Plant leaves as indoor air passive samplers for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) enter indoor environments through internal and external sources. Indoor air concentrations of VOCs vary greatly but are generally higher than outdoors. Plants have been promoted as indoor air purifiers for decades, but reports of their effectiveness differ. However, while air-purifying applications may be questionable, the waxy cuticle coating on leaves may provide a simple, cost-effective approach to sampling indoor air for VOCs. To investigate the potential use of plants as indoor air VOC samplers, a static headspace approach was used to examine the relationship between leaf and air concentrations, leaf lipid contents and octanol-air partition coefficients (Koa) for six VOCs and four plant species. The relationship between leaf and air concentrations was further examined in an actual residence after the introduction of several chlorinated VOC emission sources. Leaf-air concentration factors (LACFs), calculated from linear regressions of the laboratory headspace data, were found to increase as the solvent extractable leaf lipid content and Koa value of the VOC increased. In the studies conducted in the residence, leaf concentrations paralleled the changing air concentrations, indicating a relatively rapid air to leaf VOC exchange. Overall, the data from the laboratory and residential studies illustrate the potential for plant leaves to be used as cost effective, real-time indoor air VOC samplers.

On-Site Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analysis to Streamline Vapor Intrusion Investigations

Distinguishing between vapor intrusion and indoor sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a significant challenge in conventional vapor intrusion assessments. For this research project, the authors developed a step-by-step protocol to streamline building-specific investigations by using on-site gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis and building pressure manipulation to determine the source of VOCs in indoor air during a 1-day field investigation. Protocol validation included implementation in industrial buildings and testing alongside conventional methods. The new protocol compares favorably to conventional approaches, yielding more definitive results in less time. This article presents three case studies which illustrate application of the protocol.

Relationship between sources and patterns of VOCs in indoor air

People spend most of their daytime in indoor environments. Their activities influence the composition of the indoor air by emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The increasing number of different VOCs became the focus of attention in recent years as the question arises from the relationship between exposure to air pollutants and diseases. The present study of flats in Leipzig (Germany) is based on measurements of 60 different VOCs and is unique in the field of indoor air quality due to its enormous size of samples (n=2 242) and questionnaire data. The main purpose of our analysis was to identify the sources and patterns that characterize airborne VOCs in occupied flats. We combined two methods, principal components analysis (PCA) and non–negative matrix factorization (NMF), to assign compounds to their origin and to understand the coinstantaneous existence of several VOCs. PCA clustering provided a source apportionment and yielded 10 principal components (PCs) with an explained variance of 72%. However, real indoor air quality is often affected by combined sources. NMF reveals characteristic compositions of VOCs in indoor environments and emphasizes that constantly recurring structures are not single sources, but rather fusions of them, so called patterns. Interpreting these sources, we realized that homes were strongly influenced by ventilation, human activities, furnishings, natural processes (such as solar radiation) or their combinations. The very large set of samples and the combination with questionnaires applied on this comprehensive assessment of VOCs allows generalizing the results to homes in middle–scale cities with minor industrial pollution. As a conclusion, single VOC–dose–response relationships are inopportune for situations when indoor sources occur in combination. Further studies are necessary to assess associated health risks.

Lowering TVOC is necessary to prevent sick building syndrome

Background: Sick-building syndrome (SBS) is a range of symptoms such as eye irritation, sore throat, and headaches that occur when entering a newly constructed or remodelled building. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are suspected to be one of the major causes of SBS. Therefore, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan set the indoor air guideline values about 13 VOCs to prevent SBS. However, the number of the SBS patients has not decreased although the concentration levels of the 13 VOCs have become extremely low in recent years. Aims: The aim of this study is to examine the kind of VOCs and the concentration level of the total VOCs (TVOCs) in the current houses and buildings. Methods: Chemiless Town is a model town constructed under the concept of “Environmental Preventive Medicine” in the campus of Chiba University, Japan. In Chemiless Town, in which houses and buildings are constructed with as fewer chemicals as possible, eight Laboratory Houses (LHs) were set up for the purpose of researching the VOCs from building and interior materials. To find the causing chemicals of SBS, 81 VOCs in indoor air of the 29 rooms of the LHs were analyzed and calculated from April 2007 to December 2012.Results: The concentration levels of each VOC were extremely variable depending on the materials of the houses and the seasons. When TVOC concentration value was higher than 1,000?g/m3 or below 100?g/m3, 75% of the TVOCs was the 10 highest concentration levels of VOCs. Also, when TVOC concentration value was higher than 1,000?g/m3, 75% of the TVOCs was occupied by unregulated VOCs.Conclusion: It is important to lower the TVOCs to prevent SBS; however, it is difficult if only 13 regulated VOCs are analyzed. To lower the TVOCs, unregulated VOCs also should be analyzed and lowered.

