The continuum of dental education--one year on.

Continuing professional development should embrace all aspects of our professional life. Changes in the pattern of oral disease, developing concepts of specialisation and delivery of dental care require a flexible approach to the interface between the end of the undergraduate dental course and the early years of general professional training. This report lists a number of proposals agreed by an ad hoc working group, meeting under the auspices of the General Dental Council.

Active learning in the United Kingdom undergraduate dental course.

'Active Learning' is a frequently encountered term much in vogue in educational circles and widely considered in many current textbooks and papers. It is, however, a most difficult term to define. This paper seeks firstly to explore and discuss the meaning of the term with special relation to undergraduate dental education, and then, in a consideration of the different approaches to studying, considers aspects of the current dental undergraduate curriculum, both teaching and assessment, which may have an influence on the student's approach to learning.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills of dental personnel.

This study assessed the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills of 25 dental personnel. Theory was tested by multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) and practical skills assessed using a recording Resusci-Anne manikin. The assessment was based upon the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council of the UK. Seven of the 16 dental students and six of the nine house officers tested passed the MCQ examination. All failed the practical assessment. It is concluded that more emphasis should be placed upon CPR instruction in undergraduate dental courses and that regular update courses are advisable to maintain CPR skill.
