Microwave heating is a form of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. The heating of primary and secondary mineral raw materials in the microwave field depends primarily on their dielectric and thermal properties. The condition is the absorption of microwave radiation. Dielectric heating of materials occurs immediately after placing them in an electric high-frequency field. Knowledge of the dielectric characteristics of mineral raw materials is an important assumption for the use of electromagnetic radiation at the intensification of technological treatment methods. Most mined minerals consist of several mineral components that have different dielectric properties. Most sulphides are well heated in a microwave field. Conversely, tailings components of ores, such as quartz, are transmission materials. The study of dielectric properties involves measurements of the complex relative permittivity ε*, which consists of a real and an imaginary part. The imaginary part of permittivity “loss factor” represents the measure of dielectric losses in the material. Microwave heating of sulphide ores and concentrates such are chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, galena depends on their chemical composition and content of impurities. The article describes the influence of dielectric properties on heating of chalcopyrite in microwave field. SEM analyses of studied samples are presented.

Use of photosensitive molecules in the crosslinking of biopolymers: applications and considerations in biomaterials development.

The development of diverse types of biomaterials has significantly contributed to bringing new biomedical strategies to treat clinical conditions. Applications of these biomaterials can range from mechanical support and protection of injured tissues to joint replacement, tissue implants, and drug delivery systems. Among the strategies commonly used to prepare biomaterials, the use of electromagnetic radiation to initiate crosslinking stands out. The predominance of photo-induced polymerization methods relies on a fast, efficient, and straightforward process that can be easily adjusted to clinical needs. This strategy consists of irradiating the components that form the material with photons in the near ultraviolet-visible wavelength range (i.e., ∼310 to 750 nm) in the presence of a photoactive molecule. Upon photon absorption, photosensitive molecules can generate excited species that initiate photopolymerization through different reaction mechanisms. However, this process could promote undesired side reactions depending on the target zone or treatment type (e.g., oxidative stress and modification of biomolecules such as proteins and lipids). This review explores the basic concepts behind the photopolymerization process of ex situ and in situ biomaterials. Particular emphasis was put on the photosensitization initiated by the most employed photosensitizers and the photoreactions that they mediate in aqueous media. Finally, the undesired oxidation reactions at the bio-interface and potential solutions are presented.

Investigating the Influence of the Belt IR Dryer Regime Parameters on Kinetics of Carrot Drying Process

Introduction. In the process of convective drying, there is a contradiction between drying speed and energy efficiency. One of the solutions to this contradiction is the use of targeted energy supply to the product. The method of targeted energy supply is the use of electromagnetic radiation in the drying process. Aim of the Article. The study was aimed at obtaining the coefficients of a logarithmic model for calculating the performance of a belt IR dryer for drying carrots. Materials and Methods. There were studied a modular belt IR dryer with the ability to control the speed of the belt and the power of the emitters. To describe the process, there were used standard models of the dependence of relative water content on drying time. Results. An analysis of the drying rate curves showed an extreme effect of the belt speed on the drying rate. At belt speeds above 10 mm/s, an increase in belt speed leads to an increase in the duration of the drying process. To describe the kinetics of the drying process at IR powers of 170, 300, and 450 W, there was used a logarithmic model, as it most adequately describes the experimental data. Discussion and Conclusion. For this type of dryers it is recommended to use the belt speed of about 10 mm/sec. The obtained coefficients of the logarithmic model are used to calculate the capacity of the drying unit.

Effects of Infrared and Microwave Radiation on the Bioactive Compounds of Microalga Spirulina platensis after Continuous and Intermittent Drying.

Pharmaceutical, nutritional and food industries have recently become interested in the potential of Spirulina platensis, a kind of cyanobacterium with high levels of proteins, vitamins and bioactive compounds. Because of its high moisture, this microalga needs to be submitted to a preservation technique such as drying to be properly used. The aim of this work is to investigate the use of infrared and microwave radiation in the Spirulina platensis drying process. The experiments were performed in continuous and intermittent modes, evaluating different operating conditions for infrared and microwave drying, as well as their effects on the quality of the final product, expressed by the content of bioactive compounds (i.e., total phenolic, total flavonoid, citric acid and phycocyanin contents). The results proved that the use of electromagnetic radiation in the drying of spirulina is an interesting alternative for processing this material if performed under adequate operating conditions. The experiments carried out continuously at lower temperatures and powers and the combination between different temperatures and powers in the intermittent mode resulted in a final product with satisfactory levels of bioactive compounds and low operation times in comparison with conventional methodologies.

