Application of vertical seismic profile multi-component data to tight sandstone gas reservoirs

Abstract Given the complex geological characteristics of the tight gas sandstone in the Shaximiao Formation of the Jurassic in the central Sichuan Basin, including its wide distribution, narrow width, and thin thickness, conventional surface seismic methods face significant challenges in reservoir delineation. To address this challenge, a vertical seismic profile (VSP) survey was conducted in the region in 2022, along with the simultaneous collection of 3D3C surface seismic data. This article mainly elaborates on a case study of using multi-component VSP technology to delineate tight sandstone gas reservoirs. By comparing the processed VSP imaging volume with the surface seismic imaging volume, it was discovered that the frequency width of the VSP image was 8 to 12 Hz higher than that of the surface seismic image. Utilizing the multi-component information in VSP data, it is feasible to more precisely delineate tight gas sandstones, thereby reducing the uncertainty of data interpretation. Based on the conventional data interpretation of these images, an innovative application suggests using the centroid frequency ratio of PSv to PP waves as an indicator for tight sandstone. The results show that this attribute has high sensitivity to this type of reservoir. Combining geological, drilling, and logging data, an interpretation template was established based on VSP data to interpret 3D3C surface seismic data and propose new drilling well locations. The conclusion is that the successful application of VSP technology cannot be achieved without the integration of multiple disciplines. The combined exploration technology of multi-component VSP and 3D3C surface seismic has been demonstrated to have high application value through practical application, significantly improving the success rate of gas wells and providing effective support for the exploration and development of tight sandstone gas reservoirs.

3D VSP Imaging Using DAS Recording of P- and S-Waves in Vertical and Lateral Well Sections in West Texas.

A 3D vertical seismic profiling (VSP) survey was acquired using a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system in the Permian Basin, West Texas. In total, 682 shot points from a pair of vibroseis units were recorded using optical fibers installed in a 9000 ft (2743 m) vertical part and 5000 ft (1524 m) horizontal reach of a well. Transmitted and reflected P, S, and converted waves were evident in the DAS data. From first-break P and S arrivals, we found average P-wave velocities of approximately 14,000 ft/s (4570 m/s) and S-wave velocities of 8800 ft/s (3000 m/s) in the deep section. We modified the conventional geophone VSP processing workflow and produced P-P reflection and P-S volumes derived from the well's vertical section. The Wolfcamp formation can be seen in two 3D volumes (P-P and P-S) from the vertical section of the well. They cover an area of 3000 ft (914 m) in the north-south direction and 1500 ft (460 m) in the west-east direction. Time slices showed coherent reflections, especially at 1.7 s (~11,000 ft), which was interpreted as the bottom of the Wolfcamp formation. Vp/Vs values from 2300 ft (701 m) -8800 ft (2682 m) interval range were between 1.7 and 2.0. These first data provide baseline images to compare to follow-up surveys after hydraulic fracturing as well as potential usefulness in extracting elastic properties and providing further indications of fractured volumes.

Development of a subsea distributed acoustic sensing acquisition system

Over the past few decades, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data acquisition has seen great improvements from better interrogators, engineered fiber, and lessons learned from subsea installation and acquisition. This has given us confidence that DAS cables can be installed in wells with subsea trees to be used as receivers for vertical seismic profile (VSP) seismic imaging. VSP imaging for deepwater fields has been demonstrated to provide better illumination and higher-frequency seismic data. Permanent DAS cable installation can be used to acquire highly repeatable time-lapse (4D) data. DAS cables have been installed in a number of subsea wells on two deepwater oil fields with the intention of covering the crest of these fields with high-frequency seismic data. A system has been developed to allow for DAS acquisition on these offshore subsea wells with long-distance tie backs using permanently installed interrogators on the floating platforms and engineered fiber in the wells. On each of these fields, a DAS cable has now been installed, and subsequently, a zero offset (ZO) DAS VSP has been acquired for verification and commissioning. These ZO DAS VSP acquisitions indicate high-fidelity installations resulting in DAS VSP data with excellent data quality. These first subsea DAS acquisitions indicate great promise, and further installations and acquisitions are planned with the ultimate goal of providing high-frequency seismic images over the crest of these fields to reduce the uncertainty in decisions around reservoir management and future infill drilling.

