The Image of Women’s Upper Commercial Schools in Hungarian Pedagogy in the First Half of the 20th Century

Abstract
 
 The purpose of this study is to examine what image the journal Hungarian Pedagogy conveyed about women's upper commercial schools in Hungary. The articles were reviewed for the period between 1909 and 1938. In connection with the writings, we are looking for answers to the following questions: Does the journal address women’s upper commercial schools? What is the gender distribution of the authors? What views does the author convey about the school? How do the publications fit into the portrayal of women of the era? In total, we found four relevant articles by two authors. Both represent a conservative point of view and speak rather negatively about the type of school.

The dominance of consumer ideology and the prejudices of the patriarchal discourse system have kept women in a "low-dimensional prison" where they have been stared at for a long time. Since the growth of "her power", more and more public spheres are showing female consciousness and female discourse. The portrayal of women's roles and the construction of meaning in realist films express the "absence" and "resistance" of women's image in contemporary society. The young girls who want to break out of their cages, the mothers who are burdened by their families, and the women of the underclass who have a dual nature are the objects of their expression. "The absence of the family", the growth of the self and the "motherly nature" are the deep-seated "references" to which the female characters are trapped in the "prison".

Cardiovascular Imaging in Women with Heart Diseases, A local Clinical Practice Guidelines for Pakistani Population

This is the first time that a local preliminary document on gender differences in CVDs has been initiated in Pakistan. International forum has been highlighting significant gender and ethnicity in CVDs. So different countries from world took the initiative to develop their local guideline or clinical scientific statements on gender differences with different socio-cultural and educational background for their own countries. GRFW in collaboration with Scientific Council of Women with Heart Disease PCS Pakistan floated this idea to develop a local guideline in various aspects CVDs for our own women population. In this regard different topics were assigned to different groups including mostly female cardiologists, senior gynecologists/obstetricians and radiologist from all over Pakistan. Primary objectives of this write up on Cardiac Imaging in Women is to provide a local clinical practice guideline for the assessment and management of CVD that will improve and standardize the physicians’ decision making for Pakistani women population. In the setting of growing awareness of providing personalized precision medicine, addressing sex differences in CVD is a key goal. The intention is to inform cardiologists, non-cardiologist physicians’, general practitioners, and, obstetrician/gynecologists about the reasonable use and understanding of technologies to help in proper approach to their treating women with HDs and when to send them for cardiac specialist diagnostic center. As we could not find our own local data on cardiac imaging to report at present, most recommendations on cardiac imaging used has been taken from international literatures (which we have found feasible, readily available, and some cost effective approach in our money constraint society which can be followed in our population) and also which were published within the past decade were given priority. In this document, we discuss the role of using different cardiac imaging modalities, with a focus on diseases which are unique/or occur more in women. So, five women specific topics more commonly seen in our population were selected currently, which are (stable/unstable angina and ACS, MINOCA), non-ischemic CMP, HD during pregnancy, cardio-oncology, and connective tissue diseases (CTD). In these topics we have tried to used our own local incidences and prevalence of these diseases in our community/internationally on gender basis and have highlighted the availability/limitations of cardiac imaging in our society. The updated recommendations in women have been taken from international guidelines. Graphs and tables layout has been taken from abroad literatures and made some few changes according to its use in our population. You will find this a preliminary review document which will be simple to read, have updated approach in evaluating the diagnosis of HD in women easily. For current cost effectiveness issues for our population will be taken up by PCS to Health ministries of Pakistan for its making it easily availability with cheap cost so to benefit our female (very neglected and ill informed) with CVD population.

The Analysis of Female Characters in the Golden Age of Hollywood

The United States experienced a 25% unemployment rate in 1929 as a result of the Great Depression. More than 5,000 banks in the United States announced closure, and more than 80,000 businesses filed for bankruptcy as a direct result of the Great Depression. Everyone was drowning in the woes of being unemployed. However, Hollywood movies provided a pastime for people who were suffering every day during the Great Depression. Although the 1930s was the worst time for the U.S. economy, it was the golden age of Hollywood. The 1930s to the late 1940s are referred to as the Golden Age of Hollywood, in which Hollywood dominated the film industry. Women on screen have many images, but all these female portraits cannot be separated from men. Women's life at that time was inextricably linked with men's. This paper analyzes women's images from the Golden Age of Hollywood movies. The purpose is to explain how the portrayal of women on screen reflects the status of women in society at the time and what factors led to such a portrayal of women on screen. The paper found that the most impactful factors are women's jobs taken by men during the Great Depression, the dominant social consciousness of masculinity, and the desire for male voyeurism.

