Association Between Myopia and Pupil Diameter in Preschoolers: Evidence from a Machine Learning Approach Based on a Real-World Large-Scale Dataset.

Previous studies have explored the connections between various ocular biological parameters with myopia. Our previous study also found that pupil data can predict the myopic progression during the interventions for myopia. However, studies exploring the association between pupil diameter and myopia in preschoolers with myopia were lacking. Hence this study was aimed to investigate the association between pupil diameter and myopia in preschoolers with myopia based on a real-world, large-scale dataset. Data containing 650,671 preschoolers were collected from a total of 1943 kindergartens in Shenzhen, China. Refraction and pupil parameters were collected. After data filtering, the occurrence of myopia and its association with age, gender, pupil diameter, and other variables, were analyzed. Random forest (RF) and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were selected from seven machine learning algorithms to build the model. The mean decrease accuracy (MDA), mean decrease Gini (MDG), and gain feature importance (GFI) techniques were employed to quantify the importance of pupil diameter and other features. After the assessments, 51,325 valid records with complete pupil data were included, and 3468 (6.76%) were identified as myopia based on the calculated cycloplegic refraction. Preschoolers with myopia presented reduced pupil diameter and greater variation (5.00 ± 0.99mm) compared to non-myopic preschoolers (6.22 ± 0.67mm). A nonlinear relationship was found according to the scatterplots between pupil diameter and refraction (R2 = 0.14). Especially preschoolers with myopia had reduced pupil diameter compared to emmetropic preschoolers, but hyperope did not experience additional pupil enlargement. After adjusting for other covariates, this relationship is still consistent (P < 0.001). XGBoost and RF algorithms presented the highest performance and validated the importance of pupil diameter in myopia. Based on a real-world large-scale dataset, the current study illuminated that preschoolers with myopia had a reduced pupil diameter compared to emmetropic preschoolers with a nonlinear pattern. A clinical ultrasound algorithm to identify uterine sarcoma and smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential in patients with myometrial lesions: the MYometrial Lesion UltrasouNd And mRi study

BackgroundDifferential diagnosis between benign uterine smooth muscle tumors and malignant counterpart is challenging. We evaluated the accuracy of a clinical and ultrasound based algorithm in predicting mesenchimal uterine malignancies (MUMs), including smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs). MethodsWe report the twelve-months follow-up of an observational, prospective, single-centre study that included women with at least one myometrial lesion ≥3 cm on ultrasound examination. These patients were classified according to a three-class diagnostic algorithm, using symptoms and ultrasound features. “White” patients underwent annual telephone follow-up for 2 years, “Green” patients underwent a clinical and ultrasound follow-up at 6, 12 and 24 months and “Orange” patients underwent surgery. We further developed a risk class system to stratify the malignancy risk. Findings2,268 women were included andtarget lesion was classified as benign in 2,158 (95.1%), as other malignancies in 58 (2.6%) an as mesenchymal uterine malignancies in 52 (2.3%) patients. At multivariable analysis, age (OR 1.05 (95% CI 1.03-1.07), tumor diameter >8 cm (OR 5.92 (95% CI 2.87-12.24), irregular margins (OR 2.34 (95% CI 1.09-4.98), color score=4 (OR 2.73 (95% CI 1.28-5.82), were identified as independent risk factors for malignancies, whereas acoustic shadow resulted in an independent protective factor (OR 0.39 (95% CI 0.19-0.82). The model, which included age as a continuous variable and lesion diameter as a dichotomized variable (cut-off 81 mm), provided the best AUC (0.87 (95% CI 0.82-0.91)). A risk class system was developed, and patients were classified as low-risk (predictive model value <0.39%: 0/606 malignancies, risk 0%), intermediate risk (predictive model value 0.40%-2.2%: 9/1,093 malignancies, risk 0.8%), high risk (predictive model value ≥2.3%: 43/566 malignancies, risk 7.6%). ConclusionThe preoperative three-class diagnostic algorithm and risk class system can stratify women according to risk of malignancy. Our findings, if confirmed in a multicentre study, will permit differentiation between benign and MUMs allowing a personalized clinical approach. FundingNothing to declare.

In Silico Design of Heterogeneous Microvascular Trees Using Generative Adversarial Networks and Constrained Constructive Optimization.

