Interface dynamics in the two-dimensional quantum Ising model

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 120601] we have shown that the dynamics of interfaces, in the symmetry-broken phase of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic quantum Ising model, displays a robust form of ergodicity breaking. In this paper, we elaborate more on the issue. First, we discuss two classes of initial states on the square lattice, the dynamics of which is driven by complementary terms in the effective Hamiltonian and may be solved exactly: (a) strips of consecutive neighbouring spins aligned in the opposite direction of the surrounding spins, and (b) a large class of initial states, characterized by the presence of a well-defined "smooth" interface separating two infinitely extended regions with oppositely aligned spins. The evolution of the latter states can be mapped onto that of an effective one-dimensional fermionic chain, which is integrable in the infinite-coupling limit. In this case, deep connections with noteworthy results in mathematics emerge, as well as with similar problems in classical statistical physics. We present a detailed analysis of the evolution of these interfaces both on the lattice and in a suitable continuum limit, including the interface fluctuations and the dynamics of entanglement entropy. Second, we provide analytical and numerical evidence supporting the conclusion that the observed non-ergodicity -- arising from Stark localization of the effective fermionic excitations -- persists away from the infinite-Ising-coupling limit, and we highlight the presence of a timescale $T\sim e^{c L\ln L}$ for the decay of a region of large linear size $L$. The implications of our work for the classic problem of the decay of a false vacuum are also discussed.

Simulation of exact quantum Ising models with a Mott insulator of paired atoms

Quantum simulation of the XXZ model with a two-component Bose or Fermi Hubbard model based on a Mott insulator background has been widely used in the investigations of quantum magnetism with ultracold neutral atoms. In most cases, the diagonal spin-spin interaction is always accompanied by a large spin-exchange interaction which hinders the formation of long-range magnetic order at low temperature. Here we show that the spin-exchange interaction can be strongly reduced in a Mott insulator of paired atoms, while the diagonal spin-spin interaction remains unaffected. Thus, the effective magnetic model is quite close to an exact classical Ising model in the textbook. And we analysed an experimentally achievable three-component Fermi-Hubbard model of $\mathrm{{}^{6}Li}$ with two hyperfine levels of atoms paired in the lattice. We find the long-range antiferromagnetic order of such a three-component Fermi-Hubbard model can be much stronger than that of a typical two-component Fermi-Hubbard model at low temperature. And we discussed the possiblity of simulating an exact two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in a Mott insulator of paired bosonic atoms. Our results may be useful for experimental investigation of the long-range Ising-like magnetism with ultracold neutral atoms under thermal equilibrium.

Energy-lowering and constant-energy spin flips: Emergence of the percolating cluster in the kinetic Ising model.

After a sudden quench from the disordered high-temperature T_{0}→∞ phase to a final temperature well below the critical point T_{F}≪T_{c}, the nonconserved order parameter dynamics of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice initially approaches the critical percolation state before entering the coarsening regime. This approach involves two timescales associated with the first appearance (at time t_{p_{1}}>0) and stabilization (at time t_{p}>t_{p_{1}}) of a giant percolation cluster, as previously reported. However, the microscopic mechanisms that control such timescales are not yet fully understood. In this paper, to study their role on each time regime after the quench (T_{F}=0), we distinguish between spin flips that decrease the total energy of the system from those that keep it constant, the latter being parametrized by the probability p. We show that observables such as the cluster size heterogeneity H(t,p) and the typical domain size ℓ(t,p) have no dependence on p in the first time regime up to t_{p_{1}}. Furthermore, when energy-decreasing flips are forbidden while allowing constant-energy flips, the kinetics is essentially frozen after the quench and there is no percolation event whatsoever. Taken together, these results indicate that the emergence of the first percolating cluster at t_{p_{1}} is completely driven by energy decreasing flips. However, the time for stabilizing a percolating cluster is controlled by the acceptance probability of constant-energy flips: t_{p}(p)∼p^{-1} for p≪1 (at p=0, the dynamics gets stuck in a metastable state). These flips are also the relevant ones in the later coarsening regime where dynamical scaling takes place. Because the phenomenology on the approach to the percolation point seems to be shared by many 2D systems with a nonconserved order parameter dynamics (and certain cases of conserved ones as well), our results may suggest a simple and effective way to set, through the dynamics itself, t_{p_{1}} and t_{p} in such systems.

Nonequilibrium phase transition in an Ising model without detailed balance.

We study a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in which spins are updated using modified versions of the Metropolis and Glauber algorithms. These update rules do not obey the detailed balance condition. The steady-state behavior of the model is studied using molecular field theory and Monte Carlo simulations. This model is found to exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transition from a "paramagnetic" state with zero magnetization to a "ferromagnetic" state with nonzero magnetization as the variable that plays the role of temperature in the spin updates is decreased. From detailed Monte Carlo simulations using the modified Metropolis algorithm, we demonstrate explicitly the nonequilibrium nature of the transition and show that it cannot be described as an equilibrium transition with an effective temperature different from the temperature used in the spin updates. The critical exponents that characterize the singular behavior near this continuous phase transition are calculated from finite size scaling of specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility, and correlation length. We find that the values of these exponents are the same (within error bars) as those of the equilibrium Ising model in two dimensions.

Zero-temperature ordering dynamics in a two-dimensional biaxial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model.

