Transforming Higher Education with Augmented Reality: A Comprehensive Systematic Review of Current Applications and Future Prospects

The integration of Augmented Reality into higher education has the potential to revolutionize the teaching and learning experience. This comprehensive systematic review examines the current applications of Augmented Reality in higher education and explores its future prospects. The review synthesizes findings from 30 studies published over the past decade, covering a wide range of educational levels and disciplines. The analysis reveals that Augmented Reality has been effectively used to enhance students' cognitive abilities, understanding, motivation, and learning outcomes across various domains. However, the review also identifies several challenges and limitations that must be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of Augmented Reality in higher education. This paper provides a detailed overview of the current state of Augmented Reality in higher education, offering insights that can inform educational policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in their efforts to leverage this transformative technology for the benefit of students and institutions.

Management of Sports and Recreation Centers in Karanganyar District Through Knowledge Based Worker-Based Sports Human Resources Development

This research aims to explore innovation in management through the development of knowledge-based sports human resources in the sports and recreation center of Karanganyar Regency. The main focus of this study is on the development of knowledge-based sports human resources (knowledge-based workers). In the corporate context, the development of sports human resources should involve several important aspects, including participation in training, mandatory learning, training to improve skills relevant to various modern positions, as well as providing a broad career path and competency development. In addition, performance and competency assessment as well as effective communication in providing feedback are also an integral part of this process. Knowledge-based development is considered a fundamental requirement for achieving sustainable competitive advantage. This underlines the important role of professional intellect in creating value and profits for sports and recreation centers to face business competition. A population code for spatial representation in the zebrafish telencephalon.

Spatial learning in teleost fish requires an intact telencephalon1, a brain region that contains putative analogues to components ofthe mammalian limbic system (for example, hippocampus)2-4. However, cells fundamental to spatial cognition in mammals-for example, place cells (PCs)5,6-have yet to be established in any fish species. In this study, using tracking microscopy to record brain-wide calcium activity in freely swimming larval zebrafish7, we compute the spatial information content8 of each neuron across the brain. Strikingly, in every recorded animal, cells with the highest spatial specificity were enriched in the zebrafish telencephalon. These PCs form a population code of space from which we can decode the animal's spatial location across time. By continuous recording of population-level activity, we found that the activity manifold of PCs refines and untangles over time. Through systematic manipulation of allothetic and idiothetic cues, we demonstrate that zebrafish PCs integrate multiple sources of information and can flexibly remap to form distinct spatial maps. Using analysis of neighbourhood distance between PCs across environments, we found evidence for a weakly preconfigured network in the telencephalon. The discovery of zebrafish PCs represents a step forward in our understanding of spatial cognition across species and the functional role of the early vertebrate telencephalon.

Motivating factors affecting formalization of small informal enterprises: Evidence from an emerging economy

AbstractThis study investigates the motivating factors behind the formalization of small informal enterprises in Bangladesh, an emerging economy, employing the lens of institutional theory. It emphasizes how regulatory structures, normative pressures, and cognitive understandings shape the decisions of SME owners in emerging economies like Bangladesh. A significant portion of small enterprises in Bangladesh remain informal, leading to concerns over economic development, productivity, and efficiency. Informal enterprises often face challenges such as limited access to finance, market entry barriers, and regulatory hurdles. Recognizing the need for formalization, this research aims to understand the drivers behind this transition. A questionnaire survey of 304 informal enterprises reveals that streamlined regulatory systems, particularly one‐stop solutions and simplified registration processes, are primary motivators for formalization. Additionally, flexible collateral requirements for financing and lower levels of technological adoption also significantly influence this transition. These findings contribute to the academic discourse on informal businesses in emerging economies and provide key policy implications for fostering formalization through targeted strategies and policies.