Designing physiologically adequate microvascular trees is of crucial relevance for bioengineering functional tissues and organs. Yet, currently available methods are poorly suited to replicate the morphological and topological heterogeneity of real microvascular trees because the parameters used to control tree generation are too simplistic to mimic results of the complex angiogenetic and structural adaptation processes invivo. We propose a method to overcome this limitation by integrating a conditional deep convolutional generative adversarial network (cDCGAN) with a local fractal dimension-oriented constrained constructive optimization (LFDO-CCO) strategy. The cDCGAN learns the patterns of real microvascular bifurcations allowing for their artificial replication. The LFDO-CCO strategy connects the generated bifurcations hierarchically to form microvascular trees with a vessel density corresponding to that observed in healthy tissues. The generated artificial microvascular trees are consistent with real microvascular trees regarding characteristics such as fractal dimension, vascular density, and coefficient of variation of diameter, length, and tortuosity. These results support the adoption of the proposed strategy for the generation of artificial microvascular trees in tissue engineering as well as for computational modeling and simulations of microcirculatory physiology.

Perioperative optic nerve sheath diameter variations in patients with end-stage renal failure undergoing robotic-assisted kidney transplant: a prospective observational study.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who undergo hemodialysis are predisposed to interstitial cerebral edema. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery can increase optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and intracranial pressure. The impact of robotic-assisted kidney transplant (RAKT) on ONSD is complicated by the presence of CKD, the administration of furosemide and mannitol, and the manipulation of hemodynamics. We examined ONSD variations in patients undergoing RAKT over a 1-year period at our institution. Furthermore, we attempted to identify any perioperative hemodynamic factors influencing these changes. This prospective study included 20 patients undergoing RAKT. ONSD, heart rate, central venous pressure, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured following intubation (T1), after assuming the steep Trendelenburg position (T2), 1 hour after docking (T3), upon reperfusion (T4), after transition to the supine position (T5), and 3 hours postextubation (T6). Repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc Bonferroni correction was employed to compare variables at each time point. Pearson correlation analysis was utilized to assess relationships between variables. P-values ≤0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. ONSD (in mm) increased from T1 (3.60±0.44) to T3 (4.06±0.45, P=0.002) and T4 (3.99±0.62, P=0.046), before falling to its lowest value at T6 (3.42±0.64, P=0.002). Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant correlations (P<0.05) between changes in ONSD at T3 and both DBP (r=0.637) and MAP (r=0.522). During RAKT with open ureteric anastomosis, ONSD initially increased, then decreased following reperfusion. DBP and MAP displayed positive correlations with ONSD changes at T3.

This study aims to determine the effect of temperature value on conductivity value (conduction heat rate) in conduction heat transfer. The method used in this research is an experimental method with variable temperature and variable conductivity values of materials using amrita virtual lab simulation software. The variable variation used in this study is the difference in materials using cardboard and glass with variations in voltage, current, diameter and thickness of the same material. The results of this study indicate the effect of temperature on the conductivity value, if the conductivity value of a material is small then the temperature will be large because this experiment was conducted on insulating materials on both objects. Pengaruh Variasi Diameter Pipa Primer Terhadap Pola Resapan Air Irigasi tetes Bertingkat Pada Media Tanam Polybag

Multilevel drip irrigation is an irrigation method that supports water-saving agricultural activities in limited areas by channeling water through perforated pipes from emitters. The ideal multistage drip irrigation system can provide the same drip volume to plants, so the distribution of irrigation water and its depth need to be important factors to pay attention to in order to provide optimal plant irrigation. This research aims to determine the effect of using variations in primary channel pipe diameter on the distribution of drip irrigation and the depth of infiltration of irrigation products in a 3 (three) tier drip irrigation network. Tests were carried out on primary pipes from floors 1 to 3 with a diameter of ½", ¾" and pipes 1", with lateral drip pipes with ½" PVC. The size of the test field is 4 m x 1 m x 1.8 m and the distance between levels is around 0.9 m and the irrigation water source from a 200 liter tank is 2.5 m high. The research results showed that irrigation distribution results were quite good at all levels of the irrigation network, namely 70 ml and 68 ml. Irrigation patterns do not have a significant effect on the results of irrigation distribution due to variations in primary pipe diameter. A soil composition of 30% compost has achieved irrigation infiltration with a depth of 21 cm, including the fastest, namely 25 minutes and for 70% soil, an irrigation infiltration time of 35 minutes is required.

Light-Triggered Reversible Swelling of Azobenzene-Containing Block Copolymer Worms via Confined Deformation Prepared by Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly.

