An Advance Learning Platform for Slow Learners

From explainable to interactive AI: A literature review on current trends in human-AI interaction

AI systems are increasingly being adopted across various domains and application areas. With this surge, there is a growing research focus and societal concern for actively involving humans in developing, operating, and adopting these systems. Despite this concern, most existing literature on AI and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) primarily focuses on explaining how AI systems operate and, at times, allowing users to contest AI decisions. Existing studies often overlook more impactful forms of user interaction with AI systems, such as giving users agency beyond contestability and enabling them to adapt and even co-design the AI’s internal mechanics. In this survey, we aim to bridge this gap by reviewing the state-of-the-art in Human-Centered AI literature, the domain where AI and HCI studies converge, extending past Explainable and Contestable AI, delving into the Interactive AI and beyond. Our analysis contributes to shaping the trajectory of future Interactive AI design and advocates for a more user-centric approach that provides users with greater agency, fostering not only their understanding of AI’s workings but also their active engagement in its development and evolution.

Developing feedback visualizations to support older adults’ medication adherence

BackgroundBlood pressure control is critical for older adults because the prevalence of hypertension and resulting cardiovascular illness increases with age. Antihypertension medications are central to blood pressure treatment. However, nonadherence to antihypertension medications is high. Health technology such as smartphone apps provide an opportunity for users to manage their medication regimen and support processes related to medication-taking. ObjectiveWe implemented a user-centered evaluation approach to develop and refine adherence feedback visualizations for the MEDSReM© medication adherence app for older adults with hypertension. MethodsWe conducted a literature review and iterative usability testing to achieve this objective. We identified adherence goals, information needs, as well as design guidelines by reviewing theoretical frameworks and existing scientific evidence. We then used a two-phase iterative user-centered study and subject matter expert evaluation. Both quantitative and qualitative data were used to select and improve the current prototype and evolve to the next prototype. ResultsThe need for daily, weekly, and monthly adherence performance information as well as visualization formats for conveying this information was identified from the literature review. Overall, the information shown in visualization prototypes was successfully interpreted by participants. Comprehension issues of visualizations were identified and addressed from visual prototype revisions. Insights from both user and subject matter expert groups were used to select and refine the prototypes for the MEDSReM app. ConclusionEvidence-based and user-centered approaches were effective for developing visualizations about adherence performance feedback in the MEDSReM app and provided insight into how the app can be made easy to understand and use by older adults with hypertension, which will be evaluated in future effectiveness testing.

UK Cystic Fibrosis Registry Website Enhancements: A User-Centred Approach to the Data Access Transparency

BackgroundAs a member of the HDR UK Alliance, Cystic Fibrosis Trust is committed to adopting and maintaining the transparency standards within the UK CF Registry (UKCFR). Our website is the primary source for providing information on UKCFR and data access processes. We aimed to review use and accessibility across all user groups to shape website enhancements. This project aimed to improve transparency by conducting user experience (UX) research, and based on user feedback, enhance our website. For this project, we reviewed all of the HDR UK Transparency Standards. For this poster, we will focus on Standards 3 (Clear Website Navigation and 4 (Consider Target Audience). IntroductionThe primary objective was to enhance Transparency Standards by understanding audience needs and customise website improvements based on their needs. We envisaged that the outcome would be an improved and streamlined data access process to support transparency and trust among both data applicants and the public. MethodsWe employed a multi-method approach which incorporates public involvement throughout the whole process. We conducted on-site polls to intercept website visitors and gather quick feedback during their visit. Additionally, we created and distributed targeted surveys to various groups, including public and CF professionals, to delve deeper into their website experiences. Results The website’s overall rating is high at 7.4/10. UX research respondents: public 57% public and 43% CF Professionals. The top reasons for visiting the website are accessing reports and statistics and finding out more about UK CF Registry. Ease of finding information has fairly even spread, indicating room for improvement.

