Effect of Prebiotic Supplementation on Probiotic Viability and Physicochemical Characteristics of Fermented Coconut Water with Bifidobacterium longum

Background: Probiotics and prebiotics are functional ingredients that provide health benefits to consumers but they are mainly incorporated in dairy products. Designing a non-dairy product in which probiotics and prebiotics would be incorporated would allow more consumers to benefit from their advantages. Objective: This study investigated the effect of supplementation of two different prebiotics, fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and inulin, on the viability of Bifidobacterium longum ATCC BAA-999 in coconut water. Methods: Two concentrations of prebiotics used were 1% and 2%. The physicochemical characteristics of fermented coconut water with B. longum for 9 h at 37oC and during refrigerated storage at 4oC for 2 weeks were analyzed. The viability of B. longum in fermented coconut water was maintained above the recommended therapeutic level (7 log CFU/mL) with or without supplementation with prebiotics. Results: Most distinct changes in colour (∆E > 3) occurred in fermented coconut water compared to unfermented coconut water. An increase in the total soluble solids was also observed in fermented coconut water with the increase in the concentration of prebiotics. There were no significant changes in the clarity, pH, and concentrations of shikimic and malic acids in the fermented coconut water with or without supplementation with prebiotics over the 2 weeks of storage. Acetic acid production was observed in the fermented coconut water with the highest acetic acid production in the fermented coconut water supplemented with 1% FOS after 2 weeks of storage. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the potential use of coconut water as a medium to produce a probiotic drink.

Economic Empowerment of Residents of Al-Hidayah Kalumbuk Padang Orphanage by Utilizing Virgin Coconut Oil Manufacturing Waste into Nata de Coco Beverage Products as Additional Income

The "Al-Hidayah" orphanage, established in Kalumbuk, Padang City, in 1987, by the Al-Hidayah Foundation. The establishment of this orphanage is because in the Kalumbuk area there are many orphans and orphans, who are economically deprived. They struggle with the cost of living and the cost of education. The number of them at the beginning of the establishment was 35 men, and 15 women. Those who live in the orphanage are boys, while women live with their parents, in houses around the orphanage. The current economic situation of the orphanage is still in shortage, because it still depends on government assistance and donations from the community. Meanwhile, orphanage children have potential, especially high school and junior high school students who number 26 people. If directed to fill their free time with activities that can generate additional income, it will help the economy of the orphanage. Previously, the children of this orphanage had been trained, how to make a VCO by the service team chaired by Prof. Dr. Suryani MSi, at their own expense. In the process of making VCO, the waste, which is in the form of coconut water, is wasted. Partners do not have knowledge about the use of coconut water waste into Nata de coco, as well as used as food and beverages that can be sold and make money. The purpose of the service is to utilize the waste produced by VCO, namely coconut water into Nata de coco and its drinks, to improve the economy of the orphanage. This service program is carried out through training in making Nata de Coco from coconut water and making drinks from Nata de Coco. As a result, Mitra has marketed its products, by serving orders for the procurement of drinks from Nata de Coco at the Wedding Party. So that it has generated an average monthly income of Rp. 6,750,000. This program has succeeded in increasing Partners' income

Pertumbuhan Eksplan Pisang Cavendish Tahap Subkultur dengan Penambahan Bahan Organik pada Media Murashige and Skoog

The productivity of cavendish bananas needs to be increased to meet the large export demand. Tissue culture techniques can produce large quantities of good-quality seedlings. This technique can use organic materials such as coconut water and bean sprout extract, which are easy to obtain at a relatively low price. This study aims to determine the effect of using coconut water and bean sprout extract on the growth of cavendish banana explants in vitro. This experiment was prepared using a completely random design (CRD) consisting of 12 treatments, namely coconut water and bean sprout extract, with concentrations of 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 17.5%, and 20%, respectively. The results showed that the use of coconut water was better than bean sprout extract. Treatment with coconut water at a concentration of 7.5% had the highest average value on the parameters of plantlet length. At a concentration of 12.5%, it had the highest average value on the plantlet length parameter. Meanwhile, in the concentration of coconut water, coconut water has the best concentration of 20% in the number of roots.

