Government Efforts in Promoting Community Participation in the Development of Village Roads

This research departs from the problem of the decreasing level of community participation in cooperation such as to maintain what already exists; in other respects, it can be said that drainage or ditches are not cared for so that water freely finds its way, causing damage to the main road and unstable soil conditions and broken roads. This study aims to determine the government's efforts to re-grow the participation of the Kaliguwo village community and the results of village road infrastructure development in Kaliguwo village, Kaliwiro sub-district, Wonosobo. The framework used in this study is development sociology and participation theory. This theory prioritizes economic and sociological aspects. Development is a process of planned and desired change. The opinion stated that development in terms of the process of change, where the change is carried out by the community itself because the desire for change itself is a community, because it is based on the existence of community needs from various aspects of everyday human life. Here, the government provides examples or describes ideas so that the community can work together with village officials to carry out activities in the form of togetherness and submit deliberations on how to do so that the community can carry out activities as usual in cooperation or activities related to this development. Even though not all people participate, road infrastructure development must continue. Because with the construction of road infrastructure, the community's economy is increasing and vehicles are getting easier in and out of the village.

Lipid‐enhanced Oilcane does not impact soil carbon dynamics compared with wild‐type Sugarcane

AbstractThe carbon neutral potential of bioenergy relies in part on the ability of feedstocks to sequester carbon (C) in the soil. Sugarcane is one of the most widely used bioenergy crops, yet there remain unknowns about how it impacts soil C dynamics. In addition, Oilcane, a genetically modified version of Sugarcane has been produced to accumulate more energy‐dense oils and less soluble lignin, which enhances conversion efficiency but may also impact soil C cycling. Thus, our objectives were to examine the impact of Sugarcane litter decomposition on soil C formation and losses and determine if the genetic modifications to produce Oilcane alter these dynamics. To do this, we incubated bagasse (processed stem litter) and leaf litter from Sugarcane and Oilcane in microcosms with forest soil for 11 weeks. We used differences in natural abundance δ13C between C3 forest soil and C4 litter to trace the fate of the litter into respiratory losses as well as stable and unstable soil C pools. Our results show that genetic modifications to Oilcane did not substantially alter soil C dynamics. Sugarcane and Oilcane litter both led to net soil C gains dominated by an accumulation of the added litter as unstable, particulate organic C (POC). Oilcane litter led to small but significantly greater net soil C gains than Sugarcane litter due to greater POC formation, but the formation of stable, mineral associated organic matter (MAOC) did not differ between crop types. Sugarcane and Oilcane had opposing effects on tissue type where Sugarcane bagasse formed more MAOC, while Oilcane leaves preferentially remained as POC which may have important management implications. These results suggest that genetic modifications to Sugarcane will not significantly impact soil C dynamics; however, this may not be universal to other crops particularly if modifications lead to greater differences in litter chemistry.

Micromechanical Analysis of Internal Instability during Shearing

Internal instability means that finer particles pass through the constrictions of coarser particles at a hydraulic gradient well below that of heave or piping, rendering the soil ineffective for its intended purpose. The soil could make a transition from an internally stable state to an unstable state or vice versa due to shear-induced deformation. The discrete element method (DEM) is adopted in this study to examine and quantify soil behavior by simulating the quasi-static shear deformation of internally stable and unstable soils at the micro- and macroscales. The dense bimodal specimens were sheared under drained conditions following a constant mean stress path in order to investigate the influence of stress heterogeneity. At the macroscale, the peak deviatoric stress was found to be a function of the fines content and the initial void ratios of the specimens. The development of the average number of contacts per particle and the stress transfer to the finer fraction during shearing are discussed. The simulation results innovatively show that a dense specimen could undergo a transition from an internally stable to an unstable soil as it dilates during shear. These numerical results have significant implications on the importance of real-life situations, such as predicting mud pumping in railroad tracks.

