Attitude towards Javanese Language: A Case Study of English Department Students in Brawijaya University, Indonesia

<em>This study aims to scrutinize the attitude of Javanese youth towards their use of local language. There are two research questions proposed in this study such as namely: 1) how is the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language, 2) what are the factors that effect on their attitudes. The objectives of this study are to define the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language and to discover why they are behaving so. Furthermore, this study adopted qualitative method applying descriptive analysis and selected the students of English Department of Batch 2014 Batch in Brawijaya University as the participants. The results showed that the subjects indicated showed both positive and negative attitudes towards the use of Javanese language depending on the context. The positive attitude was frequently revealed on questions related to their efforts in conserving Javanese as the local language, while the negative attitude was mostly reflected on the statements associated with their language preference in daily life. Moreover, there are several factors affecting their language attitudes namely the Javanese language internal system, social and traditional, and the prestige and the power of language.</em>

Multilingualism and the heteroglossia of ideologies in Lower Fungom (Cameroon)

Located at the northwestern edge of the Cameroonian Grassfields, Lower Fungom is a rural, linguistically highly diverse region (pop. ca. 12,000) where individual multilingualism in three local languages plus Cameroonian Pidgin English (henceforth CPE) is the norm, with a minority also speaking Cameroonian English. This article focuses on the different types of identity that can be projected via the use of English, CPE, and the local languages. Data come from language documentation projects and include self-reports, ethnographic observations, and analysis of language use. Such a diverse dataset allows us to uncover and discuss a number of aspects of the local language ideologies. Key here is the recognition that only exoglossic languages allow the representation of different identities qua membership in stereotypical categories – such as the case of English, which calls up stereotypes connected with authority and prestige – whereas the use of local languages is associated with village affiliation and, hence, relational rather than categorical identities. This ideological layer is not regimented by any form of prestige- or domain-based compartmentalization and, therefore, can hardly be captured by classical theories such as Fishman’s (1967) extended diglossia theory, whose limits in doing research on African rural settings are highlighted. Also, inspired by Jenks and Lee (2016), this article suggests the existence of a heteroglossia of ideologies of personal identity (relational vs. categorical) most likely determined by the relatively recent entry of English in the local language ecology.

PREVENTIVE EFFORTS AGAINST KONJO LANGUAGE EXTINCTION THROUGH MULTILINGUAL LEARNING

The objectives of this study are: 1) to explore strategies for teaching Indonesian and English to integrate local languages, 2) to identify the factors that support the revitalization of local languages in multilingual learning, 3) to determine the perceptions of teachers and students towards the use of local languages in language learning.The results showed that Indonesian language learning at SMP Satap Kajang was carried out in accordance with the applicable curriculum, namely the K-13 curriculum. Meanwhile, learning English has been taught to students since grade I. Local languages have never been taught to students because there is no direction or order from the Bulukumba district education office about what local languages to teach, who teaches them, and how to learn local languages.The observation also found that SMP 1 Satap Kajang had the opportunity to carry out learning the Konjo language. This is supported by the existence of several native teachers who master the Konjo language (one science teacher, social studies, Indonesian, mathematics, religious education, and one English teacher) the teacher also welcomes if multilingual integrated learning is carried out besides the majority of junior high school students. is a native of Kajang who in fact speaks Konjo in general, although most 92% of students know Konjo language. This potential needs to be utilized for learning local languages, especially Konjo language, as an introduction to regional languages and prevent extinction.

Kontribusi Dan Lokalitas Tafsir Faiḍ Al-Raḥmān

Nusantara's tafsir is understood as an interpretation product written by Nusantara scholars. There are things that are unique when we read the interpretations of Indonesian Ulama products. Among them, namely, the use of local languages, cultural elements and contexts that are specific to the Indonesian context. In general, after they perform the pilgrimage, they lived in Mecca-Arab for a long time to study religion over there, but their cultural identity and nationalism never disappeared. For example, Kiai Ṣaleh Darat who has a masterpiece in the form of interpretation, that is Faiḍ al-Raḥmān which will be explained in this article. The method used in this paper is descriptive analysis with a historical approach. The type of this research includes library research. The data sources are several libraries from books and journals describing Kiai Ṣaleh Darat. The result of this paper is a description of Kiai Ṣaleh Darat's intellectual history, the process of transmitting-transforming knowledge, its contribution to the thinking of the Nusantara’s Tafsir, and the locality of the interpretation of faidhur rahman.