Denoising and wavefield separation method for DAS VSP via deep learning

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) vertical seismic profiling (VSP) is, a new combined method of borehole seismic exploration, that has the advantages of low cost, high resistance to temperature and pressure, and high sampling rate. However, the collected data generally suffer from high noise, detracting from the potential high-precision imaging benefits and limiting the full application of the technique. The quality of wavefield separation is also crucial to VSP processing. To mitigate the various problems, a regularized residual channel attention network (RRCAN) is proposed for improved denoising and wavefield separation. Based on two prediction tasks, the networks are built (i.e., RRCAN_1 and RRCAN_2) by adding a regularization term to the loss function. To reduce the loss of effective signals during the denoising process, a wavefield separation method that includes secondary effective information extraction is adopted. The final separation results reflect the denoised and removed noise data, a total of 500 geological models are constructed using a random method and RRCAN_1 is trained with synthetic and field noise data. The conventional plane-wave destruction method is improved by using velocity information, and high-precision separation results for upgoing and downgoing waves are obtained for RRCAN_2 training. The test results obtained for the synthetic and field data show that the proposed network effectively suppresses DAS VSP noise while yielding excellent separation results for downgoing and upgoing waves. Therefore, denoising and wavefield separation methods based on RRCAN provide effective high-precision DAS VSP imaging.

Fractured basement imaging using random-space-shift reverse time migration: A vertical seismic profile survey in the Bohai Bay Basin, China

Fractured basements are not only potential reservoirs for hydrocarbon resources, but they also provide significant storage space for carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text]) sequestration and radioactive waste disposal. However, fractured basements are challenging for seismic imaging methods due to the complexities in their fault and fracture networks, strong heterogeneity, highly variable structural dip, and strong impedance contrasts between the basement rocks and the surrounding sediments. We present a field case in which a walkaway vertical seismic profiling (VSP) survey was conducted at a fractured basement play located in the Bohai Bay Basin, China, to improve the resolution compared with a preexisting surface seismic profile. Using the advanced random-space-shift (RSS) reverse time migration (RTM), we obtain a high-resolution image with a clear delineation of the highly faulted dipping basement. From numerical and field examples, we find that the application of the RSS-RTM improves the final image by mitigating unavoidable errors in the migration velocity model, which would otherwise result in an unfocused image using the conventional RTM approach. In addition, we determine the importance of proper wavefield separation using 3C recordings, which is the key to ensuring the quality of the final image. With an optimized VSP imaging workflow, we provide an enhanced image for the fractured basement to support the geologic interpretations and development decisions.

DAS-VSP interferometric imaging: CO2CRC Otway Project feasibility study

Recent advancements in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology open new ways for borehole-based seismic monitoring of CO2 geosequestration. Compared to 4D surface seismic monitoring, repeated vertical seismic profiling (VSP) surveys with DAS receivers considerably reduce the cost and invasiveness of time-lapse CO2 monitoring. However, standard borehole imaging techniques cannot provide the same level of reservoir illumination as 3D surface seismic. The performance of VSP imaging can be significantly improved with interferometric utilization of free-surface multiples. We have developed a feasibility study of interferometric imaging with a synthetic walkaway VSP data set, followed by its application to field walkaway VSP data recorded by conventional borehole geophones and two types of DAS (standard and engineered fibers). Both experiments (synthetic and field) demonstrate that interferometric imaging is a viable method to extend the subsurface image beyond the coverage of standard VSP imaging. Specifically, the interferometry approach provides a more detailed upper section of the subsurface, whereas standard migration of primary reflections provides a more detailed bottom part of the image. Comparison of the standard and engineered fibers indicates that both fibers are sensitive to free-surface multiples, but the engineered fiber provides a much higher signal-to-noise ratio; thus, it is preferable for interferometric imaging with multiples. The result obtained with the engineered DAS cable indicates that in the depth range suitable for both methods, the VSP interferometric image of the reflectors is comparable to the surface seismic image. The experiment on the field DAS data proves that DAS is sensitive enough to record the nonprimary wavefield for imaging and monitoring of the subsurface.