Stimuli-responsive block copolymer nanoparticles (NPs) have received close attention in recent years owing to their tremendous application potential in smart materials. Azobenzene-containing NPs are widely studied due to the advantages of light as a stimulus and fast reversible trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene chromophores. However, the inefficient preparation process and difficult reversible transformation of morphologies limit their development. Herein it is demonstrated that the light-triggered reversible swelling behavior of wormlike NPs with high azobenzene content could be realized via confined deformation. These worms are prepared in large quantities via polymerization-induced self-assembly based on the copolymerization of 11-(4-(4-butylphenylazo)phenoxy)undecyl methacrylate (MAAz) and N-(methacryloxy)succinimide (NMAS) monomers. Upon UV/visible light irradiation, the reversible deformation of worms is achieved when the feed molar ratio of NMAS/MAAz is relatively high or via crosslinking using diamines, which leads to the reduction of the photoisomerization efficiency. The diameter variation of the worms is influenced by the amount and types of crosslinkers. Moreover, the scalability of this strategy is further proved by the fabrication of photo- and reductant-responsive crosslinked worms. It is expected that this study not only provides a new route to affording reversible photoresponsive NPs but also offers a unique insight into the reversible photodeformation mechanism of azobenzene-containing NPs.

Identification and Comprehensive Analysis of OFP Genes for Fruit Shape Influence in Mango.

OVATE family proteins (OFPs) are a class of plant-specific proteins with a conserved OVATE domain that play fundamental roles in fruit development and plant growth. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an economically important subtropical fruit tree characterized by a diverse array of fruit shapes and sizes. Despite extensive research on OFPs across various species, there remains a scarcity of information regarding OFPs in mango. Here, we have successfully identified 25 OFP genes (MiOFPs) in mango, each of which exhibits the conserved OVATE domains. The MiOFP gene exhibit a range of 2-6 motifs, with all genes containing both motif 1 and motif 2. Phylogenetic analysis on 97 OFPs (including 18 AtOFPs, 24 SlOFPs, 25 MiOFPs, and 30 OsOFPs) indicated that MiOFPs could be divided into three main clades: clade I, II, and III. Comparative morphological analysis identified significant variations in fruit longitudinal diameter, fruit transverse diameter, and fruit shape index between two distinct shaped mango cultivars ('Hongxiangya' and 'Jingpingmang') at DAP5, DAP7, and DAP10 stages. The subsequent examination of paraffin sections revealed distinct patterns of cell elongation. The majority of MiOFP genes exhibited predominantly expressed in developing organs, specifically flowers and immature fruits, while displaying distinct expression patterns. RNA-Seq analysis revealed significant disparities in the expression levels of several OFP genes, including MiOFP5, MiOFP11, MiOFP21, MiOFP22, MiOFP23, and MiOFP25, between the two mango cultivars. These findings suggest that these six genes may play a crucial role for fruit shape in mango, especially the MiOFP22. The findings of this study have established a basis for future investigations into MiOFPs in mango, offering a solid foundation for further research in this field.

Optimum core structural design of the polymer optical waveguides as edge couplers for co-packaging.

We simulate the optical properties of polymer optical waveguides with different refractive index profiles in their cores as coupling components (edge couplers) between single-mode fiber and SiOx waveguides. In this paper, we focus on the single-mode operation of graded-index (GI) core polymer waveguides, for which we previously demonstrated low propagation loss under multimode operation. We design the optimum core structure (size and index contrast) for different refractive index profiles, and then demonstrate the unique optical properties of GI waveguides contributing to the low optical loss compared to the step-index counterparts, in particular, mode field diameter variation and taper angle tolerance.

Assessment of Pinus halepensis Forests’ Vulnerability Using the Temporal Dynamics of Carbon Stocks and Fire Traits in Tunisia

Carbon stocks provide information that is essential for analyzing the role of forests in global climate mitigation, yet they are highly vulnerable to wildfires in Mediterranean ecosystems. These carbon stocks’ exposure to fire is usually estimated from specific allometric equations relating tree height and diameter to the overall amount of aboveground carbon storage. Assessments of vulnerability to fire additionally allow for specific fire resistance (bark thickness, crown basal height) and post-fire recovery traits (cone mass for regeneration, and fine branches or leaves mass for flammability) to be accounted for. These traits are usually considered as static, and their temporal dynamic is rarely assessed, thus preventing a full assessment of carbon stocks’ vulnerability and subsequent cascading effects. This study aimed to measure the pools of carbon stocks of individual trees varying between 30 and 96 years old in the Djbel Mansour Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) forest in semi-arid central Tunisia in the southern range of its distribution to fit a sigmoid equation of the carbon pools and traits recovery according to age as a vulnerability framework. Allometric equations were then developed to establish the relationships between fire vulnerability traits and dendrometric independent variables (diameter at breast height, height, and live crown length) for further use in regional vulnerability assessments. The total carbon stocks in trees varied from 29.05 Mg C ha−1 to 92.47 Mg C ha−1. The soil organic carbon stock (SOC) at a maximum soil depth of 0–40 cm varied from 31.67 Mg C ha−1 to 115.67 Mg C ha−1 at a soil depth of 0–70 cm. We could identify an increasing resistance related to increasing bark thickness and basal crown height with age, and enhanced regeneration capacity after 25 years of age with increasing cone biomass, converging toward increasing vulnerability and potential cascading effects under shorter interval fires. These results should be considered for rigorous forest carbon sequestration assessment under increasing fire hazards due to climate and social changes in the region.