VOC sorption and diffusion behavior of building materials

In this study 25 different building materials often used in timber constructions (wood based panels, gypsum boards, vapor barriers, adhesive tapes, insulation materials and sealants) were investigated with regard to their adsorption, desorption and diffusion behaviour towards volatile organic compounds (VOC). The materials were exposed to four, respectively five selected VOCs typically found in indoor air: hexanal, butyl acetate, p-xylene, nonane and α-pinene. Adsorption and desorption properties were investigated under static conditions, whereas the diffusion behavior was examined in a 0.225 m3 emission chamber with an air exchange rate of 1 h−1. The results of the experiments indicate that some building products have a high potential to reduce VOCs in indoor air. Apart from the vapor barriers, two insulating materials and one plasterboard, all tested materials represented an adsorption efficiency of about 50 % or higher related to the injected VOC standards. Materials with high adsorption capacity bound substances strongly and desorbed them less, whereas less adsorbing materials acted inversely. The obtained results indicate that material properties and processing play a considerable role in diffusion behavior of building materials.

Evaporative Gasoline Emissions and Asthma Symptoms

Attached garages are known to be associated with indoor air volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study looked at indoor exposure to VOCs presumably from evaporative emissions of gasoline. Alaskan gasoline contains 5% benzene making benzene a marker for gasoline exposure. A survey of randomly chosen houses with attached garages was done in Anchorage Alaska to determine the exposure and assess respiratory health. Householders were asked to complete a health survey for each person and a household survey. They monitored indoor air in their primary living space for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes for one week using passive organic vapor monitoring badges. Benzene levels in homes ranged from undetectable to 58 parts per billion. The median benzene level in 509 homes tested was 2.96 ppb. Elevated benzene levels in the home were strongly associated with small engines and gasoline stored in the garage. High concentrations of benzene in gasoline increase indoor air levels of benzene in residences with attached garages exposing people to benzene at levels above ATSDR’s minimal risk level. Residents reported more severe symptoms of asthma in the homes with high gasoline exposure (16%) where benzene levels exceeded the 9 ppb.

Detection of human effluents by a MOS gas sensor in correlation to VOC quantification by GC/MS

Due to increasing interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring for demand controlled ventilation (DCV) aiming at improved perceived air quality, health, energy and cost saving, the objective of this study has been the development of a sensor module based on a single microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor for IAQ monitoring as close as possible to the human sensory impression in indoor environments. Based on the results of a statistical evaluation on human induced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air of indoor environments correlating with human presence and perceived air quality, the performance of differently doped SnO 2 thick film gas sensor materials has been investigated in laboratory and by means of field tests in order to find the most promising sensor material for IAQ monitoring based on the detection of changes of human induced VOCs in indoor air. Implementation of an empirical evaluation algorithm reversing proportionality of anthropogenic CO 2 production and other bio-effluent generation allows prediction of CO 2 equivalent units. Analytical instrumentation and reference sensors served to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed sensor module in real-life.

Investigation of the Treatability of the Primary Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds on Activated Carbon Fiber Cloths at Typical Indoor Concentrations

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major concern for indoor air pollution because of the impacts on human health. In recent years, interest has increased in the development and design of activated carbon filters for removing VOCs from indoor air. Although extensive information is available on sources, concentrations, and types of indoor VOCs, there is little or no information on the performance of indoor air adsorption systems for removing low concentrations of primary VOCs. Filter designs need to consider various factors such as empty bed contact time, humidity effects, competitive adsorption, and feed concentration variations, whereas adsorption capacities of the indoor VOCs at the indoor concentration levels are important parameters for filter design. A preliminary assessment of the feasibility of using adsorption filters to remove low concentrations of primary VOCs can be performed. This work relates the information (including VOC classes in indoor air, the typical indoor concentrations, and the adsorption isotherms) with the design of a particular adsorbent/adsorbates system. As groundwork for filter design and development, this study selects the primary VOCs in indoor air of residences, schools, and offices in different geographical areas (North America, Europe, and Asia) on the basis of occurrence, concentrations, and health effects. Activated carbon fiber cloths (ACFCs) are chosen as the adsorbents of interest. It is demonstrated that the isotherm of a VOC (e.g., toluene on the ACFC) at typical indoor concentrations—parts per billion by volume (ppbv) level—is different than the isotherm at parts per million by volume (ppmv) levels reported in the publications. The isotherms at the typical indoor concentrations for the selected primary VOCs are estimated using the Dubinin–Radushkevitch equation. The maximum specific throughput for an indoor VOC removal system to remove benzene is calculated as a worst-case scenario. It is shown that VOC adsorption capacity is an important indicator of a filter’s lifetime and needs to be studied at the appropriate concentration range. Future work requires better understanding of the realistic VOC concentrations and isotherms in indoor environments to efficiently utilize adsorbents.

