Cardgame Design Project-Based Learning for a Graphic Design Course

Project-based learning is an effective method for students’ learning design. For the “Graphic Design for Interactive Entertainment” elective course, the author uses project-based learning to teach UI and UX design to Universitas Pelita Harapan’s Visual Communication Design Department students. For the project, the author designed a game mechanic. The students of the course later designed visuals for the game. One game that resulted from this project was “Pro Pickpockets”, a game about a group of pickpockets competing to collect valuable prizes for the best pickpockets. This paper elaborates on the design case of Pro Pickpockets as a design project and project-based learning for students in learning UI and UX.

Artistic mathematical analysis of the influence of modern urban architecture and lighting on human visual information transmission

AIMS: In order to implement the relevant laws, regulations and technical policies of national urban planning and environmental protection, and meet people’s living and human health, since the 21st century, various countries have adopted various methods to improve the urban ecological environment in varying degrees. The influence of the environment on people is first through the human visual response to the brain, so that the human brain can respond quickly and affect their human health. However, human modernization has brought many serious adverse factors to mankind. We must attach great importance to it. METHODS: Using the methods of field investigation, mathematical analysis and observation, and using artistic mathematical methods from the perspective of visual communication, the effects of these factors were analyzed. RESULTS: The analysis results show that more than 80% of people believe that the stronger the artistry of urban environment, the better human health and the longer life span. Only 10% of people are indifferent to the artistry of urban environment. 10% thought it was OK to have a place to live. CONCLUSION: 85% of people require that the urban environment should first have artistic beauty. Human beings must consider the artistry of the urban environment as much as possible in the process of urban modernization. The stronger the artistry of the environment, the more beautiful the modern environment will be. With a beautiful environment, human beings will live longer and longer. Effective measures must be taken to avoid excessive confusion in the construction and layout of cities.

How to efficiently find what you want from massive data has become a hot topic. It is precisely because network information is developing so fast that so many data-oriented software systems and pages are used to manage so much network information. Aiming at problems such as insufficient information mining of visual communication websites in ASPNET and poor visual communication effects, a design scheme for integrating high-dimensional data into visual communication websites is proposed. Its working architecture includes high-dimensional data integration, multi-type visual integration, and visual support services. The main functions of the website include comprehensive management, charts, data sources, projects, systems, etc. We have conducted specific design and Implementation of high-dimensional information integration on the website, completed the design and Implementation of integration of high-dimensional data, integration of multiple visualization types, and integrated access to visualization-supported functions. Use a deep web crawler to search the visual site. It uses a search-based approach to filter URLs and crawl valuable web pages. Practice has proved that the intelligent distribution network management page implemented by the solution proposed in this article has good performance. The system shows good performance in visualization implementation and the ability to discover information. The system achieved sound and visual communication effects.

Visual Communication In Tourism Development (Study on Curug Cay Waterfall Tourism, Bukit Village, Semidang Lagan District, Central Bengkulu Regency)

This research aims to determine visual communication in tourism development in Bukit Village, Semidang Lagan District, Central Bengkulu Regency. Data collection techniques were carried out using interviews with research informants. The informant in this research was 1 informant, namely the social account manager for the Curug Cay waterfall. The data analysis technique uses qualitative descriptive analysis which consists of data reduction, presentation and conclusions. The research results show that visual communication in tourism development in Bukit Village, Semidang Lagan District, Central Bengkulu Regency is seen based on the Aesthetic Theory according to Dake (2015:98) which consists of Disambiguity and Meaning, Control of Direction, Tension, Unity and Realism. It can be seen that the visual communication carried out by Bukit Village in promoting the Curug Cay waterfall tourist attraction is through social media such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. In creating content, there are many things that must be considered, such as strategies for taking interesting pictures and videos so that they attract people's attention to visit the Curug Cay waterfall tourist spot.

Characteristics of pectens in diurnal and nocturnal birds and a new functional proposal relating to non-visual opsins.

The pecten is a fold-structured projection at the ocular fundus in bird eyes, showing morphological diversity between the diurnal and nocturnal species. However, its biological functions remain unclear. This study investigated the morphological and histological characteristics of pectens in wild birds. Additionally, the expression of non-visual opsin genes was studied in chicken pectens. These genes, identified in the chicken retina and brain, perceive light periodicity regardless of visual communication. Similar pleat numbers have been detected among bird taxa; however, pecten size ratios in the ocular fundus showed noticeable differences between diurnal and nocturnal birds. The pectens in nocturnal brown hawk owl show extremely poor vessel distribution and diameters compared with that of diurnal species. RT-PCR analysis confirmed the expression of Opn5L3, Opn4x, Rrh and Rgr genes. Insitu hybridization analysis revealed the distribution of Rgr-positive reactions in non-melanotic cells around the pecten vessels. This study suggests a novel hypothesis that pectens develop dominantly in diurnal birds as light acceptors and contribute to continuous visual function or the onset of periodic behaviour.

