Design Of Dynamic System Simulation Model Of Trash Bin Production Process at Harapan Mulya Putri Company

Harapan Mulya Putri is a manufacturing company established in 2010. This company produces equipment for cleaning or cleaning tools, hotel equipment, restaurant equipment, household equipment, and traffic signs. Problems encountered by Harapan Mulya Putri company that the number of stainless steel trash backorders will reach 28% in 3 months. This study aims to reduce the number of back orders in the production process of stainless steel trash bins. Reducing the number of back orders is done by designing a simulation model of stainless steel trash bin production. The method used is a dynamic system simulation. Three scenarios are used to maximize the fulfillment of consumer demand. The first scenario is a policy of adding raw materials suppliers send, such as 150 units of stainless steel plates. The simulation results for the first scenario resulted in a 75% decrease in back orders. The second scenario is ordering based on the bill of material grouping to optimize raw material utilization. The simulation results of the second scenario reduced back orders by 56.25%. The third policy scenario is combined with the first and second scenarios. The results of the third simulation show that back orders have decreased by 87.5%. Thus, the selected scenario is the third scenario.

Controlled Interfacial Tailoring of Hierarchical Silicon Synergizes Charge Transport Enabling Stable and Fast Lithium Storage.

Silicon is a promising anode material candidate but encounters volume change and capacity decay issues. Although diverse demonstrations in structural and interfacial engineering, the performance toward industrial applications remains to be improved. Herein, a controlled interfacial tailoring strategy is proposed for micro-nano hierarchically structured silicon. The resultant granules, consisting of randomly interconnected silicon debris modified by an electrically conductive carbon layer and a superionic sulfide conductor specifically in a controlled form (nanoparticles, coats, and matrices), attain distinctly different cyclic performances. As the carbon coating generally provides electron transfer paths for silicon, the introduced fast ion conductor exhibits a strong correlation with its configuration in facilitating ion transportation as well as improving the materials utilization and cyclic stability. Impressively, the granules encapsulated with a fast ion conductor layer show remarkably improved cycling performance and rate capability, attributable to a decent synergy of transmitting both electrons and lithium ions throughout the granule.

Optimizing the corrosion resistance of additive manufacturing TC4 titanium alloy in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis anodic environment

Titanium alloys are commonly used as the bipolar plate material in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, traditional machining methods are difficult to process titanium alloy parts, which further increases the cost of bipolar plates. The wire-arc directed energy deposition (WA-DED) additive manufacturing (AM) technology is low cost and high utilization of material. However, the undesirable microstructure always restricts the performance improvement. In this work, the electrochemical corrosion and passive characteristics of wrought TC4 and WA-DED AM TC4 alloys in the simulated PEMWE anode environment were investigated. The microstructure of AM TC4 alloy was optimized and the corrosion resistance was enhanced by heat treatment. The results indicate that the corrosion resistance of AM TC4 alloy is better than wrought TC4 alloy, and appropriate heat treatment can further improve the stability of passive film. Compared to wrought TC4, Ti −β phase fraction of AM TC4 decreased from 9.6 % to 1.3 %, and the heat treatment further reduced Ti −β phase fraction of AM TC4-850 and AM TC4-1050 alloys to 0.8 % and 0.1 %. The passive film thickness of wrought TC4, AM TC4, AM TC4-850, and AM TC4-1050 alloys calculated with the Power-Law model were 0.5 nm, 1.76 nm, 1.94 nm, and 2.02 nm, respectively. After heat treatment of 1050 °C, AM TC4-1050 alloy exhibited the best corrosion resistance, showing the lowest corrosion current density of 54 μA/cm2 and the lowest passive current density of 19.5 μA/cm2. Moreover, Ti oxide contributed most to the composition of passive film. In AM TC4-1050 alloy, the percentage of Ti oxides was 80.9 %, showing the best corrosion resistance.

