1. 1. Worker bees of Trigona atripes, T. collina, T. fuscibasis and T. rufibasalis from Peninsular Malaysia were analyzed at 17 enzyme loci using starch-gel electrophoresis. 2. 2. Aldolase, hexokinase, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase were invariant in all four species; esterase, lactate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme and phosphoglucomutase showed interspecific variation; while glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose phosphate isomerase, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase exhibited both intraspecific and interspecific variation. 3. 3. The proportion of polymorphic loci ranged from 12 to 18%, while the average heterozygosity ranged from 0.02 to 0.08. 4. 4. The four component taxa of the T. atripes species group could be unequivocally separated from one another. 5. 5. The genetic identity values indicate closest affinity between T. collina and T. rufibasalis (I = 0.76), followed by T. fuscibasis (I = 0.70) and T. atripes (I = 0.62).