Optimization of Mustard Pakcoy Growth: The Influence of Media Composition and Coconut Water Concentration

This research aimed to investigate the effect of different media compositions and varying coconut water concentrations on the growth and yield of mustard pakcoy (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis). The study was conducted in Modong Village, Sidoarjo Regency, with further laboratory analysis at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo. The experimental design followed a Randomized Block Design (RAK) in a factorial arrangement with two primary factors (media composition and coconut water concentration) and four replications. While no significant interaction was observed between the media composition and the coconut water concentration, independent effects of each factor were notable. The media composition significantly influenced the leaf count at 7, 28, and 35 days after planting (DAP) and the wet weight at 35 DAP. The optimum media composition included 2 kg of topsoil, 90 g of goat manure, and 45 g of rice husk charcoal per polybag, which resulted in the highest leaf count and wet weight. Additionally, coconut water concentration significantly affected the stem diameter at 35 DAP, with a concentration of 100 ml per liter of water yielding the maximum stem diameter. The findings imply potential growth optimization strategies for mustard pakcoy, enhancing yields via targeted alterations in growing media and the use of coconut water, which could be of international interest to agronomists, horticultural scientists, and sustainable agriculture practitioners.

PENINGKATAN KUALITAS PERKECAMBAHAN BIJI CENDANA (Santalum Album LINN.) DENGAN LAMA PERENDAMAN MENGGUNAKAN AIR KELAPA DAN BAWANG MERAH

Sandalwood (Santalum album Linn.) is an endemic plant that is the identity of the people of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Generative propagation by means of seed soaking treatment is one of the alternatives to sandalwood plant propagation. Factors that are known to affect the success of plant propagation are Growth Regulators (ZPT) and the duration of soaking. This study was conducted to determine the use of coconut water and shallots as well as the effect of soaking duration for sandalwood growth. The research method uses a Complete Randomized Design (RAL) using a factorial design of 2 (two) factors, namely the first factor in the use of coconut water and shallots consisting of 3 levels, namely aquades (control), air kelapa 75% and bawang merah 75% and The second factor includes the length of soaking which consists of 3 levels, namely the Soaking Time of 9 Hours, 18 Hours, and 27 Hours. The results of this study showed that the treatment of the use of Coconut Water and Shallots and the combination of treatments did not have a real effect on germination, germination speed index, germination value and wet weight, while the length of soaking had a significant effect on the germination power and has avery noticeable influence on the sandalwood germinating speed index (Santalum album LINN).

Coconut water-based extender for seminal preservation in small ruminants: A meta-analysis study

Semen extenders based on egg yolk and milk have been widely used in seminal preservation. However, they present health risks due to the transmission of pathogens. Therefore, new studies have emerged seeking for a diluent of vegetable origin, capable of guaranteeing sperm quality and eliminating the risk of contamination. In light of the above, a meta-analytical review was conducted to determine the effect of coconut water as a seminal extender for small ruminants’ sperm preservation. According to the selection criteria, 88 independent comparisons were obtained from the studies included in the meta-analysis. The weighted mean difference (WMD) between treatments with coconut water (diluents including coconut water) and control treatments (diluents without the addition of coconut water) was evaluated using the random-effects model of meta-analysis. Heterogeneity was explored by meta-regression and subgroup analysis, performed using as covariate: type of coconut water, types of control treatment to which coconut water was contrasted, type of preservation, preservation time and animal species. The overall results showed coconut water elicited a positive effect on total motility of sperm cells from cooled semen (P < 0.05), while for the fresh and cryopreserved semen no significant effect was observed. In addition, coconut water showed a positive effect on membrane integrity of sperm cells from fresh semen (P < 0.05). On the other hand, for cooled semen, a negative result was found (P < 0.05). Therefore, the use of coconut water as a seminal extender proved to be a viable alternative for seminal preservation in small ruminants.

