Generating dipole trap arrays based on dielectric metasurface at 808 nm

We propose to use dielectric metasurface as a novel platform to generate dipole trap arrays with high quality and efficiency. According to the specific design parameters of the dipole trap array, the modulation phase and the focusing phase are calculated respectively. Building upon this, we design a metasurface device consisting of cylindrical TiO2-based integrated-resonant unit-cells by combining the modulating phase with the focusing phase. In addition, by finely adjusting the position of the nanopillar, a good match between the theoretical phase and the transmission phase of the nanopillar can be achieved to reduce the aberration introduced by the metasurface device. We conducted simulation experiments to demonstrate several configurations of dipole trap arrays. The results indicate that the obtained dipole trap arrays are precisely positioned and have uniform intensity distribution. The spacing and quantity of the traps obtained through this method can be controlled, providing a versatile and scalable system for neutral single-atom quantum information processing and quantum simulation.

Terahertz metalens for generating multi-polarized focal points and images with uniform intensity distributions.

Metasurfaces have provided a flexible platform for designing ultracompact metalenses with unusual functionalities. However, traditional multi-foci metalenses are limited to generating circularly polarized (CP) or linearly polarized (LP) focal points, and the intensity distributions are always inhomogeneous/chaotical between the multiple focal points. Here, an inverse design approach is proposed to optimize the in-plane orientation of each meta-atom in a terahertz (THz) multi-foci metalens that can generate multi-polarized focal points with nearly uniform intensity distributions. As a proof-of-principle example, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate an inversely designed metalens for simultaneously generating multiple CP- and LP-based focal points with homogeneous intensity distributions, leading to a multi-polarized image (rather than the holography). Furthermore, the multi-channel and multi-polarized images consisting of multiple focal points with homogeneous intensity distributions are also numerically demonstrated. The unique approach for inversely designing multi-foci metalens that can generate multi-polarized focal points and images with uniform intensity distributions will enable potential applications in imaging and sensing.

A 2 µm Gallium Antimonide Semiconductor Laser Based on Slanted, Wedge-Shaped Microlens Fiber Coupling

Semiconductor lasers with a wavelength of 2 µm, composed of antimonide materials, find important applications in trace gas detection, laser medicine, and free-space optical communication, among others. In this paper, a more suitable microlens shape for 2 µm gallium antimonide semiconductor lasers is designed. Based on the fiber coupling efficiency model, the parameters of the designed slanting wedge-shaped microlens fiber are optimized to improve laser beam quality. The large tangent angle on both sides of the slanted, wedge-shaped microlens fiber is calculated using Snell’s law, and the fiber core diameter and small wedge angle are determined through space fiber coupling experiments. After packaging the fiber coupling module with the chip, the laser output beam exhibits good overall symmetry in the spot with a uniform intensity distribution. The maximum output power is approximately 210 mW, demonstrating good power stability.

Modulated high-order Hermite-Gaussian beams with uniform intensity distribution

Hermite-Gaussian beams have been studied since the early years of laser modes. With the recent development of structured light, different modulation methods have been demonstrated to control the energy, polarization and propagation behavior of Hermite-Gaussian beams. In this work we introduce an inverse design approach to modulate the energy distribution among different lobes of Hermite-Gaussian beams. In this approach, the desired intensity profiles of Hermite-Gaussian beams are the starting point. The required spatial phase masks are calculated through inverse Fourier transform, then projected on a spatial light modulator to convert conventional Gaussian beams into modulated Hermite-Gaussian beams. The experimental modulated high-order (m = 10, n = 10) Hermite-Gaussian beams show much improved energy distribution among different lobes over standard Hermite-Gaussian beams. These modulated Hermite-Gaussian beams also have improved beam quality factor M2 after modulation. These results demonstrated the feasibility to fine-tune the intensity profiles of Hermite-Gaussian beams, which have applications in structured illumination, particle manipulation and optical communications.

Design and implementation of a dual aspheric integrated shaping element for a high-power fiber laser

A dual aspheric integrated beam shaper suitable for a high-power laser situation has been designed and realized. The model for this lens was derived theoretically and the performance was evaluated using a detailed simulation. The ultrasonic vibration assisted cutting and the high-precision grinding and polishing technology were used for the processing. The surface accuracy was less than 200 nm measured with a profiler, and the roughness was smaller than 20 nm with the help of the white light interferometer. Shaping experiments were carried out, which verified that the Gaussian beam has uniform intensity distribution with a uniformity of 85.13% in the near field and converges to a point in the far field, which is exactly as expected. It thus provides an actual selection for high-power laser shaping.