Cognitive Task Analysis: Eliciting Expert Cognition in Context

Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) is a powerful methodological approach that can enhance the rigorous elicitation and documentation of complex cognitive processes within interview-based qualitative research. We provide insights into this set of semi-structured interviewing techniques that we contend have much to offer management researchers who wish to understand the complexities of expert cognition within specific work-related tasks. Distinct from traditional semi-structured interview methods, CTA is designed to identify the knowledge requirements underpinning expertise in complex work domains. First, we present CTA as a robust approach to eliciting complex cognition and note why, when, and where management scholars might best use its techniques. Second, we provide two examples of how CTA methods have been used to research management; specifically, using the Critical Decision Method to explore management in high-stakes environments, and Applied Cognitive Task Analysis to explore global leadership. In ending, we propose greater use of this pragmatic approach in management research and highlight potential avenues for future research that will advance understanding of complex cognition at work.

How bipedalism shapes humans' actions with hand tools.

The task for an embodied cognitive understanding of humans' actions with tools is to elucidate how the human body, as a whole, supports the perception of affordances and dexterous action with objects in relation to other objects. Here, we focus on the relationship between humans' actions with handheld tools and bipedal posture. Posture plays a pivotal role in shaping animals' perception and action dynamics. While humans stand and locomote bipedally, other primates predominantly employ quadrupedal postures and locomotion, relying on both hands and feet to support the body. Drawing upon evidence from evolutionary biology, developmental psychology and performance studies, we elucidate the influence of bipedalism on our actions with objects and on our proficiency in using tools. We use the metaphor of cascades to capture the dynamic, nonlinear transformations in morphology and behaviour associated with posture and the use of tools across evolutionary and developmental timescales. Recent work illustrates the promise of multifractal cascade analysis to reveal nonlinear, cross-scale interactions across the entire body in real-time, supporting the perception of affordances for actions with tools. Cascade analysis enriches our comprehension of real-time performance and facilitates exploration of the relationships among whole-body coordination, individual development, and evolutionary processes.This article is part of the theme issue 'Minds in movement: embodied cognition in the age of artificial intelligence'.

This study aims to examine the achievements of the Turkish Language Curriculum for the second stage of primary education in North Macedonia according to the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. A qualitative research method was used in the study to determine the taxonomic distribution of the achievements of Turkish students living in North Macedonia in learning Turkish as their mother tongue. Data were collected from the Turkish Language Curricula for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades published by the North Macedonian Bureau for Development of Education. The research revealed that the Turkish Language Curriculum relies on factual and conceptual knowledge. However, it was found that metacognitive knowledge is not sufficiently included. In the cognitive process dimension, remembering and understanding were predominant, while applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating were less represented. The findings indicate that the Turkish Language Curriculum in North Macedonia needs to be updated and enriched. In conclusion, to provide students with a more comprehensive and in-depth learning experience, metacognitive knowledge and higher-level cognitive processes should be integrated into the curriculum. Let’s play! Transforming STEM education with board games

This study examines the development and effectiveness of four board games designed to promote cognitive learning activities and STEM education, focusing on kinematics and energy. We used the Engagement - Purpose - Deign - Prototype - Evaluation process to develop four board games. The study involved 53 senior high school students in Vietnam. We used a mixed methods approach to evaluate the impact of these board games on students’ cognitive understanding and motivation in STEM education. Data collection included multiple-choice tests before and post-tests from the previous literature study to measure cognitive gains. We also surveyed students using 5-point Likert scales and open-ended questions to explore their motivation and engagement. Quantitative and qualitative analyses assessed whether board games significantly improved students’ motivation and learning outcomes. These results suggest that integrating board games into STEM education can improve student engagement and understanding of STEM learning. In light of the results, we discussed the implications of the Engagement - Purpose - Deign - Prototype - Evaluation process and the effectiveness of four board games.

