Training learners to use Quizlet vocabulary activities on mobile phones in Vietnam with Facebook

Mobile phone ownership among university students in Vietnam has reached almost 100%, exceeding that of Internet-capable desktop computers. This has made them increasingly popular to allow learners to carry out learning activities outside of the classroom, but some studies have suggested that learners are not always willing to engage in activities outside of the classroom (Kim et al., 2013). Recent research has suggested that providing training to learners that includes not only how but also why activities are important can improve learner engagement in mobile-based activities (Stockwell & Hubbard, 2014). In this paper, Vietnamese learners of English engaged in vocabulary and grammar tasks using the Quizlet app on their mobile phones outside of class time. Learners were provided with technical training in class, while ongoing strategic and pedagogical training were provided through a combination of in-class activities and interactions through a dedicated Facebook page over a 5-week period. Usage patterns of the site were recorded through a learning journal and interactions on the Facebook page were analysed to determine the nature of the discussions that took place. Learner attitudes towards the tasks and the training were examined through pre- and post-questionnaires and a focus group discussion. The results are discussed in terms of the problems encountered, and some suggestions for providing appropriate training to learning through mobile phones outside of class through social networking.

FOSTERING VIETNAMESE EFL LEARNERS’ LEARNER AUTONOMY AND READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY THROUGH ONLINE PLATFORMS

The ability of learner autonomy is a prerequisite for many university students in Vietnam. However, it is a daunting task for EFL teachers and learners to achieve that learning outcome. The present study aims to delineate second-year English majors’ perceived learner autonomy and reading comprehension ability in an online reading course at Van Lang University, Vietnam, with two online platforms (synchronous via Microsoft Teams and asynchronous via Moodle). During the ten weeks of this course, different online reading and vocabulary practices were assigned to 65 students in two intact classes. The results were obtained from reading tests, questionnaires, and a follow-up interview. The findings revealed that they could perceive their learner autonomy more positively and statistically remarkably improve their reading comprehension ability after the course. The students’ insights into the course’s effectiveness confirmed several benefits in addition to a few barriers (i.e., technical issues, English proficiency levels, learning motivation, and online self-study skills). The results have specific implications for the practice of English reading instruction at the faculty. Heartfelt ventures: The power of empathy in driving social entrepreneurial

Although the notion of social entrepreneurship is not new to us today, it has not yet gained widespread acceptance and development in Vietnam. Although there are numerous study publications on the relationship between empathy and social entrepreneurial intentions, this problem has yet to be studied much in the context of Vietnam's, particularly among youth. The goal of this study is to see if young empathy is linked to their desire to start a social enterprise. Reliability analysis using PLS-SEM software and a binary regression model will be used to examine data obtained from 339 university students in Vietnam. According to the findings, as well as the theory of planned behavior and the theory of action phases, (1) empathy does not directly affect social business intention, but rather indirectly through two mechanisms, social worth and social entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and (2) individuals who are confident in their own abilities have more social entrepreneurship intentions. We provide recommendations based on these findings to inspire young people to pursue social entrepreneurship, contribute to the development of a sustainable economy, and contribute positive values to society.

Happiness among university students and associated factors: A cross-sectional study in Vietnam.

Happiness is among the fundamental concepts in mental health that have an impact on different aspects of university students. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of happiness among university students in Vietnam and to identify the factors influencing happiness. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on undergraduate students in 8 universities and colleges in Hanoi, Vietnam. Happiness was measured using the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS), and we used imputed Poisson regression to evaluate associations between happiness and associated factors. Among 9120 participants students (95.1% response rate), the prevalence of "happier group" was 80.9% (95% CI: 80.1-81.7). In the multivariable regression models, factors associated with being "less happy" on SHS were the perceived financial burden, year in university, academic motivation profile, and self-reported depression and anxiety. University healthcare providers should pay attention to these associated factors while designing mental health care programs to promote happiness among university students.