Diversity of Arbuscular mycorrhizae in landslide areas of Garhwal Region, Uttarakhand, India

Hill slopes in Uttarakhand Himalaya are observed for their largescale slope destabilization. Landslides are among hydro-geological hazard in the fragile geology of the state which cause huge losses in terms of biodiversity, infrastructure, time and human life. This paper highlights presence and diversity of mycorrhizal species in landslides prone areas in locality of selected highways in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Eight (08) AM fungi, viz., G. macrocarpum, G. fasciculatum, F. coronatum, A. laevis, A. foveata, A. tuberculata, A. sporocarpia and A. myriocarpa were found in 20 large landslide areas. Acaulosporaceae was found dominant family followed by Glomeraceae. Spore density of G. macrocarpum was the highest with 13 spores/100 g soil. The percentage of importance value varied from 7.16 to 21.59. Results of present paper may endorse the use of AM fungi in restoration the unstable soil profiles.

Multi-objective Allocation Optimization of Soil Conservation Measures Under Data Uncertainty.

Many regions worldwide face soil loss rates that endanger future food supply. Constructing soil and water conservation measures reduces soil loss but comes with high labor costs. Multi-objective optimization allows considering both soil loss rates and labor costs, however, required spatial data contain uncertainties. Spatial data uncertainty has not been considered for allocating soil and water conservation measures. We propose a multi-objective genetic algorithm with stochastic objective functions considering uncertain soil and precipitation variables to overcome this gap. We conducted the study in three rural areas in Ethiopia. Uncertain precipitation and soil properties propagate to uncertain soil loss rates with values that range up to 14%. Uncertain soil properties complicate the classification into stable or unstable soil, which affects estimating labor requirements. The obtained labor requirement estimates range up to 15 labor days per hectare. Upon further analysis of common patterns in optimal solutions, we conclude that the results can help determine optimal final and intermediate construction stages and that the modeling and the consideration of spatial data uncertainty play a crucial role in identifying optimal solutions.

Peculiarities of photosynthesis in spelt (Tríticum spélta L.) in the Forest Steppe Zone of Ukraine

To identify the influence of the elements of the cultivation technology on the yield structure of spelt. Methods. The research was carried out in the years 2019–2022 at the experimental field of the Scientific Research Center of Bila Tserkva National Agrarian University (Kyiv region) located in the zone of unstable soil moisture of the Right Bank Forest Steppe of Ukraine. Spelt varieties ‘Zoria Ukrainy’, ‘Europe’, and ‘Atterhauer Dinkel’ were grown with the application of foliar fertilizer potassium humate HK‑17 (400 g/ha) in the earing and milk ripeness stages, and Agriflex Amino growth regulator (200 g/ha) in the earing stage. Results. The best indicators of the 1000-kernel weight were obtained with the foliar application of potassium humate HK-17 in the earing stage repeated in the milk ripeness stage in combination with Agriflex Amino growth regulator in the earing stage. Under such conditions, the 1000-kernel weight of the variety ‘Zoria Ukrainy’ was 68.9 g, ‘Yevropa’ 67.5 g, and ‘Atterhauer Dinkel’ 79.0 g. In terms of the influence of factors on the formation of the number of grains per ear, the highest indicators were obtained in the case of foliar application of humate potassium in the earing stage repeated in the milk ripeness stage. Moreover, for the variety ‘Zoria Ukrainy’, the combination with the treatment of plants with the Agriflex Amino growth stimulator in the earing stage was unimportant: in both treatments, 1000-kernel weight of 1.07 g was obtained. ‘Yevropa’ variety produced 1.09 g of grains per ear and ‘Atterhauer Dinkel’ 0.85 g. Conclusions. The highest seed weight per plant was in the ‘Zoria Ukrainy’ variety: 1.28–1.29 g was provided in the case of foliar application of potassium humate HK-17 in the earing stage repeated in the milk ripeness stage. At the same time, with the combination of humates and growth regulator Agriflex Amino in the earing stage, the weight of grains per plant in the ‘Yevropa’ variety was 1.42 g, and in ‘Atterhauer Dinkel’ 1.36 g, which were the best results of the experiment.

