Path analysis of social network factors influencing sustainable eco-city development in the northeast of Thailand

In Urban development, diversity respect is needed to prioritize and balance the urban development design for sustainable eco-city development. As a result, this research aimed to investigate the causal factor pathways of social network factors influencing sustainable eco-city development in the northeastern region of Thailand through a quantitative research approach. With the aim to survey insightful information, the analysis unit was conducted at the individual level with three hundred and eighty-three (383) samplings in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani provinces, including univariate analysis and multivariate analysis, using path analysis and multiple linear regression. The study results indicated that two pathways of social network factors influencing sustainable eco-city development were indirect influence factors. The indirect influence factor consists of information exchange, benefits exchange in the network, and members’ role in the social network. Additionally, the study revealed that the pathway has influences through social network types and the economic and social dimensions of sustainable cities (R2 = 0.330). Therefore, this study concluded that sustainable eco-city development should be implemented through community networks and economic and social network development for environmental development through social network types.

Understanding the relationship between land use/land cover changes and air quality: A GIS-based fuzzy inference system approach.

Air pollution is a global issue that demands urgent attention due to its detrimental effects on human health and the environment. Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change is an essential factor that significantly impacts ambient air quality through alterations in emission sources, vegetation cover, natural processes, and urban design. This study investigates the spatio-temporal variation of key air pollutants resulting from urban LULC changes in the Delhi region. Findings reveal a notable increase in pollutant concentrations, particularly particulate matter, in 2019 (PM10: 318.65 ± 45.80 µg/m3) and 2023 (PM10: 383.70 ± 61.49 µg/m3), compared to 2008 (PM10: 246.76 ± 30.66). LULC change analysis demonstrates a rise in built-up areas 24.59%(2008 to 2019), 33.62% (2008 to 2023) and a decline in vegetation cover 27.49% (2008 to 2019),32.37% (2008 to 2023). Correlation analysis indicates a positive correlation between PM10 and urban indices (+ 0.63) and a negative correlation between PM10 and vegetation indices (- 0.61), highlighting the impact of LULC on air quality deterioration. Subsequently, a fuzzy inference system model integrates LULC information to develop an air quality index (AQI). Incorporating LULC changes in AQI assessment offers a realistic approach to address the complexity arising from combined air pollutant effects, surpassing conventional AQI calculation methods. The findings underscore the significance of understanding the impact of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change on ambient air quality in formulating effective air quality management programs and policies. Integrating this knowledge into policymaking is crucial for the successful abatement of air pollution in urbanized areas.

Creating an endless visual space: An Isovist analysis of a small traditional Chinese garden

Traditional Chinese private gardens, as a unique spatial typology, create a maze-like quality through the arrangement of sightlines and pathways, offering occupants a sense of perpetual circulation and boundless time. The rich experiential nature cultivated within these confined spaces, alongside the ecological worldview of “harmony between heaven and humanity,” holds significant relevance for urban landscape design and the sustainable development of urban environments. While there is ample research literature on various aspects of garden spaces, studies exploring how private gardens generate visually infinite and cyclic spatial experiences within limited areas often remain confined to intuitive analysis, lacking concrete and rational explanations. This study employs the method of Isovist Analysis to test the validity of the spatial consciousness of “Limitless vision, Endless recurrence” within the spatial layout and tour organization of traditional private gardens, using the analysis of Isovists at eight scenic spots within the Xiaocanglang Water Courtyard, as well as an examination of visual-spatial changes along both primary and secondary pathways in different tour directions. It is hoped that this research method will serve as a tool for urban designers and landscape architects to assess spatial-visual characteristics and experiences during the design phase.