Indoor Air Pollution of Volatile Organic Compounds-Indoor/Outdoor Concentrations, Sources and Exposures-

In this review, we discussed about volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentrations, sources of VOC, exposures, and effects of VOC in indoor air on health in Japan. Because the ratios of indoor concentration (I) to outdoor concentration (O) (I/O ratios) were larger than 1 for nearly all compounds, it is clear that indoor contaminations occur in Japan. However, the concentrations of basic compounds such as formaldehyde and toluene were decreased by regulation of guideline indoor values. Moreover, when the sources of indoor contaminations were investigated, we found that the sources were strongly affected by to outdoor air pollutions such as automobile exhaust gas. Since people live different lifestyles, individual exposures have been investigated in several studies. Individual exposures strongly depended on indoor concentrations in houses. However, outdoor air pollution cannot be disregarded as the sources of VOC. As an example of the effect of VOC on health, it has been indicated that there is a possibility of exceeding a permissible cancer risk level owing to exposure to VOC over a lifetime.

This study was to assess the lifetime cancer and non-cancer risk of exposure of worker and user at public facilities in Korea to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We measured the concentrations of two aldehydes and five VOCs in indoor air at 424 public buildings that 8 kinds of public facilities (70 movie theaters, 86 offices, 86 restaurants, 70 academies, 22 auditoriums, 30 PC-rooms, 30 singing-rooms and 30 bars) all over the country. There were estimated the human exposure dose and risks with averages of the using-time and frequency for facility users and office workers, respectively. Carcinogens (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzene) were estimated the lifetime excess cancer risks (ECRs). non-carcinogens (toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene) were estimated the hazard quotients (HQs). The average ECRs of formaldehyde and benzene for facility worker and user were level, respectively, in all facilities. HQs of four non-carcinogens did not exceed 1.0 for all subjects in all facilities. The estimated ECRs for restaurant and auditorium were the highest, and the PC-room and bar were the next higher facilities. Furthermore, people in a smoking facility had the highest cancer risk. Higher ECRs of formaldehyde and benzene were observed in indoor smoking facilities such as restaurant and auditorium. Higher HQs of toluene and xylene were observed at the restaurant and office building.

Personal exposures to volatile organic compounds among outdoor and indoor workers in two Mexican cities

There are limited data on exposures to ambient air toxics experienced by inhabitants of urban areas in developing countries that have high levels of outdoor air pollution. In particular, little is known about exposures experienced by individuals working outdoors - typically as part of the informal sector of the economy - as compared to workers in office-type environments that approach the indoor air quality conditions of the more developed countries. The objective of this study is to explore these differences in personal exposures using a convenience sample of 68 outdoor and indoor workers living in Mexico City (higher outdoor air pollution) and Puebla (lower outdoor air pollution), Mexico. Occupational and non-occupational exposures to airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during a 2 day period, monitoring 2 consecutives occupational and non-occupational periods, using organic vapor monitors (OVMs). Socio-demographic and personal time-location-activity information were collected by means of questionnaires and activity logs. Outdoor workers experienced significantly higher exposures to most VOCs compared to indoor workers in each of these cities. The outdoor workers in Mexico City had the highest exposures both during- and off-work, with maximum occupational exposures for toluene, MTBE, n-pentane, and d-limonene exceeding 1 mg/m(3). The inter-city pattern of exposures between the outdoor workers is consistent with the higher outdoor air pollution levels in Mexico City, and is above exposures reported for urban areas of the more developed countries. Results from this study suggest that elevated outdoor air pollution concentrations have a larger impact on outdoor workers' personal exposures compared to the contribution from indoor pollution sources. This contrasts with the more dominant role of indoor air VOC contributions to personal exposures typically reported for urban populations of the more developed countries.

Indoor Air Quality of Public Places in Mumbai, India in Terms of Volatile Organic Compounds

Indoor air quality at nine locations viz. food courts, restaurant, bar, conference room, office and theater, which can be classified as public places have been monitored for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) content. Forty VOCs have been identified and one fourth of these are classified as Hazardous Air Pollutants. Levels of most VOCs are observed to be below the guideline values for public places and offices, as adopted by Hong Kong. Consumer goods are found to be predominant source of chlorinated VOCs in indoor air. Levels of benzene and carbon tetrachlorides were observed to be above the guideline values at all the locations. Effect of ozonisation on Total VOC concentrations have also been studied.