VSP Imaging Using Free-Surface Multiples With Wavefield Decomposition: Synthetic and Field Data Examples

Vertical seismic profiling (VSP) is an effective technique to provide high-resolution seismic images of the reservoir area. However, the quality of the images is limited by the poor illumination of primary reflection wave. In conventional VSP imaging, only the upgoing primaries are used. Adding free-surface–related multiples into the imaging process can significantly improve the coverage of the illuminated area. Conventional migration methods using multiples need the complex process of multiple prediction. Data-to-data migration (DDM) is an effective imaging technique for multiples in which the recorded data is migrated directly. To improve the imaging quality of DDM in VSP imaging, we propose separating the wavefield into downgoing and upgoing components using Hilbert transform when reverse-time migration (RTM) is implemented in DDM, and the inverse-scattering imaging condition is further applied to the decomposed wavefields. The proposed method eliminates low-frequency noises and false images generated from the conventional cross-correlation imaging condition, and further enhance the illumination in the VSP imaging. Synthetic examples and application to a walkaway field data demonstrate that it can attenuate the noise and improve the imaging resolution effectively. By using DDM with inverse scattering imaging condition and wavefield decomposition based on Hilbert transform, VSP imaging using free-surface–related multiples becomes a practical complement for conventional VSP imaging.

Multiwell 3D distributed acoustic sensing vertical seismic profile imaging with engineered fibers: CO2CRC Otway Project case study

The 4D surface seismic monitoring is a standard method for reservoir surveillance during the production of hydrocarbons or CO2 injection. However, land 4D seismic acquisition campaigns are often associated with high cost and disruptions to industrial operation or agricultural activities in the area of acquisition. An alternative technique for time-lapse monitoring of the subsurface is the 3D vertical seismic profiling (VSP), which becomes particularly attractive when used with distributed acoustic fiber-optic sensors (DAS) installed in wells. The advantages of 3D DAS VSP include its relatively low cost, minimal footprint on the local area during acquisition, and superior spatial resolution compared to the resolution of geophones. The potential of this technique is explored by processing and analyzing multiwell 3D DAS VSP data acquired at the CO2CRC Otway Project site in Victoria, Australia. The DAS data were recorded using an engineered fiber with enhanced backscattering cemented behind the casing of five wells. The data from each well are processed individually using the same processing flow and then migrated using a 3D migration code tailored to DAS data. Having DAS along the full extent of multiple wells ensures adequate seismic coverage of the area of CO2 injection. The migrated images provide detailed information about the subsurface up to 700 m away from a well and up to 2 km depth. The images are consistent with previously acquired geophone VSP and surface seismic data. The quality of the 3D DAS VSP imaging is comparable or superior to the quality of conventional imaging using geophone data. Therefore, 3D DAS VSP is a demonstrably optimal solution for reservoir monitoring.

Evaluating 3D and 4D DAS VSP image quality of subsea carbon storage

In all carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects, monitoring, verification, and accounting is required to span short to long periods to ensure plume extents and geologic integrity meet operational and regulatory objectives. Fiber-optic cables permanently deployed in the completions of injector wells enable time-lapse (4D) vertical seismic profile (VSP) imaging using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). Most CCUS projects are onshore, and the majority of those utilize supercritical CO2flooding for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In these cases, fiber-optic installations, acquisition, and analysis are relatively straightforward. Offshore transport and storage projects, whether for EOR or sequestration in saline aquifers, may utilize subsea wells wherein fiber-optic deployment is not as straightforward. Unlike dry-tree wells, DAS of subsea wells requires advanced optical engineering solutions to compensate for the reduced acoustic bandwidth, optical losses, and back reflections accumulated through umbilicals, multiple wet- and dry-mate optical connectors, splices, optical feedthrough systems, and downhole fibers. In this paper, we simulate VSP shot records of a carbon storage site for a variety of proposed subsea DAS concepts and evaluate the 3D and 4D seismic image quality of each using Kirchhoff migration of upgoing seismic wavefields with their expected signal-to-noise ratios. We normalize interrogator performance, so we are evaluating the sensing topology only. We show that a subsea fiber topology consisting of dual transmission fibers, a remote circulator with selective amplification of the backscattered light, and enhanced backscatter sensing fiber results in high-quality seismic images suitable for both 3D and 4D VSPs of carbon storage.