Distribution of mangroves with different aerial root morphologies at accretion and erosion sites in Ca Mau Province, Vietnam

Aerial roots are a vital feature that allow mangroves to survive in anaerobic and unstable soil conditions. Mangrove species have different aerial root characteristics and show their own site-specific distribution. The distribution of three types of aerial roots with different morphological characteristics was investigated between accretion and erosion sites in Ca Mau, Vietnam. Stilt roots, pneumatophores and knee roots were the three main aerial root types in the study area. Stilt roots of Rhizophora apiculata BL. and pneumatophores of Avicennia species were the two most abundant root types at the study sites, dominating erosion and accretion sites, respectively. Stilt roots had a higher number of primary roots in seaward plots than in landward plots (p < 0.05), supporting the ability of R. apiculata to withstand erosion of the surface. Tidal erosion moved away sediment and exposed roots, which resulted in higher aboveground stilt root height in seaward plots than in landward plots at erosion sites (p < 0.05). The higher density and biomass of pneumatophores in seaward plots than those in landward plots at accretion sites (p < 0.05) confirmed the adaptation of Avicennia to newly accreted sites where tidal inundation and anaerobic conditions limited mangrove growth. The density of A. alba decreased with the distance from the sea at both erosion and accretion sites, implying that this species was a pioneer species adapted to newly accreted sites or disturbed sites among mangrove species. Bruguiera parviflora with knee roots was distributed in more stable conditions. Mangrove species with different root types displayed a zonal distribution with increasing distance from the shoreline. This distribution reflects mangrove species adaptabilities and species-specific roles in the context of coastal processes and site conditions, which should be considered in coastal mangrove restoration.

ASPHALT ROAD DAMAGE DETECTION SYSTEM USING CANNY EDGE DETECTION

Road is a means of access for humans to move from one place to another, connecting one place to another, and serving as transportation infrastructure. At all times, asphalt roads are passed by road users, including small, medium, and large vehicles. However, road conditions are not always smooth and often there are damages in certain parts of the road. Factors such as water, weather, temperature changes, unstable soil conditions, air temperature, poor compaction process on the base layer, and the weight or overload of heavy vehicles that exceed capacity, as well as the increasing volume of vehicles, can cause road damage. Road damage can reduce economic revenue and increase accident rates. Some types of asphalt road damage include undulating, potholes, cracking, and asphalt puddles on the road surface. Potholes are the most common type of damage that cause accidents for road users. This study uses the Canny edge detection method to detect asphalt road damage. The minimum object size that can be detected as road damage is 15x15 pixels and the maximum is 290x540 pixels. Testing was conducted on 65 primary data and 35 secondary data, and the average accuracy obtained were 90.5% and 88%, respectively.

Spatial and Temporal Evolution of Particle Migration in Gap-Graded Granular Soils: Insights from Experimental Observations

This study presents physical observations and insights into particle migration characteristics throughout the suffusion process. Using a purpose-built coaxial permeameter cell, suffusion experiments were conducted on idealized internally unstable gap-graded granular soils at varying fines content and hydraulic loading conditions. The specimens were prepared with a mixture layer comprising finer and coarser fractions underlying a coarse layer composed of the coarser fraction alone. This enabled the finer fraction within the mixture layer to migrate through the coarse layer with upward seepage flow. The local porosity profile along the specimen was determined using spatial time-domain reflectometry and an inversion algorithm, which enabled the development of a novel field map of the difference in porosity from the initial condition. This field map provided a visual guide of the spatial and temporal variation in porosity and enabled particle migration internally within the specimen to be quantitatively characterized from onset to progression to washout. The limiting onset condition identified from the field map was shown to be comparable to that obtained using conventional approaches, thereby providing strong validation for the application of porosity-based field maps. As suffusion progressed, the height of infiltrating finer particles into the coarse layer increased linearly with time, while the overall rate of particle migration from the mixture layer to the coarse layer evolved in a non-linear manner with the rate of migration increasing as the specimen reached a complete mixture condition, where the finer fraction infiltrated the entire coarse layer. The attainment of a complete mixture condition was dependent on the fabric of the gap-graded soil. Specimens with an underfilled fabric showed a gradual migration process, while specimens with a transitionally underfilled fabric resulted in minimal particle migration followed by a very rapid formation of the complete mixture.

