COLLABORATION ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY TRAINING THROUGH VISITING MALAYSIAN PROFESSORS FOR LECTURERS IN INDONESIA

Improving the quality of research and development in the manufacturing industry is the main focus in the community service entitled "Collaborative Research Methodology Training Through Visiting Professor Malaysia for Lecturers in Indonesia". The initiation of this collaboration was carried out by the Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta, Pancasakti University Tegal, and STT Warga as a response to concerns about the quality of research by lecturers and students in Indonesia. Through research carried out by lecturers and students, whether in final assignments, theses, theses or dissertations, it is hoped that there will be increased academic activity and a deeper understanding of current developments in the manufacturing industry. In order to achieve this goal, this program involves visiting professors from Malaysia to provide research methodology training to lecturers in Indonesia. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that synergy will be created between the visiting professor's experience and knowledge and the local Indonesian context. It is hoped that this training will be able to improve the quality of research carried out by lecturers, so that it can make a positive contribution to the development of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia. Thus, this collaboration is a strategic step in improving academic quality and research contribution to the development of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia.

Implementing a Palliative Care Junior Faculty Visiting Professor Program: Pearls and Pitfalls.

Palliative Care (PC) is a small, relatively young interprofessional sub-specialty; hence mentorship for early-career research faculty is widely dispersed across schools and universities. We developed the Junior Visiting Professor Program (JVPP) to provide junior faculty in palliative care (PC) with opportunities to meet multidisciplinary PC researchers from other institutions and to advance their research through networking and presenting their work. We describe how we designed and implemented the program, and we report on the first cohort of participants. We invited PC research groups from US schools of medicine and nursing to participate in this 5-year interprofessional exchange program by nominating junior faculty and serving as hosts. We matched nominees to host institutions based on nominee training experiences, nominee research interests, and host institution faculty expertise. In addition, we provided logistical guidance on visit planning. Post-visit, we surveyed both hosts and junior visiting professors (JVPs) regarding their satisfaction, perceived value, and suggestions regarding the program. We recruited 13 schools to participate and matched 10 nominees to host institutions in our first year. Nine JVPs completed their visit; 6 JVPs and 8 host faculty/staff responded to the post-visit survey. Overall, JVPs were highly satisfied with their matches and the visiting professor experience. Hosts were generally satisfied with their matches and believed the program to be mutually beneficial. The most frequent suggestion was for greater administrative support to plan visits. Structured, well-supported opportunities for networking across institutions is beneficial for emerging PC researchers and for building PC research capacity.

The role of museum learning in promoting sustainability - Comparative research in Baranya County and Landkreis Görlitz

The study explores aspects related to the role of museums in promoting sustainability among the results of a comprehensive research entitled „The role of museum learning in strengthening resilience in peripheral regions – Comparative research in Görlitz District and Baranya County” conducted with the support of the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism's Saxon Visiting Professors Program 2022. Among the many aspects of the role of museums in promoting resilience, the empirical research also dealt with how much and in what way the museums/heritage sites in the two investigated areas contribute to the promotion of sustainability through their exhibitions, programs and other initiatives. Within the framework of the comparative research, based on a stratified sampling procedure, structured interviews were conducted with museum educators, museum directors, and relevant senior colleagues of 13 Baranya County and 13 Görlitz District museums/heritage sites between October 2022 and January 2023. The study compares the activities of the museums included in the research from the two regions in terms of the extent to which they promote the realization of the following seven of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s Agenda 2030: health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, reducing inequalities, responsible consumption and production, action against climate change, sustainable cities and communities.

Primer for Experimental Methods in Organization Theory

Experiments have long played a crucial role in various scientific disciplines and have been gaining ground in organization theory, where they add unique value by establishing causality and uncovering theoretical mechanisms. This essay provides an overview of the merits and procedures of the experimental methodology, with an emphasis on its application to organization theory. Drawing on the historical roots of experiments and their impact across science, we argue the method holds immense potential for furthering organization theory. We highlight key advantages of experimental methods, including high internal and construct validity, vividness in communicating findings, the capacity to examine complex and understudied phenomena, and the identification of microfoundations and theoretical mechanisms. We alleviate some concerns about external validity and offer guidance for designing and conducting sound, reproducible experimental research. Ultimately, we contend that the current experimental turn holds the potential to reorient organization theory. Visiting professor program for environmental science: Does it contribute to student learning experience and problem-solving skills?

This study reveals the contribution of student learning experiences and problem-solving skills in the Visiting Professor (VP) program. This research includes the type of ex post facto correlational research. The data collected in this study were learning experiences and problem-solving skills. Data collection techniques used a questionnaire to find out students' learning experiences on environmental change material, written essay tests to determine the ability to solve environmental pollution problems, and interviews with students on environmental change material. The results of this study found that the VP program had a relationship with and contributed to students' learning experiences and problem solving. The experience of the learning model in this VP gives the greatest contribution to problem-solving skills, followed by indicators of learning models based on student perceptions with percentages, indicators of learning resources with percentages, indicators of direct experience with percentages, indicators of substitute experience with percentages, and the last indicator that has a contribution the smallest is the indicator of student interaction with the percentage. The VP program should be carried out every semester in environmental science courses so that students get learning experience and problem solving. The next research that will be carried out is to look for other factors that influence and contribute to the VP program.