Cross-cultural adjustment experiences of academic expatriates in some South African universities: The case of KwaZulu-Natal

This article discusses the cross-cultural adjustment experiences of selected academic expatriates from selected South African universities based in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. Quantitative data was collected from 142 out of 277 academic expatriates. Statistical procedures were used to analyse, interpret and make meaning of the raw data. The findings revealed that academic expatriates experience general and interaction adjustment challenges associated with the use of local languages and the understanding of local culture. However, female academic expatriates were found to be better adjusted in interaction and general adjustment as compared to their male counterparts. Furthermore, work adjustment challenges triggered by the poor coordination of work permit application were also discovered. The study stressed revision of human resources practices, immigration policies as well as cross-cultural adjustment support for academic expatriates into South African host academic institutions.

THE USE OF COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE IN ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION LEARNING

Effective learning information that is easily understood by students. So the use of communicative language becomes an important topic in learning without exception Islamic religious education. This article discusses the use of communicative language, influential factors, and communicative language needed in the learning of Islamic religious education. Descriptive qualitative data was collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and recording/video. Sources of research data are Islamic religious educators and students in SMP Negeri 5 Palopo. Data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman which divided into data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The researchers' findings show that the use of communicative language in the teaching of Islamic education is quite good and the factors that influence the use of communicative language are internal and external factors originating from educators, students, and the availability of facilities and infrastructure. Communicative language needed in Islamic religious education learning is communicative language that is easily understood by students, interspersed with the use of local languages, uses appropriate media and teaching aids and takes into account the condition of students while still referring to the communicative competencies that teachers need to have.

Penggunaan Bahasa Daerah pada Buku Bacaan Siswa Terbitan Kemdikbud

<p class="abstract">This study aims to identify the use of regional languages in student reading books published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study. The object of research is the local language in the student reading book published by the Ministry of Education and Culture entitled "Kenara Anak Suku Gayo" and "Kain Kulit Kayu Dei". The data from this study are student reading books published by the Ministry of Education and Culture which contain local languages. The data source in this research is an archive or document in the form of a student reading book published by the Ministry of Education and Culture which contains local languages. Data collection techniques use the technique of listening and note taking, the researcher first reads the reading book "Kenara Anak Suku Gayo" and "Kain Kulit Kayu Dei" published by the Ministry of Education and Culture to carefully determine the use of local languages, then record in full and then identify the use of local languages in the book reading. Data analysis techniques using flow analysis. The results showed that the Ministry of Education and Culture has efforts to preserve local languages, use Indonesian, and master foreign languages. The language used in the students' reading book "Kenara Anak Suku Gayo" and "Kain Kulit Kayu Dei" is not purely using Indonesian, but there is interference with local languages. The percentage of the use of local languages in the reading books of "Kenara Anak Suku Gayo" is 40%, while in the reading books of students "Kain Kulit Kayu Dei" 20%.<strong></strong></p>

Degree of Awareness and Reception of Local Language Use in Formal Education and New Technologies by the Youth in Africa: Insight from Cameroon

This study aims at shedding light on whether or how the youth receive the use of local languages in education and technologies in Cameroon. With data collected through questionnaire or based on quantitative data, the study sets out to provide an accurate answer to the following question: How are the youth aware of the teaching of languages in formal education and use in new technologies such as internet? A deep scrutiny of this main question reveals through analysis that recent introduction of Cameroon tongues into the formal school system has paved the way to a greater awareness by the youth of local languages and their use in education and new technologies. The study further unveils that the teaching of Cameroon tongues is a doorstep toward a better reception of local languages and their acknowledgement as the main tool for sustainable development by the youth, future leaders, who will therefore be prepared to foster change for the transformation of the continent. FLIP FABRIC AND NAME BOARD (CASE STUDY IN PANGKALPINANG CITY, BANGKA BELITUNG ISLANDS)