Diatom Cribellum-Inspired Hierarchical Metamaterials: Unifying Perfect Absorption Toward Subwavelength Color Printing.

Diatom exoskeletons, known as frustules, exhibit a unique multilayer structure that has attracted considerable attention across interdisciplinary research fields as a source of biomorphic inspiration. These frustules possess a hierarchical porous structure, ranging from millimeter-scale foramen pores to nanometer-scale cribellum pores. In this study, this natural template for nanopattern design is leveraged to showcase metamaterials that integrates perfect absorption and subwavelength color printing. The cribellum-inspired hierarchical nanopatterns, organized in a hexagonal unit cell with a periodicity of 300nm, are realized through a single-step electron beam lithography process. By employing numerical models, it is uncovered that an additional induced collective dipole mode is the key mechanism responsible for achieving outstanding performance in absorption, reaching up to 99%. Analysis of the hierarchical organization reveals that variations in nanoparticle diameter and inter-unit-cell distance lead to shifts and broadening of the resonance peaks. It is also demonstrated that the hierarchical nanopatterns are capable of color reproduction with high uniformity and fidelity, serving as hexagonal pixels for high-resolution color printing. These cribellum-inspired metamaterials offer a novel approach to multifunctional metamaterial design, presenting aesthetic potential applications in the development of robotics and wearable electronic devices, such as smart skin or surface coatings integrated with energy harvesting functionalities.

Comparisons of Rice Seed Growths Due to Alternating and Direct Current Electric and Magnetic Field Influences

It is commonly known that electric and magnetic fields of power transmission negatively and positively influence plants. Unfortunately, studies on these influences are minimal, particularly considering the comparison between magnetic field and electric field, on both DC (direct current) and AC (alternating current). This research aims to compare the influences of magnetic field and electric field, both on AC and DC, on rice plant growth. Firstly, prototypes, including the equipment, were constructed to generate AC and DC electric fields using parallel plates of a medium voltage transformer and Cockroft-Walton circuits. Meanwhile, the AC and DC magnetic fields were prepared using three different diameter current-injected coils. The rice seeds were exposed to electric and magnetic fields for one month, with plate distance and coil diameter variations. The results showed that the rice seeds grew differently according to the respective types and magnitudes of the fields. In the first two days, the rice seed growths exposed to electric and magnetic fields were higher than those without field exposures. However, since the thirteenth day, the rice growth rate with field exposure was lower than without. This study also shows that the influences of the DC electric and magnetic fields were more potent than the AC fields. The averages of rice seed growth decreasing rate for the AC and DC electric fields and AC and DC magnetic fields were 0.00827 cm/(kV/m), 0.01167 cm/(kV/m), -0.13267 cm/mT and 1.99005 cm/mT, respectively. As a general suggestion in sites, rice plants should be avoided from a transmission line due to high voltage direct current (DC) rather than that alternating current (AC).

Effects of Tube Voltage and Phantom Diameter on Noise Inhomogeneity of CT Image

To investigate the effects of tube voltage and phantom diameter on noise inhomogeneity of computed tomography (CT) image. This study used a step-wedge water cylindrical phantom with four diameters (i.e., 8, 16, 24, and 32 cm). The phantom was scanned with GE 128- Slice CT scanner with tube voltage variation of 80, 100, 120, and 140 kV. Noise inhomogeneity was measured using IndoQCT software. The noise inhomogeneity measurement was started with creating noise maps on the image with kernel size of 11 pixels. After that, multiple region of interests (ROIs) with size of 15 pixels were placed at 85% of image area. The noise inhomogeneity was determined as difference between the highest and the lowest noises from each ROI. : It was found that the highest noise inhomogeneity is at phantom diameter of 32 cm and tube voltage of 80 kV (14.00 ± 0.93 HU), and the lowest noise inhomogeneity is at phantom diameter of 8 cm and tube voltage of 140 kV (0.40 ± 0.02 HU). The trends of the tube voltage and phantom diameter on noise inhomogeneity were similar to the trends of the noise level, i.e., noise inhomogeneity increases with increasing phantom diameter and with decreasing tube voltage. Effects of variations of tube voltage and phantom diameter on the noise inhomogeneity has been investigated. Trends of the noise inhomogeneity due to tube voltage and phantom diameter are the same as trends of the noise level.