Numerical simulation study on discharge characteristics of the Dual hollow cathode plasma source using magnetic mirror field

The Dual hollow cathode plasma source uses hollow cathode cylindrical sputtering and ionizing metal elements, which has a high material utilization rate and has potential application in the field of material modification. Its performance index requires the cooperation of electrode discharge parameters and the rational utilization of the inner surface of the hollow cathode. In this paper, a two-dimensional fluid model of a Dual hollow cathode structure is developed to simulate the basic distribution of the Dual hollow cathode discharge, which fills the central region of the Dual hollow cathode structure and the electrons oscillate on the axis. The effects of electrode parameters and hollow cathode radius on the discharge were investigated. The results show that the radial electron density of the hollow cathode increases with increasing heated cathode voltage, but as the hot cathode voltage continues to expand beyond 1200 V this trend becomes less obvious. The enhancement of the wall ion current by the heated cathode voltage is very pronounced, and the hollow cathode discharge is the result of the mutual enhancement of the heated cathode voltage and the hollow cathode voltage. Hollow cathode sputtering needs to reach a voltage threshold of 300 V, and the existence of an optimal radius (r = 4 mm−6 mm) to achieve a high plasma density and at the same time favor hollow cathode sputtering.

Impacts of thermal activation on lunar regolith simulant-based precursor and resulting geopolymer: Composition, structure, solubility, and reactivity

Alkali activation presents a promising method for the in situ resource utilization (ISRU) of lunar regolith. Enhancing the geopolymerization reactivity of lunar regolith simulant is key in minimizing alkali activator usage and improving raw material utilization. This study investigates the impact of thermal activation on precursor materials and the resultant geopolymers. Initially, the mineralogical composition and chemical structural changes in thermally activated samples were analyzed using XRD-Rietveld, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. Subsequently, ICP-OES was employed to measure the solubility of various thermally activated samples in NaOH solution. Finally, the physicochemical composition and microstructure of the geopolymers were evaluated using SEM-EDS, FTIR, DSC, and compressive strength tests. The results show that thermal activation enhances precursor reactivity by increasing the non-bridging oxygen (NBO) content, reducing polymerization, and altering the binding energies of Si, Al, and O. Following thermal activation, the solubility of Si and Al in the NaOH solution was significantly improved. A more comprehensive thermal activation process produces geopolymers with improved compressive strength, a higher reaction degree, and a denser microstructure, and encourages the formation of Si-rich gels. Hence, treating precursor materials via thermal activation offers vast potential for creating lunar regolith geopolymer-based building materials with excellent properties.

Evaluating priority strategies for decarbonising offshore wind turbine blades through lifecycle assessment

Abstract While offshore wind is at the early stage of expansion, global capacity is expected to increase rapidly, reaching 330 GW by 2031. This work uses lifecycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the opportunity for offshore wind energy decarbonisation through wind blade sustainable developments. The findings from the LCA are used to give informed recommendations towards priority areas of development across the blade lifecycle, that are critical to accelerate the sector’s transition towards net-zero targets. The production of raw materials was found to be the largest contributor to cradle-to-gave global warming potential (GWP). The sector should prioritise the utilisation of more sustainable materials, with an emphasis on the decarbonisation of carbon fibre production. Waste produced during blade manufacturing alone accounts for 10% of the blade’s GWP; therefore, increasing the material efficiency in this phase of the lifecycle is a significant opportunity for blade decarbonisation and should be a focus for the sector going forward. O&M was found to be the second largest contributor to GWP, with full decarbonisation of O&M practices potentially realising an 8% reduction in GWP. A range of alterative blade material scenarios were analysed, finding that recyclable resin systems have the greatest potential to decarbonise offshore blades. There are currently no commercial recycling operations for these resins therefore scale up of the recycling technologies is needed before they can be recycled in practice. Additionally, the development of low impact, economically viable circular solutions for legacy blade waste must be an immediate priority for the wind energy sector, given the anticipated exponential growth in global wind turbine blade waste generation. Wood and Wood-Based Materials in Space Applications—A Literature Review of Use Cases, Challenges and Potential

Current political and sociological efforts to respond to the need for more environmentally friendly technologies have inspired a revival of wood and wood-based material utilization in space systems. The popularity of these materials has faded since their widespread use in the early days of aerospace engineering. This work reviews the literature to provide an overview of use cases, the motivation for using wood and wood-based materials and the challenges involved. A small number of applications were identified in which wood and wood-based materials were preferred over non-renewable raw materials. They are mainly applied for less-stressed disposable components or as a thermal protection material. It can be shown that the applied wooden materials have advantages such as low production costs, easy availability, easy and environment-friendly decomposition and low weight. However, only a limited number of applications have achieved a high level of technological readiness so far. Properties such as anisotropy and a lack of uniformity, defects in wood, the quantity available material and a lack of standards for the certification of wooden materials represent challenges. These are addressed in the current research, which additionally focuses on sustainable growth, enhanced environmental friendliness and advanced lightweight design.