The Effects of Psychological Distance on the Diagnosticity of Digits to the Left Versus Right of a Separator

Many numerical expressions contain a separator such as a comma (e.g., 1,234) or a decimal point (e.g., 12.34) that divides the number into left and right parts. This research examines how individuals compare such numbers as a function of psychological distance. Integrating insights from research on diagnosticity, numerical cognition, and mental construal, the authors hypothesize that as psychological distance increases, the perceived diagnosticity of digits to the right of a separator (hereinafter “right digits”) decreases faster than that of the digits to the left of a separator (hereinafter “left digits”), which leads individuals to assign less weight to the right digits in comparative judgment. Four studies offer triangulating support for this theorizing and the underlying mechanism. In addition, the authors show that this effect is attenuated or suppressed when individuals perceive that numerical ratings are more stable over time (thereby increasing the perceived diagnosticity of right digits; Study 3) and when the distinction between left and right digits is made less obvious (e.g., when removing the digit separator; Study 4). This research offers additional nuance to our understanding of numerical cognition and how psychological distance influences the processing of different types of information.

Revisiting the Heider and Simmel experiment for social meaning attribution in virtual reality

In their seminal experiment in 1944, Heider and Simmel revealed that humans have a pronounced tendency to impose narrative meaning even in the presence of simple animations of geometric shapes. Despite the shapes having no discernible features or emotions, participants attributed strong social context, meaningful interactions, and even emotions to them. This experiment, run on traditional 2D displays has since had a significant impact on fields ranging from psychology to narrative storytelling. Virtual Reality (VR), on the other hand, offers a significantly new viewing paradigm, a fundamentally different type of experience with the potential to enhance presence, engagement and immersion. In this work, we explore and analyze to what extent the findings of the original experiment by Heider and Simmel carry over into a VR setting. We replicate such experiment in both traditional 2D displays and with a head mounted display (HMD) in VR, and use both subjective (questionnaire-based) and objective (eye-tracking) metrics to record the observers’ visual behavior. We perform a thorough analysis of this data, and propose novel metrics for assessing the observers’ visual behavior. Our questionnaire-based results suggest that participants who viewed the animation through a VR headset developed stronger emotional connections with the geometric shapes than those who viewed it on a traditional 2D screen. Additionally, the analysis of our eye-tracking data indicates that participants who watched the animation in VR exhibited fewer shifts in gaze, suggesting greater engagement with the action. However, we did not find evidence of differences in how subjects perceived the roles of the shapes, with both groups interpreting the animation’s plot at the same level of accuracy. Our findings may have important implications for future psychological research using VR, especially regarding our understanding of social cognition and emotions.

Cognitive Mechanisms of Aberrant Self-Referential Social Perception in Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder: Insights from Computational Modeling.

Individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) show disruptions in self-referential gaze perception-a social perceptual process related to symptoms and functioning. However, our current mechanistic understanding of these dysfunctions and relationships is imprecise. The present study used mathematical modeling to uncover cognitive processes driving gaze perception abnormalities in SZ and BD, and how they relate to cognition, symptoms, and social functioning. We modeled the behavior of 28 SZ, 38 BD, and 34 controls (HC) in a self-referential gaze perception task using drift-diffusion models (DDM) parameterized to index key cognitive components: drift rate (evidence accumulation efficiency), drift bias (perceptual bias), start point (expectation bias), threshold separation (response caution), and non- decision time (encoding/motor processes). Results revealed that aberrant gaze perception in SZ and BD was driven by less efficient evidence accumulation, perceptual biases predisposing self-referential responses, and greater caution (SZ only). Across SZ and HC, poorer social functioning was related to greater expectation biases. Within SZ, perceptual and expectancy biases were associated with hallucination and delusion severity, respectively. These findings indicate that diminished evidence accumulation and perceptual biases may underlie altered gaze perception in patients and that SZ may engage in compensatory cautiousness, sacrificing response speed to preserve accuracy. Moreover, biases at the belief and perceptual levels may relate to symptoms and functioning. Computational modeling can, therefore, be used to achieve a more nuanced, cognitive process-level understanding of the mechanisms of social cognitive difficulties, including gaze perception, in individuals with SZ and BD.

Persistence of Correlations in Neurotransmitter Transport through the Synaptic Cleft.

