The construction and use of a new apparatus designed for the electrophoretic elution of macromolecules from polyacrylamide gel slabs following electrophoretic separations is described. The apparatus consists of a series of recovery cells horizontally aligned and separated from one another and from two electrodebuffer compartments by semipermeable membranes. Materials from up to eight gel sections may be eluted simultaneously. The application of the apparatus to the recovery of protein components of commercial bovine serum albumin from preparative polyacrylamide gel slabs is illustrated.
