Influence of Bed Depth on the Development of Tropical Ornamental Plants in Subsurface Flow Treatment Wetlands for Municipal Wastewater Treatment: A Pilot-Scale Case.

The aim of this 2-year study was to evaluate the influence of bed depth (40 and 60 cm) on the development of tropical ornamental species (Alpinia purpurata, Heliconia latispatha and Strelitzia reginae) and on the removal of different contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (N-NO3), ammonium (N-NH4), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), total coliforms (TCs) and fecal coliforms (FCs), in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) for municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that the depth of 60 cm favored the removal of COD, with removal efficiencies of 94% for the three plant species. The depth of 40 cm was most effective for the removal of N-NH4 (80-90%). Regarding the removal of TN, the removals were similar for the different plants and depths (72-86%). The systems only achieved up to 60% removal of TCs and FCs. The depth of the CWs substrate and its saturation level influenced the development of ornamental vegetation, particularly flower production. For Heliconia latispatha, a bed depth level of 60 cm was more suitable, while for Alpinia purpurata 40 cm was better, and for Strelitzia reginae in both cases there was no flower production. The impact of bed depth on contaminant removal depends on the specific type of contaminant.

Horizontal flow aerated constructed wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment: The influence of bed depth

The influence of bed depth on the performance of aerated horizontal constructed wetlands was investigated at the pilot plant scale. Two horizontal flow subsurface constructed wetlands (HF) intensified units of different bed depth (HF1: 0.90 m and HF2: 0.55 m, 0.8 m and 0.5 m water level, respectively) were fitted with forced aeration, while a third one (HFc, 0.55 m bed depth, 0.5 m water level) was used as control and not aerated. The three HF units were operated in parallel, receiving the same municipal wastewater pre-treated in a hydrolytic up-flow sludge blanket anaerobic digester. Applied surface loading rates (SLR) ranged from 20 to 80 g biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5)/m2·d and from 3.7 to 6.7 g total nitrogen (TN)/m2·d, while it ranges from 6 to 23 g BOD5/m2·d and from 1.1 to 1.7 g TN/m2·d in the control unit. Removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and BOD5 was usually close to a 100 % in all units, whilst chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was higher for the HF1 unit (97 % on average, range of 96–99 %) than for HF2 (92 %, 82–98 %) and HFc (94 %, 86–99 %). TN removal reached on average 33 % (16–43 %) in HFc, 37 % (10–76 %) in HF2 and 51 % (21–79 %) in HF1. High TN removal required a longer aeration time for nitrification and higher effluent recirculation ratio to enhance denitrification. The results indicate that artificial aeration and a high bed depth allows to increase the SLR by a factor of 4 in HF1 but only by a factor of 2 in HF2.

Evaluating Pilot-Scale Floating Wetland for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Using Canna indica and Phragmites australis as Plant Species

Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), also called constructed floating wetlands or floating islands, are a recent innovation in constructed wetlands (CWs) inspired by natural wetlands. In FTWs, emergent plants grown hydroponically on buoyant mats are used for wastewater treatment, which makes them far more economical than other CWs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of FTWs for the treatment of municipal wastewater from an urban drain using native plant species Canna indica and Phragmites australis. A pilot-scale experiment was carried out using four FTW treatment cells with different plant coverages for pollutant removal: C1 (Canna indica, 100% coverage), C2 (Phragmites australis, 100% coverage), C3 (Phragmites australis, 50% coverage), and C4 (control). Overall, treatment cells with Canna indica and Phragmites australis showed reductions in BOD5, COD, EC, TDS, NO3−, and PO43− compared with the control. Maximum BOD5 and COD removal was 53% and 50%, respectively, at 50% coverage of Phragmites australis (C3). The maximum reduction in NO3− (61%) was achieved using Canna indica at 100% coverage (C1). Conversely, moderate removal of PO43− (27%) was obtained in the control (C4) with a visibly high amount of algal growth, indicating the influence of algae on pollutant removal. This study highlights the significance of Phragmites australis for organic matter removal and Canna indica for nutrient removal, mainly NO3− from municipal wastewater. Furthermore, this study suggests that FTWs perform well for BOD5 and COD removal at 50% plant coverage (Phragmites australis) and NO3− removal at 100% coverage (Canna indica).