Advances in Graphene-Polymer Nanocomposite Foams for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

With the continuous advancement of wireless communication technology, the use of electromagnetic radiation has led to issues such as electromagnetic interference and pollution. To address the problem of electromagnetic radiation, there is a growing need for high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials. Graphene, a unique carbon nanomaterial with a two-dimensional structure and exceptional electrical and mechanical properties, offers advantages such as flexibility, light weight, good chemical stability, and high electromagnetic shielding efficiency. Consequently, it has emerged as an ideal filler in electromagnetic shielding composites, garnering significant attention. In order to meet the requirements of high efficiency and low weight for electromagnetic shielding materials, researchers have explored the use of graphene-polymer nanocomposite foams with a cellular structure. This mini-review provides an overview of the common methods used to prepare graphene-polymer nanocomposite foams and highlights the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of some representative nanocomposite foams. Additionally, the future prospects for the development of graphene-polymer nanocomposite foams as electromagnetic shielding materials are discussed.

A Versatile Photochromic Dosimeter Enabling Detection of X‐Ray, Ultraviolet, and Visible Photons

AbstractAn accurate measurement of radiation doses is required to ensure efficient use of electromagnetic radiation in medical diagnostics, agriculture, or general lighting applications. Yet, existing dosimeters usually face the issues of cumbersome manipulation, time‐consuming analysis, or power‐supply requirement. Here, an all‐round dosimeter is reported based on BaMgSiO4, a photochromic material that exhibits a reversible white‐pink color change upon irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements under in situ coloring and bleaching reveal that the charge carrier trapping and detrapping at oxygen vacancy‐related defects determine the photochromic behavior. This can be utilized for dosimetry of X‐rays, ultraviolet, and visible light, as the coloring and bleaching are dependent on the irradiation wavelength and the dose. The distinct color variation of BaMgSiO4 allows for on‐site measurement of irradiation doses by a colorimetric method, and the special wavelength‐responsive behavior in the ultraviolet region is suitable for personal solar ultraviolet light monitoring. By virtue of good stability and excellent cycling robustness, BaMgSiO4 can be an ideal integrating detector for X‐rays, ultraviolet, and visible light dosimetry. A prototype device is also developed for long‐duration daylight measurements. These findings enhance the understanding of the photochromic behavior in inorganic materials and can stimulate the exploration of new photochromic dosimeters.

Effect of a Conical Cellulose Structure on Horseradish Peroxidase Biomacromolecules

The effect of a dielectric conical structure on the adsorption properties of an enzyme on mica was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) with the example of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The cone used was a cellulose cone with a 60° apex angle. Namely, AFM allowed us to reveal an increase in the enzyme’s aggregation during its adsorption onto mica from the solution incubated near the cone apex for 40 min—as compared with the control enzyme samples incubated far away from the cone. In contrast, no change in the HRP adsorption properties was observed after shorter (10 min) incubation of the sample near the cone. The enzymatic activity of HRP was found to be the same for all the enzyme samples studied. Our findings should be considered upon designing biosensors (in particular, those intended for highly sensitive diagnostic applications) and bioreactors containing conical structural elements. Furthermore, since HRP is widely employed as a model enzyme in studies of external impacts on enzymes determining food quality, our data can be of use in the development of food-processing methods based on the use of electromagnetic radiation (microwave treatment, radiofrequency heating, etc.).