Value adding bioconversion of residues and byproducts—a logistics challenge

AbstractGlobal developments such as climate change, a growing world population and the depletion of fossil resources make the sustainable use of biogenic resources in chemical production inevitable. This would also provide a final product with a higher added value than just utilizing the raw materials for applications in energy generation. In recent years, many researchers have shown that e.g., grass clippings, carrots and potato peels can be biotechnologically converted into high-value chemicals thereby increasing resource efficiency. A particular challenge, however, is the decentralized production of such biogenic raw materials as well as degradation affecting the composition and quality within short periods of time. Therefore, appropriate logistics concepts must be developed and evaluated to economically valorize biogenic raw materials. Such concepts differ significantly in terms of material utilization for the production of chemicals, composting or energetic valorization. This overview presents relevant examples of the conversion of biogenic residues into chemicals investigating basic logistic concepts and highlighting major challenges along bio-based value chains.

Adsorption Removal of Organophosphates from Water by Steel Slag: Modification, Performance, and Energy Site Analysis

Organophosphates are a type of emerging environmental contaminant, which can be removed effectively by adsorption. Here, modified steel slag was examined for its adsorptive performance in the removal of hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) from water. Compared to acid (55.3%, maximum removal rate) and base (85.5%) modification, high-temperature modification (90.6%) significantly enhanced steel slag’s adsorption capacity for HEDP, surpassing that of unmodified slag (71.2%). Kinetic analyses elucidated a two-phase adsorption process—initial rapid adsorption followed by a slower equilibrium phase. The results of adsorption energy analysis showed that modified steel slag preferentially occupied the sites with higher energy, which promoted the adsorption. After five regeneration cycles, the adsorption properties of the material were not significantly reduced, which indicates that the material has good application potential. Microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, including SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS, were employed to uncover the surface chemistry and structural changes responsible for the enhanced adsorption efficiency. The adsorption mechanism of HEDP on steel slag is a complete process guided by hydrogen bonding interactions, strengthened surface complexation, and optimized ligand exchange. This study advances the sustainable utilization of industrial waste materials and contributes significantly to the development of innovative water treatment technologies.

Theoretical Study of the Magnetic Mechanism of a Pca21 C4N3 Monolayer and the Regulation of Its Magnetism by Gas Adsorption.

For metal-free low-dimensional ferromagnetic materials, a hopeful candidate for next-generation spintronic devices, investigating their magnetic mechanisms and exploring effective ways to regulate their magnetic properties are crucial for advancing their applications. Our work systematically investigated the origin of magnetism of a graphitic carbon nitride (Pca21 C4N3) monolayer based on the analysis on the partial electronic density of states. The magnetic moment of the Pca21 C4N3 originates from the spin-split of the 2pz orbit from special carbon (C) atoms and 2p orbit from N atoms around the Fermi energy, which was caused by the lone pair electrons in nitrogen (N) atoms. Notably, the magnetic moment of the Pca21 C4N3 monolayer could be effectively adjusted by adsorbing nitric oxide (NO) or oxygen (O2) gas molecules. The single magnetic electron from the adsorbed NO pairs with the unpaired electron in the N atom from the substrate, forming a Nsub-Nad bond, which reduces the system's magnetic moment from 4.00 μB to 2.99 μB. Moreover, the NO adsorption decreases the both spin-down and spin-up bandgaps, causing an increase in photoelectrical response efficiency. As for the case of O2 physisorption, it greatly enhances the magnetic moment of the Pca21 C4N3 monolayer from 4.00 μB to 6.00 μB through ferromagnetic coupling. This method of gas adsorption for tuning magnetic moments is reversible, simple, and cost-effective. Our findings reveal the magnetic mechanism of Pca21 C4N3 and its tunable magnetic performance realized by chemisorbing or physisorbing magnetic gas molecules, providing crucial theoretical foundations for the development and utilization of low-dimensional magnetic materials.