Investigation of impact of community environment factors on the residents’ visiting rate to outdoor venues in South China

Understanding the activity patterns of urban residents is crucial for urban community design and urban energy forecasting. Predicting the visitation rates of different types of locations is a important issue because urban residents can only be in one place at a time. Achieving accurate predictions of outdoor public space visitation rates is equivalent to predicting the upper limit of the number of visitors to other buildings. Previous similar studies usually rely on survey methods such as questionnaires and GPS positioning. These methods have some drawbacks, such as small sample sizes and inaccurate data. In this paper, we used mobile signaling to investigate the park visit rates of residents in different communities in Guangzhou. In accordance with Chinese tradition, we define a community as a residential community, which consists of multiple residential units and a set of basic service facilities and management structures that are sufficient to meet the daily needs of residents. We found that the park visit rate of a community is closely related to the characteristics of the community itself. The park visit rate is positively correlated with the average LST (land surface temperature) of the communities, the average distance between the community and the large park, and the building coverage rate, while it is negatively correlated with the vegetation coverage rate, the average surface reflection rate, the convenience of transportation, and the per capita green space area. Given the different travel habits of urban residents on weekdays and weekends, we also used multiple linear regression to establish prediction models for community park visitation rates on weekdays and weekends.

Addressing Urban Sprawl: is Densification the Solution? A Case Study of Sétif, Algeria

Objectives: The rapid and uncontrolled urban growth in Sétif, northeastern Algeria, has resulted in horizontal densification, continual expansion, and the conversion of agricultural land into urban areas. This transformation highlights the need for effective territorial strategies to manage urban growth sustainably. The primary objective of this study is to promote urban densification through concepts like "inward urbanisation" and "building the city within the city," aiming to optimise land use and counter the negative impacts of urban sprawl. Methods: To address the challenges of urban sprawl and its environmental impacts, the study employs a morphological approach. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is utilised in conjunction with data from the General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH) to analyse spatiotemporal changes in Sétif. This methodological approach enables a detailed examination of the city's morphological and demographic evolution, providing insights into patterns of urban expansion and densification. Results: The findings reveal various strategies for urban development in Sétif, focusing on alternatives to traditional urban density and sprawl. The study identifies and suggests the implementation of new, dense, and hybrid urban forms that align with sustainable development goals. These urban forms are designed to enhance the city’s livability while respecting societal needs and environmental considerations. The strategies proposed address the necessity for adaptable urban designs that support a more compact, resource-efficient city model. Conclusion: This research underscores the importance of rethinking urban planning strategies to manage rapid urbanisation in Sétif. The proposed strategies are essential for transforming Sétif into a dense, sustainable, and appealing urban environment. The study advocates for a shift from expansive urban growth to a densification model that promotes sustainability and aligns with the evolving expectations of the city’s residents.

Artificial Intelligence as Research Methods in Urban Design

This paper delves into the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in urban design, focusing on its capability to manage complex urban systems via paradigm classification and comparative analysis. It methodically explores how AI improves design generation, optimizes morphology, and simulates real-world scenarios, thereby enhancing design quality and efficiency throughout the urban design process. Furthermore, the study contributes to the development of comprehensive AI evaluation criteria, integrating both theoretical and practical perspectives to critically understand the advantages and limitations of AI in urban design applications.

Water Sensitive Urban Design Construction Systems Performance Due to Water Retention

Objectives: The main goal of this research is to analyze and quantify reduction of surface temperatures (Ts) in systems which retain and especially harvest water with the focus on blue roofs and to check if just infiltrating water is enough to reduce surface temperatures. Theoretical Framework: ODS13, Climate action; ODS11 Sustainable Cities and communities; Water Sensitive Urban Design construction systems thermal behavior and Cooling water effect implemented by Governments and Municipalities. Method: it’s experimental, based on the quantification of different WSUD construction systems which infiltrate, retain and harvest water during a first year and focused on a blue roof prototype during a second year. Tools used are a thermal camera, a hygrometer and an anemometer. Results and Discussion: Surface temperatures gradients were from 5.3ºC at the infiltration basin, to 6ºC in the blue roof prototype to 14.6ºC in the built blue roof. Construction systems which could retain and harvest water had a Ts underneath the environmental one. They also retain less heat during the night contributing less to UHI than those which can’t retain water. Research implications: this research provides the information about water powerful effect in construction systems which infiltrate and harvest water. They contribute to the decrease of UHI. Originality/value: results demonstrate water cooling effect in infiltrating surfaces which can retain it. Results offer one more construction systems choice criteria in urban design.