Use of Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) in Preservation of Fruit Juices

This study shows the bactericidal effect of Electromagnetic Field on fruit juice microbes. Short shelf-life period of fruit juice caused by spoilage organisms has limiting factor for its economy value. The Eighteen microorganisms isolated from both fresh and spoilt fruit samples (Pineapple and Apple), and identified during the study include, twelve (12) bacteria and Six (6) fungi, out of which only the bacterial isolates were exposed to electromagnetic field of 0mG, 500mG, and 5000mG for thirty minutes. The bacteria species were Leuconostoc mesentroides, Bacillus species, Lactobacillus brevis, Microbacterium species, Clostridium species, Bacillus cereus, Acetobacter aceti, and Staphylococcus aureus. The Gram negative bacteria isolates were Erwinia carotovora, Erwinia ananas, and Proteus species. Exposure of the isolates to an electromagnetic field of 0mG, 500mG and 5000mG showed a decrease in some electromagnetic field magnitude. This study shows reduction in growth range among most bacterial species tested at 500mG electromagnetic radiation exposure, but the growth of many of these bacterial species were triggered at 5000mG electromagnetic radiation exposure. This may mean an initiation of: adaptation mechanism, growth mechanism in some microorganism, and sugar content of the fruit juice from which they are being isolated. The exposure of the bacteria to electromagnetic field elicited detectable responses therefore depends on the adaptation mechanism of each bacteria and sugar content of the fruit from which it is being isolated from. Thus, future research can be done to optimize the limits specified for target microbes that are strength and frequency of this EMF in diseases control.

Influence of the Heating Method on the Efficiency of Biomethane Production from Expired Food Products

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of heating with microwave electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on the efficiency of the methane fermentation (MF) of expired food products (EFP). The research was inspired by the positive effect of EMR on the production of biogas and methane from different organic substrates. The experiment was carried out on a laboratory scale in fully mixed, semi-continuous anaerobic reactors. The technological conditions were as follows: temperature, 35 ± 1 °C; organic load rate (OLR), 2.0 kgVS·m−3∙d−1; and hydraulic retention time (HRT), 40 days. The source of the EMR was a magnetron (electric power, 300 W). There was no statistically significant influence of the use of EMR on the achieved technological effects of MF. The efficiency of biogas production was 710 ± 35 dm3·kgVS−1 in the variant with EMR and 679 ± 26 dm3·kgVS−1 in the variant with convection heating (CH). The methane contents were 63.5 ± 2.4% (EMR) and 62.4 ± 4.0% (CH), and the cumulative methane production after 40 days was 271.2 and 288.6 dm3CH4, respectively.

THEORETICAL RESEARCH OF THE PARAMETERS OF THE GENERATOR WITH THE SYSTEM PHASE FREQUENCY ADJUSTMENT

Providing the population with fruit products is determined not only by the level of production, but also by the effective organization of storage. Practical experience shows that for storing fruit and berry products, the method of storing fruits in cold rooms with a controlled gas environment has become widespread. A significant drawback of the gas environment is that a significant proportion of fruit loss (up to 30%) during storage is due to their defeat by physiological disorders and diseases (mold, fungi, spore-forming bacteria. Therefore, there is a need to develop new, more affordable and less costly storage technologies based on the use of electromagnetic radiation. The article studies the fluctuation processes in the PLL system of the generator with the definition of its main parameters. Liz showed that for the destruction of microorganisms on the surface of apples, it should be carried out using electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range 73–77 GHz, exposure time 60–80 s, power 650–750 MW and relative frequency instability 10–7–10–8. The data showed that a single-ring PLL cannot be used to create a frequency-stable oscillator tunable in the frequency range of the millimeter range with a multiplication factor of 1500 units. To analyze the fluctuation characteristics of the generator output signal, a mathematical description of the frequency synchronization process of the synchronized generator for a single-loop PLL system is proposed.

Acoustic assessment of pulmonary ventilation in children with bronchial asthma on the background of a single exposure to microwave radiation

Summary. Diseases of the respiratory organs of children, occurring with obstructive syndrome, represent one of the most serious problems in terms of transition to chronic forms. The chronic process is accompanied by a decrease in pulmonary ventilation, which leads to the search for effective methods of complex therapy of diseases.
 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of acoustic indicators of pulmonary ventilation in children with bronchial asthma, against the background of non-invasive non-thermal microwave radiation.
 Materials and methods. 122 children with bronchial asthma aged from 3 to 17 years were examined. 113 patients underwent a single session of non-invasive microwave therapy with the Aster device. Comparison of acoustic characteristics of pulmonary ventilation was carried out taking into account the severity of the disease and the age of children with bronchial asthma. Acoustic assessment of ventilation function was performed using the computer bronchophonography complex Pattern-01 before the Aster procedure, after 5 and 15 minutes. In 20 (16.4%) patients with bronchial asthma, the dynamics of cough was evaluated against the background of Aster therapy for 7 days.
 Results. Improvement of bronchial patency was registered in all age groups with mild bronchial asthma. In the group of moderate asthma, exposure to electromagnetic radiation led to a significant reduction in ventilation disorders in children aged 711 years. As patients grow older, as well as with severe bronchial asthma, the smallest dynamics of the parameters of pulmonary ventilation was observed against the background of Aster therapy. The use of electromagnetic radiation in addition to traditional basic therapy for 7 days leads to a faster regression of cough in patients with bronchial asthma.
 Conclusion. The combination of traditional basic therapy with electromagnetic non-thermal radiation in patients with bronchial asthma reduces obstructive pulmonary ventilation disorders and promotes faster cough regression.