CareerBoost: Revolutionizing the Job Search with Resume Enhancement and Tailored Recommendations

The Resume Enhancer and Job Recommendation System is designed to meet the unique challenges faced by job seekers in today's dynamic job market. Leveraging cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) techniques, the present system provides a tailored solution to streamline the job search process. The present Resume Enhancer component utilizes advanced NLP algorithms to analyse resumes and job descriptions, generating comprehensive eligibility scores and targeted skill recommendations. This ensures that candidates' resumes are optimized to effectively showcase their qualifications and expertise to potential employers. The present Job Recommendation feature delivers personalized job listings tailored to each user's selected roles or career aspirations. The authors implemented machine learning algorithms such as the Random Forest Classifier and K-means Clustering, the system matches candidate preferences and qualifications with relevant job opportunities, increasing the likelihood of finding the perfect fit. Overall, the Resume Enhancer and Job Recommendation System serves as a valuable tool for job seekers, empowering them to navigate the complexities of the modern job market with confidence. With its user-centric approach and advanced technology, the present system enhances employability and facilitates career growth for individuals at every stage of their professional journey.

Specification of Self-Adaptive Privacy-Related Requirements within Cloud Computing Environments (CCE).

This paper presents a novel approach to address the challenges of self-adaptive privacy in cloud computing environments (CCE). Under the Cloud-InSPiRe project, the aim is to provide an interdisciplinary framework and a beta-version tool for self-adaptive privacy design, effectively focusing on the integration of technical measures with social needs. To address that, a pilot taxonomy that aligns technical, infrastructural, and social requirements is proposed after two supplementary surveys that have been conducted, focusing on users' privacy needs and developers' perspectives on self-adaptive privacy. Through the integration of users' social identity-based practices and developers' insights, the taxonomy aims to provide clear guidance for developers, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and fostering a user-centric approach to self-adaptive privacy design tailored to diverse user groups, ultimately enhancing satisfaction and confidence in cloud services.

Analysis and design framework for the development of indoor scene understanding assistive solutions for the person with visual impairment/blindness

This paper discusses the challenges of the current state of computer vision-based indoor scene understanding assistive solutions for the person with visual impairment (P-VI)/blindness. It focuses on two main issues: the lack of user-centered approach in the development process and the lack of guidelines for the selection of appropriate technologies. First, it discusses the needs of users of an assistive solution through state-of-the-art analysis based on a previous systematic review of literature and commercial products and on semi-structured user interviews. Then it proposes an analysis and design framework to address these needs. Our paper presents a set of structured use cases that help to visualize and categorize the diverse real-world challenges faced by the P-VI/blindness in indoor settings, including scene description, object finding, color detection, obstacle avoidance and text reading across different contexts. Next, it details the functional and non-functional requirements to be fulfilled by indoor scene understanding assistive solutions and provides a reference architecture that helps to map the needs into solutions, identifying the components that are necessary to cover the different use cases and respond to the requirements. To further guide the development of the architecture components, the paper offers insights into various available technologies like depth cameras, object detection, segmentation algorithms and optical character recognition (OCR), to enable an informed selection of the most suitable technologies for the development of specific assistive solutions, based on aspects like effectiveness, price and computational cost. In conclusion, by systematically analyzing user needs and providing guidelines for technology selection, this research contributes to the development of more personalized and practical assistive solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by the P-VI/blindness.

User-centered circular value propositions – approaches in practice and research

Circular value propositions enable companies to build business models based on value preservation and circular resource flows. Circular value propositions also allow people to live more sustainably by facilitating increased utilization and resource efficiency. However, despite potential, transitions to circular business models remain low. One reason may be that circular value propositions are less attractive because they are often not developed with a user-centered approach and thus fail to meet people's everyday needs. Through interviews with 13 companies and a literature study, this paper explores how companies consider user needs and involve users during development of circular value propositions. It also identifies conditions and actions that aid development of attractive circular offers. The findings are synthesized in a framework describing six enabling conditions and a definition of user-centered circular value propositions useful for circular economy practice and research.

Teaching prudent antibiotic use on the go: a descriptive report on development, utilization and listener satisfaction of an educational podcast format for medical students and young professionals