Production of Bacterial Cellulose in the Medium with Yeasts Pre-Fermented Coconut Water or with Addition of Selected Amino Acids.

The uncontrolled natural pre-fermentation process of coconut water represents great hidden safety hazards, unstable production, and impact on the quality of nata de coco-the trade name of bacterial cellulose (BC) in food industry. In this study, BC production from Komagataeibacter nataicola Q2 was conducted in the media of coconut water (50%, v/v) pre-fermented by 11 coconut-sourced yeast strains in static. Results suggested that coconut water pre-fermented by different yeast strains had varied effects on the production of BC. Compared with the use of fresh coconut water, the use of coconut water pre-fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae SC7 increased the BC yield by 165%. Both natural pre-fermentation and SC7 pre-fermentation altered the concentrations of amino acids in fresh coconut water. The addition of selected amino acids aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, methionine, threonine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, and proline at different concentrations had varied effects on the production of BC. The yield of BC was the highest when adding 3.0% (w/v) methionine. Moreover, adding 3.0% methionine allowed the production of BC with larger loops of looser aggregated microfibers, increased the crystallinity of BC from 64.8% to 69.4%, but decreased the temperature of maximum weight loss rate, hardness, and adhesiveness from 223 °C, 8.68 kg, and 92.8 g.sec to 212 °C, 7.01 kg, and 58.5 g.sec, respectively, in the test condition.

PEMANFAATAN LIMBAH AIR KELAPA UNTUK MENINGKATKAN AKUMULASI FOTOSINTAT DAN LUAS DAUN BIBIT KAKAO (Theobroma cacao L.)

Indonesia is one of the cocoa producers in the world, but Indonesia's cocoa production is still below the Ivory Coast and Ghana. One of the ways to increase production is by using good seeds. Good seeds can be obtained with optimal maintenance. Through the use of coconut water as waste containing nutrients and growth hormones, it is expected to increase growth components such as dry weight and leaf area. Good seeds when planted in the field will produce well too. The experiment was carried out in April – August 2021, in the Ciparanje experimental garden, Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor with an altitude of 725-800 masl. The experiment used a Randomized Block Design (RAK) with ten treatment combinations and was repeated three times, each treatment consisting of four plants. The treatments tested were control, urea 2 g/polybag, administration of coconut water through plants at 100%, 75%, and 50% calibration doses, administration of coconut water through soil 100%, 75%, and 50% dose of field capacity, administration of coconut water. through plants 25% calibration dose + through soil 25% dose field capacity, and giving coconut water through plants 50% calibration dose + through soil 50% dose field capacity. The experimental results showed that the best response on dry weight and leaf area of ​​cocoa seedlings was caused by giving coconut water through plants with 50% calibration dose.

Stek Tumbuhan Kebiul (Caesalpinia sp.) Berbantuan Air Kelapa sebagai Hormon Pertumbuhan Alami

Caesalpinia sp. is a popular traditional medicinal plant in Bengkulu, but people have not cultivated it and still harvest it from nature. Efforts towards cultivation must begin before these plants are rare because in nature will run out. In this study measure the growth of Kebiul plant cuttings with the help of natural hormones from 3 variants of coconut water consist of: young, medium and old coconut water, which will be compared with synthetic growth regulators (rootone-F) and controls (without treatment). The study was carried out for six weeks with twelve observations, measurements were made in the afternoon, with the parameters of observing the shoots (the growth number, growth time, growth rate), shoots number and leaves number.The results showed that the percentage of the number of seedlings growing was (P3:41.67%; P1:33.33%; P2:25%; P4: 16.67%; P5: 8.33%), Growing time (days) namely (P5: 23; P1: 23.25; P3: 23.29; P2: 24.25; P4: 40.5), Growth rate (P2: 0.81; P3: 0.59; P5: 0.18; P1: 0.12; P4: 0.04 ), Average number of shoots (P3: 1.4; P2: 1.3; P1: 1; P4: 1; P5: 1), and Average number of leaves (P2: 2.67; P3: 1, 92; P1:0; P4:0; P5:0).The use of coconut water on Kebiul plant cuttings, with the best results sequentially P3 (young coconut water), P2 (medium coconut water), and P1 (old coconut water).