Pendampingan Pembuatan Iklan Layanan Masyarakat Di SMKN 1 Kopang

Assistance in making public service advertisements at the SMA/SMK and equivalent level aims to educate the community around Kopang sub-district, Central Lombok district. The methods used are classical and practical, strengthening the theory of visual communication design. This assistance was carried out first by lobbying the school so that this activity could be carried out for four days; After organizing the event, it was presented to the school. This assistance was permitted by the school. Mentoring activities start Monday 26-29 February 2024; In this activity, assistance was carried out by inviting local teachers to collaborate in assisting students in creating community service advertisements (PSAs). Students are provided with classical material and tips and tricks in designing. Next, the students tried to make designs with the themes of the dangers of drugs, early marriage and caring for the environment. Of these three themes, students choose one to work on. The work process is accompanied by local lecturers and teachers to get good results. After going through the design stage which was carried out for three days and on the fourth day the students were taught and accompanied to learn to print on A3 size paper. The implication of this assistance is that the school directs the graphic design material taught at school more, it is beneficial for everyone, especially the school environment, and the results can be displayed in each class.

The role of organizational culture and structure in implementing sustainability initiatives

AbstractTo address the multiple grand challenges facing humanity, there is an urgent need for businesses to become more sustainable. This study explores the implementation of sustainability initiatives through an interview‐based single case study of an organization in the food and beverage industry. Specifically, this study adopts a Natural‐Resource‐Based View of the firm to examine the role of organizational culture and structure in the implementation process. It argues that to successfully implement sustainability initiatives, a flexible structure and a green organizational culture grounded in a shared sustainability vision are essential. The findings reveal that, despite the in‐practice flat organizational structure of the case organization, there was limited knowledge of the organization's sustainability vision among organizational members across all organizational levels. This could be attributed to a lack of internal communication within the organization, which constitutes a barrier to the successful dissemination of green values throughout the organization's family‐like, inclusive, and diverse work environment. This study proposes a three‐part approach for practitioners attempting to implement sustainability initiatives: (1) enhance organizational awareness and communication of the sustainability vision; (2) cultivate a green organizational culture; and (3) advocate for a collaborative, inclusive and decentralized approach to fostering sustainability. This approach is vital not only for sustaining the organization's competitive advantage but also for achieving improved environmental and social outcomes.

In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the use of social media in Indonesia and the world. Vindes Media is a digital platform that seeks to provide informative and entertaining content, providing space for the young generation to empower their aspirations, collaborate with each other, and contribute to the creative, sports and arts industries. This research aims to provide insight into effective communication with audiences interested in the world of sports. This research uses qualitative methods by utilizing Harold D. Lasswell's communication theory which describes communication through the question "Who Says What in Which Channel to Whom with What Effect". The expected output of this research is to contribute to academic understanding regarding the effectiveness and impact of using Vindes Media social media in the context of visual communication in the field of sports. Vindes presents interesting visual communication content so that many audiences are engaged and loyal. The conclusion of this research is that Vindes in its social media provides a means of visual communication for the Vindes Sport campaign through various types of visual communication, especially infographics, photography and visual videos. The visual communication content presented was also very interesting and in accordance with the event theme. The implication of this research is that Vindes' frequency of posting visual communication content is also quite large, around four posts every day. So, these few factors lead to great engagement and interaction with the audience

Making tacit knowledge explicit: the case for online peer feedback in the studio critique

AbstractDesign education traditionally centers around the critique as a pivotal assessment process, fostering the development of both explicit and tacit knowledge within the physical studio environment. Ideally, the critique encourages students to develop their creativity, sharpen their thought processes and refine their technique. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on technology-enhanced teaching in practice-based design studios by examining the effectiveness of online peer critique as a strategy to capture tacit knowledge and make it explicit in the design learning environment. Drawing on the experiences of 90 undergraduate visual communication design students, findings show the critique process was a collaborative experience which afforded the fluid exchange of both tacit and explicit knowledge. Technology played a key role in this knowledge exchange, giving students a confidence in their creative abilities as observers and participants. The online process facilitated anonymity, enabling open and honest communication, while digital records supported post-critique reflection. Despite challenges, this systematic approach to online peer critique proves beneficial in fully online courses and warrants exploration in physical design studios given that more programs transitioning to blended learning. This research contributes to the discourse on leveraging technology for tacit knowledge construction and learning in design education.