Introducing Landmarks: The Tugu Yogyakarta's Popularity in Literature Review and Online Media

This paper explores the cultural and urban significance of Tugu Yogyakarta, a famous monument in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Located at the city's main crossroads, Tugu Yogyakarta is essential to Yogyakarta's Philosophical Axis, symbolizing the city's identity and pride. This analysis examines the academic discourse and social media presence of Tugu Yogyakarta, highlighting the monument's historical, cultural, and urban importance. The study emphasizes the role of social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok in promoting the monument to a broader audience through visual and interactive content, with virtual reality (VR) technology discussed to provide virtual tours, increasing public engagement and awareness without time and distance limitations. The findings expose that academic literature, predominantly produced by Indonesian researchers, focuses on cultural heritage, urban design, and educational roles, while the topic is just starting to gain attention internationally. The social media analysis shows strong public engagement, with hashtags like #tugujogja widely used, reflecting the monument's cultural significance. This study combines a literature review with social media data analysis, making it a unique approach to comprehensively assess the monument's popularity and public awareness of its historical and cultural value. The social media data was analyzed using Gephi and Excel to calculate hashtag frequency and visualize network interactions. The findings show the critical contribution of Tugu Yogyakarta to the sustainability of cultural heritage preservation. The study highlights the synergistic relationship between academic research and the social media presence in promoting Tugu Yogyakarta, with digital platforms significantly boosting its visibility and public engagement. In conclusion, this study provides a multifaceted analysis of Tugu Yogyakarta, integrating cultural aspects, urban elements, and city marketing strategies. Successful promotion of the monument through academic works and social media can enhance heritage conservation and strengthen the public's engagement with Yogyakarta's historical landmarks.

Exploring the correlation between tree structure characteristics and carbon storage in historic gardens using TLS technology: a case study of Jian Xin Pavilions at Jingyi Park, Fragrant Hills Park

Historic gardens contain a greater number and variety of ancient trees, which are older, have unique forms, and larger volumes. These trees hold significant value in both natural ecosystems and cultural heritage. However, current research on the carbon sequestration value of ancient and non-ancient trees in historical gardens is relatively lacking. Based on the unique morphology and carbon storage estimation needs of ancient trees in historic gardens, this paper proposes a morphology-based point cloud single-tree segmentation method. This method can precisely extract the morphological structures of various tree species and accurately estimate their carbon storage. From the perspective of carbon sequestration, it evaluates the correlation between the structural characteristics and carbon storage of trees in historic gardens, as well as the potential changes in their carbon storage capacity.Using the Jing Yi Park’s Jian Xin Pavilions in Fragrant Hills Park as a case study, this method was applied to extract structural indicators of 116 ancient and non-ancient trees. The total carbon storage was found to be 19,171.13 kg, with an average carbon storage of 165.27 kg per tree. Among these, ancient trees accounted for 13,178.32 kg, or 68.74% of the total carbon storage. The study revealed that the correlation between tree age and carbon storage varied by species, and there were significant positive correlations between carbon storage and tree height, DBH, and canopy volume. Notably, there was a significant linear growth trend between DBH, canopy volume, and carbon storage. By 2030, the total carbon storage is projected to increase to 21,924.96 kg, with an annual average increase of 393.40 kg, representing a growth rate of 14.4%.The results indicate that studying the correlation between structural characteristics and carbon storage of aged trees in historical gardens can shed light on the important role of trees in sustainable carbon sequestration. The precise extraction of tree information through 3D digital technology and the prediction of carbon storage potential not only offer new perspectives for the conservation of cultural heritage in historical gardens, urban microclimate planning and design, and spatial management of carbon sinks and emissions but also have significant value for promoting the scientific management and protection of urban green spaces.