Numerical simulation for electric field intensity and jet space of the quadratic spiral spinneret with auxiliary electrode

To produce a high quality electrostatic spinneret with low voltage requirements, low energy consumption, and narrow fiber diameter distribution, the mechanical model of the spinning unit of the fractal spiral spinneret was established by using the quadratic fractal spiral parametric equation. The established fractal spiral electrostatic spinning model was imported into COMSOL Multiphysics finite element analysis software, mesh division was performed on the model, multiple spinning units were combined to form the array spinneret, and the optimal parameters of the fractal structure were optimized. However, there are still two sides of the field intensity other than the middle field intensity of the high situation. In order to equalize the field intensity, we used the spinneret properties of the same disc auxiliary electrode and quadratic fractal spiral spinneret in a linear arrangement, and the auxiliary electrode and spinneret distance and spinneret radius of the two important parameters to optimize the simulation, resulting in obtaining a more uniform field intensity distribution of the quadratic fractal spiral spinneret electrospinning equipment. Based on the calculation of the fractional dimension of the Von Koch curve, the fractional dimension of the quadratic fractal spinneret was 1.77. The critical field intensity of the system was calculated to be 2.13 × 106 V/m, and the jet space was 1.22–3.13 mm. The optimized quadratic fractal spinneret model with auxiliary electrode faced the receiving plate in the range of 60° from the left to the right of the spinning sites, –5 to 5 sites, which may emit the spinning jet.

Broadband optical vortex beam generation using flat-surface nanostructured gradient index vortex phase masks

We developed a new kind of compact flat-surface nanostructured gradient index vortex phase mask, for the effective generation of optical vortex beams in broadband infrared wavelength range. A low-cost nanotechnological material method was employed for this work. The binary structure component consists of 17,557 nano-sized rods made of two lead–bismuth–gallium silicate glasses which were developed in-house. Those small rods are spatially arranged in such a way that, according to effective medium theory, the refractive index of this internal structure is constant in the radial direction and linearly changes following azimuthal angle. Numerical results demonstrated that a nanostructured vortex phase mask with a thickness of 19 μm can convert Gaussian beams into fundamental optical vortices over 290 nm wavelength bandwidth from 1275 to 1565 nm. This has been confirmed in experiments using three diode laser sources operating at 1310, 1550, and 1565 nm. The generation of vortex beams is verified through their uniform doughnut-like intensity distributions, clear astigmatic transformation patterns, and spiral as well as fork-like interferograms. This new flat-surface component can be directly mounted to an optical fiber tip for simplifying vortex generator systems as well as easier manipulation of the generated OVB in three-dimensional space.

Manipulation of plasmonic vortex fields using positive elliptically polarized beams

Several studies have investigated methods for the direct excitation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) vortex fields by using scalar beams with linear and circular polarization. In this paper, we propose novel devices for generating SPP vortex fields by using positive elliptically polarized beams. These devices excited SPP vortices with a uniform electric field intensity distribution, that did not vary arbitrarily with changes in the incident beam amplitude ratio. Moreover, when the incident scalar beam was transformed into a vector beam with different amplitude ratios at every point in space, the topological charge of the SPP vortex field could be dynamically modulated by changing the polarization order and rotation direction of the incident vector beam. The fields generated by different structures after the superposition of SPP vortices had spatial intensity distributions that varied with changes in the incident beam amplitude ratio. These properties provide a new idea for realizing different spatial intensity distributions for a dynamic modulation SPP field.

Generation of flattop beams from a distorted optical field by the wavefront shaping technique.

Uniform laser beams with controllable patterns are crucial for various applications, including laser processing and inertial confinement fusion. While some methods have been proposed to generate flattop beams, they often require complex optical systems that can become ineffective because of the misalignment of the system or the imperfection of optical elements. To overcome these issues, we utilized feedback-based wavefront shaping (FWS) technology to generate flattop beams with desired patterns from a disordered light. To solve the multi-goal optimization problem, we propose some modifications based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA2) and successfully generate focal beams with a uniform intensity distribution and controllable beam shape from the disordered light field.

