A two-year clinical study of light-cured composite and amalgam restorations in primary molars

The object of this prospective study was to compare the clinical behavior of composite and amalgam restorations with respect to anatomical form, marginal adaptation, caries adjacent to margin, and post-operative sensitivity. We selected children (n = 43) with an average age of 6.4 yr exhibiting proximal caries lesions in primary molars distributed on both left and right sides. In each child, one amalgam and one composite side were randomly chosen, resulting in 64 fillings for composite and 55 for amalgam. After a two-year period, significantly (p < 0.05) more composite fillings (88%) were clinically classified as satisfactory compared with amalgam fillings (68%). No significant relationship was found between the success rate of proximal fillings and the caries activity of the individuals. The results indicate that composite can be used successfully as a class II filling material in primary molars in children.

Examining Tooth Flexure Effects on Cervical Restorations: A Two-Year Clinical Study

This study evaluated the clinical performance of dentinal adhesives in seven various material/technique combinations. No statistically significant differences were observed among the restorative combinations, or among technique variables after two years in terms of retention, sensitivity or USPHS categories. However, other factors related to tooth flexure--such as occlusal stress, patient age, restorative material and restoration location--showed statistically significant associations with retention failures. These results support a tooth flexural theory of restoration retention.

Two-year clinical study of composite resins in posterior teeth.

Abstract Lack of resistance to abrasion and loss of anatomic form have characteristically been attendant problems of first generation composite resins placed in posterior teeth. Variations in method of polymerization, filler content, particle size, and particle composition have been attempted to improve clinical characteristics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of 5 different composite resins placed in Class I and Class II preparations. All restorations were evaluated directly using USPHS criteria. Indirect evaluations of the restorations on diestone casts were made to categorize quantitatively the amount of occlusal wear. No statistically significant differences among the materials regarding wear were observed when using USPHS criteria. However, statistically significant differences in the results detected by indirect evaluation suggest that loss of anatomic form may be related to the size and composition of the filler particles in the resin restorative materials.

A two-year clinical study was conducted in vivo to assess the dentin wear caused by dentifrices; results were correlated and compared with those obtained in vitro.

The effects of varying the application protocol on the retention of pit and fissure sealant: a two-year clinical study

The clinical effects of procedural variations on sealant retention are evaluated, and the caries status of sealed teeth and contra-lateral control teeth is compared. Four different protocols of application were used to evaluate sealant retention and caries status after standardized radiographic and clinical diagnosis. Reexaminations were performed at 6, 12, and 24 months. High caries reductions were found for all groups; however, premolars were less affected with occlusal caries than were molars. Tooth type and caries potential of the individuals must be considered when sealants are used.

Effect of a Combination of Two Cariostatic Agents in Children: Two-Year Clinical Study of Supervised Brushing in Children’s Homes

In a two-year clinical study of dental caries conducted in six institutional homes for children, two experimental dentifrices were used. Slightly different combinations of sodium monofluorophosphate and sodium n-lauroyl sarcosinate effected a statistically lower incidence of dental caries than the control toothpaste. The rates of incidence of dental caries were comparable for the children who used the two experimental dentifrices. In a two-year clinical study of dental caries conducted in six institutional homes for children, two experimental dentifrices were used. Paraben allergy. A cause of intractable dermatitis.

Paraben esters are incorporated in most dermatologic and cosmetic creams and lotions as preservatives. A two-year clinical study on the allergenic potential of these bacteriostatic and fungistatic chemicals showed that of 273 consecutive patients with chronic dermatitis who were routinely patch tested to 5% paraben in petrolatum had paraben allergy, an 0.8% incidence. Strongly positive patch test reactions in four patients with marked paraben allergy correlated well with the clinical course. Patients with contact dermatitis caused by paraben allergy present with long histories of intractable dermatitis which continues to flare regardless of the corticosteroid cream prescribed. Once the proper diagnosis is recognized and a paraben free medication is applied, these patients make a rapid and complete recovery. Paraben allergy must be suspected in any patient who gives a long history of recalcitrant dermatitis which has not responded to customary dermatologic diagnostic and therapeutic technique.

Effect of SnF2 dentrifices on caries in children: Two-year clinical study of supervised brushing in children’s homes

A stannous fluoride-insoluble sodium metaphosphate dentifrice proved effective in reducing caries. It, a control dentifrice without stannous fluoride, and a stannous fluoride-calcium pyrophosphate toothpaste were used by subjects in children's homes. Differences between either SnF₂ dentifrice and the control dentifrice were significant.