Driving Safety and Comfort Enhancement in Urban Underground Interchanges via Driving Simulation and Machine Learning

Urban transportation systems, particularly underground interchanges, present significant challenges for sustainable and resilient urban design due to their complex road geometries and dense traffic signage. These challenges are further compounded by the interaction of diverse road users, which heightens the risk of accidents. To enhance both safety and sustainability, this study integrates advanced driving simulation techniques with machine learning models to improve driving safety and comfort in underground interchanges. By utilizing a driving simulator and 3D modeling, real-world conditions were replicated to design key traffic safety features with an emphasis on sustainability and driver well-being. Critical safety parameters, including speed, acceleration, and pedal use, were analyzed alongside comfort metrics such as lateral acceleration and steering torque. The LightGBM machine learning model was used to classify safety and comfort grades with an accuracy of 97.06%. An important ranking identified entrance signage and deceleration zones as having the greatest impact on safety and comfort, while basic road sections were less influential. These findings underscore the importance of considering visual cues, such as markings and wall color, in creating safer and more comfortable underground road systems. This study’s methodology and results offer valuable insights for urban planners and engineers aiming to design transportation systems that are both safe and aligned with sustainable urban mobility objectives.

Urban design leadership: Part 2, the case of public architects

AbstractThis paper, in two parts, explores the styles and application of urban design leadership as a dimension of urban design governance. This second part takes the theoretical framework for understanding urban design leadership developed in Part 1 and applies the theory to the varied practices of public architects across Europe. Based on interviews with protagonists involved in the delivery of these roles, the paper teases out how these functions can be understood in terms of leadership. Ultimately, urban design leadership is not a simple thing that should be replicated according to a standard formula from place to place. Instead, as the case of public architects demonstrates, in different ways that relate to opportunities provided by local governance and political traditions, such roles demonstrate the value of urban design as a form of design leadership at the urban scale. Their analysis also demonstrates the value of the framework advanced in Part 1, which proves to be a robust means to interrogate forms and episodes of urban design leadership. It provides a starting point for a research agenda that is ripe for further investigation.

Exploring the role of the built environment and psychosocial mediators on knee function in knee osteoarthritis patients in Singapore: a cross-sectional study.

(1) To examine if a more accessible built environment (BE) is significantly associated with better knee function outcomes in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. (2) To assess if the relationship between BE and knee function is mediated by fear of movement and self-efficacy. Cross-sectional study. Two tertiary hospitals in Singapore. 212 knee OA patients (mean: 63.81±8.27 years old), majority female (69.8%). (i) meets National Institute for Health and Care Excellence criteria for knee OA, (ii) independent community ambulant. (i) alternative diagnosis to knee OA, (ii) secondary osteoarthritis, (iii) severe medical and/or cognitive comorbidity impairing activities of daily living, (iv) previous knee arthroplasty, (v) wheelchair bound, or (vi) pregnant. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES; STATISTICS: How self-efficacy (Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale-8 (ASES-8)) and fear of movement (Brief Fear of Movement (BFOM)) mediates impact of overall BE (IPAQ-Environment module: Access to Destinations) and five item-specific domains of BE accessibility on knee function (Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-12 (KOOS-12)). For variables significantly correlated with BE and KOOS-12 in bivariate Pearson correlation tests, mediation analysis was performed with confounders adjusted. Total BE (r=0.142, p=0.038) and accessibility to transit station (r=0.161, p=0.019) were positively correlated with KOOS-12. Structural barriers (r=-0.138, p=0.045) were negatively correlated with KOOS-12. ASES-8 was a significant mediator in the relationship between accessibility to transit station and KOOS-12 (coeff=0.87, 95% CI=(0.24, 1.69), p=0.005) and between total BE and KOOS-12 (coeff=0.25, 95% CI=(0.10, 0.45), p=0.004). BFOM was a marginally significant mediator between structural barriers and KOOS-12 (coeff=-0.36, 95% CI=(-0.86, -0.02); p=0.054). More accessible BE and lesser structural barriers in the BE are associated with better knee function. Self-efficacy mediates the relationship between overall BE accessibility and knee function. Fear of movement mediates the negative association between barriers in the BE and knee function.Applications include assessing BE barriers and psychosocial mediators in clinician consultations, developing multidisciplinary integrated care models and urban designers planning mobility friendly BEs. Design of heat-resilient housing in hot-arid regions

