A Rock and a Hard Place:

This paper discusses the importance of fieldwork in preparing students for practice with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds and the difficulties encountered in rural, culturally homogenous settings. A survey of undergraduate fieldwork coordinators provided information about how minority content is integrated into field seminars and the fieldwork experience. The findings indicated that a variety of methods are used in the seminar and field experience. A discussion of the limitations of these methods and recommendations for alternative approaches are provided.

Is Quality Field Education a Matter of Academic Credentials?

Concomitant with the growth of baccalaureate social work programs over the last decade has been a growing concern over student supervision at the participating field work agencies. In an effort to learn more about thIs aspect of the field education curriculum, a questionnaire was sent to the undergraduate Field Work Directors at 299 C.S.W.E. accredited programs. Results underscore continued reliance on supervisors with academic training in social work. The use of non-academically trained social workers seems to pivot around student's interest and resources available, and points to a possible need for training in the area of social work values.

Admissions variables and the Prediction of Success in an Undergraduate Fieldwork Program

Admissions decisions at the undergraduate level are complicated by both the youth and the grade point average range of the applicants, yet little research has been done on the relationship between preadmission variables and outcome. This study relates junior-level grade point average, student birth year, assertion inventory scores, previous organization leadership and membership roles, volunteer experience, and work experience, to later performance ratings in an undergraduate fieldwork program for 83 BSW students. The performance ratings were done by university faculty liaisons after input from the agency supervisor. The multiple regression analysis indicated that only grade point average and age were significant success predictors. Younger students with higher grade points performed better in the fieldwork program.

A TWO-WEEK FIELD COURSE WITH DEFERRED PAPERS: A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF UNDERGRADUATE FIELD WORK

Abstract Field work is an important but often neglected facet of a sound undergraduate geography training program. Literature, both geographic and nongeographic, offers very few practical suggestions or realistic approaches that can be utilized in some way by geography departments organizing undergraduate field programs. This article eliminates a hiatus in the literature for it analyzes field work, explores proven methods of undergraduate field training, and describes the importance of the selection of a study area and field camp site. It stresses the value of careful organization, and problems of topic selection and field data generation, and provides a detailed model, a proven schedule, concomitantly with a sound approach to field work. The two-week field course with deferred papers is an immediate, realistic, and inexpensive solution to the problem of undergraduate field work.