This study aims to explain the forms of fabrik range errors and nameplate in the City of Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands and find out the factors behind the occurrence of errors in the use of Indonesian in the fabric range and nameplate in the City of Pangkalpinang, Islands. Bangka Belitung. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method. The data collection technique used is the triangulation technique which consists of observation, documentation, and interviews. The subjects in this study were all fabric ranges and nameplate in the city of Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands which experienced errors in writing with the use of Indonesian. The results of this study are: the form of class that is often done is in writing sentences in foreign languages, the use of non-standard words, the use of abbreviated words that are not explained, and the use of local languages. and the lack of understanding of the owner of the fabric, the education of the owner or maker cannot be biased because there are still errors even though the education is high through S2, then the purpose of making it does not pay attention to the rules of writing. and almost all spandex fabric or nameplate no one gives input or criticism, it's just that there are some from the public who ask questions related to writing or related businesses.

LANGUAGE ATTITUDES AND LANGUAGE CHOICE AMONG STUDENTS IN YOGYAKARTA: A CASE STUDY AT UNIVERSITAS SANATA DHARMA

Yogyakarta is a multicultural city in which people from different regions and ethnicity live and well known as one of the best foreign tourist destinations in Indonesia. This situation gives an excellent opportunity for the community to communicate with others whose different cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, and language. Commonly, they talk in Javanese, the local language spoken in Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, due to the engagement with those who speak in different languages, Indonesian and English are gaining more frequent usage. Concerning this situation, this paper is to investigate the language choice among students in Yogyakarta. This study also scrutinises their language attitude toward English, colloquial Indonesian, and local languages. In achieving the objectives, a sociolinguistic questionnaire is given to 100 sample respondents who are the students of Universitas Sanata Dharma. The results show that the students have appreciative attitudes towards the colloquial Indonesian, English, and local languages. The investigation on the language choice indicates that the students choose to communicate using Indonesian. The dominance of Indonesian shifts the use of local languages.

“Language Policy” in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities in Current Trends of Afaan Oromoo

In many countries, policymakers suspect that the use of local languages in education can result in excessive ethnicization, which may lead to conflicts and divide nations. The objectives of the study are to assess the basic cause that stays Ethiopia to not have its own language policy and to investigate opportunities that leads Ethiopian to have language policy. The subjects of this study are language experts, policy makers and politicians, and target speech community. The major data collection instrument was questionnaire. Interviews with key informants and document analysis were supplementary tools to achieve the objective of the research. To mention some of the findings, a development plan of a country in all aspects should primarily deal with the concrete study of the language issues. There is statistical relationship between measurement and evaluation made by policy makers and opportunities in current trends of Afaan Oromoo (p-0.001). The case of Oromo language is not far from this general perception. Unless this Linguistic right is gained by the Oromo language speakers, these people hardly feel the full citizenship in the entire country, Ethiopia, because they can feel discrimination due to their lack of real participation in the country’s overall activities. Such discrimination can even cause conflict at different occasions. As from the general principles of language use is argued, the question of the Oromo language use as a national language is realized, Ethiopia’s overall development remain only a wish for the prime reason of lack of Oromo people’s motivation in the involvement of political, economic, social activities. Value linguistic and cultural pluralism practically, as demonstrated in the constitution. Currently Ethiopia is in the refolution (reform and revolution) which means education policy, Health policy, foreign relation policy, public service policy, and other major pillars of policies and declarations are changed and/or modified. Therefore, possible to design an independent language policy. Amend the issue of Afaan Oromoo as federal alternative working language in the constitution.