Research on Factors Affecting Innovative Start-Up Intention of University Students in Vietnam

The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship of personality traits, human capital, and the surrounding environment on the innovative start-up intention of university students, through the mediators of perceived desirability and risk-taking propensity. Using the SPSS 26 and AMOS 26 research tools, analysis techniques and hypotheses of the linear structural model were tested. The research data was collected through interviews with 1,046 university students in Vietnam. The research results show that factors related to personality traits, human capital, surrounding environment, perceived desirability, and risk-taking propensity have a positive direct and indirect impact on the innovative start-up intention of university students. This is a new finding in the context of Vietnam's socio-economic landscape. The research also reveals differences in the impact of these factors on the innovative start-up intention of students, between male and female groups, family backgrounds, and field of study. For the group with prior exposure to innovative entrepreneurship, social norms have a significant impact on entrepreneurial intention. The research results provide a basis for local authorities and universities to develop policy implications and management approaches to better support and enhance the innovative start-up intention of students, in order to contribute to the country's socio-economic development.

The effect of audit training in universities on the audit expectation gap

The audit expectation gap (AEG) is a phenomenon where there is a difference between what people expect of auditors and what they can do. This research was conducted in 2023 with 336 university students in Vietnam to assess the effect of university training on the AEG related to auditors' responsibilities. The reliability of the scale and the average difference between student groups were tested using SPSS 29 software. The results showed that AEG exists among accounting students who have studied auditing subjects. Most of these students have higher expectations than other students. This study also revealed that the university's auditing program and auditing courses effectively narrowed the AEG to two in nine auditor's responsibilities and one in nine auditor's responsibilities, respectively. However, it is important to note that these changes were only cognitive. Students still expect auditors to fulfill crucial responsibilities such as detecting fraud, predicting bankruptcy, evaluating ongoing operations and serving as the "family doctor" of the enterprise. Therefore, training for students can help narrow the AEG about certain audit responsibilities. A better approach is to strengthen the responsibility and authority of auditors. The future of the audit profession depends on the demands of stakeholders and the capabilities of the profession. The auditing profession must accept new demands for auditor responsibilities in the new context. This also has implications for audit bodies in narrowing the audit expectation gap in Vietnam.

English as a foreign language students’ acceptance of Google Classroom in writing classes: A case study in Vietnam

Google Classroom is a virtual education platform created by Google that allows both instructors and learners to actively participate in educational environments inside and outside of the classroom in an innovative way. This research aims to determine how university students perceived the adoption of Google Classroom in writing classes. This research was a convergent parallel mix-methods approach in which data were gathered through a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The participants of this study included 130 university students in Vietnam. The results revealed that students expressed their approval of using Google Classroom in writing classes and that they had a positive view since it benefited them greatly in their learning writing process. This study suggests practical implications for language educators to use Google Classroom in writing classes.

AN INVESTIGATION ON DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED BY ENGLISH-MAJORED STUDENTS AT DONG NAI TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY IN WRITING ACADEMIC ESSAYS

University students in Vietnam are facing a growing demand to use English in their academic and future career endeavors. Among four skills, English writing is a significant challenge for students, particularly those pursuing a major in academic English language, as they are expected to demonstrate the proficiency in a diverse range of writing styles. Consequently, writing difficulties among students have consistently emerged as a primary concern in writing courses. Nevertheless, Dong Nai Technology University has not yet done any research study to examine this particular element. The objective of this study was to examine the challenges encountered by students when attempting to meet the criteria of an academic English essay. Subsequently, some solutions were applied to enhance the quality of students' essays. The author of this study employs a questionnaire and an interview to investigate the English-majored students’ essay writing practice and challenges at Dong Nai Technology University. The survey was sent to a total of 140 students, and the findings revealed that students had not only a low frequency of writing practice but also encountered many barriers to meet writing criteria including task achievement, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, coherence and cohesion . In addition, the interview’ results provided a more comprehensive picture of students’ challenges in writing academic essays. The study also indicates the importance of teachers’ feedback and students’ reading and writing practice in enhancing students’ writing proficiency.