Imaging improvements from subsalt 3D VSP acquisitions in the Gulf of Mexico

From 2015 through 2018, BP acquired six large-scale 3D vertical seismic profile (VSP) data sets at their Gulf of Mexico assets, two at each of the Thunder Horse, Mad Dog, and Atlantis fields. The acquisition of these large-scale data sets was enabled by the development of a 100-level wireline tool and the adoption of simultaneous shooting. With those two developments, it became feasible to acquire data sets with the coverage and data density needed to build high-quality images of the subsurface using 3D VSP acquisitions. There have been recent advances in finite difference modeling to guide the survey design and the high-quality processing that is required to create the 3D VSP image volumes. These volumes have two main advantages over conventional surface seismic data. First, in 3D VSP acquisition, the receiver can be located below the overlying salt bodies, which allows for illumination of the reservoirs that cannot be achieved using surface seismic data. Second, the location of the receivers closer to the imaging targets enables higher frequency content of the resulting VSP data compared to conventional surface seismic images. Both imaging enhancements can have a significant business value, and the resulting VSP data sets have demonstrated a clear impact on business decisions. In the three case studies, we demonstrate the business impact of the 3D VSP data acquired through improvement of imaging of stratigraphic edges, improved interpretation of fault geometry and orientation, and related improvement of the quality of well planning and targeting. We conclude with discussion on cost, global impact, and present recommendations and lessons learned for future surveys.

Fluid prediction of a deep carbonate reservoir using walkaround 3D-3C vertical seismic profiling data

AbstractThe considerable depth and complicated structure of the Tahe Oilfield in the Tuofutai area of China make it very difficult to delineate its Ordovician carbonate fracture-cavity reservoir. The resolution of conventional ground seismic data is inadequate to satisfy current exploitation requirements. To further improve the understanding of the carbonate fracture-cavity reservoir of the Tahe Oilfield and to provide predictions of reservoir properties that are more accurate, a walkaround 3D-3C vertical seismic profiling (VSP) survey was conducted. First, we preprocessed raw VSP data and developed a method of joint PP- and PSV-wave prestack time migration. In contrast to ground seismic imaging profiles, VSP imaging profiles have a higher resolution and wider spectrum range that provide more detailed strata information. Then, using the joint PP- and PSV-wave prestack inversion method, we obtained the PP- and PSV-wave impedance and Poisson's ratio parameters of the Ordovician carbonate reservoir. Compared with the P-wave impedance of the ground seismic inversion, we found the VSP inversion results had higher accuracy, which enabled clearer identification of the internal characteristics of the carbonate reservoir. Finally, coupled with the Poisson's ratio attribute, we predicted the distribution of favorable reservoirs and interwell connectivity. The prediction results were verified using both logging and production data. The findings of this study demonstrate the applicability of the proposed technical method for the exploration of deep carbonate fracture-cavity reservoirs.

Application of Gaussian beam migration to VSP imaging

Vertical seismic profiling (VSP) technology plays an important role in oil and gas exploration. It can obtain data in the well with higher resolution than conventional surface seismic imaging methods, and effectively identify small faults along the well, thereby improving the description accuracy of the reservoir. Gaussian beam migration (GBM) has the ability to calculate the multi-arrival travel time, which has the advantages of both high efficiency and high imaging accuracy. In this paper, the observation system and the local plane wave decomposition step will be adjusted to expand the prestack GBM into a VSP imaging method. A layer model and a complex model will be employed to verify the imaging ability of VSP GBM. The correctness of VSP GBM will be proved by practical data test through comparing the results of VSP GBM with Kirchhoff migration in surface seismic.