Lessons for Child Protection Moving Forward: How to Keep From Rearranging the Deck Chairs on the Titanic

The Gary B. Melton Visiting Professorship was created to honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Melton and to encourage scholars and advocates to continue to build on his impressive body of interdisciplinary work on children’s rights, global approach to child health and well-being, and social frameworks of family and community. A collaboration of the Haruv Institute and the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Colorado, the Melton Lecture was designed to be interdisciplinary, with the inaugural professorship and lecture given by a pediatrician and an anthropologist. This set of award recipients encompassed Gary Melton’s concerns from the individual and family to the larger context of culture and community. In this inaugural Melton Lecture, we take as our starting point Gary Melton’s quote, “Child abuse is wrong….” On this, we all can agree. Agreement lessens in response to the second part of the quote, “…the nation’s lack of an effective response to it is also wrong….” Indeed, the field continues to grapple with long-standing issues on how to ensure an effective response to child abuse. We use this lecture to consider how to move toward an effective response without simply rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship.

Founded in 1948, the Section on Allergy and Immunology is dedicated to ensure that children receive the highest quality of allergy and immunology care. Ulf Diederichsen (1963–2021)

“For he was our own! … Fruitful both in counsel and deed; this we experienced and appreciated.” With the death of Ulf Diederichsen on November 11, 2021, after a short but severe illness, we lost a great scientist in chemical biology and good friend. He was a generous and extremely gifted man whose strength was to tackle essential biological problems at a molecular level with simple model systems and to draw insightful conclusions realizing a hallmark of chemical biology by addressing biological challenges with chemical approaches derived from simple principles. Ulf Diederichsen was born on October 7, 1963, in Munich and grew up in Göttingen, enjoying excellent scholar education at the Max-Planck Gymnasium. He moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1983 to study Chemistry at the Albert-Ludwigs-University. For his doctorate he moved to Zurich in 1988 to work with Prof. Eschenmoser at the ETH on the question why Nature chose pentose—but not hexose nucleic acids. He received the Dr. rer. nat. in 1993 on the Base pairing of hypoxanthine in HOMO DNA oligonucleotides and the question of the pairing behavior of glucopyranosyl oligonucleotides. He then joined the group of Prof. Dennis P. Curran at the University of Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh/USA) as postdoctoral researcher (1993–1994) investigating radical chemistry. Back to Europe he started his habilitation on “Linear nucleic acid analogues with peptidic backbones” under the mentorship of Prof. Horst Kessler at the Technical University of Munich, which was finished in 1999. He then joined the University of Würzburg as Professor of Organic Chemistry, and finally, in 2001, the University of Göttingen. He served as Dean (2005 to 2007) and Vice President for Research (2015 to 2021). In addition, he was Guest Professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (1998–1999) and Goering Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin, USA (2000). He was elected member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen in 2012 and became its president in 2020. His scientific interest was mainly centered on the non-covalent interaction of peptide helices with respect to the incorporation, organization, and dynamics in lipid membranes. He successfully employed spin-labeled peptides for distance measurements. Similarly, he addressed the membrane attachment and fusion processes of SNARE proteins with model systems (conjugates of transmembrane peptides with coiled coil peptides or peptide nucleic acids). He was interested in functionalized β-peptides as artificial matrices for aggregation and modification of model membranes. The excellent results of this outstanding research were summarized in largely over 100 publications in highly renowned international journals. Besides his exceptional scientific achievements and admirable mentorship for a large number of doctoral students and postdocs, he deserves high recognition for his excellent research management particularly as Vice President of the University of Göttingen. He also served as a highly esteemed reviewer in various panels, including the German Research Foundation. The large experience collected in this important activity, particularly also for the German peptide community, he adapted in a very successful manner also in his editorial engagement as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Peptide Science since 2012, where he was supposed to take over the full responsibility as the Editor-in-Chief from 2022. Those of us who knew him are saddened by his sudden passing away and mourn the great loss of a dear friend and colleague. He will always be remembered as an inspiring teacher and mentor, as an enthusiastic scientist, but first and foremost as a warm and sincere human being, as a “feiner Kerl.”

A “Bit of A Politician” on A “Tough Assignment”: Robert Birley’s Visiting Professorship at the University of Witwatersrand, 1964 – 1967

ABSTRACT In January 1964, the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, appointed Robert Birley, former headmaster of Eton College, as a visiting professor. This analysis examines how Birley used this role, and his relatively secure position as a high-profile British figure, to speak out against the apartheid state. His professorship took place during a time of strained Anglo-South African relations; having become a republic and left the Commonwealth in 1961, South Africa appeared to be slipping ever further from the ‘British world’. To combat this course, London attempted to use cultural diplomacy, particularly in the form of academic and educational exchanges, to imbue future leaders with a more positive view of Britain. This analysis demonstrates that whilst Birley’s professorship was independent from this policy, he was in regular contact with British officials, and his actions correlated with their aims.