Thirty years of constructed wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment in the Czech Republic

Constructed wetlands (CWs) for wastewater treatment have been used in the Czech Republic since 1991. Nowadays, there are about 200 full-scale constructed wetlands for treatment of municipal sewage. Most CWS have been designed with horizontal subsurface flow, in the late 2010s and early 2020s, combination of vertical and horizontal flow or two-stage vertical flow CWs have been used. The average number of designed PE is 235 and the average surface area of the Czech CWs is 1132 m2. The average treatment efficiencies are 87.5% for BOD5, 78.5% for COD, 85.7% for TSS, 41.8% for N-NH4 and 41% for TP. The respective average outflow concentrations are (in mg l−1): 12.5, 48.5, 11.2, 16.6 and 3.35. The results from the oldest CWS in the Czech Republic revealed very consistent performance over the period of 30+ years with no refurbishment. The paper also provides information about two CWs which were refurbished after about twenty years of operation from horizontal subsurface flow to hybrid systems. In both CWs, the refurbishment was successful and the treatment efficiency increased.

Innovative Multistage Constructed Wetland for Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Reuse for Agriculture in Senegal

This paper reports on the performance of using a multistage constructed wetland (CW) to treat municipal raw wastewater and an analysis of its suitability for agricultural irrigation. The pilot plant consists of two stages of vertical flow CWs plus one stage of a horizontal CW built in 2018 with different local materials at the Gaston Berger University Campus, Saint Louis (Senegal). Each CW stage is composed of several filters with different type of media (silex, granite, or river gravel), filtering media depths, and macrophytes (Phragmites and Typha). The physicochemical and microbiological indicators were monitored over six months at each bed inlet and outlet to evaluate the efficiency and achievements of the Senegalese, European, and WHO regulations/recommendations for disposal or reuse in irrigation. This study demonstrates the viability of this new multistage CW design to treat raw municipal wastewater and produce an effluent of good quality suitable for reuse in agriculture. The removal of organic matter, suspended solids, and nutrients was very high (>95% for SS, BOD5 and N-NH4+, >90% for COD and P-PO43−), as was the reduction of microbiological indicators (fecal coliform reduction >5 log units and helminth egg removal of 100%). First, trends related to the influence of design (the type of gravel, filter depth, and type of macrophyte), operational modes, and the CW treatment efficiency were determined. The use of non-crushed gravel and Typha spp. seemed to provide better removal rates. On the contrary, no differences were found between the use of silex or granite gravel. For the studied Senegalese conditions under dry and hot climates, the preliminary results indicate that no resting periods are necessary for vertical flow CWs (VFCWs), thus resulting in a reduction in construction and operation costs. The main outcome of our study is evidence that multistage CWs can provide robust, cost-effective treatments, as well as allow for safe water reuse, which is imperative in areas with severe water scarcity and endemic microbiological waterborne diseases.

Changes of substrate microbial biomass and community composition in a constructed mangrove wetland for municipal wastewater treatment during 10-years operation

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been used for wastewater treatment for decades, but research on microorganisms involved, especially long-term changes, is still limited. In this study, we evaluated changes in the substrate microbial community in a pilot-scale horizontal subsurface-flow constructed mangrove wetland during 10-years operation. In the 3rd year of operation, microbial biomass carbon and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) reached peak values in two vegetated belts planted with Aegiceras corniculatum (Ac) and Kandelia obovata (Ko), respectively, then stabilized or declined in the 9th and 10th years of operation. PLFA profiles reflecting microbial community compositions varied significantly in the Ac belt during the operation period. Principal component (PCA) and redundancy analyses (RDA) revealed that microbial community compositions were significantly correlated with organic matter content, especially in the 9th and 10th years of operation, implying that the substrate microbial community in constructed mangrove wetland is sensitive to substrate characteristics and can be used as an indicator for long-term performance of CWs.

Treatment performance and macrophytes growth in a restored hybrid constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment

This work evaluated depuration performance and macrophyte plants growth in a full-scale hybrid-constructed wetland (H-CW) (1000 population equivalent) treating municipal wastewater. The plant was activated in June 2010 after a restoration of an existent H-CW composed of a horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) bed vegetated with evergreen xerophile species (Prunus laurocerasus, Pittosporum spp., Elaeagnus angustifolia), connected with a sedimentation pond vegetated with Lemna spp. To enhance the depuration performances, in both sections of the plant the original vegetation was removed and the HSSF bed was vegetated with Phragmites australis, whereas in the pond, a floating treatment wetland vegetated with Iris pseudacorus was installed. The depuration performance in treating total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate (PO4-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was weekly monitored between August 2010 and August 2011. Results indicated median concentration abatements for the entire system of 74.3% for TN, 62.1% for NH4-N, 77.7% for NO3-N, 29.6% for TP, 37.4% for PO4-P, and 46.7% for COD. In addition, at the end of the first growing season (June 2010–November 2010), good adaption to the system was detected for both P. australis and I. pseudacorus, which produced respectively 3.9±2.2kgm−2 and 3.7±1.0kgm−2 of above-ground dry biomass, with average above-ground N uptakes of 62.4±35.6gm−2 and 69.8±19.0gm−2 and average above-ground P uptakes of 4.6±2.6gm−2 and 7.8±2.1gm−2. The results indicate that a H-CW composed of a sequence of HSSF bed and FTW represents an effective application for abating TN, NH4-N, NO3-N and COD concentrations from municipal wastewater.

Life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions assessment and extended exergy accounting of a horizontal-flow constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment: A case study in Chile

The life-cycle greenhouse gaseous emissions and primary exergy resources consumption associated with a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF) were investigated. The subject of study was a wetland for municipal wastewater treatment with a 700-person-equivalent capacity. The effects of two types of emergent aquatic macrophytes (Phragmites australis and Schoenoplectus californicus) and seasonality on greenhouse gas (GHG) gas emissions, the environmental remediation cost (ERC) and the specific environmental remediation cost (SERC) were assessed. The results indicate that GHG emissions per capita (12–22kgCO2eq/p.e/yr) and primary exergy resources consumed (24–27MJ/m3) for the HSSF are lower than those of a conventional wastewater treatment plant (67.9kgCO2eq/p.e/yr and 96MJ/m3). The SERC varied between 176 and 216MJ/kg biological oxygen demand (BOD5) removal, which should be further reduced by 20% for an improved BOD5 removal efficiency above 90%. The low organic matter removal efficiency is associated with a high organic load and low bacterial development. Seasonality has a marked effect on the organic removal efficiency and the SERC, but the macrophyte species does not.

Physical–chemical characterization of sludge and granular materials from a vertical flow constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment

The use of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) is well developed in France and other countries for the treatment of wastewaters from small communities. The patented Azoé® process has been developed by a French company, SCIRPE, in order to improve denitrification and phosphorus removal as compared to classical VFCWs. It includes a biological trickling filter pretreatment followed by two stages of partially flooded VFCW. The performances of partially flooded VFCW are well demonstrated for the removal of organic matter and nitrogen. The system is now being considered for phosphorus removal as well. In this article, sludge and granular materials sampled from the filters of a municipal plant where the Azoé® system has been operated for 8 years were analyzed in order to provide data that may contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of phosphorus retention. Elemental analyses showed that phosphorus was predominantly captured in the sludge layer accumulated at the surface of the first stage. The progressive mineralization of the sludge over time was also clearly highlighted. The phosphate phases were mainly associated with iron and calcium. The transport of phosphorus via the migration of fine particles through the porous medium in the first stage was also observed.

Twelve-Year Performance of a Constructed Wetland for Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Water Quality Improvement, Metal Distribution in Wastewater, Sediments, and Vegetation

Constructed wetlands have been successfully used throughout the world for wastewater treatment. Nowadays, one of the most discussed questions is their long-term performance. The present study summarizes the performance of a constructed wetland designed to treat the municipal wastewater from a rural community in northwestern Spain during a period of 12 years. The monitoring of water quality for organic matter, suspended solids, nutrients, and indicator bacteria revealed that, in general, the effluent concentrations were significantly lower than influent concentrations. Moreover, differences among years were not statistically significant. Metals and metalloids were also monitored in wastewater, sediment, and vegetation. Results showed that these pollutants have mainly accumulated in the sediments, whereas only a minor fraction has been removed by plant uptake.

Improving the treatment efficiency of constructed wetlands with zeolite-containing filter sands

In this study the physical and chemical properties of three different lava sands used in constructed wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment were investigated. The aim was to identify those properties and mechanisms that render lava sands as highly efficient filter media which could substitute conventional, fluviatile sands. It was shown that although lava sands per se may be suitable filter materials, the presence of zeolite minerals within the lava sands enhances the purification efficiency tremendously. Zeolites not only increase the sorption capacity, but even more important, they are able to absorb water in large amounts, which in turn leads to stronger swelling. The latter reduces hydrological conductivity considerably, resulting in a longer contact time to eliminate pollutants. A simple mineralogical survey of filter materials for the presence of zeolites may render many installations of constructed wetlands successful.