Extreme heat events in urban areas increasingly challenge the capacity of electrical distribution systems to serve building cooling equipment under peak loads and, when power is interrupted, the thermal response of buildings that can delay the onset of dangerously high indoor temperatures. The design of new buildings and their operation can mitigate the risks of intense heatwaves, but architects and planners face a myriad of choices about what measures to select, and how best to estimate their individual and collective performance. To aid the design and operation of heat-resilient buildings, this paper takes a multidisciplinary approach that is novel in two key aspects. First, it evaluates the individual and aggregated impact of factors associated with architectural and urban design, equipment technologies, and human behavior. Second, its valuation metrics include the magnitude of peak electrical load, appropriate for assessing active measures aimed at reducing peak power, and the time after a power outage for indoor temperatures to reach levels associated with heat stress, an indication of the efficacy of passive (no power) measures. The application of the method in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, where growing populations and demand for space cooling make it particularly relevant, relies on knowledge of building codes and local construction practice. Single-factor testing shows that pre-cooling produces the largest reduction in peak electrical load during a simulated four-day heatwave, followed by building adjacency, maximum temperature set point and equipment loads. A combination of all considered factors reduces peak power by 70% and shifts the reduced peak to a later hour. In response to a power outage, the incorporation of architectural factors (roof, wall and window thermal resistance above code minima, increased thermal mass, reduced glazing solar heat gain coefficient and window shading) reduces the time above a Heat Index of 28 °C (caution) in a week-long test period in which the power failure occurs at hour 40 from 119 to 53 h. The presented methodology applies broadly to other building types and to regions affected by very hot weather.

Pharmacy 2050: A New Clinical and Patient Experience

With the changing demographics of the US population and evolving shift in urban design, the physical experience at the community level will change how health care is delivered. This will allow for more personalized and localized care complemented by digital technologies and smart devices over the next 25 years. At the same time, the evolution of clinical research with prevention, vaccinations, 3D printing, drone delivery, CRISPR, and implantables, will change the pharmaceutical landscape. Pharmacists and pharmacies have an opportunity to evolve with these changes making their role an integral part of the care team, but it is important that regulations and reimbursement also change. By 2050, pharmacists may play very different roles from clinical specialists to digital coaches and use data, AI, and technology to help drive outcomes while robots and technology automate many of their current repetitive tasks.

Government Obligations and the Negative Right to a Healthy Urban Environment.

Urban development often generates noise and light pollution, reduces green space, produces heat islands, and increases population density that can exacerbate crime, disease transmission, anxiety, and stress. This article argues that individuals and communities have rights to not have their space impinged upon by urban plans, designs, or development. This negative right means governments have ethical obligations to develop infrastructure that mitigates adverse health consequences, preserves natural environments, safeguards ecological well-being, and promotes peace and public health.