Borehole seismic survey using multimode optical fibers in a hybrid wireline

Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to geophone arrays for the acquisition of borehole seismic data. The ability to deploy optical fibers into a well, either as a cable based intervention or as part of a completion string, allows for the entire wellbore to be surveyed with every source activation. This can dramatically reduce the operating time required to complete a normal survey as well as offering the opportunity to achieve much higher spatial coverage than is typical of current technologies. The ability to acquire borehole seismic data in a producing well without the need to disrupt production also offers significant benefits to the operator.Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a novel technology that uses an optical fiber cable as a sensor for acoustic signals and can take almost any downhole fiber-optic installation or deployment and turn the fiber optic cable into a large downhole seismic array. This array can provide enhanced Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) imaging and monitor fluids and pressures changes in the hydrocarbon production reservoir. Walkaway VSP data acquired over a former producing well in north eastern China provided a rich set of very high quality DAS Walkaway VSP data. A standard VSP data pre-processing workflow was applied, followed by prestack Kirchhoff time migration. In the DAS pre-processing step we were faced with additional and special challenges: strong coherent noise due to cable slapping and ringing along the borehole casing. In comparison with an earlier offset VSP data set using 327-levels acquired with conventional 3C downhole geophones in the same well, the final pre-processed DAS walkaway VSP has a larger vertical aperture resulting in a wider lateral image. The single well DAS Walkaway VSP images provide a good result with higher vertical and lateral resolution than the surface seismic in the objective area. The vertical well environment without the ability to effectively “clamp” the sensor to the borehole casing wall by touching, creates a unique set of challenges. Although earth signal was recorded with almost all the shots, there was also a considerable amount of noise. Much of the noise was due to the physical placement of the wireline in the well and expressed by slapping and ringing. This paper reports on lessons learned in the handling of the wireline cable and subsequent special DAS data processing steps developed to remediate some of the practical wireline deployment issues. Optical wireline cable as a conveyance of fiber optic cables for VSP in vertical wells will open the use of the DAS system to much wider applications.

VSP wavefield separation using the gray-scale Hough transform: synthetic data

The principal objective in Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) processing is the separation of the downgoing and upgoing wavefields. Several methods have been suggested in this area. This paper presents a new approach based on the gray-scale Hough transform (GSHT) which is an extension of the conventional Hough transform used to detect straight lines and other curves. The technique, we suggest here, directly maps the gray-scale VSP image, including the downgoing and upgoing linear events, in image coordinate space (x,t,g) to the gray Hough parameter counting space (θ,ρ,g), where θ and ρ are the polar parameters and g is the gray-scale value. In this new space, the downgoing events appear in the negative angles θ quadrant and the upgoing in the positive quadrant, owning to their opposite apparent velocities. The inverse GSHT algorithm, we developed in this study, is performed for extracting separately these two wavefields by considering the straight lines that satisfy the corresponding filtering conditions. The experimental results on synthetic VSP datasets are convincing. The wave separation is well performed, even in the presence of loud noise levels, with signal to noise ratio improvement and amplitude preservation, in contrast to median filtering.

Reverse time migration of 3D vertical seismic profile data

Reverse time migration (RTM) has shown increasing advantages in handling seismic images of complex subsurface media, but it has not been used widely in 3D seismic data due to the large storage and computation requirements. Our prime objective was to develop an RTM strategy that was applicable to 3D vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data. The strategy consists of two aspects: storage saving and calculation acceleration. First, we determined the use of the random boundary condition (RBC) to save the storage in wavefield simulation. An absorbing boundary such as the perfect matching layer boundary is often used in RTM, but it has a high memory demand for storing the source wavefield. RBC is a nonabsorbing boundary and only stores the source wavefield at the two maximum time steps, then repropagates the source wavefield backwards at every time step, and hence, it significantly reduces the memory requirement. Second, we examined the use of the graphic processing unit (GPU) parallelization technique to accelerate the computation. RBC needs to simulate the source wavefield twice and doubles the computation. Thus, it is very necessary to realize the RTM algorithm by GPU, especially for a 3D VSP data set. GPU and central processing unit (CPU) collaborated parallel implementation can greatly reduce the computation time, where the CPU performs serial code, and the GPU performs parallel code. Because RBC does not need the same huge amount of storage as an absorbing boundary, RTM becomes practically applicable for 3D VSP imaging.