Feasibility of using constructed treatment wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment in the Bogotá Savannah, Colombia

The main water bodies in the Bogotá Savannah have been seriously polluted due to the mismanagement of domestic, agricultural, and industrial wastewater. While there are a number of wastewater treatment facilities in the region, most do not function properly. There is a great need for inexpensive and sustainable wastewater treatment systems that are not technologically sophisticated and that do not require intensive management. The main goal of this study was to quantify the performance and sustainability of treatment wetlands and existing wastewater treatment systems in this region. Using data from the literature, a treatment wetland model was developed, which focused on pollutant removal. The modeled performance was compared to a system of waste stabilization ponds and a sequencing batch reactor. The three systems were subject to cost analysis and an emergy evaluation, leading to the assessment of indicators of cost-benefit for comparison. The economic analysis suggested that the net annual cost of the treatment wetland was US$ 14,672, compared to US$ 14,201 for the stabilization ponds and US$ 54,887 for the batch reactor. The emergy evaluations show that the ponds have the lowest annual emergy flow (6.65 + 16 sej/yr), followed by the constructed wetland (2.88E+17 sej/yr) and the batch reactor (8.86E+17 sej/yr). These results were combined to estimate treatment ratios (contaminants removed per lifetime cost, and contaminants removed per total emergy), cost ratios (cost per volume of water, annual cost per capita, and construction cost per capita), and emergy ratios (treatment yield, renewable emergy, lifetime emprice, construction emprice, non-renewable emergy, empower density, environmental loading, total emergy per volume of water, and emergy per capita).

Inhibition kinetics of salt-affected wetland for municipal wastewater treatment

A mathematical model was developed in order to describe the system behavior and performance of a constructed wetland (CW) treatment under salt-affected conditions. The rate of biodegradation of organic wastes was modeled using the first-order kinetics while the effect of salt concentrations was accounted by growth inhibition. Experimental data were used to determine model constants of the mathematical model. The experimental units were planted with cattail ( Typha angustifolia) and fed with spiked municipal wastewater. The hydraulic retention time varied from 12 to 120 h and wastewater conductivity was in the range of 4–32 mS/cm. At specified conditions the model was found to well describe the trend of the experimental data in terms of BOD removal with the Pearson correlation of 0.872. The model also permits construction of a nomograph which can be used to aid the design and prediction of CW treatment under salt-affected conditions.

Performance of a combined eco-system of ponds and constructed wetlands for wastewater reclamation and reuse

An on-site study on the operational performance of a combined eco-system of ponds and SF constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment and reclamation/reuse in Donging City, Shandong, China was carried out from January 2001 through October 2003. The removal efficiencies for various main parameters were: TSS 84.8 +/- 7.3%, BOD5 87.2 +/- 5.3%, CODCr 70.2 +/- 18.6%, TP 52.3 +/- 23.1%, and NH(3)-N 54.8 +/- 23.9% with effluent concentration of TSS 9.12 +/- 5.12 mg/l, BOD5 6.44 +/- 4.58 mg/l, CODCr, 42.8 +/- 6.7 mg/l, TP 0.94 +/- 0.27 mg/l and NH(3)-N 7.95 +/- 2.36 mg/l. In addition, the removal efficiencies for faecal coliforms and total bacteria were > 99.97% and > 99.998% respectively, which well meet Chinese National standards for effluent quality of municipal wastewater treatment plants. The composition of TSS was closely related to CODCr and BOD5 variations, and nitrification-denitrification is the major mechanism of nitrogen removal both in ponds and in wetlands. In addition, sedimentation also played an important role in the removal of TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus and BOD5. The removal efficiencies of various parameters, the number of species and biomass of biological community in the system increased gradually with the ecological maturation.