Volatile Organic Compounds in Human Milk: Methods and Measurements

The present study was conducted to optimize methods for measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by use of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and to provide a preliminary assessment of levels in human milk. MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether), chloroform, benzene, and toluene were measured from two sources of milk: a North Carolina milk bank (n = 5) and multiple samples from three women within nonsmoking households in inner-city Baltimore, MD (n = 8). In Baltimore, indoor air VOC concentrations in the respective households were also measured by active sampling and thermal desorption gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in selective ion monitoring (GC/MS/SIM) over each of the 3 days of milk collection. By application of these optimized methods, we observed median VOC concentrations in Baltimore human milk of 0.09, 0.55, 0.12, and 0.46 ng/mL for MTBE, chloroform, benzene, and toluene, respectively. For benzene, toluene, and MTBE, milk levels trended with observed indoor air concentrations. On the basis of measured concentrations in air and milk, infant average daily dose by inhalation exceeded ingestion rates by 25-135-fold. Thus, VOC exposure from breast milk is vastly exceeded by that from indoor air in nonsmoking households. Accordingly, strategies to mitigate infant VOC exposure should focus on the indoor air inhalation pathway of exposure.

Development of Competition Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Determination of Formaldehyde in Serum

Sick-building symptoms associated with indoor air volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde in new or newly remodeled houses, have been increasingly highlighted, and are known as sick house syndrome in Japan. We developed a competition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for measuring formaldehyde in serum. The specificity of the antiserum generated with formaldehyde-rabbit serum albumin conjugates and the application to the detection of formaldehyde in serum were evaluated. The antiserum selectively reacted with formaldehyde conjugated to rabbit, human, rat and bovine-serum albumins, but not with unconjugated albumins. The quantitative working range of formaldehyde-human serum albumin conjugates was from 0.5 to 500 ng/well.

Two Sensitive Sick-building Syndrome Patients Possibly Responding to p-Dichlorobenzene and 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol: Case Report

Sick-building syndrome (SBS) symptoms associated with indoor air volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in new or newly remodeled houses have been increasingly highlighted, and are known as “sick house syndrome” in Japan. In the course of the investigation of SBS patients, we found two sensitive patients who complained of severe symptoms and had elevated serum levels of p-dichlorobenzene and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol. One patient was a housewife, who complained of various symptoms such as headache, itching eyes, nasal irritation, and night sweats and had a high serum level of p-dichlorobenzene (25.4 ng/ml). She showed some improvement of symptoms in association with the gradual decrease in p-dichlorobenzene concentrations in both her bedroom and her serum. The other patient was a female professor who had experienced mainly respiratory symptoms, such as nonproductive cough, throat irritation, etc. when she entered her office, classrooms, and a faculty meeting room in a university building. Her serum 2-ethyl-1-hexanol concentration was 4.6 ng/ml, which was more than 7.7-fold higher than that in four other patients with other onsets. The elevation of her serum 2-ethyl-1-hexanol level was assumed to be due to daily exposure in the university building.

Development of a solid phase microextraction (SPME) method for the sampling of VOC traces in indoor air

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was studied for the measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air. An adsorptive PDMS/Carboxen fibre was used and an analytical methodology was developed in order to overcome competitive adsorption. Kinetics and adsorption isotherms were investigated for different sample volumes and model compounds. In order to evaluate competitive adsorption on the fibre, these compounds were studied alone and in mixture. From the results obtained, the operating conditions allowing co-adsorption of the target compounds were determined: the air sample is enclosed in a 250 mL glass bulb where the SPME fibre is exposed until adsorption equilibrium. This procedure was combined with GC/MS analysis for the identification and quantification of VOCs in indoor air. The performances were determined by using a standard gas containing 10 VOCs representative of indoor environments (acetaldehyde, acetone, BTX, alpha-pinene, trichloroethylene, alkanes). The detection limits were determined in single ion monitoring mode and for a signal to noise ratio of 3. Except acetaldehyde (6 microg m(-3)), they are all below 0.5 microg m(-3). Calibration curves are linear up to 10 micromol m(-3) for all the compounds with good correlation coefficients (above 0.99). The reproducibility ranges from 6 to 12% according to the compound. The methodology was then applied to the comparison of the VOCs content in classrooms of two different schools.