Imaging By Multiples: A Case study in the Carnarvon Basin

Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) is renowned for its high resolution images of the subsurface. By and large, the images derived are beneath the well. Now a new technique allows imaging above the borehole by utilizing free surface multiples as a secondary source. A number of conditions need to be met for this technique to successfully meet its objectives. This paper presents a case study of data acquired recently in the Carnarvon basin and processed to derive an image above the well. The high-resolution, multiple-free VSP image allows verification of the shallow part of the subsurface. This information can be used to identify drilling hazards, faults and generally improve subsurface interpretation. The result can also be used to overcome the limitations of poor cementing which often causes casing ringing noise, which in itself is detrimental to VSP imaging. Subsequently, the size of the VSP image for this survey was increased by a factor of 2, thus greatly improving the value of acquisition.

Velocity analysis with vertical seismic profile data using migration of surface-related multiples

We have developed an original method for migration velocity analysis for vertical seismic profile (VSP) data. The method is based on VSP imaging with the primary reflected data and surface-related multiples. Velocity updates are carried out by matching the images obtained by these two types of waves. To do it automatically, we have introduced an objective function of the crosscorrelation type and developed a gradient-based maximization algorithm. On synthetic walk-away VSP data sets, we found that maximization of the crosscorrelation of the images provided by the two different types of waves allowed the retrieval of the interval velocities below the borehole receivers — a problem that was considered to be challenging with a VSP acquisition. Also, the possibility of the lateral velocity gradient reconstruction was developed on a simple synthetic model. On the real walk-away VSP data set from the North Sea, we found that the method could also be used for estimation of effective anisotropy parameters below the borehole receivers. In all of our examples, the velocity model refinement based on the presented method led to significant improvements of the seismic images.

Dual-well 3D vertical seismic profile enabled by distributed acoustic sensing in deepwater Gulf of Mexico

We have acquired and processed 3D vertical seismic profile (VSP) data recorded simultaneously in two wells using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) during the acquisition of the 2012 Mars 4D ocean-bottom seismic survey in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The objectives of the project were to assess the quality of DAS data recorded in fiber-optic cables from the surface to the total depth, to demonstrate the efficacy of the DAS VSP technology in a deepwater environment, to derisk the use of the technology for future water injection or production monitoring without intervention, and to exploit the velocity information that 3D VSP data provide for evaluating and updating the velocity model. We evaluated the advantages of DAS VSP to reduce costs and intrusiveness, and we determined that high-quality images can be obtained from relatively noisy raw 3D DAS VSP data, as evidenced by the well 1 image, probably the best 3D VSP image we have ever seen. Our results also revealed that the direct arrival traveltimes can be used to assess the quality of an existing velocity model and to invert for an improved velocity model. We identified issues with the DAS acquisition and the processing steps to mitigate them and to handle problems specific to DAS VSP data. We described the steps for conditioning the data before migration, reverse time migration, and postmigration processing to reduce noise artifacts. We outlined a novel first-break picking procedure that works even in the absence of a strong first arrival and a velocity diagnosis method to assess and validate velocity models and velocity updates. Finally, we determined potential applications to 4D monitoring of fluid movement around producer or injector wells, identification of active salt movements, and more accurate imaging and monitoring of complex structures around the wells.

Vertical seismic profile Kirchhoff migration with structure dip constraint

Prestack Kirchhoff depth migration is commonly used in borehole seismic imaging, where there is uneven illumination due to the limitations of the source-receiver geometry. A new vertical seismic profile (VSP) migration/imaging workflow has been established that incorporates the structure-dip information derived from a newly developed structure tensor analysis into the existing VSP Kirchhoff migration/imaging technique. This allows us to better image the structures in the vicinity of a borehole and the far-field dipping events away from the borehole. We tested the workflow with the HESS salt model. The results were compared with those from reverse time migration, which found that Kirchhoff migration combined with structure-dip information not only reduced ambiguities of the imaging result but also allowed for imaging dip structures (e.g., fault) in the far region from the borehole. This allows for imaging dip structures and provides a useful extension of existing VSP imaging capabilities using Kirchhoff migration.