The Role of Disturbed Sleep due to Short-Form Video (SFV) Usage on Academic Engagement and Academic Achievement

This study aims to investigate the relationship between disturbed sleep caused by Short-Form Video (SFV) usage and academic achievement, mediated by academic engagement. A sample of 505 university students in Vietnam completed an online survey protocol that measured disturbed sleep due to SFV usage, academic engagement, and academic achievement. The findings reveal a significant association between disturbed sleep due to SFV usage and both academic engagement and academic achievement. Surprisingly, no relationship was found between academic engagement and academic achievement in the present study. This study provides valuable recommendations for educators and psychologists to mitigate the potential risks of SFV usage on mental health among university students and enhance personal development through academic achievement. This study not only addresses the research gap in understanding the impact of disturbed sleep due to SFV usage on academic engagement but also highlights the significance of sleep disorders in influencing students' academic productivity.

Menstruation-Related Symptoms and Associated Factors among Female University Students in Vietnam

Menstruation and menstrual-related symptoms, stress, and lifestyle factors can significantly affect the health and academic lives of university students. This study aimed to explore menstruation-related symptoms and associated factors among female university students in Vietnam. This study used a cross-sectional design. Data from 349 students were analyzed for menstrual and menstrual-related symptoms using the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ). We found that 92.0% and 98.9% of the students had menstrual-related symptoms in the pre- and intra-menstrual phases, respectively. The most common symptoms in each phase were backache (71.1%) in the pre-menstrual phase and fatigue (90.3%) in the intra-menstrual phase. Menstruation-related symptoms were associated with stress. These results contribute significantly to our understanding of menstrual health among Vietnamese university students. These findings imply the need to strengthen support systems for university students, especially by providing proper information about menstruation and managing stress.

The influence of service quality on student satisfaction and student loyalty in Vietnam: the moderating role of the university image

PurposeImproving service quality, student satisfaction and student loyalty is important to higher education institutions’ sustainable growth. The objectives of this study are a twofold: first, the study seeks to determine the dimensions of higher education service quality with a specific focus on Vietnam. Second, it examines how the service quality dimensions impact student satisfaction and student loyalty, with the moderating role of the university image.Design/methodology/approachThis study followed a rigorous procedure, including interviews, a survey, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and reliability analysis to identify higher education service quality dimensions and their measures. After that, using the data obtained from 1,550 university students in Vietnam, confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate the identified dimensions and structural equation modeling was used to test a proposed model explaining the outcomes of higher education service quality.FindingsThe findings reveal five dimensions of higher education service quality: academic aspect, nonacademic aspect, programming issues, facilities and industry interaction. Most of these factors have a positive influence on student satisfaction. In addition, the university image moderates the positive relationship between student satisfaction and student loyalty.Practical implicationsThis study’s findings highlight the complexity of service quality in the higher education context and encourage higher education institutions to improve their service quality in image to enhance student satisfaction and loyalty.Originality/valueThis study suggests a unique measure of higher education service quality dimensions and provides fresh insights into how they impact student satisfaction and loyalty in Vietnam.

The Role of Employability Skills and University Support towards Employability: A Mediation of Self-efficacy

The study aims to delve into the factors influencing self-perceived employability among university students in Vietnam, while also scrutinizing potential gender disparities in these determinants. Employing a cross-sectional design, the research employs structural equation modeling to analyze data gathered from 306 students across various academic disciplines. The study evaluates constructs including perception of employability skills, perception of university support, self-efficacy, and selfperception of employability. Furthermore, a multigroup analysis is conducted to discern any variations in the relationships between these constructs across genders. Results from the structural equation modeling unveil noteworthy gender differences in these relationships. Specifically, while the perception of employability skills significantly impacts the self-perception of employability among males, self-efficacy emerges as a more influential predictor among females. Additionally, the multigroup analysis suggests that the influence of perception of university support on self-perception of employability remains consistent across genders. Nonetheless, a slight gender discrepancy is observed in the relationship between perception of employability skills and self-efficacy, prompting further exploration. These findings illuminate the intricate interplay of employability-related factors and gender in shaping students' perceptions of their employability. The study advocates for tailored interventions that account for these gender-specific influences to enhance employability outcomes among university students.