Short-term treatment with Uncaria tomentosa aggravates the injury phenotype in mdx mice

Introduction: Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex Roem. &amp; Schult.) DC. (Rubiaceae) or UT is a medicinal plant with antiviral, antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe muscle wasting disease caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene; this deficiency leads to sarcolemma instability, inflammation, muscle degeneration and fibrosis. Objective: Considering the importance of inflammation to dystrophy progression and the anti-inflammatory activity of UT, in the present study we evaluated whether oral administration of UT extract would ameliorate dystrophy in the mdx mice, a DMD model. Methods: Eight-week-old male mdx mice were submitted to 200 mg/kg body weight daily UT oral administration for 6 weeks. General histopathology was analysed, and muscle tumor necrosis factor α, transforming growth factor-β, myostatin and osteopontin transcript levels were assessed. The ability of mice to sustain limb tension to oppose their gravitational force was measured. Data were analysed with the unpaired Student’s t-test. Results: Morphologically, both untreated and UT-treated animals exhibited internalised nuclei, increased endomysial connective tissue and variations in muscle fibre diameters. Body weight and muscle strength were significantly reduced in the UT-treated animals. Blood creatine kinase was higher in UT-treated compared to untreated animals. In tibialis anterior, myostatin, transcript was more highly expressed in the UT-treated while in the diaphragm muscle, transforming growth factor-β transcripts were less expressed in the UT-treated. Conclusion: While previous studies identified anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and anticarcinogenic UT effects, the extract indicates worsening of dystrophic muscles phenotype after short-term treatment in mdx mice.

Influence of particle diameter on aerosolization performance and release of budesonide loaded mesoporous silica particles

The potential of micron-sized amorphous mesoporous silica particles as a novel controlled release drug delivery system for pulmonary administration has been investigated. Mesoporous silica formulations were demonstrated to provide a narrower particle size distribution and (spherical) shape uniformity compared to commercial micronized formulations, which is critical for repeatable and targeted aerosol delivery to the lungs. The release profiles of a well-known pulmonary drug loaded into mesoporous particles of different mean particle diameters (2.4, 3.9 and 6.3 µm) were analysed after aerosolization in a modified Andersen Cascade Impactor. Systematic control of the release rate of drug loaded into the particles was demonstrated in simulated lung fluid by variation of the mean particle diameter, as well as an enhanced release compared to a commercial micronized formulation. The mesoporous silica formulations all demonstrated an increased release rate of the loaded drug and moreover, under aerosolization from a commercial, low-cost dry powder inhaler (DPI) device, the formulations showed excellent performance, with low retainment and commercially viable fine particle fractions (FPFs). In addition, the measured median mass aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of the different formulations (2.8, 4.1 and 6.2 µm) was shown to be tuneable with particle size, which can be helpful for targeting different regions in the lung. Together these results demonstrate that mesoporous silica formulations offer a promising novel alternative to current dry powder formulations for pulmonary drug delivery.

Regional variations in left ventricular myocyte diameter and nuclear length in post mortem population: implications in assessing myocyte hypertrophy

ABSTRACT Cardiac hypertrophy can be appreciated microscopically by assessing for myocyte hypertrophy. Features of myocyte hypertrophy include increased myocyte diameter, together with increase in nuclear hyperchromicity, size and irregularity, and an increase in binucleated myocytes. There is limited literature to demonstrate whether these features are uniform within the myocardium in the post mortem setting. This study compared the myocyte diameter, myocyte nuclear length, and proportion binucleated myocytes between the free wall of the left ventricle and interventricular septum in 21 post mortem cases. It showed regional variation in myocyte hypertrophy parameters between the free walls of the left ventricle and intraventricular septum. Over 75% of cases showed significant differences in myocyte nuclear length and myocyte diameter (ANOVA one-way, p < 0.05), whereas binucleated myocyte nuclei did not show any significant difference. The result of this study has implication in sampling and assessing myocyte hypertrophy. Further studies are recommended to explore the reasons why this variation occurred and whether it is clinically significant.