The "quantum brain" proposal can revolutionize our understanding of cognition if proven valid. The core of the most common "quantum brain" mechanism is the appearance of correlated neuron triggering induced by quantum correlations between ions. In this work, we examine the preservation of the correlations created in the pre-synaptic neurons through the transfer of neurotransmitters across the synaptic cleft, a critical ingredient for the validity of the "quantum brain" hypothesis. We simulated the transport of two neurotransmitters at two different clefts, with the only assumption that they start simultaneously, and determined the difference in their first passage times. We show that in physiological conditions, the correlations are persistent even if the parameters of the two neurons are different.

Bridging the Intention-Behavior Gap in Organic Food Consumption: Empirical Evidence from China.

The transition to a low-carbon economy emphasizes the importance of green and low-carbon consumption; yet, there is often a discrepancy between consumers' intentions and their actual behavior regarding organic foods. This study aims to identify strategies to bridge this gap. The research model of organic food consumption intention and behavior is constructed, and a structural equation model is used to test the research hypotheses based on a valid sample of 480 residents of Guangdong Province through an online questionnaire survey. Further, the intention‒behavior gap is defined and its determinants are investigated through multiclass logistic regression. Finally, we categorize and forecast the alignment between consumption intentions and behaviors using machine learning algorithms. The results reveal that attitudes, social interactions, and cognitive information play crucial roles in aligning intentions with behaviors. By enhancing social information exchange or improving cognitive understanding, consumers can reduce their intention‒behavior discrepancy. This research offers valuable policy recommendations for fostering green consumption among residents from various perspectives.

Being good and feeling good: What happiness means to children

AbstractHappiness is one of the most important parenting goals in today's modern society. To promote a happy childhood, we need to understand what happiness means to children. Contrary to the view that young children may equate happiness with satisfying material desires and experiencing simple pleasures, in this article, I review recent developmental research showing that (1) even young children have a sophisticated understanding about the role of desire satisfaction in happiness, (2) they perceive happiness as contingent on moral goodness, and (3) they experience happiness from performing morally good behaviors. Together, the findings suggest that for children, happiness means more than feeling good about satisfying material desires and experiencing simple pleasures; it also means being good to oneself and others. This research deepens our understanding of children's emotional cognition and experience, elucidates the nature and origins of happiness, and has significant implications for fostering a happy childhood and beyond.

Improving Students' Cognitive Understanding of Natural Selection Topics Through PhET Simulations

Natural selection is one of the topics of evolution material that is considered difficult for students, so it is necessary to have a practicum to help in understanding this material. Limited laboratory equipment in schools is an obstacle to learning evolution, so learning media are needed to support evolution learning. One of the learning media that can be applied is PhET simulation. PhET simulation supports evolution learning because it provides simulations in the form of processes of how living things experience natural selection mechanisms. This service program aims to describe students' cognitive understanding of the topic of natural selection with the help of the PhET simulation application. This activity is expected to be used as reference material for teachers who conduct practicums with the help of the PhET simulation application. The subjects who participated in this service activity were 30 students in class XII MIPA. The service activities were carried out on June 16–23, 2023, at SMAN 4 Tuban. The service activities carried out include training, discussion, and guidance. Based on the results of the program, it can be seen that the trainees were very enthusiastic about participating in the PhET simulation activities, the use of PhET simulation was easy to apply, and the trainees were easier to understand the material with the help of this application (87% of the time).

Two fundamentally different mechanisms by which unconscious information impairs behavioral performance: Evidence from fMRI and computational modeling

It is increasingly clear that unconscious information impairs the performance of the corresponding action when the instruction to act is delayed. However, whether this impairment occurs at the response level or at the perceptual level remains controversial. This study used fMRI and a computational model with a pre-post design to address this elusive issue. The fMRI results showed that when the unconscious information containing strong stimulus-response associations was irrelevant to subsequent stimuli, the precuneus in the parietal lobe, which is thought to be involved in sensorimotor processing, was activated. In contrast, when the unconscious information was relevant to subsequent stimuli, regardless of the strength of the stimulus-response associations, some regions in the occipital and temporal cortices, which are thought to be involved in visual perceptual processing, were activated. In addition, the percent signal change in the regions of interest associated with motor inhibition was modulated by compatibility in the irrelevant but not in the relevant stimuli conditions. Modeling of behavioral data further supported that the irrelevant and relevant stimuli conditions involved fundamentally different mechanisms. Our finding reconciles the debate about the mechanism by which unconscious information impairs action performance and has important implications for understanding of unconscious cognition.