Mitigating Under-Sampling Artifacts in 3D Photoacoustic Imaging Using Res-UNet Based on Digital Breast Phantom.

In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) imaging has rapidly grown as a non-invasive screening technique for breast cancer detection using three-dimensional (3D) hemispherical arrays due to their large field of view. However, the development of breast imaging systems is hindered by a lack of patients and ground truth samples, as well as under-sampling problems caused by high costs. Most research related to solving these problems in the PA field were based on 2D transducer arrays or simple regular shape phantoms for 3D transducer arrays or images from other modalities. Therefore, we demonstrate an effective method for removing under-sampling artifacts based on deep neural network (DNN) to reconstruct high-quality PA images using numerical digital breast simulations. We constructed 3D digital breast phantoms based on human anatomical structures and physical properties, which were then subjected to 3D Monte-Carlo and K-wave acoustic simulations to mimic acoustic propagation for hemispherical transducer arrays. Finally, we applied a 3D delay-and-sum reconstruction algorithm and a Res-UNet network to achieve higher resolution on sparsely-sampled data. Our results indicate that when using a 757 nm laser with uniform intensity distribution illuminated on a numerical digital breast, the imaging depth can reach 3 cm with 0.25 mm spatial resolution. In addition, the proposed DNN can significantly enhance image quality by up to 78.4%, as measured by MS-SSIM, and reduce background artifacts by up to 19.0%, as measured by PSNR, even at an under-sampling ratio of 10%. The post-processing time for these improvements is only 0.6 s. This paper suggests a new 3D real time DNN method addressing the sparse sampling problem based on numerical digital breast simulations, this approach can also be applied to clinical data and accelerate the development of 3D photoacoustic hemispherical transducer arrays for early breast cancer diagnosis.

Flattened Gaussian focal spot with uniform phase produced by photon sieve

The equivalent pupil and the point spread function constitute the Fourier–Bessel transform relation. Based on this, we established the equivalent pupil function theory of rotating symmetric photon sieve and derived the Fourier transform of the flattened Gaussian function. The focal spot produced by this type of photon sieve exhibits a uniform intensity and phase distribution. According to the numerical results, the flattened Gaussian field distribution is consistent with the designed function. In addition, the nonuniformity in intensity and phase is approximately 1% and less than 1/170 wavelength, respectively.

Wide-spectrum laser beam shaping for full-color volume holographic optical element recording.

For homogeneous diffraction efficiency of the recorded volume holographic optical element (vHOE), a recording beam of uniform intensity is required. A multicolor vHOE is recorded by an RGB laser source with Gaussian intensity distribution; during equal exposure time, recording beams of different intensities would result in different diffraction efficiencies in different recording areas. In this paper, we present a wide-spectrum laser beam shaping system design method, by which the incident RGB laser beam can be controlled into uniform intensity distribution with a spherical wavefront. This beam shaping system can be added to any recording system to obtain uniform intensity distribution without altering the beam shaping effect of the original recording system. The proposed beam shaping system is composed of two aspherical lens groups, and the design method with an initial point design and optimization design method is given. An example is built to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed beam shaping system.

Monochromatic LED-based spectrally tunable light source for chromatic confocal sensors

Prior art emission spectra of light sources utilized in chromatic confocal sensors share two disadvantages: the uneven spectral power distribution (SPD) and the fixed distribution characteristic. Consequently, the detected peak signal intensity is regulated by the SPD properties of the light source and the spectrum transmittance characteristics of the dispersive lens. To achieve this, 18 types of monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different peak wavelengths were selected to create a wide-spectrum light source with a tunable SPD. The SPD characteristics of the light source can be modified by adjusting the luminous intensity of each LED. The tungsten halogen lamp, the “white” LED, and the designed light source were selected as the light sources for the chromatic confocal measurement system, respectively. Comparing the peak signals obtained under various light sources. The experimental results show that, in the range of 400 to 700 nm, the peak signal intensity extreme value ratio measured with the designed light source is 1.81:1, and the normalized light intensity standard deviation is 0.118. The corresponding light intensity extreme value ratio of halogen tungsten lamp and white LED is 23.3:1, 300:1, and the normalized light intensity standard deviation is 0.302, 0.228. With the help of the designed light source, a group of wave crest signals with uniform light intensity distribution can be obtained. This can reduce the influence of the SPD characteristics of the light source itself and the transmissivity characteristics of the dispersive objective lens on the measured signal, and ensure the accuracy of spectral detection.

