety. For this purpose, 250 English language learners from universities of the south of Iran were participated in this research. This research used two tools to collect data: the Second Language Writing Anxiety Questionnaire (SLWAI), which was a pre-test containing 22 items and three subscales of physical anxiety, avoidance behavior, and cognition based on a Likert point scale. In addition, a language test in the form of essay writing was used to recognize their different categories and main errors in the writing performance. The results of this research showed that there is a negative relationship between students' anxiety and the number of errors in their writing performance. This study discusses the implications of this finding for English language learners and teachers.

What does linguistic structure tell us about language ideologies?

Abstract This paper examines how bilingual and monolingual German speakers’ language use reflects underlying linguistic ideologies. I present a corpus study on bilingual and monolingual German speakers, focusing on phonological, lexical, and discourse pragmatic features. The data suggest that bilingual speakers use more markers of formal language and fewer markers of informal language in formal communicative situations than monolingual speakers. I argue that this is due to monolingual ideologies and standard language ideologies, particularly influencing these formal settings in bilingual speakers. These ideological patterns may lead to linguistic pressure in bilingual speakers to align with the monolingual majority, a phenomenon related to majority language anxiety. Complementing the corpus analysis, semi-structured interviews with bilingual speakers provide personal insights, further illuminating how linguistic ideologies shape their linguistic choices and social experiences.

The Origins and Destinations of Captives from the Bight of Biafra, 1807–1843: New Evidence from the Identification of African Names and Languages

ABSTRACT Between 1807 and 1843, British naval officers liberated more than thirty thousand Africans from slave vessels that embarked enslaved people along the Bight of Biafra. Large ledger books display these Liberated Africans’ names, sexes, ages, and other characteristics. The names, many of which are easily recognizable today, provide clues about individuals pulled into the transatlantic trade and reveal a range of experiences that shaped the lives of Africans in the nineteenth century. Connecting the names to ethnolinguistic homelands helps establish a rough place of origin for more than twelve thousand of the individuals. The data underscore the centrality of Igbo-speakers – the major language in the Bight of Biafra hinterland – to the region’s slave trade. Given the representative nature of the ethnolinguistic makeup of the individuals to the broader slave trade from the Bight of Biafra, we use the intended destinations of the captured vessels as a basis for projecting the size and direction of the transatlantic diaspora of Igbo-speakers. Despite their limited cultural impact on African and African-descended regions in the Americas, large numbers of captives from Igbo-speaking communities were sent to almost every plantation society in the New World in the nineteenth century.

The Impact of English Language Proficiency on Business

English is important in the era of globalization. It is the most widely used global language and is the main language for international business. To succeed in today's global market, it's crucial to master English and other languages. High English proficiency helps individuals communicate effectively in SAARC, BIMSTEC, and EU member states. In business, English is a universal language that promotes effective communication and collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Effective communication is extremely important in business operations. Without seamless collaboration among producers, distributors, and consumers, entrepreneurial efficacy declines. Learning English allows us to confidently communicate with people from different countries and build meaningful relationships.

Legal Protection of Linguistic Minority under Discrimination: The Case of Anglophone Cameroon

The minority English-speaking population in Cameroon, where French is the majority language, has a number of political, economic, and social complaints that collectively make up the "Anglophone problem." These grievances are described using the terms discrimination, marginalization, and second-class citizenship. The right to speak English in Cameroon must always be upheld as a fundamental right. To protect the rights of minorities, Cameroon has established a number of laws. Since Cameroon and many other countries have ratified a number of human rights instruments, it is the state's duty to safeguard all the rights guaranteed by these instruments, including those of minorities. As demonstrated by the current crisis, another escalation in that cycle, there are several political systemic deficiencies that need to be closed if Cameroon is to grow as a single nation. Greater localized control over political and financial resources might be necessary to achieve this. In order to better serve the needs of citizens, existing institutions and leadership structures must become more accommodating.

Turkic-Chinese lexical parallels within the framework of the phonological model SASYS

Relevance. Considering the constant development of global language contacts and cultural interactions, examining the mechanisms of interaction between the Turkic and Chinese languages is of great importance for identifying the mechanisms of borrowing words and analysing cultural and historical ties between these language groups. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to examine and identify the features of the processes of mutual influence, assimilation, and development of lexical elements of the Turkic and Chinese languages. Methodology. The study uses linguistic, comparative, and lexical-semantic methods to analyse etymological pairs and phonological adaptation between the Kyrgyz and Chinese languages. Results. The study identifies both similarities and differences in the phonetic implementation of single-root lexemes between Chinese and Turkic languages within the SASYS phonetic model. Attention is paid to sound combinations, accents, and phonetic features, establishing patterns in their structure and evolution. The phenomena of phonetic borrowing and adaptation in both languages are identified, and influenced by cultural and historical contexts. Additionally, the study confirms a tendency to simplify sound structures in some Turkic languages compared to more persistent phonetic forms in Chinese. Conclusions. The analysis determines the origin of various interlanguage and intercultural words. Single-root lexemes passing between Chinese and Turkic languages undergo systematic phonetic changes, adapting sound combinations and accents to conform to the phonetic rules of the recipient language. The results highlight the SASYS phonetic model's importance for understanding phonetic evolution and adaptation between these languages, emphasizing their deep historical and cultural ties.