BackgroundAn important component in fostering the responsible use of antibiotics is training of new and future prescribers in this interdisciplinary topic. Because podcasts are playing an increasing role in medical education, we aimed to develop and evaluate a podcast format with practice and guideline-oriented learning content on antibiotic therapy for medical students and young medical professionals.MethodsWe developed the concept for the podcast with the direct involvement of medical students and medical experts with teaching experience. We used video conferencing when recording the episodes in order to have quick, easy, and nationwide access to the experts involved. We released an episode every 2 to 4 weeks on the popular podcast platforms. The podcast was promoted through mailing lists, social and print media, and at conferences. The evaluation of episodes was based on user data provided by the platforms and an anonymous feedback questionnaire linked to each episode in the podcast notes.ResultsBetween December 2021 and December 2022 19 episodes of InfectEd: der Antibiotika-Podcast were released. The mean duration of an episode was 91 min. By March 9, 2023, a total of 38,829 downloads and streams had been recorded. The majority of users listened to the podcast on a mobile device. The average playing time per episode was 65%. The feedback questionnaire was completed 135 times. 60.7% of respondents were female, 38.5% male. The majority of respondents were in their twenties and thirties (66.7%). 31.1% were medical students, 25.9% were residents, and 25.2% were specialists. Listeners were asked to rate episodes on a scale from 1 to 6, where 1 was “very good” and 6 was “insufficient.” Ratings did not differ significantly between female and male respondents or between medical students and others. 118 respondents (87.4%) reported an increase in knowledge. Free-text feedback frequently emphasized clinical and also exam relevance.ConclusionOur podcast format, developed with a user-centered approach, was broadly distributed and has been well accepted by both medical students and physicians alike. It provides a large number of learners with low-threshold access to current, guideline-orientated content and could be a useful supplement to conventional teaching formats.

Development and Usability Evaluation of VulcanH, a CMMS Prototype for Preventive and Predictive Maintenance of Mobile Mining Equipment

This paper details the design, development, and evaluation of VulcanH, a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) specialized in preventive maintenance (PM) and predictive maintenance (PdM) management for underground mobile mining equipment. Further, it aims to expand knowledge on trust in automation (TiA) for PdM as well as contribute to the literature on explainability requirements of a PdM-capable artificial intelligence (AI). This study adopted an empirical approach through the execution of user tests with nine maintenance experts from five East-Canadian mines and implemented the User Experience Questionnaire Plus (UEQ+) and the Reliance Intentions Scale (RIS) to evaluate usability and TiA, respectively. It was found that the usability and efficiency of VulcanH were satisfactory for expert users and encouraged the gradual transition from PM to PdM practices. Quantitative and qualitative results documented participants’ willingness to rely on PdM predictions as long as suitable explanations are provided. Graphical explanations covering the full spectrum of the derived data were preferred. Due to the prototypical nature of VulcanH, certain relevant aspects of maintenance planning were not considered. Researchers are encouraged to include these notions in the evaluation of future CMMS proposals. This paper suggests a harmonious integration of both preventive and predictive maintenance practices in the mining industry. It may also guide future research in PdM to select an analytical algorithm capable of supplying adequate and causal justifications for informed decision making. This study fulfills an identified need to adopt a user-centered approach in the development of CMMSs in the mining industry. Hence, both researchers and industry stakeholders may benefit from the findings.

Shared decision making for patients with kidney failure to improve end-of-life care: Development of the DESIRE intervention.

To describe the development of a shared decision making intervention for planning end-of-life care for patients with kidney failure, their relatives and health professionals in kidney services. End-of-life care conversations within standard disease management consultations are challenging for patients with kidney failure, their relatives and health professionals. End-of-life care planning is about making difficult decisions in advance, which is why health professionals need shared decision making skills to be able to initiate end-of-life conversations. Health professionals report needing more skills to raise the issue of end-of-life care options within consultations and patients want to be able to discuss issues important to them about future care plans. The development design was guided by the UK Medical Research Council's framework and a user-centred approach was applied. Four workshops were conducted with end users. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication for Population Health and Policy interventions was used to shape which questions needed to be answered through the workshops and to present the intervention. The International Patient Decision Aid Standards (IPDAS) criteria set the standards to be achieved. Areas considered significant to a shared decision making intervention were training of health professionals, conversations about end-of-life care, planning and evaluation of the decisions, reporting decisions in health records and repetition of consultation. The development process went through 14 iterations. An intervention named DESIRE was developed that comprises: (1) a training programme for health professionals; (2) shared decision making conversations; and (3) a patient decision aid. The intervention met 30 out of 33 IPDAS criteria. DESIRE is intended to support shared decision making about planning end-of-life care among patients with kidney failure, their relatives and health professionals. The study provides important tools for the stakeholders engaged that can be used within different models of care. What problem did the study address? International guidelines recommend health professionals involve patients with kidney failure in making decisions about end-of-life care, but there is variation in how this is implemented within and across kidney services. Furthermore, patients, relatives and health professionals find it challenging to initiate conversations about end-of-life care. What were the main findings? The study resulted in the development of a complex intervention, called DESIRE, about shared decision making and planning end-of-life care for patients with kidney failure, their relatives and health professionals in kidney services, including a training programme for health professionals, shared decision making conversations and a patient decision aid. Where and on whom will the research have an impact? The research contributes a shared decision making intervention to patients in the later stage of kidney failure, their relatives and health professionals. We believe that the DESIRE intervention could be introduced during consultations with health professionals at an earlier stage of the patient's illness trajectory, as well as being applied to other chronic diseases. This intervention development research is reported according to the GUIDance for the rEporting of intervention Development (GUIDED) checklist and the DEVELOPTOOLS Reporting Checklist. Patients, relatives and health professionals have been involved throughout the research process as part of the research team and advisory board. For this study, the advisory board has particularly contributed to the development process of the DESIRE intervention by actively participating in the four workshops, in the iterations between the workshops and in the preparation of the manuscript.