Coupling of hydraulic loading and surcharge pressure during suffusion in sandy gravels

This study focuses on the coupling effect of the imposed hydraulic gradient and surcharge pressure on fine-particle loss and skeleton deformation during suffusion. A series of suffusion tests were conducted on an internally unstable sandy gravel under four different hydraulic gradients and three surcharge pressures using a large-scale high-pressure erosion apparatus. The total eroded mass, erosion rate and skeleton deformation were comparatively analysed, and the mesoscopic mechanism was discussed preliminarily. The results showed that the hydraulic gradient affected the erosion process not only in terms of the total eroded mass but also the developing pattern and duration of erosion. Surcharge pressure showed an inhibitory effect on fine-particle erosion, whereas a promoting effect on the skeleton deformation. For internally unstable soils, hydraulic gradient and surcharge pressure might have a considerable coupling effect on the fines eroded ratio and its induced strain.

Study on Seismic Response and Vibration Reduction of Shield Tunnel Lining in Coastal Areas

The construction of subway tunnels in the coastal section is affected by special soil quality, with complex construction conditions of unstable soil and vulnerability to groundwater corrosion. The design difficulty of subway tunnels is greatly increased, and the safety performance in the event of an earthquake is greatly reduced. To study the changes in shield tunnel lining structure under earthquake and propose damping measures, ANSYS software is used to conduct tunnel soil numerical simulation. Firstly, static analysis and modal analysis are carried out, and it is found that the maximum displacement deformation occurs at 3.8 cm of the arch crown, and the maximum stress occurs at 2.6 × 107 Pa of the left and right wall corners, 8 easily deformed points are obtained at the same time. Input EI_Centro EW forward 19 s seismic wave is used to analyze the displacement, acceleration and stress vibration characteristics of tunnel lining. The upper part of the lining is more vulnerable to earthquake, and the right arch waist is subject to the maximum stress, reaching 1.37 × 10−4 Pa, the maximum displacement deformation point is 3.65 × 10−10 m at the right wall. To reduce the impact of earthquakes on tunnel lining, the damping scheme of adding an isolation layer is adopted. Using foam concrete isolation material can reduce the stress of the arch waist by 74.6%, and rubber isolation material can reduce the stress by 80%. In consideration of groundwater corrosion and subsequent engineering construction, it is recommended to use foam concrete as the material for the isolation layer. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the design of metro tunnels in offshore areas.

Water competition among the coexisting Platycladus orientalis, Prunus davidiana and Medicago sativa in a semi-arid agroforestry system

Agroforestry has been widely used for the ecological restoration construction of semi-arid regions of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Investigating plant water sources is crucial for understanding the key ecohydrological processes of plant root water uptake and the water relations between coexisting plants. Clarifying the plant water use strategies can help to assess the sustainability of the vegetation restoration in agroforestry systems and provide references for the vegetation management. Thus, we investigated the water use characteristics of plants in an agroforestry system consisting of Platycladus orientalis, Prunus davidiana and Medicago sativa. The δD and δ18O of plant stem water and soil water in the 0–300 cm layer were measured. The MixSIAR model and proportional similarity (PS) were used to quantify the proportion of soil water absorbed by the plants in each layer and the hydrological niche overlap of plants. The results showed that the combined effects of rainfall recharge and evapotranspiration (ET) loss resulted in a decrease in soil water content (SWC) for the agroforestry system with increasing soil depth, and the SWC of the deep layer (80–300 cm) had minor variability (6.1–7.1%) throughout the study period. During the study period, due to the deep soil desiccation, P. orientalis, P. davidiana and M. sativa mainly utilized water from shallow (0–80 cm) soil layers, with a contribution rate of 65.4 ± 8.3%, 64.9 ± 7.7% and 73.0 ± 0.2%, respectively. The three coexisting plants relied on the unstable shallow soil water (recharged by rainfall) while the water use proportion of the deep soil layer was consistently low. This implies that the three plants were less resistant to drought stress, thus posing a threat to the stability and sustainability of the agroforestry system. Moreover, even in July and September with the high SWC in agroforestry, the partitioning of soil water among the three coexisting plants did not increase with increased ET loss. The three coexisting plants showed strong competition for soil water use, as indicated by the high values (0.69–0.97) of PS. Overall, the hydrological niche overlap of the coexisting plants in the agroforestry system resulted in low ecosystem stability. Density reduction or selection of suitable species is required to achieve sustainable vegetation restoration.