Stable Dendrite‐Free Room Temperature Sodium‐Sulfur Batteries Enabled by a Novel Sodium Thiotellurate Interface

AbstractThe practical application of room‐temperature sodium‐sulfur (RT Na−S) batteries is severely hindered by inhomogeneous sodium deposition and notorious sodium polysulfides (NaPSs) shuttling. Herein, novel sodium thiotellurate (Na2TeS3) interfaces are constructed both on the cathode and anode for Na−S batteries to simultaneously address the Na dendritic growth and polysulfides shuttling. On the cathode side, a heterostructural sodium sulfide/sodium telluride embedded in a carbon matrix (Na2S/Na2Te@C) is rationally designed through a facile carbothermal reaction, where the Na2TeS3 interface will be in situ chemically obtained. Such an interface provides abundant electron/ion diffusion channels and ensures rich catalytic surfaces toward Na−S redox, which could significantly improve the utilization of active material and alleviate polysulfides shuttling in the cathode. On the anode side, the inevitable formation of soluble polytellurosulfides species will migrate on Na anode surface, finally constructing a compact and smooth solid‐electrolyte Na2TeS3 interphase (SEI) layer. Such electrochemical formed Na2TeS3 interface can significantly enhance ionic transport and stabilize Na deposition, thus realizing dendrite‐free Na‐metal plating/stripping. Benefitting from these advantages, an anode‐free cell fabricated with the Na2S/Na2Te@C cathode exhibits an ultrahigh initial discharge capacity of 634 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, which could pave a new path to design high‐performance cathodes for anode‐free RT Na−S batteries.

Examining the challenges impeding the utilization of construction materials with lower embodied carbon in the construction sector

ABSTRACT This paper aimed at determining the barriers preventing the extensive utilization of innovative materials in the construction sector. As a way of providing clear understanding of the complex interrelationship between the barriers, the literature review was supplemented by an expert-based survey to determine the barriers, whereas the hierarchical structure between the barriers was analyzed using the interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach. Based on the outcome of the level partitioning of the ISM approach, it was found out that “reluctance to take responsibility for embodied carbon reduction (B14) was partitioned at the 8th level indicating that it is the most highly prioritized barrier considered to be the most crucial in preventing the use of low-carbon building materials in the construction industry. The paper produces vital knowledge and evidence that could be applied to encourage more sustainable construction practices by the wide adoption of alternative construction materials with lower embodied carbon in the construction sector. The implications inferred based on the findings of this paper seek to suggest remedies, strategies, and actions that could help to overcome the undesirable impact of the barriers that affect the utilization of low-carbon building materials, particularly amongst prominent stakeholders of construction projects.

Investigating the thermal performance of a pipe-encapsulated movable PCM wall and its impact on reducing indoor heat gain during summer

The utilization of phase change materials (PCM) in building envelopes is considered to be an effective technology for reducing energy consumption during building operations. In this study, a novel approach is presented for integrating PCM into walls by encapsulating it using pipes, allowing for its mobility through the use of compressed air. Four experimentally validated thermal models, pipe-encapsulated movable PCM (PEM-PCM) wall (Model 1), wall with PCM fixed to the exterior (Model 2), wall with PCM fixed to the interior (Model 3), and wall without PCM (Model 4), were proposed to compare their energy efficiency in summer. Different upper threshold limits (Ttr,up) and lower threshold limits (Ttr,low) were employed to explore the impact of various threshold combinations control strategies on the thermal performance of the wall. The results show that the most effective operating scheme is Ttr,up of 27 °C and Ttr,low of 25 °C. In terms of long-term operation, cumulative summer indoor heat gain of Model 1 is 10.65 %, 10.85 % and 11.4% lower than that of Model 2,3 and 4. Notably, September demonstrates the greatest potential for energy savings, with Model 1 reducing the monthly cumulative indoor heat gain by 54.12% compared to Model 4.

Microstomia- A Review Of Published Case Reports On The Proposed Management Of Microstomia