CULTURE SHOCKS FACED BY FORIEGN STUDENTS AT ANTASARI STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY BANJARMASIN

This research describes the culture shock faced by the foreign students who study at Antasari State Islamic University Banjarmasin. Foreign students who are conscientious in this research are 7 students come from Turkey and one from Thailand. The objectives of this research are: (1) To find out the culture shocks faced by the foreign students in academic aspects; (2) To find culture shocks faced by the foreign students in social aspects. All of the data have analized by descriptive and qualitative research. The results of this research indicated that the foreign students faced culture shock in academic aspects that consist of (1) In institutional rules: the complicated and long of procedures filling Study Plan Sheet Online, collecting of Study Plan Sheet, registrating of courses (2) The cleanliness of the university environment (3) Lecturers’ Rules which consists of discipline on the schedule the lectures, the use of local language (Banjarese) in the classes wether by lecturers or local students. Then, culture shocks in Social Aspects students faced the behavior and attitude of the local students such as talking and made jokes while lecturing, using handphones while lecturing, spitting anywhere, male and female local students’ interaction, and the system of local public transportation.

Time and Space in Between: Time Zones, Languages, and Cultures in Transcarpathia (Ukraine)

Abstract In this paper, based on the data of a sociological research and the analysis of the linguistic landscapes of six Transcarpathian cities, we have illustrated that in Transcarpathia a significant part of the population – regardless of ethnicity – live their lives not according to the official “Kyiv time” (EET; UTC+2) but according to the “local time” (CET; UTC+1). Even the names of the two times are distinguished in the local language use in Ukrainian, Hungarian, and Russian languages alike. The difference between official central time and “local time” appeared in Transcarpathia when the region became annexed to the Soviet Union. Yet, before the Second World War, each state in the region used CET. The Soviet power introduced Moscow time zone (MSK; UTC+3) of two hours ahead. The distinction between “local time” and central time was maintained when Transcarpathia became part of the newly independent Ukraine. The population in the region was urged to use a different time zone for a relatively short time from a historical point of view. The persistence of “local time” is also strengthened by the fact that it contributes to the image of Transcarpathia as a particular, specific region of Ukraine.

Directive Speech Acts in Academic Discourse: Ethnography of Communication from Gender Perspective in Higher Education

In spoken academic discourse, there are various directive speech acts forms and strategies both formal and informal. Based on the previous research with different focuses show that directive speech acts is one of speech acts types mostly used in daily conversation. The study of directive speech acts can also be found in classroom interaction as spoken academic discourse. The locutors’ and interlocutors’ expressions in spoken academic discourse are vary. Language variation involves direct and indirect strategies as well as literal and non-literal with small portion of local language use. The use of directive speech acts is affected by contextual socio-cultural factors within the conversation. The locutors sometimes use local language in conveying certain meaning to the interlocutors. The structure of dialogue, moreover, disallows the taking up of any position beyond the interlocutors from which they can be integrated into a larger totality.

Pointing Gestures and Verbal Acts: Linguistic Boundaries by Puor and Lamalera People in a Barter Market, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

This article highlights language practices by Puor and Lamalera people, in South Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, in a ‘barter market.’ While interacting in the market, Puor and Lamalera people prefer their own local languages, rather than Bahasa Indonesia, the lingua franca in a linguistically diverse Indonesia. Unavoidably, the use of these local languages in Indonesia is invoked through specific cultural assessments. In this barter market, speakers combine verbal acts and pointing gestures to supplement their linguistic repertoires and to convey message amplifiers that embody cultural meanings in their respective frames of reference and communicative events. The use of pointing gestures and verbal acts that build the linguistic repertoires becomes the main rule of interacting in the barter market, a social phenomenon which renders this market different from other ‘money’ markets. The paper employs an ethnography of communication approach, through which to elicit and frame significant patterns and functions in these language practices. This article attempts to offer a unique perspective in the use of local languages in Indonesia, by presenting language as practice rather than as a linguistic system of sounds. As such, the categorization of language becomes blurred in that Puor and Lamalera linguistic repertoires shift as they are predicated on practice.