Dependence of soft wheat grain yield on unstable soil moisture

The purpose of the study is to establish the influence of precursors, fertilizers and reserves of productive moisture during the growing season on the yield of spring soft wheat in the arid conditions of the Southern Urals. Field experiments are conducted for the first time from 2002 to 2021 on nine sowing options (for hard, corn, millet, sorghum, peas) of soft wheat in crop rotations and permanent sowing on the chernozems of the southern Orenburg region. The research is conducted using the field, thermostatic-weight method and multiple regression analysis is used. In the fifth (millet) and seventh (pea) variants, the maximum amount of spring moisture is 44.4; 43.1 mm and 136.4; 142.7 mm in soil layers 0-30; 0-100 cm. The same highest yield is observed for millet and pea precursors on the background of 0.89 t with nitroammophos and 0.82 t/ha without fertilizers. The best grain gain from mineral fertilizers was obtained by 0.12 tons for durum wheat (the eighth option) in a double-field crop rotation. In the third variant (for durum wheat), the maximum effect of moisture on grain yield in the soil layer of 0-30, 0-100 cm is determined and ranges from 22.60 to 39.83% with a significance criterion of 0.002-0.03 units. Basically, the formation of soft wheat grains of 0.81 and 0.73 t / ha occurs due to moisture consumption of 28.8; 87.4 mm. The best influence of precursors, mineral fertilizers and productive moisture reserves on the yield of soft wheat grain after cultivation of durum wheat, millet and peas in crop rotations has been revealed.

THE EFFECT OF BLOOD CLAM SHELL POWDER ADDITION ON SHEAR STRENGTH VALUE OF CLAY SOIL

Ground condition is an important aspect that influences performance under the load. An effort to overcome the load problem can be done by improving unstable soil through soil stabilization using blood clam shell powder. In order to determine the shear strength and changes in its value, it can be done by conducting the Triaxial UU test on a mixture of clay and blood clam shell powder with addition of 10%, 20%, 25%, and 30% of soil weight and 4% coal ash. Mixed soil was then stored in plastic for 24 hours to achieve evenly distributed moisture content. Laboratory testing was carried out with reference to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards, aimed to calculate soil shear angle, cohesion, and soil shear strength values. The results showed that the addition of blood clam shell powder and coal ash increased the soil shear strength compared to the clay soil (without any addition). The highest shear strength value of 35,724 kPa was obtained by adding 25% blood clam shells.

Liquefaction-induced flow-like landslides: the case of Valarties (Spain)

This paper examines a flowslide involving a glacial deposit of low-plasticity silty sand triggered by a karstic spring after a rainfall period. The work aims at explaining the triggering, propagation and kinematics of flow-like landslides in a unique framework. In particular, a material point method open-source code, able to solve coupled hydro-mechanical problems for saturated/unsaturated soils, was developed. Laboratory and field experiments revealed a liquefaction potential of the mobilised material. To simulate such potential, a recent liquefaction model (Ta-Ger), validated so far at a laboratory scale, was selected, extended to unsaturated conditions, implemented and calibrated. The analysis indicates a complex behaviour of the moving mass and explains the mechanisms developing sequentially in the flowslide. The impact of the upper unstable soil mass against the soil at lower elevations is a key phenomenon to generalise soil liquefaction in the entire slope. Patterns of soil velocity and displacements are far from being a uniform flow of liquefied material. The model developed is a powerful tool to interpret flowslides involving a saturated and unsaturated soil profile. The paper includes sensitivity analyses and discusses the discrepancies observed in the run-up of the flowslide climbing on the opposite slope of the valley.