THE DIFFERENCE OF COCONUT VARIETIES AND TEMPERATURE IN CARRAGEENAN EXTRACTION FROM SEAWEED (EUCHEUMA COTTONII)

The use of coconut water as a natural solvent is needed in the extraction of carrageenan, as an alternative to the use of KOH as a synthetic solvent. This study aims to examine the effect of using coconut water from two different varieties of coconuts as solvents and different extraction temperature in extracting carrageenan. The study was conducted in 2 steps. Step 1 was carrageenan carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii with coconut water solvent, then analyzing the physicochemical characteristics of the carrageenan produced such as yield, gel strength, viscosity, moisture and ash content. Step 2 was the application to chicken meatball. The results showed that the the best carrageenan in this study was carrageenan that was extracted with solvent from hybrid coconut water and temperature of 80°C with a yield of 75.48%, gel strength of 579.874 g/cm 2 , viscosity of 5.1 cps, moisture content of 10.85% and ash content 11.32%. Application of the best carrageenan from the best treatment produced chicken meatballs with chewiness of 49.26 N, brightness of 73.35, a value of 0.95 and b value of 11.6 . The use of coconut water (cocos nucifera l.) as alternative media to substitute Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for the growth of aspergillus flavus

Media is a material composed by mixed nutrition to grow microorganisms, common media to grow fungi is Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). It contains 10 g of epton, 40 g of dextrose and 15 g of agar. This study used various concentration of coconut water (20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. The aim of this study is to determine the concentration of coconut water that can be used to replace Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for the growth of Aspergillus flavus and to determine the difference of colony diameter of Aspergillus flavus and to determine the difference of colony diameter of Aspergillus flavus. Macroscopic observation of colony diameter (mm) has been done in 1 x 24 hours for 10 days using calipers with Lactophenol Cotton Blue (SDA) dyes for affirmation test. Data was analyzed statistically using One Way Anova continued by Post hoc test. It showed that the higher the concentration of coconut water, the bigger the diameter colony (sig. 0,00 < 0,05). Post hoc test showed that coconut water concentration of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60% gave lower significant growth of the fungus than Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media, while the concentration of 70%, 80%, and 90% gave non – significant value or similar to wards control media Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). The concentration it can be concluded that coconut water can be used as an alternative media to substitute SDA (Aspergillus flavus) for the growth of Aspergillus flavus.

Pelatihan Pembuatan Nata de coco di Perkebunan Kelapa Desa Margomulyo Kecamatan Seyegan Kabupaten Sleman

Coconut plants are very potential commodities, all parts of the coconut plant are beneficial to the needs of human life. All parts of coconuts are not wasted and can be used to produce industrial products. The partners are coconut farmers who sell peeled coconut and coconut flesh. Farmers in Margomulyo village have difficulty in handling the waste of untreated coconut water. Sometimes the coconut water causes inundated land without being used. Sometimes when the coconut water is not directly absorbed in the ground, it will cause bad odor in the environment. Therefore, the use of coconut water is a way to optimize the use of coconut fruit. The content of sucrose sugar in coconut water will be used by Acetobacter xylinum as a source of energy, as well as a carbon source to form metabolite compounds such as cellulose that form Nata de Coco. In conclusion, Nata de coco making training in Margomulyo village gave positive response for the community to establish business unit. The barrier to the implementation of this activity was that there was no solution for handling waste production of Nata de coco of which aroma was quite disturbing. Thus, the implementation of nata de coco waste treatment program will be overcomed in further implementation of community service program which will be held in the next period

Development of Kamias (&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Averrhoa bilimbi L.&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;) Jam with Coconut Water