Feline Cognition and the Role of Nutrition: An Evolutionary Perspective and Historical Review.

Research into cognition in cats and the impact of nutrition on cat cognitive health lags behind that in dogs but is receiving increased attention. In this review, we discuss the evolutionary history of the domesticated cat, describe possible drivers of domestication, and explore the interrelationships between nutrition and cat cognition. While most cat species are solitary, domesticated cats can live in social groups, engage in complex social encounters, and form strong attachments to humans. Researchers have recently started to study cat cognition using similar methods as those developed for dogs, with an initial primary focus on perception and social cognition. Similar to dogs, cats also show cognitive and behavioral changes associated with stress and aging, but these signs are often gradual and often considered a consequence of natural aging. Despite the fundamental role of nutrition in cognitive development, function, and maintenance, research into the association between nutrition and cognition in cats is only preliminary. Ultimately, additional research is needed to gain a full understanding of cat cognition and to explore the role of nutrition in the cognitive health of cats to help improve their welfare.

History of mathematical concepts and students’ cognitive understanding of mathematics: Effect of pedagogical content knowledge

This study aimed to explore the relationship between teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), students’ interest and motivation in the history of mathematical (HoM) concepts, and students’ cognitive understanding (SCU) of mathematics. A five-level Likert scale questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from 232 junior high school mathematics teachers. It was found that, on average, students have higher levels of interest, motivation, and cognitive understanding when they are taught utilizing HoM concepts as a pedagogy. The correlation analysis reveals that there is a positive relationship between each of the independent variables and the dependent variable. The regression analysis also shows that teachers’ PCK and students’ interest were strong predictors of SCU, while students’ motivation was a weaker predictor. Hence, it can be said that teachers’ PCK and students’ interest play crucial roles in promoting SCU of using HoM concepts. Further studies are recommended to explore how historical context impacts students’ confidence, enjoyment, and aspirations in mathematics-related fields, which would contribute to understanding the broader implications of incorporating history in mathematics instruction.

THE DIALECTIC OF ISLAMIC LITERACY AND ADAT CONSERVATION: REMOTE COMMUNITY RECEPTION OF HADITHS IN THE KHUTBAH NAGA MANUSCRIPT OF WEST PAPUA

This study seeks to explore the pattern of hadith reception in the da’wah practices within the Muslim community of Lilinta, Raja Ampat. In particular, it aims to explore how the hadith text, articulated in Arabic, continues to influence local behaviors, beliefs and customs, despite the community’s lack of cognitive understanding of the language. Employing the living hadith approach and adopting Stuart Hall’s reception theory, this study reveals that Lilinta community demonstrates a habitus pattern of ‘negotiation’ in hadith reception. This study found that while on the one hand the redaction of the hadith was not literally understood by the local Muslims, but the essence of hadith was practiced as cultural doctrines. The pattern of hadith transformation suggests that the hadith and its practices co-exist on divergent paths. Practice transpires through doctrinal channels, while the narrative remains misunderstood. This communal-practical living hadith, grounded in habitus rather than cognition, culmi­nates in robust, albeit static traditions. This study concludes that hadith effectively molds the behavior and beliefs of the Lilinta community when viewed from the practiced behaviors over cognitive understanding.

Towards canine brain–computer interfaces (BCIs)

Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have shown remarkable potential in human neuroscience and medicine. Yet, their application with animals, in particular canines, remains largely unexplored. This paper delves into the background, systems overview, implementation details, potential features, prospective use-cases and challenges of canine BCIs. While the focus is on EEG-based BCIs, other modalities such as fNIRS are also discussed. Despite significant challenges, such as hardware design and data inference, I argue that canine BCIs hold potential to significantly push forward our understanding of canine cognition, and facilitate a higher bandwidth of human-canine communication, collaboration, and flourishing.