Exploring the Emotional Pathway from Motivation to Facebook* Addiction in a Vietnamese Undergraduate Sample.

Facebook* is one of the largest social media platforms in the world. The use of Facebook* can lead to several problems, such as Facebook* addiction. Previous studies have investigated the effects of reinforcing factors on problematic Facebook* use, but negative factors have been little studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between motivation and Facebook* addiction, and examine the influence of positive and negative emotions, which serve as reinforcement and punishment when using Facebook*. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 294 university students in Vietnam, with a mean age of 19.93 and a standard deviation of 1.27. The Bergen Facebook* Addiction Scale, the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience, and the Motives for Facebook* Use Scale were used to collect the data. SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20 software were used for data analysis. The results indicated that the students' motivations to maintain relationships and pass time were positively associated with Facebook* usage, while motivations for virtual community, entertainment, "coolness," and companionship did not significantly influence Facebook* usage. This use of Facebook* was found to elicit both positive and negative emotions. Both these emotions were associated with an increase in Facebook* addiction among the students. These results support the view that Facebook* addiction is positively associated with satisfaction with Facebook* use, and that both positive and negative emotions are associated with an increase in Facebook* addiction. Several limitations of the study are clarified.

Investigating the Effect of Future Orientation on Saving Intention of Generation Z’s University Students in Vietnam’s Northern Region

Young people are often thought to have a lifestyle focusing on enjoyment, which is why issues related to saving among the youth, especially saving money, receive significant attention from society. This issue has been analyzed in some previous studies; however, there is a new factor that has not been explored in the context of Vietnam, which is future orientation. The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between future orientation, attitude towards saving and saving intention of generation Z university students in Northern Vietnam. The research method used was the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The primary data was collected from 531 respondents who are currently studying at universities in Northern Vietnam and the data was analyzed by using SPSS and AMOS software. The structural equation modeling (SEM) method was used, and the results indicate that both future orientation and attitude towards saving have a positive impact on savings intention. Furthermore, the mediating role of attitude in the relationship between future orientation and saving intention was confirmed. Therefore, the results should be applied by governmental agencies, financial organizations and individuals, especially young people, to encourage saving intention, and furthermore, saving behavior.

Students' Perceptions and Attitudes Towards the Importance of Soft Skills Development in Learning and Career Development

This study aims to understand students' perceptions and attitudes in Vietnam about the importance of developing soft skills in their academic and professional life. Through in-depth interviews with 15 students from 9 universities in Hanoi. The research results show that university students in Vietnam generally understand and appreciate the importance of soft skills for personal development, career advancement and meeting society's expectations. Students recognize the competitive advantage that soft skills bring to the job market and express motivation to develop these skills, including career aspirations and personal development goals. However, the study also identifies various barriers and challenges that prevent them from acquiring and applying soft skills. Based on the results of the study, a number of recommendations are made to support the holistic development of students, equipping them with the necessary soft skills for academic and career success.

Impact of institutional environment on social entrepreneurial intentions

Scholars have recognized the need for further research to explore the role of institutional factors in social entrepreneurship (SE) within emerging markets (Urban and Kujinga, 2017). In response, this study investigates how the institutional environment influences the antecedents of social entrepreneurial intention (SEI) in Vietnam by expanding the SEI model of Mair and Noboa (2006). Drawing data from 401 university students in Vietnam, this study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the research hypotheses and model. The results reveal that social entrepreneurial self-efficacy (SES) and perceived social support (PSS) significantly and positively influence the intention to become a social entrepreneur, while empathy (EMP) and moral obligation (MO) show no effect. Furthermore, the institutional environment, comprising the regulatory dimension (RD), normative dimension (ND), and cognitive dimension (CD), plays a crucial role in boosting EMP, MO, SES, and PSS. This study contributes to SE literature by extending established intention models with the inclusion of institutional dimensions. Additionally, the findings of this study imply that policymakers should design SE-supportive policies and regulations, and create a culture that values and promotes SE in order to encourage social innovation and reduce barriers to entry for social ventures. Educators should also increase opportunities for students to experience SE and develop entrepreneurial skills in order to enhance their perception of cognitive and normative environments, making SE a more attractive career option.