Proposal of an Original Methodology to Evaluate the Performance of Chipper Machines

Wood fuel from the agroforestry sector is one of the main strategies cited by the EU for reducing energetic dependance on foreign markets. Its sustainability, both economic and environmental, can be improved through the optimization of harvesting and chipping operations. This study was focused on the dynamic and energetic balance of the chipping phase carried out by a chipper operated by the power-take-off (PTO) of a medium-power tractor. Both machines were equipped with sensors for real-time monitoring of fuel consumption, PTO torque and speed, trunk diameter and working time during the comminution of 61 poplar trees grown in a medium rotation coppice system. The data analysis was carried out on the entire dataset (about 29,000 records) without considering their belonging to different trees. By means of proper data ordinations, it has been possible to define all the intervals in which the chipping stopped (e.g., between two trees) and to exclude them from the intervals of actual chipping. This has allowed forcomputation of operative and actual working time, as well as of the basic power required to operate the chipper and the power for actual chipping. Subsequently, the parameter values observed during actual chipping were related to the cutting diameters measured at the same instant. Subsequently, the dataset was divided according to seven diameter classes, and, for each class, the descriptive statistical indices of working time, work productivity, CO2 emissions, energy requirement and fuel consumption were calculated. Eventually, the correlation between the variations in trunk diameter and other parameters was verified both on the whole dataset and based on the class average values. The analysis made it possible to identify the conditions of greatest efficiency for the chipper. More generally, the method could help to increase the accuracy of measurements aimed at characterizing the performance of chippers from the point of view of dynamic energy requirements as well as in relation to different wood species.

Deep learning–based eye tracking system to detect distracted driving

To investigate drivers’ gaze behavior and the characteristics of their gaze positions while driving, a natural driving behavior test method was employed alongside a non-contact eye-tracking device to conduct an in-vehicle experiment for collecting gaze data. Initially, we utilized the traditional approach to delineate the area of interest, analyzing variations in pupil diameter, gaze positions, and the duration spent in each area throughout the driving task, thereby compiling statistics on drivers’ gaze patterns. Subsequently, harnessing the You Only Look Once version 5 architecture, we can precisely identify the position of vehicles and obstacles from the captured images. Enhancements to the network model—including streamlining and integrating an attention mechanism—have significantly refined target detection accuracy. In the final analysis, by correlating drivers’ gaze data with the positional information of upcoming obstacles, we can accurately assess where drivers are looking. This fusion of data allows for a more nuanced observation of gaze dispersion and position within a one-second timeframe, providing valuable insights into drivers’ attention distribution and driving behaviors.

Optimized design of large-diameter directly buried heating pipe

Abstract The elbow of a large-diameter directly buried hot water heating pipeline is the weak part of the whole pipe system. The foam cushion is often used to reduce the stress on the elbow. However, the foam cushion raises the temperature on the outer protective pipe’s surface, which may trigger thermal stress damage to the pipes. In this paper, the insulating pipe at the elbow section is designed with a variable diameter. The numerical simulation of the thermal stress for the outer protective pipe and the working pipe was conducted. The maximum stress for the outer protective pipe is about 3 MPa, and the average stress for the working pipe is 83 MPa, much smaller than the yield stress. Combined with the simulation results, the design ensures the reliability of the elbow and provides a reference for the design of large-diameter and high-temperature heat transfer pipelines.

Analyzing the influence of dimensions of the body behind the cavitator on ventilated cavitation

Investigating the impact of various parameters on the characteristics of supercavitation is an essential and continuously evolving matter. In the current study, the influence of the geometry behind the cavitator on the characteristics of ventilation supercavitation at different Froude numbers and at a constant ventilation coefficient has been investigated. For this purpose, at first, by using the experimental method on a model with a disk cavitator at different Froude numbers, the ventilation cavitation has been investigated and the appropriate numerical method has been validated based on the experimental results. Next, using the numerical method, the effect of filling the cavity volume by geometry with different dimensions and confined inside the cavity on the characteristics of the ventilated supercavity was investigated. Also, the geometry with unlimited length and variable diameter was investigated in order to determine the effect of increasing the diameter on the characteristics of the cavity. The results indicate that increasing the volume of the aft body confined within the supercavity does not have a significant effect on its characteristics. However, increasing the diameter of the aft body caused a significant reduction in the length of the supercavity for the geometry with an infinite body length.