Introdcution: microstomia, or the reduction of oral opening, can indeed present challenges for patients across various contexts, from eating and speech to prosthetic treatment. It's essential for clinicians to understand the underlying causes and tailor their approach accordingly. By synthesizing existing evidence, this review aims to provide insights into the effectiveness and feasibility of different prosthetic interventions, thereby guiding clinicians in their decision-making process for optimal patient care. Materials and methods: published case reports and case series reporting on prosthetic rehabilitation of microstomia patients were included in the present review. Only cases with a reduction in the size of the oral aperture were included, and cases with reduced mouth opening with a normal oral aperture (e.g., oral submucous fibrosis, temporal-mandibular joint ankylosis, etc.) Were excluded. Case reports: (case report1) a 93-year-old woman without teeth was referred from the local hospital to the department of oral rehabilitation at the faculty of dentistry, university of otago, dunedin, new zealand. The woman's surgeries on her lower lip resulted in a significant reduction in the vertical opening distance between her upper and lower lips, now at 30 mm. This condition, known as microstomia. (case report 2) a 62-year-old male patient, completely without teeth, presented to the prosthodontic department due to functional difficulties. Discussion: a planned and step-by-step approach is crucial when dealing with cases of microstomia. The outcome greatly depends on the complexity of the case and the utilization of recommended materials and equipment hence, diagnosis and treatment planning play pivotal roles in the management process. Conclusion: although the utilization of flexible denture materials holds promise in enhancing patient comfort and treatment outcomes, further research is warranted to evaluate their long-term success rates. Longitudinal studies can furnish valuable insights into the durability, stability, and overall performance of these materials over time, assisting clinicians in decision-making and optimizing patient care.

Sequential bioaugmentation of the dominant microorganisms to improve the fermentation and flavor of cereal vinegar

Traditional cereal vinegars are fermented by microorganisms that are spontaneously enriched, leading to uncertainty in regulating the fermentation process and flavor. The objective of this study was to elucidate the impact of the predominant microorganisms, provenly Lactobacillus helveticus and Acetobacter pasteurianus, on the solid-state fermentation (SSF) and flavor profile of cereal vinegar by several bioaugmentation strategies. The results indicated that the sequential bioaugmentation of predominant microorganisms improved the utilization of raw material and most key flavor compounds. Through sequential bioaugmentation strategy, bacterial diversity was regulated due to minimizing acetic acid inhibition in the early stages, and the non-volatile acid was targetedly improved by Lactobacillus. Furthermore, the important flavor of non-volatile acid, esters, acetoin, and tetramethyl-pyrazine content was enhanced by sequential bioaugmentation. Therefore, the sensory score on taste and odor were improved. These results provide a reference for the targeted regulation of the SSF and the flavor quality of cereal vinegar.

Towards sustainable electronics: High-performance biodegradable polymer-based dielectric composite utilizing hydroxyapatite from cattle bone waste

Polymer-based film capacitors find widespread use in electronics and electrical systems, but the utilization of non-biodegradable dielectric materials contributes to excessive electronic waste. To address this issue, a biodegradable composite of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) was prepared and extensively characterized. HAp, as a filler, was synthesized via biomass-derived bone waste pyrolysis. The analyses confirmed successful HAp synthesis with high crystallinity and well-defined grain boundaries, which promote interfacial polarization and charge storage capability. The composite exhibited remarkable dielectric properties, with high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and good breakdown strength at low filler content. The PBAT/HAp-3 % composite showed significant energy storage density improvement (3.56 J/cm3), 43.55 % higher than pure PBAT (2.48 J/cm3), alongside enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability. This study presents a cost-effective, eco-friendly route for next-generation high-performance disposable electronics.

Suppressing high voltage chemo-mechanical degradation in single crystal nickel-rich cathodes for high-performance all-solid-state lithium batteries

Sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (SASSLBs) suffer from electrochemo.mechanical damage to Ni-rich oxide-based cathode active materials (CAMs), primarilycaused by severe volume changes, results in significant stress and strain cuase micro-cracks, and interfacial contact loss at potentials > 4.3 V(vs. Li/Li+). Quantifying micro-cracks and voids in cathode active materials (CAMs) can reveal the degradation mechanisms of Ni-rich oxide-based cathodes during electrochemical cycling. Nonetheless, the origin of electrochemical-mechanical damage remains unclear. Herein, We have developed a multifunctional PEG-based soft buffer layer (SBL) on the surface of carbon black (CB). This layer functions as a percolation network in the single crystal LiNi0.83Co0.07Mn0.1O2 and Li6PS5Cl composite cathode layer, ensuring superior ionic conductivity, reducing void formation and particle cracking, and promoting uniform utilization of the cathode active material in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). STEM-HAADF combined with nanoscale X-ray holo-tomography and plasma-focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the PEG-based SBL mitigated strain induced by reaction heterogeneity in the cathode. This strain produces lattice stretches, distortions, and the formation of curved transition metal oxide layers near the surface, contributing to structural degradation at elevated voltages. Consequently, ASSLBs with a LiNi0.83Co0.07Mn0.1O2 cathode containing LCCB-10 (CB/PEG mass ratio: 100/10) demonstrate a high areal capacity (2.53 mAh g–1/0.32 mA g–1) and remarkable rate capability (0.58 mAh g–1 at 1.4 mA g–1), with 88% capacity retention over 1000 cycles.