Enhancing Museum Experience through Augmented Reality: The Case of the Indonesian Postal Museum

This paper presents the development and implementation of Mussia AR, an interactive augmented reality (AR) application designed for the Indonesian Postal Museum. Aimed at enhancing the educational and engagement aspects of museum visits, this project addresses the need for innovative approaches in museum experiences. We followed an Extreme Programming methodology for the development, ensuring a user-centric and iterative approach. The application overlays digital information onto physical exhibits, providing visitors with an immersive and informative experience. Our development process included comprehensive user needs analysis, application design, implementation, and extensive testing for both functionality and user experience. The results from user testing indicate a significant improvement in visitor engagement and satisfaction. The application not only succeeded in providing an enhanced learning experience but also demonstrated the potential of AR technology in cultural and educational settings. Future recommendations include expanding the content, introducing multilingual support, and extending the application's compatibility to various platforms. Mussia AR stands as a testament to the effective use of AR in enriching educational experiences in museums.

Effectiveness of a web-enabled psychoeducational resource for postpartum depression and anxiety among women in British Columbia.

Postpartum depression (PPD) and anxiety (PPA) affect nearly one-quarter (23%) of women in Canada. eHealth is a promising solution for increasing access to postpartum mental healthcare. However, a user-centered approach is not routinely taken in the development of web-enabled resources, leaving postpartum women out of critical decision-making processes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, usability, and user satisfaction of PostpartumCare.ca, a web-enabled psychoeducational resource for PPD and PPA, created in partnership with postpartum women in British Columbia. Participants were randomized to either an intervention group (n = 52) receiving access to PostpartumCare.ca for four weeks, or to a waitlist control group (n = 51). Measures evaluating PPD (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and PPA symptoms (Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale) were completed at baseline, after four weeks, and after a two-week follow-up. User ratings of website usability and satisfaction and website metrics were also collected. PPD and PPA symptoms were significantly reduced for the intervention group only after four weeks, with improvements maintained after a two-week follow-up, corresponding with small-to-medium effect sizes (PPD: partial η2 = 0.03; PPA: partial η2 = 0.04). Intervention participants were also more likely than waitlist controls to recover from clinical levels of PPD symptoms (χ 2 (1, n = 63) = 4.58, p = .032) and PostpartumCare.ca's usability and satisfaction were rated favourably overall. Findings suggest that a web-enabled psychoeducational resource, created in collaboration with patient partners, can effectively reduce PPD and PPA symptoms, supporting its potential use as a low-barrier option for postpartum women. Protocol for this trial was preregistered on NIH U.S. National Library of Medicine, ClinicalTrials.gov as of May 2022 (ID No. NCT05382884).

Experiencing the body as play: Cultivating older adults’ exergame experiences using embodied metaphors and multimodal feedback