Spatial flow influence factor: A novel concept for indoor air pollutant control

This paper puts forward a novel concept, the spatial flow influence factor (SFIF), which provides a new insight into the airflow structure. This concept is very helpful in the control of indoor air pollutants since: (1) for a given indoor airflow and given sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the optimal arrangement of the VOC sources can easily be obtained; (2) for given positions of VOC sources and occupied regions (or target regions), the optimal indoor airflow pattern or organization can be determined; (3) the SFIF for an indoor space can also be regarded as the indoor air safety index of that space. To illustrate this concept, we present several examples of applying a SFIF to indoor air VOC control.

Novel insight into VOC removal performance of photocatalytic oxidation reactors

A general model has been developed for analyzing the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) reactors, taking into consideration of the photocatalytic (surface) reaction and the convective mass transfer coefficients including allowance for their spatial dependence. On this basis, a novel insight into VOC removal performance of PCO reactors is presented. The key parameter for evaluating PCO reactor VOC removal performance is the number of the mass transfer unit (NTU(m)), which is shown to be a simple linear product of three dimensionless parameters: the ratio of the reaction area to the cross-sectional area of the flow channel (A*), the Stanton number of mass transfer (St(m)), and the reaction effectiveness (eta). The A* represents the geometric and structural characteristic of a PCO reactor. The St(m) shows the synergistic degree of alignment between the fluid and mass flow fields, and reflects the convective mass transfer rate of the reactor. The eta, describes the relative intensity between the PCO reaction rate and the mass transfer rate. By using the relationship and the parameters, the influence of various factors on the VOC removal performance, the bottleneck for improving the performance and design of a PCO reactor can be determined. Three examples are used to illustrate the application of our proposed model. It is found that the VOC removal bottleneck is the reaction rate for honeycomb type reactor, while mass transfer rate for light-in-tube type reactor. With six fins the fractional conversion of a light-in-tube reactor increases about 70% relative to the one without any fins. Indoor air quality problem caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have annoyed people for many years. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) appears to be a promising technique for destroying VOCs in indoor air. With the model and the novel insight presented in this paper, the influence of various factors on the VOC removal performance can be determined. And the bottleneck for improving the performance of a PCO reactor can be easily identified. These are helpful for designing high performance PCO reactors and optimizing their operative performance.

Characterizing Polyurethane Foam as a Sink for or Source of Volatile Organic Compounds in Indoor Air

Polyurethane foam (PUF) is widely used in indoor consumer products. Despite strong potential interactions with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the effect of PUF on indoor concentrations of VOCs has not been examined. This study determines the behavior of PUF as a potential sink for or source of VOCs in indoor air. A flexible polyether-type foam and eight aromatic VOCs ranging in molecular weight from naphthalene to benzene were studied. Rapid determinations of PUF-air partition coefficient (\IK\N) and PUF-phase diffusion coefficient (\ID\N) were achieved using a dynamic microbalance procedure. A diffusion model was applied to interpret the experimental data. The PUF sample was assumed to conform to semi-infinite cylindrical geometry with solid-phase diffusion being the rate limiting step. The results indicate that sorption of VOCs by PUF is fully reversible. For the VOCs studied, \IK\N can be correlated with vapor pressure and \ID\N with molecular free surface area. Humidity appears to reduce the extent of sorption and slow the sorption kinetics. These findings should facilitate the prediction of the source/sink behavior of PUF and the related impact on VOC concentrations in the indoor environment.

An Empirical Analysis of the Groundwater-to-Indoor-Air Exposure Pathway: The Role of Background Concentrations in Indoor Air

To further our understanding of the groundwater-to-indoor-air exposure pathway, a database of 270 paired groundwater and indoor air measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from 31 sites has been compiled and analyzed. Using regression analyses, these data have been analyzed to (1) detect evidence of indoor air impacts from dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons or chlorinated solvents in underlying groundwater, (2) estimate the true attenuation factor for volatilization from groundwater to indoor air, and (3) assess the utility of popular groundwater-to-indoor-air transport models for evaluating this exposure pathway. Key findings include the following: (1) > 95% of the indoor air concentrations fall within or below the range of national background indoor air values; (2) there is no correlation between petroleum constituent concentrations measured in groundwater and the concentrations of these VOCs in indoor air of overlying structures; and (3) for chlorinated solvent cases, a correlation between groundwater and overlying indoor air is observed; however, the average true attenuation factor, after correcting for background, is approximately 6.9 × 10−5, well below the default 1 × 10−3 value used by USEPA Vapor Intrusion Guidance to determine groundwater screening levels.