Radio Redux: Audience Participation and the Reincarnation of Radio for Development in Africa

Along with the valorization of “beneficiary” participation in development praxis, contemporary communication scholarship has tended toward internet-enabled technologies and applications. This study breaks ranks with the implicit loss of faith in the capacity of the so-called legacy media, and radio in particular. It argues that precisely those advances in new technologies, together with the peculiar media ecology of Ghana and Africa generally, are the bases for prenotions about the enduring relevance of radio. To verify this claim, focus group discussions were conducted among radio audiences in Ghana. The findings suggest three factors for a renaissance of radio as a development communication medium: its contribution to democratic pluralism; the use of local languages that enables social inclusion; its appropriation of new technologies for audience participatory engagement. Radio has thus evolved from the powerful effects notions of a one-way transmitter of information to an increasingly more interactive, audience-centric medium.

Relevance of indigenous conflict management mechanisms: evidence from Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo and Central Gonja Districts of Northern Region, Ghana

The Northern Region is witnessing protracted and relapsed conflicts, and attempts at resolving these largely through Western models, particularly the formal court system have not been successful. As such, this study explores the relevance of indigenous conflict management mechanisms in restoring enduring peace in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study employed a multiple case study design. Data was collected from forty-three purposively selected respondents using interviews, focus group discussions, and observations. The results from thematic and cross-site analysis revealed that indigenous mechanisms have features of inclusive participatory approach at all levels of the conflict leading to acceptable outcomes. The traditional mechanisms have proven to be immediate and meaningful, accessible, and affordable. The use of local languages is well understood by all parties and processes and procedure are well attuned to local needs as they produce quick justice for the people. The development of a comprehensive programme to incorporate aspects of both the indigenous and western-centred judicial structures for the purposes of legitimacy of management outcomes is proposed. Bilingual English teaching in colonial India: the case of John Murdoch’s work in Madras Presidency, 1855–1875

ABSTRACT There is a prevalent conception about colonial Indian education – in the absence of much empirical research into specific contexts – that it was carried out only in English with the aim of anglicising the masses. While it is true that there were colonial motives of acculturation embedded in English language teaching and English-medium instruction, the idea that English language learning was exclusively monolingual is historically inaccurate. Indeed, the survival of bilingual teaching materials prepared in the nineteenth century for use in colonial schools suggests that, outside elite English-medium instruction, the use of Indian languages was common in English teaching. To explore this possibility further, this article focuses on the work and ideas of a prominent colonial educationalist, John Murdoch (1818–1904), with a focus on the schoolbooks he was associated with and on his recommendations for bilingual English teaching in the colonial schools of Madras Presidency. Murdoch’s ideas on the use of local languages in teaching reveal complexities and intricacies which have been under-explored in previous histories of colonial Indian education.

Metode Dakwah Pada Kalangan Lanjut Usia Di Masjid Al-Furqon Haurgeulis

Elderly people are every Indonesian citizen, male and female, who have reached the age of 60 years and over, whether they have the potentially or not (The decree of the Minister of Social affair of RI No.15/HUK/2007). The objectives of this study are to determine the use of da’wah method for elderly and find out the supporting and inhibiting factors in conducting da’wah to the elderly people at Al-Furqon Mosque. This study applies a qualitative method (field research) for data collection, this study employs structured interview, observation and documentation techniques. The findings of the study show that there is no specific recitation for elderly people at Al-Furqon Mosque almost middle age. Routine recitation is held once a week on Sunday night and Wednesday night. It implements lecturing, holding question and answer and applicative methods. And the second finding, supporting factors of conducting da’wah to elderly people it shows adequate facilities and infrastructure, the right time table this activity, is after Maghrib mass prayer, the use of local languages as means of communication to the send the da’wah message from the preacher, The tolerance of other groups or organizations that are contrary to the culture of the Al-Furqon Mosque, lastly the family support of the elderly people who always motivaty them to be “Istiqomah” in joining the recitation at family and the inhibiting factor in delivering the message of da’wah to elderly worshipers in terms of psychological and physical perspectives. Are from the psychological lonely, mourning the loss of a loved one and feel depression due to pressure from family. Are from a physical perspective, they experience decreased hearing ability, decreased vision, and immune system that is getting weaker so they are susceptible to disease. So rarely can take part in recitation.