Social Entrepreneurial Intention among Youth in Vietnam: The Roles of Prior Experience and Perceived Educational Support

This study addresses factors that influence the social entrepreneurial intentions (SEI) of university students in Vietnam. Specifically, it extends previous research by investigating the effect of perceived educational support on SEI through its indirect effect on empathy, moral obligation, perceived social support and social self-efficacy. Based on a questionnaire completed by 994 university students in three Vietnamese cities, we used a structural equation model to test our hypotheses. Our findings show that the variables with the most significant effect in shaping SEI among Vietnamese youth are prior experience and perceived educational support. No statistically significant effect was found for empathy. Moreover, the study also shows that moral obligation, perceived social support and social self-efficacy play mediating roles in the relationship between prior experience, perceived educational support and SEI. This study contributes to the body of knowledge in this area by demonstrating the importance of prior experience and educational support in promoting social entrepreneurship among young people in Vietnam.

Willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine in relation to psychological wellbeing among a sample of university students in Vietnam

Background and aimsNowadays, there are contradicting opinions about the benefits and risks of COVID-19 vaccine, which lead to the hesitance among recipients to receive the vaccine. This study aims to evaluate the university student’s attitude toward COVID-19 vaccine, preventative measure, and status of their psychological wellbeing.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study among Vietnamese students aged ≥ 18 years to evaluate their willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine, psychological wellbeing status, and preventive measure compliance. The participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire via Google Form. Descriptive and analytical statistics were performed with p < 0.05 being considered as statistically significant.ResultsA total of 2998 randomly selected participants in Vietnam completed the questionnaire with participants’ mean age of 20.26 pm 1.84. The mean score for the willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccination was 46.13 pm 19.03 (the highest point was 54). Regarding preventative measures, the mean score of compliance was 7.15 pm 1.98 over a 10 points scale and “being vaccinated or not” did not affect their compliance. 56.94% participants were having normal psychological wellbeing at the time of survey and rest 43.06% reported to have experienced stress, varying from slight to severe level. There might be a trend that those studying medicine or those with higher educational level had higher rate of stress than others.ConclusionThe study showed a positive result of Vietnamese students’ willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine and compliance towards preventive measures. Besides, we also reported that almost half participants had experienced stress during the pandemic. Developing proper interventions to deal with factors contributing to psychological wellbeing and related problems are essential to deal with and overcome the pandemic or post-pandemic struggles.

“If you sow goodness, you will reap goodness”: activating social entrepreneurial intentions with karmic beliefs

PurposeAlthough karmic beliefs have been found to be positively correlated with pro-social behaviors, the role of karmic beliefs in social entrepreneurship remains relatively unknown. Drawing on the morally extended theory of planned behavior, this paper aims to explore the karmic aspect of social venturing, wherein individuals’ social entrepreneurial intentions and their moral antecedents are activated by karmic beliefs.Design/methodology/approachThe study was performed on a sample of 401 university students in Vietnam. Cronbach’s alpha, confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression analyses were then used to test the reliability, validity of scales and developed hypotheses.FindingsThe findings illustrate that karmic beliefs are strongly and positively correlated with empathy, moral obligation, social entrepreneurial self-efficacy and perceived social support. Moreover, individuals’ social entrepreneurial intentions are not only significantly and directly stimulated by karmic beliefs but also receive the indirect effects of karmic beliefs through three mediators: empathy, moral obligation and social entrepreneurial self-efficacy.Originality/valueThe study added fresh perspectives on the role of karmic beliefs in social entrepreneurship literature. Additionally, this study shed a new light on entrepreneurial literature by morally extending theory of planned behavior to explore underlying mechanisms of moral and empathetic components on transferring the effects of karmic beliefs on social entrepreneurial intentions.