Behavior of circular skirted footing on gypseous soil subjected to water infiltration

Abstract Skirted footings are used to increase the final carrying capacity of shallow foundations resting on unstable soil and to decrease settling by limiting the soil beneath them. Skirted footings are utilized as an alternative to pile driving in poor strength soils at the top layer, such as gypseous soil, to save project costs and time spent installing piles while maintaining excellent performance. The settling of circular skirted footings resting on gypseous soil subjected to loading, infiltration, and collapsing stages was investigated using numerical calculations in this research study to determine their stability under environmental loadings. Finite element analyses were carried out using the commercially available software GEO-STUDIO. The stage of gypseous soil and variable skirt depth to footing diameter ratios (d/D) were taken into consideration. The findings reveal that both the soil stage and the skirt embedment ratio have a substantial impact on the ultimate bearing capacity and the settlement of weak soil, with the skirt embedment ratio increasing resulting in superior skirted footing performance. Furthermore, the improvement in settlement for the loading stage is the smallest, whereas the value for the collapsing soil stage is the largest.

Pengaruh Penambahan Serbuk Kaca pada Stabilisasi Tanah Lempung Lunak di Daerah Kabupaten Karawang

Problems that are often encountered in road construction are poor and unstable soil conditions. Soil conditions greatly affect the design process and the durability of the road. One thing that is usually done to improve soil properties is to add mixed materials to improve the soil properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding Waste Glass Powder (WGP) on soil consistency and CBR value. The percentage of WGP used is 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 25%. The result is that the addition of WGP has significantly improved soil quality. The value of the plasticity index of the soil decreases, which means that the potential for swelling and shrinkage of the soil is also decreased. The CBR value of the soil also increased to 341.04%.

Determination of the bearing capacity of a building and structures of energy facilities

The article presents the ability of the technical condition of buildings and structures of energy facilities in areas with unstable soil and a high level of groundwater. A method for determining the energy of a falling hammer when a pile is immersed in the ground, the height and speed of the fall of the impact part of the hammer, as well as the energy constant A (J/kg) and α (J/s), on which all energy calculations are based, are considered. Calculations for testing driven piles are given. static load. The energy hidden in the soil increases with increasing layer thickness, and this makes it possible to determine the stress in the soil at various depths from the surface.

The importance of unsaturated soil properties in the development of slope susceptibility map for Old Alluvium in Singapore

Slope failures caused by rainfall are a regular occurrence in residual soils. As a result of climate change, increased precipitation is anticipated; preventing slope failures due to rain is therefore essential. One typical technique for pinpointing regions at risk for slope failures is the use of a “slope susceptibility map.” Because the groundwater table is usually deep, many slopes in residual soil are typically unsaturated. Soil-water characteristic curve, permeability function, and unsaturated shear strength are the essential unsaturated soil parameters that should be factored into the creation of a slope susceptibility map. This research involved the Old Alluvium region in Singapore as a case study. Transient rainfall infiltration and grid-based regional slope stability (TRIGRS) model was used to establish pore-water pressure distributions over this region. Scoops3D was utilized to include the pore-water pressures calculated by TRIGRS for evaluating slope stability in three dimensions. To assess the reliability of the developed slope susceptibility map, two-dimensional (2-D) numerical analyses were performed on a subset of historically unstable residual soil slopes at the Bidadari site. Minimum safety factors determined via numerical analyses of the slopes under study agreed well with those determined via the slope susceptibility map.

Design and technological methods for buildings and structures in bases and foundations

Buildings and structures are erected on the foundation of ground or arranged in the soil column, and the subsoil can also be used as a building material. Its stability, durability, reliability and appropriate operation are determined not only by the structural qualities of the structure, but also by the properties of the foundation soil itself and the conditions of interaction between the structure and the foundation. Insufficiently studied engineering and geological conditions at the construction site, poorly designed bases and foundations, failure to considerably increase the weight of the building during its reconstruction or technical re-equipment, when erecting new buildings near the existing buildings, often cause their unacceptable deformations which can cause damage and sometimes even complete destruction of the erected buildings. The improvement of design and technological solutions in the field of foundations and foundations will result in saving both labor and material resources, and will reduce the construction period. This paper studies the properties of unstable soils, various difficulties in the design and construction of buildings and structures in special soil conditions with unstable structural relationships, the analysis of a variety of methods to strengthen the foundation soils and ways to combat deformations of buildings and structures.