Design of Picture Book "Petualangan Onding" Containing Bugis Values for Early Childhood Character Education

The rise of moral degradation caused by the waning of knowledge and application of human values ​​contained in Bugis culture (Sipakatau, Sipakakainge’, Sipakalebbi) continues to increase. Seeing this condition, the design of picture storybooks as a medium for visual communication and introduction of cultural values ​​as educational materials were carried out with characters and increasing segmented visual literacy for early children. The title of the picture storybook is "Petualangan Onding". Contains 14 pages and tells the story of a Bugis child named Onding and a monkey endemic to South Sulawesi named Upe who invites readers on an adventure to get to know the three ancestral values ​​of the Bugis tribe: Sipakatau, Sipakainge', and Sipakalebbi. The work creation method is carried out in stages from data collection to the execution process. Data was collected by obtaining primary data from people closely related to the book "Petualangan Onding", and then secondary data from literature studies. The book design process uses visual elements such as colors with a refreshing color mood, typography from the font named “Amalia”, and the concept of flat design illustrations. These elements are mixed in such a way as to create a culture-based visual communication medium for early childhood learning and character education.

Motion Graphics in Visual Communication: Unveiling Creative Strategies in Contemporary Digital Design

This research delves into the transformative role of motion graphics within the realm of visual communication, underscoring its evolution from traditional to contemporary digital design. Rather than merely talking about historical developments, technological advancements, and present practices, the study delineates how motion graphics apply narrative and introduces interactive elements, which in the end lead to greater relevant communication in most digital media types. Taking a diverse methodological approach, it combines historical research and case studies to illustrate the interaction between art and technology, showcases the potential of motion graphics as a source of graphic narration that is both emotive and informative. The results show that it is more needed than ever before for motion graphics creation to take innovations and developments into account along with the creative strategies to achieve widespread experiences. This is the goal of the study bringing to the conversation about digital designs, the argument that motion graphics are the border of visual communications in the world today, while trying to forecast the future trends to get an application multidisciplinary.

The utility and reliability of the PreViAs questionnaire forthe assessment of vision in Turkish neonates and infants.

Introduction: Evaluating the visual functions of children with an easy-to-use and evidence-based method during the preverbal period will enable early diagnosis and intervention of visual impairments. The aim of this study is to determine the utility and reliability of the Turkish version of the Preverbal Visual Assessment (PreViAs) questionnaire, which was developed to evaluate the visual functioning of preverbal infants. Population and Methods: The PreViAs questionnaire was administered to primary caregivers of term infants under 24 months of age, and their responses were recorded. Results: Data from the 278 participating infants were analyzed to assess the internal consistency of the PreViAs questionnaire. Results showed a high level of consistency with Cronbach's alpha value of 0.958 for the total score, suggesting strong internal coherence. In addition, the Cronbach's alpha values for each domain were 0.890, 0.913, 0.951, and 0.922 for visual attention, visual communication, visual processing, and visual-motor coordination, respectively, indicating good internal consistency for each subdomain. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the PreViAs questionnaire is useful and reliable for assessing functional vision during the preverbal period.

The Authenticity of Organizational-Level Visual Identity in the Context of Strategic Communication

ABSTRACT With the purpose of addressing authenticity as a central concept for organizational-level visual identity, the paper contributes to growing scholarly interest in the role of symbols and images in the context of strategic communication. The paper theoretically and empirically explores conceptualizations and assumptions related to visual identity authenticity. Theoretically, it demonstrates how the dominant approach to authenticity rests on three interrelated assumptions: that a real organizational identity essence exists; that it can and should be aligned with a corresponding visual identity; and that such visual identity can transmit the essence as part of strategic communication. However, additional approaches to authenticity challenge and nuance the essentialist approach by operating with alternative, processual assumptions related to the nature of organizational identity, visual identity, and strategic communication. Empirically, the paper develops the identified theoretical approaches though practitioner insights. In particular, the empirical work consists of interviews with ten agency strategists focused on how they understand visual identity authenticity. Combined, the theoretical and empirical work offer a complex perspective on organizational-level visual identity authenticity, which goes beyond the essentialist approach by adding dynamic, aspirational, and consumer-driven approaches. These different approaches, in turn, have distinctive implications for visual strategic communication.

ОБРАЗ КРАСНОГО ВСАДНИКА В СОВЕТСКОМ АГИТАЦИОННОМ ИСКУССТВЕ. ИСТОКИ И ТРАНСФОРМАЦИИ

The image of the Red Horseman on a winged horse, which appeared in propaganda art in the first post-revolutionary years has absorbed deep cultural connotations: destruction of the old world, creation of the new, fight against evil and righteous judgment. The most striking examples of this image include: the propaganda plate of Alisa Golenkina “Red Genius” (State Porcelain Factory), the lithograph poster by Vladimir Fidman “The Second Anniversary of the Red Army” (Political Administration Department of the RMSR) and the poster by an unknown artist “Literacy is the way to communism” (Gosizdat), executed in 1920. These images reveal thematic, figurative and compositional similarities. The article describes the possible origins of these images and explores the semantics of propaganda visual communication. Furthermore, it examines the influence of iconographic images on the artistic practices of the post-revolutionary years. It is concluded that the artists of propaganda art turned to the iconography of the ancient sacred image of the Archangel Michael and created new heroes of the revolutionary era on its basis.