Comparison of Characteristics of Female Images in Russian and Chinese Rural Prose

The article compares systematically the works of Russian rural prose school and Chinese Beijing school from the point of view of reflection of female image in the works, analyzes the similarities and differences between them, as well as the reasons for their emergence from the position of comparative literary typology, taking into account the ontology of creativity. The village is the land where Russian and Chinese cultures grew and flourished, and rural literature written in the village gained a high reputation in both Russia and China during the period of great social transformations. The subject of the study is the characteristics of women's images in Russian and Chinese literature. The aim of the work is to analyze and compare female images in authors from Russia and China. Research methods – analysis of literary sources on the topic of research. Results of the research: the study of literary works from Russia and China on the theme of rural life was carried out, the portrayal of the female image by the authors of the two countries was compared. Conclusion. The works show an attempt to transform society through the pursuit of traditional culture and morality, in order to achieve an ideal state of society, full of love and freedom. The similarity of national-cultural narratives, themes and artistic styles makes the works of the Russian rural prose school comparable to the works of the Chinese Beijing school of simple fiction, but the differences between the historical and cultural background, religious beliefs and poetic soil of Russia and China make the works of these two schools of writing somewhat different.

Hegemonic Gaze: Tyranny, Media Chauvinism and the Image of Women - Based on Chinese Mainstream Media’s News Coverage of Ailing Gu's Winter Olympics Victory

During the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, Chinese freeskier Ailing Gu received much media attention. Past literature and journalistic practice on the media and sport suggest that sport has been an area of absolute male hegemony since ancient times and that the media is constructed around hegemonic male values that help to reinforce ‘historical gender norms. This paper examines the construction of Ailing Gu’s image of the ‘other’ in the media frameworks and discourses based on news stories about her in the official and commercial media. The study finds that the deconstruction of Ailing Gu’s image as an athlete in the news coverage, which appears to reinforce the discourse of female athletes, still serves the ultimate goal of male domination and remains, in essence, a chauvinistic and hegemonic gaze.

The Images of Women in the Films on Ethnic Minority Subjects in the New Period

Women in films are portrayed as the “ Others”, the victims of a patriarchal society and a vulnerable group, and since the 1970s, the image of women in Chinese films has shifted from the traditional “virtuous wife and mother” to the “Others”. This paper analyses the images of women in minority films in the new period from three perspectives: ethnic consciousness, traditional and modern factors, and social transformation.

A Pragmatic Analysis of Woman's Images in Selected English and Arabic Proverbs

This study is within the framework of linguistics that tries to analyze written and spoken discourse and study its features through pragmatic tools to understand the process of communication. The study mainly aims to seek the meaning through pragmatic analysis to reveal both negative and positive depiction about women in some English and Arabic proverbs. The samples were taken from different written and spoken sources. The study concluded that proverb had various expressions that consist of imperative, prohibitive, conditional and compound negative construction. Semantic meaning is different from pragmatic function that is related to the background story of the proverb used to support; object of ridicule the context if it is violates the human civilizational norms.

Deconstructing Authority with Humor - The Cultural Adaptation and Reinvention of Women’s Discourse in Stand-Up Comedy of China

This paper explores the adaptation and alienation of Western postmodern approaches to female empowerment in China through an analysis of female discourse in the stand-up comedy industry. I used textual analysis to examine the discourses and audience feedback of female performers in the representative Chinese talk show "Rock & Roast". The results of this paper are divided into two parts: 1. the three main portraits and discourse strategies of female stand-up comedians extracted from their words; and 2. a comparison of public opinion on the acceptance of different female discourses and images in the first part with the audience's evaluation. The findings of the study show that female stand-up comedians are mainly moulded through language into three categories: women in traditional relationships, feminist fighters and highly educated independent women. The audience's feedback suggests that a new system of authoritative judgement between Western thought and traditional Chinese gender values is in the process of being born. In stand-up comedy, a model image of women that demands independence but without touching on gender issues is being promoted as the "most qualified" representation of women's image. The category of female discourse has an underlying premise of male discourse, and thus all talk of female discourse is inextricably bound up with male-centrism. Here, the term discourse is important for all normative forms of human life, in addition to what is commonly thought of as forms of speech. For example, Foucault's discourse of power and Said's theory of postcolonial discourse in the East start from all normative forms in life. When we analyze women's discourse in Chinese communication, we also focus on the normative forms of their lives in addition to words, exploring the crux of the problem from the deep psychological factors of culture, history, and anthropology.Generally speaking, women's discourse in contemporary Chinese communication is often characterized by several problems: misinterpretation, deflection, and pleasing, etc. Even though there are a number of feminist movements in contemporary China, they may not be able to truly and correctly address feminist issues. This does not lie in the strength of male power in China, but in the biased arguments and misperceptions of this issue in women's visions.