Use of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation to remove biofilms from canvasses

A method based on the use of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in the radiofrequency band was experimented to eliminate heterotrophic organisms from biofilms encrusting linen canvasses used for paintings. Artificial biofilms were used for exposure to EMR. Biofilms were grown on fragments of canvasses sampled from the backside of a painting. The fragments, after sterilization, were inoculated with several heterotrophic microorganisms previously isolated from other canvasses used for paintings and identified by molecular analyses as the bacteria Bacillus mycoides and Bacillus subtilis, and the microfungi Aspergillus versicolor, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Cladosporium oxysporum and Fusarium oxysporum. The newly formed biofilms resulted to contain the same microorganisms used for the inocula. They were exposed to EMR obtained by an amplitude-modulating radiofrequency sine wave with a train of rectangular pulses with 200 ns repetition time and 10% duty cycle. The exposure protocol consisted of three applications of two hours each, every other day. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analyses carried out on the EMR-treated biofilms showed that all the microorganisms disappeared after the third application. The amplitude of the adopted EMR was not high enough to cause any significant increase in the temperature of the substrates. Therefore, the methodology showed to be non-invasive for the artefacts and its exposure levels not hazardous for operators and the environment compared to other techniques adopted in the field of conservation of cultural heritage. Among the latter techniques, the most common one is based on the use of biocides that, although effective, present problems in all the above-described areas.

Recent Advances in Indoor Localization via Visible Lights: A Survey.

Because of the limitations of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in indoor scenarios, various types of indoor positioning or localization technologies have been proposed and deployed. Wireless radio signals have been widely used for both communication and localization purposes due to their popular availability in indoor spaces. However, the accuracy of indoor localization based purely on radio signals is still not perfect. Recently, visible light communication (VLC) has made use of electromagnetic radiation from light sources for transmitting data. The potential for deploying visible light communication for indoor localization has been investigated in recent years. Visible-light-based localization enjoys low deployment cost, high throughput, and high security. In this article, the most recent advances in visible-light-based indoor localization systems have been reviewed. We strongly believe that visible-light-based localization will become a low-cost and feasible complementary solution for indoor localization and other smart building applications.

Influence of the Duration of Microwave Irradiation of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Cones on the Quality of Harvested Seeds

To improve the process of seed extraction, new solutions have been investigated in an attempt to develop guidelines for the construction of small seed extraction equipment. One of the solutions proposed in this field is the use of electromagnetic radiation in the first stage of hulling cones, reducing their initial moisture content, which will result in quicker scale opening. It is proposed that cones should be irradiated for a relatively short period in the first stage. This operation will allow a quicker loss of moisture from the cones that are still closed, which will result in a more intensive opening of cone scales and will also positively affect the exposure of seeds for the next phase of hulling. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of microwave irradiation of pine cones on the quality of the seeds obtained. Cones were exposed to microwaves produced by an 800 W generator. The research was performed in several modes, in which the variable parameters were the duration of microwave irradiation, arrangement of cones with the apex pointed towards either the inner or outer part of the turntable, and the number of cones. The temperature distribution on the surface of and inside the cones was determined using the THERM v2 (Vigo System SA, Ożarów Mazowiecki, Poland) thermal image processing software. We also assessed the energy (vitality) and germinability (quality class) of seeds that were not exposed and those after microwave treatment. The results of the research allowed us to state that, with the assumed parameters of the process, it is possible to obtain second quality class seeds after exposure to microwaves for 5 s. This result was comparable to the quality of seeds obtained without the use of microwaves. When the irradiation time was increased above 5 s, the vitality of seeds decreased and their quality was not satisfactory.