Processing of fruits to become a staple commodity is one way of addressing the cost and challenge of getting good nutrition at a lower price, especially if it maximizes the use of readily available and underutilized fruit as a source of food and nutrition. The high nutritional value of fruits that can help promote good health and well-being offers many opportunities for consumers. This paper aimed to describe the development of Kamias (<i>Averrhoa bilimbi L.</i>) in coconut water jam as a practical gourmet alternative that can be economically competitive in the market and can be made affordable to many. Its unique underrated nutritional value makes it even more, a revelation among the big names in the gourmet world. In order to maximize the nutritional benefits of this fruit at the same time to make known its potential operational utility, this paper describes the development of the kamias jam, its nutritional value, and its health benefits as stated in various studies that validate its nutritional and medicinal advantages and beneficial side effects. The use of coconut water enhances the sensory attributes in terms of the flavor and texture of the kamias jam. The development of value-added products from the kamias jam can generate good nutrition in the community and livelihood in the locality.

Use of coconut water (Cocus nucifera L) for the development of a symbiotic functional drink

Many studies suggest that probiotic, prebiotic and symbiotic foods may be beneficial in the prevention and management of nutrition and health, the objective of this work was to develop a symbiotic drink based on coconut water. Fermentation was performed using lyophilized Lactobacillus rhamnosus SP1 and inulin as a source of soluble fiber. Different formulations were developed, determining the concentrations of fiber and probiotics. The growth of the probiotic in MRS broth was evaluated, using the plate counting technique in different periods of time. The fermentation time of the drink was 8 h and the shelf life in refrigeration was 14 days evaluated by pH and hedonic scale. The pH of the final drink was 3.48 and the probiotic content was 82 × 10 8 CFU/ml. It is concluded that coconut water can be processed by adding probiotic and prebiotic characteristics with sensory acceptance and adequate preservation characteristics.

The effect of Andromed® and coconut water + 20% egg yolk as diluent on semen motility of Belgian Blue cattle

The purpose of this study was to observed the potential use of coconut water + 20% egg yolk (CW) as an alternative diluent to replace Andromed®, on semen motility of Belgian Blue (BB) cattle. The sample were fresh semen collected from 3 years old BB using artificial vagina. The fresh semen was diluted into Andromed® diluent (P1) and coconut water + 20% egg yolk (P2). The semen motility (%) was observed at 0, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after dilution and then compared between group using t-test. The result showed that Andromed® found to give better motility compared to CW in all observation time. The average of semen motility (%) in accordance with observation time in group P1 was 77,67±2,51, 74,67±2,51, 72,33±2,51, 70,67±1,54, 69,33±1,54, 66,33±2,88 and 63,33±2,88%, respectively. Meanwhile, in P2 was 71,67±2,89, 65,00±5,00, 60,00±5,00, 58,33±2,89, 46,67±7,64, 41,67±7,64 and 26,67±7,64 % respectively. In conclusion, coconut water + 20% egg yolk could be replace the function of Andromed as diluent for AI using liquid semen with maximum storage time no more than 24 hours.

The Response of Botanical Seeds of Trisula and Biru Lancor Shallot Varieties to Coconut Water Treatment