The image of women in the novel Masyitoh by Ajip Rosidi

Novels as part of literary works always present various social realities. One of the presented social realities is the existence of quite complex gender relations and routines. This study aims to describe the image of women in the novel Masyitoh by Ajip Rosidi. The study of women's image is focused on four aspects, namely physical aspects, psychological aspects, aspects in the family environment, and aspects in the community environment. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. Research data in the form of sentence quotations were collected through the reading-note technique. After being collected, the data were processed and analyzed using interactive techniques. The results of the research show that the image of women in Masyitoh's novel is very complex and diverse. From a physical perspective, women are portrayed as beautiful and graceful. Viewed from the psychological aspect, the female antagonist is portrayed as a violent character, while the female protagonist is imaged as a woman who has concerns, is firm in her mind, is courageous, and is patient. Viewed from the family aspect, women are portrayed as responsible, caring and compassionate, loyal and open. Meanwhile, from the perspective of their relationship with society, women are portrayed as humanists, humble, and powerful.

Kutsal metinlerde genel olarak kadın imgesi olumsuz anlamlara gelebilecek şekilde kullanılabilmektedir. Özellikle Hristiyanlıktaki kutsal metinlerde bu olumsuz çağrışımları içeren örnekler sıkça yer almaktadır. Bu metinlerde kadın, büyük oranda ikincil konumdadır ve çoğu kez de kötülük ve günahla vasıflandırılmıştır. İşte bu açıdan Havva figürü büyük önem arz etmektedir. Çünkü Havva ilk günahkâr ve dolayısıyla tüm kadınların bir prototipidir. Hristiyan düşüncesine göre, İsa’nın annesi Meryem, Havva’nın günahının temizlenmesinde büyük bir role sahiptir. İlk günahı işleyen nasıl bir kadınsa, o günahtan insanlığı kurtaran da bir kadındır. Bu anlamda Kutsal Ruh’tan gebe kalan ve kurtarıcı İsa’yı doğuran Meryem, Hristiyan tarihi boyunca kadınlara bir ideal olarak sunulmuştur. Bu anlayışın kökeni nereye dayanmaktadır? Günahkâr Havva ve antitezi Bakire Meryem neyi sembolize etmektedir? İşte bu çalışmada Hristiyanlıkta kutsallık atfedilecek kadar değerli görülen Bakire Meryem ile insanoğlunun düşüşünden sorumlu tutulan günahkâr Havva arasına sıkıştırılan kadın imgesinin tahlil edilmesi hedeflenmektedir.

The Influence of Patriarchal Culture, Motivation and Image on Women's Political Participation in the Regional Representatives Council of North Sulawesi Province

The General Election Commissions Regulation No. 7 of 2013 states that in submitting a list of candidates for political parties, women must include at least 30% of each electoral district. This is intended to minimize the dominance of men in political power, especially in the Legislature. This is due to the fact that the condition of women in politics is still considered marginalized when compared to the position of men. This is because the system of culture, education, economic level and others are still in favor of men. So that the position of women is disadvantaged in the political arena. Therefore, the involvement of women in politics will become an Affirmative Action which requires that women need to be involved in political activities, both at the political party level and at the government level. This study aims to determine whether there is an influence between Motivation, Patriarchal Culture and Image on the Level of Women's Political Participation, especially in the Legislature of North Sulawesi Province. This study uses a quantitative research method based on positivistic (concrete data). The research data is in the form of numbers that will be measured using statistics as a calculation test tool. Data analysis used SPSS 26. The results of the study proved that patriarchal culture had a significant effect on women's political participation, motivation had a significant effect on women's political participation, imagery had a significant effect on women's political participation, patriarchal motivation and Imaging together has significantly influenced women's political participation.

The Image of Women in the Contemporary Algerian Novel (The Throne of Lovers) by (Rabia Djelti) as a model

This research paper aims to reveal the position of women in the contemporary Algerian novel, as the basic building block of society accompanied by men. To depict the life of the heroine (Nujoud-Zleikha), her psychological suffering, she lost her parents, to find herself in the arms of her aunt, who was suffering from barrenness. In addition to her ugly features and repulsive form, and the novelist mentioned many feminist personalities, such as (the heroine's aunt, Nujood (the heroine's sister), Mahdia, the fighter Noura, Halima, the midwife, Soso..) , and other personalities that reflected certain social conditions. This novel exposed reality, which reflects the consolidation of the male mentality and considers that the birth of a female is a cause for bad luck, , with social, political, cultural and artistic dimensions, trying to prove the status and role of women in life.