Spectrophotometry as a tool for characterizing durability of woven geotextiles

Geotextiles are used in numerous applications ranging from coastal hydraulic projects to geotechnical landfill projects. Durability studies are necessary for the sizing of these structures since these projects are subject to aggressive weathering. Therefore, it is important to be able to rapidly evaluate the rate of degradation of the geotextile, without detriment to the project. For traditional tests of geosynthetics, large areas must be exhumed, therefore a test which makes use of small specimens is proposed: spectrophotometry. The procedure proposed here makes use of electromagnetic radiation to evaluate the degradation of woven geotextiles by means of analysis of ultraviolet and infrared absorption. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the analysis of geotextile materials by spectrophotometry, making comparisons between laboratory and field degradation. The analyses and correlations were demonstrated to be satisfactory for characterization of degraded geotextiles. The results, with respect to both the absorbance of ultraviolet and transmittance of infrared, yielded both qualitative and quantitative characterizations of the behavior of the studied material. Therefore, spectrophotometry may be considered viable alternative for evaluating the characterization of durability in exhumed samples.

Experimental justification of the use of electromagnetic radiation of the light range and tissue growth factors in the treatment of the failure of intestinal anastomosis

The research work reflects the results of an experimental study, the purpose of which was to develop a method of sealing the small intestinal anastomosis under peritonitis. The experiment was performed on 20 white Wistar male rats weighing about 250 grams. The possibilities of using physical (light of a certain wavelength) and biological (tissue growth factors) methods in the prevention and treatment of acute inflammatory reactions and stimulation of reparative processes are shown. It is noted that a promising direction for further research on methods for the prevention of insolvency of small bowel anastomoses is the use of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation in visible spectrum in combination with the application of tissue growth factors.

Metabolic and ultrastructural adaptation mechanisms during the primary prophylactic action of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation under normal and radiation conditions

Experimental studies have established that that low-intensity ultrahigh frequency (UHF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) has a preventive effect under the action of radiation and other pathogenic factors, which manifests itself in the accelerated development of adaptation, in the predominance of anabolic reactions over catabolic ones, and in the strengthening of the body' structural reserves. At the same time, from the standpoint of studying the mechanisms of primary prevention, it is very important not only to identify the overall adaptation effect, but also to have an idea on the specific contribution of a physical factor used in the development of adaptation. To identify metabolic and ultrastructural adaption parameters under the action of low-intensity UHF EMR on healthy animals and to determine their stability (safety), by using a model of radiation exposure. The experiments were carried on 42 mature male rats weighing 180-200g. All the rats were divided into 5 groups: 2 experimental groups of 8 animals each for the comparative study of the specific features of adaptation developed under the preliminary action of UHF EMR in healthy animals and under radiation; 2 control groups of 8 animals each, and one intact group of 10 animals. The lumbar region (the area of the projection of the adrenal glands) was exposed to UHF EMP for 2 min daily (a cycle of 10 sessions). The animals were once irradiated at 2 Gy 60Co gamma ray doses, by using an Agat-R apparatus. The investigation objects were the liver, adrenal glands, testes, and thymus. The investigators used biochemical assays (the levels of RNA and DNA, antioxidant activity, specific activity in the thymocyte genome), transmission electron microscopy of adrenocorticocytes in the adrenal bundle zone and Sertoli cells in the testis. Mitochondria (number, average and total area, number of cristae) were morphometrically analyzed. The metabolic and ultrastructural adaption changes induced by UHF EMR in healthy animals were ascertained to be able to withstand the pathogenic effect of radiation and at the same time showed both stability (safety) and certain variability (plasticity) in their reactions. In this case, there were increases in the synthesis of nucleic acids and in the activity of the antioxidant system; there was also mitochondrial structural stability that was more manifested in the adrenocorticocytes in the adrenal bundle zone. At the same time, there was also a decrease in the intensity (magnitude) of a number of adaptive indicators, although by and large they were significantly higher than the level of control (the effect of radiation). Thus, the effect of UHF EMR on healthy animals contributed to the development of adaptive rearrangements in the organs studied. The essence of these changes was mainly the enhancement of synthetic reactions, as indicated by a larger amount of RNA and DNA, the activation of cellular and intracellular regeneration with the increased processes of hyperplasia of the mitochondrial cristae and the higher levels of ribosomes and polysomes. In addition, it can be assumed that the use of UHF EMR has laid the physicochemical foundations of its antioxidant action as conformational rearrangements in the membranes, which increased their structural stability. The findings are indicative of the increased level of morphofunctional reserves in the studied cells and tissues due to their increased bioenergetic and plastic potential. This study has provided new data that expand our understanding of the features of the development of adaptive mechanisms and the formation of the body's structural and functional reserves under the primary prophylactic action of low-intensity UHF EMR, by using the model of radiation exposure.