The use of botanical seeds for seedling cultivation has problems related to the number of produced tubers, where in general botanical seeds on average only produce 1-2 tubers. Another problem with the cultivation of shallots with botanical seeds as a source of seedlings is the low growth of seeds (germination). To overcome the problems that exist in botanical seeds, growth regulators are used. This study aimed to determine the effect of coconut water treatment on the growth and yield of Trisula and Biru Lancor shallot varieties from botanical seeds, carried out from April to August 2018 in Pelem Village in Pare Sub-District, Kediri Regency. The utilized method is soaking the shallot botanical seeds for 4 hours before sowing; the seeds were then sown and planted for a month before being moved to the field. After growing in the field, observations were carried out at 1-week intervals on vegetative and generative growth. Sampling was random, and data was analyzed with t-test/LSD at a level of 5%. The results showed that the botanical seeds of Trisula and Biru Lancor shallot varieties showed different responses to the treatment with young coconut water. The use of coconut water for the Trisula variety led to 70% of plants yielding more than six cloves, while the Biru Lancor variety only had 46.67%. The use of coconut water for the Trisula variety yielded a fresh tuber weight of 71.2 g per plant at harvest; if converted per hectare, the Trisula variety can yield approximately 32 tons of fresh tubers. Meanwhile, the Biru Lancor variety yielded a tuber weight of 57.4 g per plant at harvest, and if converted per hectare, the Biru Lancor variety can yield approximately 26 tons of fresh tubers. Pengaruh Pemberian Berbagai Bahan Zat Pengatur Tumbuh Alami Pada Pertumbuhan Bibit Cempedak (Artocarpus champeden Lour.)

The use of coconut water, green bean sprouts and onions is chosen as natural growth regulator because it is easily obtained at a fairly affordable price. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of various natural growth regulator different concentrations to the growth of cempedak (Artocarpus champeden Lour.) seedlings.The research was conducted from May to July 2018 in the garden of the Tissue Culture Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, Mulawarman University. This study used a factorial Completely Randomized Design with five replications. The first factor was the types of growth regulator, namely: coconut water, green bean sprout extract, and onion extract. The second factor was the concentration of the natural growth regulator substances,consisted of five treatment levels, namely: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mL L-1. The parameters observed were plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, root length, fresh weight (leaves, stems and roots), dry weight (leaves, stems and roots) and leaf area. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance with F-test and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test with a level of 5%. The results showed that there was no interaction between the type and concentration level of the natural growth regulator to the growth of cempedak seedlings.The growth regulator concentrationalso had no significant effect to all growth parameters observed. However, of the type of natural growth regulators showed a significant in the fresh root weight,stem dry weight, and plant height at harvest time.

Uso del agua de coco (Cocos nucifera) como terapia electrolítica intravenosa en caninos deshidratados

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar el uso del agua de coco (AC) aplicada por vía intravenosa en perros. En una primera fase se evaluó la esterilidad e isotonicidad del AC. En una segunda fase se evaluaron los cambios hematológicos producidos 24 horas pos-aplicación del AC por vía intraperitoneal en ratas. En una tercera fase se evaluó la aplicación de AC vía intravenosa en perros con y sin actividad física (n=20, por grupo), donde se determinaron los valores hematológicos, pH y niveles de cloro y sodio antes y después de su aplicación, así como la frecuencia cardiaca, frecuencia respiratoria y temperatura al inicio, a los 15, 30, 45, 60 minutos de iniciada la aplicación y 30 minutos después de la aplicación del AC. Los resultados muestran que el AC es estéril e isotónico, no produjo alteraciones significativas en los valores hematológicos de las ratas ni en los perros sin actividad física. Sin embargo, los perros con actividad física mostraron una reducción del hematocrito a los 30 minutos pos-aplicación y una leve reducción de los niveles de sodio.

Attitude to and cultural determinants of exclusive breastfeeding among childbearing mothers in Nsukka urban area of Enugu State, Nigeria

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding has been found to be effective in reducing infant mortality and morbidity in the contemporary world. This study explored attitude and cultural determinants of EBF among childbearing mothers in Nsukka urban. Data Source and Method: Data from 592 childbearing mothers were collected and analyzed using questionnaire, (SPSS), Chi-square and multiple linear regression. Results: Attitude such as infant’s inability to eat other food after EBF and that male infant should not be exclusively breastfed as well as cultural determinants such as the use of coconut water to loosen intestine and after-birth care were significant with EBF practice. The infant’s inability to eat other food after EBF and after-birth care were predictors of EBF on binary logistic regression. Conclusion: Findings suggest the need for government, healthcare and social workers to raise awareness on the risks of complementary feeding and the importance of EBF for the reduction of infant mortality and the achievement of related sustainable goals.