Potential use of mangrove plantation as constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment

The study evaluated the possibility of using mangrove plantation to treat municipal wastewater. Two types of pilot scale (100 x 150 m2) free water surface constructed wetland were set up. One system was a natural Avicennia marina dominated forest system. The other system was a newly planted system in which seedlings of Rhizophora spp., A. marina, Bruguiera cylindrica and Ceriops tagal were planted in 4 strips. Municipal wastewater was retained within the systems for 7 and 3 days, respectively. The results indicated that the average removal percentage of TSS, BOD, NO3-N, NH4-N, TN , PO4-P and TP in the newly planted system were 27.6-77.1, 43.9-53.9, 37.6-47.5, 81.1-85.9, 44.8-54.4, 24.7-76.8 and 22.6-65.3 respectively. Whereas the removal percentage of those parameters in the natural forest system were 17.1-65.9, 49.5-51.1, 44.0-60.9, 51.1-83.5, 43.4-50.4, 28.7-58.9 and 28.3-48.0, respectively. Generally, the removal percentages within the newly planted system and the natural forest system were not significantly different. However, when the removal percentages were compared with detention time, TSS, PO4-P and TP percentages removed were significantly higher in the 7-day detention time treatment. Even though the removal percentages were highly varied and temporally dependent, the overall results showed that mangrove plantation could be used as constructed wetland for municipal wastewater treatment in a similar way to the natural mangrove system.

Performances of constructed wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment in rural mountainous area

A global performance evaluation of an experimental Horizontal SubSurface Flow Constructed Wetlands (HSSF) was made after 6 years of functioning. This wetland is situated in French prealpine mountain, at 720 m elevation. The HSSF process treatment consists in a three-stage system dimensioned for 350 People Equivalent. Different helophytes were planted such as Typha latifolia, Phragmites australis and Scirpus maritimus. The mean hydraulic residence time for sewage was closed to 4–5 days, but in summer the mean pollutant residence time increases to 6 days due to an important evapotranspiration. There is no clogging of the gravel matrix and the hydraulic conductivity was very good and stabilized. Removal pollutant efficiency was determinate at each stages. There was a high removal of total suspended solids (TSS) all year around with an average of 95.6% (±3.6). More than 80% of removal occurred in the first stage. Physical processes (decantation, filtration) associated with biological oxidation were the principal factors of this removal. For COD and BOD5, removal efficiency in the first stage were close to 60% on average and more than 90% at the outlet of the wetland. These results are similar to those observed with SSFW in many cases. Influence of temperature seems very weak because there were no significant seasonal variations of the process efficiency. Minimum effluent quality standards (30 mg l−1 TSS; 120 mg l−1 COD; 40 mg l−1 BOD5) were always respected. In cold periods, nutrients uptake was reduced but remained up to 60% in average. Mean bacterial removal efficiency was about two order of magnitude (99%) but can reach up to five order of magnitude in summer. These cyclic variations follow a sinusoidal variation around an annual mean. Pollutants removals were correlated to their respective loadings and no limits has been observed except for nitrogen. These results confirm that SSFW, an ecotechnology, should be considered as an alternative to conventional treatment methods (activated sludge, fixed biofilm) for small communities even in mountainous area.

Potential for Greater Use of Wetlands for Waste Treatment in Northern Canada

The use of wetlands for low-cost and energy-efficient treatment of municipal wastewater is not a new process. In the Northwest Territories, Canada, wetlands have not been used much for wastewater treatment due to the lack of adequate design criteria. As a first step toward greater use, the current status of technology for using wetlands for wastewater treatment has been reviewed. The potential for use of wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment in the Northwest Territories is evaluated. At present, the design of wetland systems for municipal wastewater treatment is based on an empirical approach. There are only a few design models available, which have been tested with limited southern data. The critical design parameter for wetland systems is the hydraulic loading rate, while the organic loading rate is used as a check to ensure that aerobic conditions prevail in the wetland system.

Use of constructed wetlands in water pollution control: historical development, present status, and future perspectives

During the last two decades the multiple functions and values of wetlands have been recognized not only by the scientists and managers working with wetlands, but also by the public. The ability of wetlands to transform and store organic matter has been exploited in constructed wetlands. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art of the uses of constructed wetlands in water pollution control by reviewing the basics of the technology, the historical development, and the performance expectations with focus on the use of free water surface and subsurface flow constructed wetlands for municipal wastewater treatment. Performance data from a total of 104 subsurface flow systems and 70 free water surface flow systems are reviewed. The present state of knowledge is sufficient to apply constructed wetlands as a tool for improving water quality. The potential applications range from secondary treatment of municipal and various types of industrial wastewaters to polishing of tertiary treated waters and diffuse pollution. In many situations constructed wetlands is the only appropriate technology available. The treatment capacity of subsurface flow systems can be improved by selecting vertical flow systems with intermittent loading, by proper media selection, and by recycling of the wastewater. Further research is needed to help define and optimize engineering design criteria and the long-term performance capabilities and operational problems.