Physical activity (PA) is promising in increasing active life for older adults, but its repetitive and fatigue-inducing nature greatly harms older adults’ motivation to participate. Recently, there has been a growing interest in applying exergames to improve older adults’ PA adherence and engagement. To better support body-based interactions, embodied metaphors and multimodal feedback are suggested to ensure effective and meaningful mapping between elderly players’ input actions and exergame responses, but their effectiveness have not been fully investigated. After developing a list of embodied and ontological metaphors based a series of user-centered approaches, two experiments were conducted to investigate how embodied metaphors and multimodal feedback impact older adults'’ playing experience of PA exergames, among fifty-nine and twenty-five older adults, respectively. Regarding the embodied metaphor design, the results indicated that a higher embodiment level significantly and positively influenced the participants’ acceptance behavior in terms of their attitudes toward the exergame, and a higher information richness level demonstrated significantly positive effects on familiarity perception and all aspects of acceptance behavior. For the multimodal feedback design, the results indicated that 3D visual feedback better facilitated the participants’ sense of embodiment and immersion, as well as their acceptance behavior, compared to 2D visual feedback. Furthermore, constant tactile feedback in a continuous-only or continuous-and-augmented way significantly improved the participants’ PA movement performance and sense of embodiment, rather than instant feedback. Accordingly, a list of design guidelines for PA exergame development is proposed, with the possible contributions and limitations of this research addressed.

User-centric avatar design: A cognitive walkthrough approach for metaverse in virtual education

Metaverse, once a concept confined to science fiction, has emerged as a transformative reality during the digital era. As this immersive virtual world gains prominence, the role of avatars and the digital representations of users in shaping educational experiences within a metaverse becomes increasingly crucial. This study examined the design of avatars and their effectiveness in virtual education. Using the cognitive walkthrough (CW) method, a well-established user-centric assessment approach, this study examined how users engage in avatar design in virtual educational settings, highlighting their cognitive processes. Through the CW approach, this study identified usability issues and learning challenges, providing valuable insights into the user experience. The investigation focuses on the VRoid platform for avatar design, selected for its user-friendly interface and robust customization features. Participants (n ​= ​12; six men and six women) from diverse educational backgrounds were carefully selected to offer a comprehensive range of perspectives. They performed avatar design tasks that closely mirrored the learning environment of the metaverse, followed by in-depth post-exercise interviews. The findings of this study highlight the essential role of avatar design in enhancing user engagement and improving the learning outcomes of virtual education. Furthermore, we provide practical recommendations for educators and designers to effectively leverage avatar innovation. In a continuously evolving era of metaverse, this research contributes significantly to the ongoing discourse on user-centered design in educational settings, thereby influencing the future trajectory of virtual education.

Feasibility of a Mobile Health Intervention for Providing a Continuum of HIV Services for MSM: Pilot Study of the WeTest Program in 3 Cities in China.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China have a high risk for HIV infection but experience suboptimal rates of HIV testing and service engagement due to various social and structural barriers. We developed a mobile health (mHealth) intervention entitled "WeTest-Plus" (WeTest+) as a user-centered "one-stop service" approach for delivering access to comprehensive information about HIV risk, HIV self-testing, behavioral and biomedical prevention, confirmatory testing, treatment, and care. The goal of the current study was to investigate the feasibility of WeTest+ to provide continuous HIV services to high-risk MSM. Participants completed a 3-week pilot test of WeTest+ to examine acceptability, feasibility, and recommendations for improvement. Participants completed a structured online questionnaire and qualitative exit interviews facilitated by project staff. "Click-through" rates were assessed to examine engagement with online content. 28 participants were included, and the average age was 27.6 years (standard deviation = 6.8). Almost all participants (96.4%) remained engaged with the WeTest+ program over a 3-week observational period. The majority (92.9%) self-administered the HIV self-test and submitted their test results through the online platform. Overall click-through rates were high (average 67.9%). Participants provided favorable comments about the quality and relevance of the WeTest+ information content, the engaging style of information presentation, and the user-centered features. This pilot assessment of WeTest+ supports the promise of this program for promoting HIV self-testing and linkage to in-person services for MSM in China. Findings underscore the utility of a user-centered approach to mHealth program design.

Despite the different stages of development in the two cases, both employed a higher level of refflective design, aiming to create a lasting impact on users' identity using the products.

“FIT FUEL: A Diet Planner Platform Using Web Technology”

Abstract: In today's fast-paced world, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has become a significant concern for many individuals. The "FIT FUEL" project introduces a cutting-edge solution in the form of a web-based diet planner platform that leverages modern technology to assist users in achieving their fitness goals. By incorporating user-provided data such as height, weight, and desired weight management goals (gain, lose, or maintain weight), the platform calculates Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and suggests personalized diet plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One of the key innovations of FIT FUEL is its integration of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to fetch a diverse range of recipes, ensuring that users have access to a wide variety of meal options that align with their nutritional requirements and preferences. This platform not only facilitates calorie tracking but also promotes balanced nutrition and dietary diversity.