3D-printed Bio-inspired porous electrode by bidirectional enhancement strategy with high mass loading and enhanced energy density for supercapacitors

The effective strategy for increasing areal capacity involves the use of 3D printed thick-electrode with high mass loading. However, thick-electrode still encounters challenges such as incomplete electrolyte penetration and slow ion transport. Here, we successfully prepared lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNFs) from abundant bamboo biomass and developed functional ink composed of LCNFs/ carbon nanotubes (CNTs) / polyaniline (PANI) / polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for printing. An innovative 3D printing bidirectional enhancement strategy was proposed to increase the mass loading of active materials in the vertical direction and construct ion transport channels in the transverse direction. The biomimetic porous N-doped electrode obtained after annealing treatment exhibits a more continuous conductive network, larger surface area, higher utilization of active materials, and smoother ion transport pathways compared to thick-electrode. Therefore, the Triangles biomimetic electrode exhibits an enhanced areal/specific capacitance compared to thick-electrode, reaching 5.30F·cm−2 (184.03F·g−1) and 4.40F·cm−2 (122.22F·g−1) at 2 mA·cm−2, respectively. The symmetric device demonstrates an areal capacitance of 1.34F·cm−2 at 1 mA·cm−2 and achieves an energy density of 0.186 mWh·cm−2 at a power density of 0.49 mW·cm−2. The work provides valuable insights into the design of electrode structures for high-performance supercapacitors.

Transcriptomics-guided rational engineering in Bacillus licheniformis for enhancing poly-γ-glutamic acid biosynthesis using untreated molasses

The utilization of non-food raw materials for microbial synthesis of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) presents a promising alternative to conventional food-based biosynthesis. However, the complex carbon source and composition of molasses, a prevalent non-food raw material, may impose constraints on its conversion and utilization by microorganisms. This study aimed to enhance the capacity of Bacillus licheniformis to convert untreated molasses into γ-PGA through transcriptomic analysis to guide metabolic modifications. Initial results from the transcriptomic analysis indicated that the strain utilizing molasses exhibited decreased expression of genes associated with substrate utilization (Module 1) and by-product synthesis (Module 2), while upregulating genes related to precursor synthesis (Module 3). Furthermore, we performed a knockout of the acetolactate synthase (AlsS) to reduce the synthesis of metabolic by-products and a knockout of the global regulator (CcpA) to alleviate carbon catabolite repression (CCR) and then promote substrate utilization. Ultimately, following the tandem overexpression of precursor supplying key genes, the titer of γ-PGA reached 48.26 g/L with a productivity of 1.15 g/L/h, using untreated molasses as the sole carbon source, which was 3.12-fold of the starting strain. These findings offer significant insights into the cost-effective synthesis of γ-PGA by bioconversion of untreated molasses during fermentation.

Enhancing the bending strength, load-carrying capacity and material efficiency of aspen and black alder plywood through thermo-mechanical densification of face veneers

Many research papers highlight the positive impact of wood densification on mechanical properties of solid wood as well as wood veneers. Previous experimental studies comparing densified to non-densified wood materials of the same thickness consistently demonstrated higher strength properties in bending for densified materials. However, these studies often overlooked an important comparison: the strength and load-carrying capacity of non-densified wood material to its densified state, in which the thickness is reduced and thus the material’s moment of inertia. The current study, aims to address this gap for plywood made from low-quality, underutilized hardwood species, encompassing both non-densified and densified veneers. Additionally, these plywood panels are compared with high-quality birch plywood. Plywood samples made from common aspen (Populus tremula L.) and black alder (Alnus glutinosa L.) species, incorporating densified veneers, are compared to conventional silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) plywood. The study also considers material utilization efficiency. Results showed that plywood made from non-densified aspen and black alder veneers exhibited comparable strength to standard birch plywood, positioning them as competitive alternatives to high-quality wood species. While densified black alder veneers increased strength in average from 83.6 MPa to 126.3 MPa, a loss in load-carrying capacity was observed from 1930 N to 1637 N due to reduced thickness and moment of inertia.