Enhanced surface effects and optical property modulation of Ge2Sb2Te5 by pulsed laser irradiation

In this work, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) thin films are irradiated by a 1064 nm pulsed laser heat treatment system with different beam profiles. The surface effects induced by different laser conditions are studied systematically by atomic force microscope, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that a top-hat beam profile with uniform intensity distribution demonstrates the advantages of a non-destructive and homogeneous surface, which is critical for large-scale processing uniformity. The threshold laser fluence for the amorphization process is predicted by simulation and further proved by the laser irradiation experiment to be 27.9 mJ/cm2 at 1 ns pulse width. We further show that modulation of complex refractive indices of GST thin films can be achieved with different duty ratios (spatial ratio of amorphization part) from 0% to 100%. Our approach paves the way for the precise control of the optical properties of PCMs in emerging optical applications such as photonic switches, optical memories, and all-optical neural networks.

Mapping inhomogeneous network structures within biomolecular condensate using single-molecule imaging and tracking of fluorogenic probes.

Biomolecular condensates form via phase separation coupled to percolation. These phase transitions are driven by multivalent macromolecules. Network structures within condensates and the interfaces of condensates are difficult to interrogate experimentally. Here, we leverage single-molecule (SM) techniques and three fluorogenic probes, Nile blue (NB), Nile red (NR), and merocyanine 540 (MC540), to study the network structures within biomolecule condensates of the low-complexity domain of the hnRNPA1 protein (A1-LCD). Importantly, the fluorescent probes are not covalently bound to A1-LCD but instead diffuse in solution and become fluorescent in response to inhomogeneities of the local chemical environments within condensates. Interestingly, epifluorescence microscopy shows that the three probes respond in unique ways within condensates: NB gives a uniform intensity distribution, MC540 shows a higher intensity at the interface, and NR highlights hot spots inside the condensates. We then use SM localization microscopy to correlate localizations of the three probes. Surprisingly, the high-resolution SM reconstructions all show inhomogeneous network structures but with different emphases: NR shows the largest number of hotspots, NB exhibits the most spatial uniformity, and MC540 shows the greatest spatial variation within each condensate. Further, NB and MC540 localizations are highly correlated within each condensate. SM tracking experiments show that slower-moving NB molecules form high-contrast inhomogeneous network structures with hot spots, in agreement with SMLM. On the other hand, highly diffusive NB molecules are uniformly distributed throughout the condensate. We therefore conclude that network structures within the condensate are heterogeneous; protein chains with strong connections to neighboring chains form a relatively stable inhomogeneous network with hot spots, while chains with weak interactions are diffusive throughout the condensates. The mesoscale and sub-mesoscale structural organizations of molecules within condensates inferred from SM measurements agree with recent computational studies.

Inverse design of polarization-insensitive C-band Dammann grating based on dielectric metasurface

Conventional Dammann gratings control the phase profiles of light by varying the etching depths of the DOEs, suffering from a contradiction between the fabrication complexity and the output performance. Due to the advantage of the single-step fabrication procedure, the ability to locally manipulate light at a subwavelength resolution, and the possibility of vertical integration, metasurfaces have attracted extensive interest. Here, we propose polarization-independent metasurface-based Dammann gratings that can redistribute a collimated light into high efficiency wide-angle spot arrays with desired intensity distributions. We combine a hybrid optimization algorithm with the finite-difference time-domain method to optimize the supercells of the metasurfaces. To illustrate the effective control over the power distributions among the desired diffraction orders, we first optimize metasurfaces with uniform intensity distributions. As an extension of the finding, we furthermore demonstrate metasurfaces with an intensity proportion of 1: 1.5: 2 and 1: 2. The diffraction efficiency errors are 4.67 %, 3.85 %, 1.7 %, and 9.16 % with an overall efficiency reaching 89.9 %, 85 %, 90.2 %, and 77.6 % in the four designed metasurfaces. The maximal diffraction angles for 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 diffractive spot arrays are 43.2° and 49.3° from the center. The bandwidth performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed metasurfaces show high diffraction performance in the C-band fiber telecommunications window (1530–1565 nm). Owing to the accurate modulation over intensity distributions, high diffraction efficiency, large diffraction angle, wideband characteristics, polarization-insensitive property, and single-step fabrication procedure with high etching depth tolerance, the proposed gratings may have potential applications in various regions, including optical information processing, beam shaping, and depth detection.