“Every Now and Then, a Floor Rag Flies at Me": The Politics of Cleanliness in the Art of Mizrahi Women

How does Zionism's relation to Mizrahi women affect their situated imagination of identity? This article offers an answer to the question through a close reading of artworks by third-generation Mizrahi women artists. In their works the artists reveal a struggle between their lived experience of an emotional burden; an intergenerational inheritance assigned to them against their will: cleaning work, and the desire to imagine a future beyond it and the social limitations that constructed it. Against the backdrop of this struggle, and in response to it, I argue that the artists use their work as an arena of Mizrahi feminist situated imagination through which they negotiate their forced identity and resist the emotional politics in Mizrahi women's cleaning work using artistic identity management strategies to seek a sense of worth. They do so while creating a shift from the institutional construction of Mizrahi women's image in Zionist visual colonial archives as the voiceless racialized intranational "others" of Zionism, to their own self-imaging.

Image of Women’s Body as Inspiration in Creating Mix Media Painting. Body image is a person's perception that is influenced by the mentality of one's observations and judgments about oneself in terms of appearance, ability, and personality. Perception of body shape, body weight, height, hair type, skin color, way of speaking, way of socializing, and how one wants to be the ideal type of society. This creation aims to describe positive body image concepts and ideas in the form of digital and conventional art as well as to voice how important positive body image is for a person, specifically a woman. This creation has several stages, including: 1) Exploration stage (collecting data from various sources). This data then becomes the inspiration and message content in this conventional and digital art work. This digital concept was chosen to match the theme of body image, 2) The improvisation stage (designing an image) determines the visual form to have a design style according to existing concepts such as a female object, several additional supporting objects and the creative tools. 3) The visualization stage (crafting process) choosing colorful colors in accordance with the style of a cheerful woman, and being able to convey the message contained well by the community. The results of the process of creating this art are 7 pieces of paintings using canvas media and a mix of conventional media. Presenting a painting exhibition that is packaged neatly and nicely, and presents a visual concept of women's beauty standards that are in accordance with the author's goal, namely to voice arguments about the importance of body image for women. Women's Image Exploitation in Television News of Aisha Weddings

Women's images in the media are exciting. When the role of women in society shifts, the media will shape public perception. Verbal exploitation has ended. Aisha Weddings presents women as commercial products by selling early marriage, unregistered marriage, and polygamy in the media. This study aims to show the depiction of the exploitation of the image of women in Aisha Weddings on television. The approach used is qualitative with a critical paradigm, and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method consists of Denotation, Connotation, and Myth. The results of this study indicate that Aisha Weddings uses the image of women in the mass media in 3 categories, namely the image of the pillar that the image of women is considered the main object in forming a harmonious family, the image of the contest that women can meet the needs of their husbands both physically and mentally as a wife, and the image of association that women are considered to have unstable emotional and thinking aspects. The phenomenon of exploitation carried out by Aisha Weddings is included in the sexualization of news by using image objects and writing down articles or photo captions whose contents corner the image of women in society and pornography using female adolescent models as supporting images. There are three streams of Feminism contained in the news of Aisha Weddings on television, namely Liberal Feminism marked by Aisha Weddings forming the image of young women to get married immediately to have a better and secure future, Marxist Feminism marked by Aisha Weddings forming a class system in marriage making men feel more in control of women's lives. Existentialist Feminism is characterized by women having only two roles, namely the role of mother and wife.

An Evaluation on the Image of Women in Oya Katoglu's Works

Çağdaş Türk resminin önemli kadın sanatçılarından olan Oya Katoğlu, sanat kariyeri boyunca resimlerinde farklı teknikler kullanarak birçok konuyu ele almış, çok yönlü bir sanatçıdır. Katoğlu’nun çalıştığı temalardan biri olan kadın teması, sanatçının sıklıkla kullandığı bir konudur. Bu kapsamda araştırmada Oya Katoğlu’nun kadın temasını işlediği resim ve kitap kapak kompozisyonları ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada, sanatçının diğer konuları kadar önemli bir yer tutan kadın temasını gün ışığına çıkarmak amaçlanmıştır. Konu hakkında yazılmış akademik bir çalışmanın olmaması araştırmayı önemli kılar. Katoğlu ilk resimlerinde Anadolu kadınlarının hayatına yönelirken, geç dönem çalışmalarında ise kadın figürlerini dışavurumcu bir yaklaşımla resmetmiştir. Tuvallerinde bu temayı istikrarlı olarak görselleştiren sanatçının çalışmaları, kadın konulu yazın dünyasının kitaplarını süslemiştir. Oya Katoğlu, kadın sanatçıların yer aldığı dünya çapında düzenlenen yarışmalara katılarak dereceler elde etmiştir. Katoğlu naif bir ressam olmasına rağmen konularında toplumsal ve eleştirel çalışmalara yer vermesi yönüyle diğer Türk naiflerini etkilemiştir.