Use of electromagnetic radiation from fractures for mining-induced stress field assessment

This paper presents an electromagnetic radiation-based method to qualitatively assess mine-induced stress field at the longwall face. We first analyze the correlation between electromagnetic (EM) signals and stress, and then measure the signals and drilling bits in both the strike and dip directions at the 11702 working face of Nuodong Coal Mine, China, which indirectly verifies this method. Results show that there is a positive correlation between EM intensity and stress. In the same coal seam, the frequency of EM signals is inversely proportional to the extended size of the cracks inside the coal rock, and the dominant frequency (DF) of the EM signal is negatively related to external stress. Test results in Nuodong Coal Mine show that the EM intensity and DF can well reflect a stress relief zone, concentration zone and original zone. In addition, through field test and theoretical calculation, we can ascertain that the crack propagation length is from several centimeters to greater than 20 cm. The stress magnitude inside the coal rock can be qualitatively evaluated by using the correlation of the EM signal intensity, frequency and stress.

Photothermal treatment with EGFRmAb-AuNPs induces apoptosis in hypopharyngeal carcinoma cells via PI3K/AKT/mTOR and DNA damage response pathways.

Hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HC) is one of the most malignant tumors in the upper aerodigestive tract. Currently, there are no effective treatments for HC. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are a promising tool that can be used for plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT), which refers to the use of electromagnetic radiation, most often in near infrared (NIR) region, for the treatment of various medical conditions including cancer. AuNPs have been proved to be a promising tool for NIR spectroscopy-mediated photothermal therapies. In this study, we chemically conjugated AuNPs with a monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a cell-surface receptor that is overexpressed in many cancers. We then assessed the effect of NIR photothermal treatment with the EGFRmAb-AuNPs in FaDu HC cells. Our data showed that nanoparticle conjugation with the EGFRmAb improved the specific targeting towards FaDu cells and reduced cytotoxicity towards normal (293 T) cells which do not overexpress the EGFR. A significant amount of our EGFRmAb-conjugated AuNPs could enter the nucleus. Moreover, the expression levels of double strand DNA break repair proteins, including p-ATR, p-CHK1, and p-CHK2 were increased following AuNPs treatment, indicating the presence of DNA damage. These findings suggest that the AuNPs can potentially disrupt genome integrity and induce apoptosis. In addition, EGFRmAb-AuNPs+NIR could induce FaDu cell apoptosis, accompanied by the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and stimulation of DNA damage response. Based on these data, PPTT using the EGFRmAb-AuNPs could be a new promising treatment for HC.

A prospective study on the effects of therapeutic ultrasound in cancer using an animal model

CONTEXT: Ultrasound is emerging as a novel treatment agent for cancer. The advantage of using ultrasound is that it is not an electromagnetic radiation; hence, it does not produce the undesired harmful effects encountered through the repeated use of electromagnetic radiation. AIMS: The present study was aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of ultrasound in 7,12-dimethyl benz (a) anthracene (DMBA)-induced sarcoma in rats. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Forty female Wistar rats were used in the experimental study. They were allocated into four groups. DMBA was used to induce sarcoma in 20 rats. Therapeutic ultrasound was applied at 2.5 W/cm2 for 10 min (continuous mode) to 10 sarcoma tumor-bearing rats and normal 10 rats. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: DMBA was used to induce sarcoma in rats. Body weight, tumor weight, and serum enzymes were determined following treatment with therapeutic ultrasound (Chattanooga Group, Hixson,TN USA (Model: Intelect® Mobile Combo Model No. 2778). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) statistical package. The results were expressed as mean, standard error of mean (SEM).