Full-color eye-box expansion via holographic volume gratings recorded in photo-thermo-refractive glass.

Conventional head-up displays (HUDs) suffer from a limited exit pupil and a lack of compactness mainly due to the use of bulky optics. HUDs need a high-quality image with a large field of view (FOV) in small packaging to gain commercial acceptability. Holographic HUDs are phase-only devices that allow vision correction and focus adjustment while having a wide FOV. However, the limited bandwidth of a spatial light modulator (SLM) imposes a trade-off between the FOV and eye-box size. Combining a holographic system with an image-replicating element eliminates such a tradeoff. For image replication, we designed and fabricated a compact 2D diffractive beam splitter formed from two perpendicular volume gratings operating in the Raman-Nath regime. The gratings were recorded holographically in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass, with optimized index modulation, thickness, and period to provide uniform intensity distribution across all desired orders for the fundamental red, green and blue (RGB) colors. We demonstrated a full-color holographic projection with an eye-box expanded by the designed 2D diffractive beam splitters.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy with a needle-shaped beam.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) can visualize wavelength-dependent optical absorption at the cellular level. However, OR-PAM suffers from a limited depth of field (DOF) due to the tight focus of the optical excitation beam, making it challenging to acquire high-resolution images of samples with uneven surfaces or high-quality volumetric images without z-scanning. To overcome this limitation, we propose needle-shaped beam photoacoustic microscopy (NB-PAM), which can extend the DOF to up to ~28-fold Rayleigh lengths via customized diffractive optical elements (DOEs). The DOE generate a needle beam with a well-maintained beam diameter, a uniform axial intensity distribution, and negligible sidelobes. The advantage of using NB-PAM is demonstrated by both histology-like imaging of fresh slide-free organs using a 266 nm laser and in vivo mouse brain vasculature imaging using a 532 nm laser. The approach provides new perspectives for slide-free intraoperative pathological imaging and in-vivo organ-level imaging.

High-order orbital angular momentum mode conversion based on a chiral long period fiber grating inscribed in a ring core fiber.

A chiral long period fiber grating (CLPFG) was designed according to the phase-matching condition and conservation law of angular momentum, and was inscribed in a ring core fiber (RCF). This CLPFG was used to directly excite the ±2nd- and ±3rd-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. The coupling efficiency of the OAM mode is up to 98.7% and the insertion loss is within 0.5 dB. The uniformity of the annular mode intensity distribution, polarization characteristics, and the mode purity of coupled OAM modes were investigated in detail. Results show that the coupled high-order OAM modes possess a relative uniform annular intensity distribution, its mode purity is up to 93.2%, and the helical phase modulation is independent on the polarization state of incident light. These results indicate that the RCF-based CLPFG is an ideal OAM mode converter for future high-capacity optical fiber communication systems.

Fabrication of soft x-ray monolithic Wolter mirror based on surface scanning measurement using touch probe.

The monolithic Wolter mirror is an ideal optical device for focusing soft x rays to a submicron-sized spot, with the advantages of high efficiency, large acceptance, achromaticity, and robustness to alignment error. The fabrication process for this type of mirror has not been established because of the difficulty in highly accurate figure measurement of free-form surfaces with small radii of curvature and steep profiles. In this study, we employed tactile scanning measurement for surface characterization to fabricate a high-precision Wolter mirror. First, it was demonstrated that the touch probe measurement did not leave scratches on the raw surface of the mirror substrate. Next, the measurement capability of the surface profiler was assessed, and the data analysis conditions were determined. Finally, the Wolter mirror was fabricated through repeated figure correction based on the tactile measurement, and the figure error of the final surface was evaluated. Wave-optical simulations that used this error as reference suggested that the size of the beam focused by the mirror was equivalent to the theoretical value at 1000 eV. The reflected image with uniform intensity distribution obtained at SPring-8 also revealed the effectiveness of the present fabrication approach based on tactile measurement.