In this interview, Professor Randy L Jirtle speaks with Storm Johnson, Commissioning Editor for Epigenomics, on his work on genomic imprinting, environmental epigenomics and the fetal origins of disease susceptibility. Professor Randy Jirtle joined the Duke University Department of Radiology in 1977 and headed the Epigenetics and Imprinting Laboratory until 2012. He is now Professor of Epigenetics in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA. Jirtle's research interests are in epigenetics, genomic imprinting and the fetal origins of disease susceptibility. He is known for his groundbreaking studies linking environmental exposures early in life to the development of adult diseases through changes in the epigenome and for determining the evolutionary origin of genomic imprinting in mammals. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles as well as the booksLiver Regeneration andCarcinogenesis: Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms, Environmental Epigenomics in Health and Disease: Epigenetics and Disease Origins andEnvironmental Epigenomics in Health andDisease: Epigenetics and Complex Diseases. He was honored in 2006 with the Distinguished Achievement Award from the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2007, he was a featured scientist on the NOVA television program on epigenetics titled 'Ghost in Your Genes' and was nominated for Time Magazine's 'Person of the Year'. He was the inaugural recipient of the Epigenetic Medicine Award in 2008 and received the STARS Lecture Award in Nutrition and Cancer from the National Cancer Institute in 2009. Jirtle was presented the Linus Pauling Award from the Institute of Functional Medicine in 2014. In 2017, ShortCutsTV produced the English documentary 'Are You What Your Mother Ate? The Agouti Mouse Study' based on his pioneering epigenetic research. He received the 2018 Northern Communities Health Foundation Visiting Professorship Award at the University of Adelaide, Australia. The Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute presented Jirtle with the Research and Innovation Leadership Award in 2019. Dr Jirtle was also given the Alexander Hollaender Award in 2019 at the 50th annual meeting of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society.

National Virtual Visiting Professorship in Breast Imaging.

Originally established to disseminate information about medical progress and innovation [1], the educational value of the visiting professorship has come into question with ready availability of “ahead of print” medical journal publications and other high-quality online educational resources. Increasing clinical workloads and other demands on physicians’ time and the financial resources needed to host a visiting professor have resulted in a decrease in popularity of these programs [2,3]. A 2018 survey of academic radiology programs demonstrated only a handful of visiting radiology professors are invited per year at institutions that continue this tradition [3].

Professor Chaitanya Mishra teaches Sociology to MPhil/PhD students at Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal. His research focuses on macrosociology, politics, social change, and social stratification. He is an author/co-author, and co-editor of 10 books and about 250 articles. He believes that all sciences should contribute to public education, and frequently contributes to public debates through the media. He started his career in 1978 as a researcher at the Institute of Nepal and Asian Studies, TU. In 1981, he was appointed the founder Chair of the Central Department of Sociology/Anthropology, TU. He has written on the development of sociological knowledge in Nepal, its disciplinary growth, empirical and theoretical orientations, as well as strategies that could be adopted to meet contemporary disciplinary challenges. His contributions have led to theoretical debates on the issues of development or underdevelopment of Nepali society as well as the nature and causes of economic and political divisions and alternative trajectory of change. Professor Mishra served as a member of Nepal’s National Planning Commission (1994-95), founding president of Nepal Sociological Association (2017-18), Fulbright Visiting Professor and Hubert Humphrey Professor of Sociology at Macalester College (2015-16), and founding Executive Chair of the Policy Research Institute (2018-19) of the Government of Nepal.

The Radiology Lecture Exchange (RALEX): A Virtual Visiting Professorship Platform for All

Visiting Professorships (VPs) have significant benefits for both the guest lecturer and host institution. Such opportunities increase knowledge dissemination, research collaboration, opportunities for junior faculty members, and educational material that shores up perceived weaknesses in the host institution's training program. While VPs provide these benefits, such invitations are often costly due to travel and accommodation expenses, which can be challenging for host institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic - with the forced social and work distancing - has mandated that radiologists rethink how they interact and collaborate within their department and also within the larger medical and radiology communities. Virtual platforms have become critical for communication and education, and in this altered academic environment have provided an opportunity for us to redesign how VPs are designed. The virtual VP removes many of the cost and time burdens associated with travel and even enables greater communication where it might not have been economically or time-feasible. We present a virtual Microsoft Teams (Redmond, WA) based platform for facilitating VPs in all subspecialties and for all ranks called the Radiology Lecture Exchange.

 Mozambique has long been considered a political success story in Africa. Nevertheless, it was clear from the signing of the General Peace Agreement in 1992 and the first general elections in 1994 that the official narrative of this success hid severe problems. The major challenge for Mozambican democracy has been the management of the electoral process. With little transparency and not much evidence of legal process, the consequence has been the repeated resurgence of political tensions and military clashes between Renamo and the Frelimo-led national Government. This paper seeks to explore the relationship between ‘negative peace’ and the lack of transparency in Mozambican electoral processes, whose main consequence is an ‘endless transition’ towards a ‘normal’ model of democracy.