Investigating the response of urban surface thermal environment to urban morphology changes in Nanjing

The urbanization process has significantly impacted urban morphology, which in turn has led to changes in the urban surface thermal environment (USTE). A summarization of the empirical patterns of past urban morphology changes and an evaluation of the USTE effects produced by different patterns will contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge regarding the response of USTE to urban morphology changes and facilitate the development of sustainable urban planning and design practices. This study investigated the response of USTE to urban morphology from the overall and local based on the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) framework during 2005–2020 in Nanjing. The results validated the rationality of the LCZ framework for describing urban morphology changes and their USTE responses. It was found that the overall USTE was continuing to deteriorate, with an increase in high temperature and sub-high temperature areas. LCZ 4, LCZ 5, and LCZ 8 were the major contributors to overall urban heat, and their growth in the amount and changes in USTE characteristics mainly caused the overall USTE deterioration. In localized areas, it was found that urban regeneration had the most potential to optimize USTE. The conversion processes of LCZ 5 to LCZ 4, LCZ 8 to LCZ 4, and LCZ 8 to LCZ 5 were considered more advantageous in improving daytime USTE, which should be advocated. The results can provide important insights into the perception of urban morphology and USTE, and support the urban regeneration policies for climate-resilient cities from the environmental performance perspective.

Data augmented planning: A data-driven approach to measuring-understanding-optimizing green justice across 263 Chinese cities

Urban Green Spaces (UGS) are pivotal in fostering sustainable urban environments, with disparities in access to UGS raising concerns about 'green justice'. Existing research often focuses on the socioeconomic influences on green justice, overlooking the role of urban green planning and design. To address this, we evaluated green justice levels across 263 Chinese cities using extensive geospatial data and explainable machine learning techniques. Our findings highlight a significant relationship between the planar configuration of UGS and green justice. Notably, these associations are non-linear, showing threshold effects where certain UGS characteristics beyond specific values can adversely affect green justice. The study also identifies interaction effects among these spatial characteristics. Our results offer practical guidelines for urban planning to enhance green justice, especially in China's large cities. Recommendations include optimizing green space morphology and proximity, and reconfiguring the layout of various green spaces. This research provides valuable insights and strategies for promoting green justice, particularly in densely populated cities in developing nations like China.

The Role of Marine Energy Production in The Development of Urban Infrastructure with Tidal Power Plants

Marine structures, designed and built to develop urban infrastructure, play a very important role in improving access to marine resources, protecting beaches, and facilitating urban and marine communications. These structures can be influential in different parts of urban development. This article, marine energy production facilities with a focus on tidal power plants, which include types of tidal power plants, how they work, the effect of power plants on urban development, design and construction, advantages and challenges, and their comparison. Together with each other. Also, the contribution of each of the tidal power plants in marine energy production facilities is shown to provide a better understanding of the users of this article. These types of structures in addition to economic development and infrastructure improvement Transportation also help to protect the environment and the sustainable use of natural resources, which is why familiarizing and investigating these types of structures and the role they play in the development of urban infrastructure is of particular importance and needs Further investigations using numerical modelling and laboratory methods will be necessary to achieve accurate and reliable engineering results

Urban heat islands’ effects on the thermo-energy performance of buildings according to their socio-economic factors

Urban areas experience the urban heat island (UHI) effect, which affects the thermal comfort and energy consumption of buildings. These consequences could vary depending on the socio-economic status of the neighbourhoods. Few studies have investigated how UHI affects socio-economically contrasting districts in thermal comfort and energy performance. Therefore, the primary goal of this research is to evaluate and compare the energy efficiency and thermal comfort conditions of residential buildings in the same city (Temuco, Chile) but located in socio-economically contrasting neighbourhoods. Urban weather files were first modelled in four urban zones using UWG software. Also, EnergyPlus building simulations were conducted to evaluate discomfort hours in adaptive comfort models and energy performance. The results showed annual average UHI intensities between 1.5 and 2.5 K. Urban–rural cooling energy load differences ranged between 12.47% and 38.92%, while heating energy load differences ranged between -20.47% and -81.95%. These distinctions depended on the urban zone, residence model analysed, or energy building standard applied. Similarly, urban-rural differences in thermal comfort times varied from 0.5% to 100%. Results illustrate that the risk of overheating could increase in socio-economically vulnerable areas. This issue could worsen if urban segregation continues to generate poor urban design in low-income districts.