We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional biaxial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model following a quench to zero temperature. The Hamiltonian is given by H=-J_{0}∑_{i,j=1}^{L}[(S_{i,j}S_{i+1,j}+S_{i,j}S_{i,j+1})-κ(S_{i,j}S_{i+2,j}+S_{i,j}S_{i,j+2})]. For κ<1, the system does not reach the equilibrium ground state and keeps evolving in active states forever. For κ≥1, though, the system reaches a final state, but it does not reach the ground state always and freezes to a striped state with a finite probability like a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model and an axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model. The overall dynamical behavior for κ>1 and κ=1 is quite different. The residual energy decays in a power law for both κ>1 and κ=1 from which the dynamical exponent z has been estimated. The persistence probability shows algebraic decay for κ>1 with an exponent θ=0.22±0.002 while the dynamical exponent for ordering z=2.33±0.01. For κ=1, the system belongs to a completely different dynamical class with θ=0.332±0.002 and z=2.47±0.04. We have computed the freezing probability for different values of κ. We have also studied the decay of autocorrelation function with time for a different regime of κ values. The results have been compared with those of the two-dimensional ANNNI model.

Coarsening and percolation in a disordered ferromagnet.

By studying numerically the phase-ordering kinetics of a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model with quenched disorder (either random bonds or random fields) we show that a critical percolation structure forms at an early stage. This structure is then rendered more and more compact by the ensuing coarsening process. Our results are compared to the nondisordered case, where a similar phenomenon is observed, and they are interpreted within a dynamical scaling framework.

Irreversible simulated tempering algorithm with skew detailed balance conditions: a learning method of weight factors in simulated tempering

Recent numerical studies concerning simulated tempering algorithm without the detailed balance condition are reviewed and an irreversible simulated tempering algorithm based on the skew detailed balance condition is described. A method to estimate weight factors in simulated tempering by sequentially implementing the irreversible simulated tempering algorithm is studied in comparison with the conventional simulated tempering algorithm satisfying the detailed balance condition. It is found that the total amount of Monte Carlo steps for estimating the weight factors is successfully reduced by applying the proposed method to an two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model.

Universal Finite Size Corrections and the Central Charge in Non-solvable Ising Models

We investigate a non solvable two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model with nearest neighbor plus weak finite range interactions of strength \lambda. We rigorously establish one of the predictions of Conformal Field Theory (CFT), namely the fact that at the critical temperature the finite size corrections to the free energy are universal, in the sense that they are exactly independent of the interaction. The corresponding central charge, defined in terms of the coefficient of the first subleading term to the free energy, as proposed by Affleck and Blote-Cardy-Nightingale, is constant and equal to 1/2 for all 0<\lambda<\lambda_0 and \lambda_0 a small but finite convergence radius. This is one of the very few cases where the predictions of CFT can be rigorously verified starting from a microscopic non solvable statistical model. The proof uses a combination of rigorous renormalization group methods with a novel partition function inequality, valid for ferromagnetic interactions.

Non-equilibrium phase transition in the kinetic Ising model driven by a propagating magnetic field wave

The two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the presence of a propagating magnetic field wave (with a well-defined frequency and wavelength) was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. This study differs from similar earlier studies, because in earlier studies the oscillating magnetic field was considered to be uniform in space. The time averaged magnetization over a full cycle (the time period) of the propagating magnetic field acted as the dynamic order parameter. The dynamical phase transition was observed. The temperature variation of the dynamic order parameter, the mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter, the dynamic specific heat and the derivative of the dynamic order parameter were studied. The mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter and the dynamic specific heat show sharp maxima near the transition point. The derivative of the dynamic order parameter shows a sharp minimum near the transition point. The transition temperature is found to depend also on the speed of propagation of the magnetic field wave.

A finite-volume version of Aizenman–Higuchi theorem for the 2d Ising model

In the late 1970s, in two celebrated papers, Aizenman and Higuchi independently established that all infinite-volume Gibbs measures of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor Ising model are convex combinations of the two pure phases. We present here a new approach to this result, with a number of advantages: (i) We obtain an optimal finite-volume, quantitative analogue (implying the classical claim); (ii) the scheme of our proof seems more natural and provides a better picture of the underlying phenomenon; (iii) this new approach might be applicable to systems for which the classical method fails.

Critical behavior of the pure and random-bond two-dimensional triangular Ising ferromagnet

We investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on the critical properties of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model embedded in a triangular lattice. The system is studied in both the pure and disordered versions by the same efficient two-stage Wang-Landau method. In the first part of our study, we present the finite-size scaling behavior of the pure model, for which we calculate the critical amplitude of the specific heat's logarithmic expansion. For the disordered system, the numerical data and the relevant detailed finite-size scaling analysis along the lines of the two well-known scenarios-logarithmic corrections versus weak universality--strongly support the field-theoretically predicted scenario of logarithmic corrections. A particular interest is paid to the sample-to-sample fluctuations of the random model and their scaling behavior that are used as a successful alternative approach to criticality.

Effect of next-nearest neighbor interactions on the dynamic order parameter of the Kinetic Ising model in an oscillating field

We study the effects of next-nearest neighbor (NNN) interactions in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic kinetic Ising model exposed to an oscillating field. By tuning the interaction ratio (p=JNNN/JNN) of the NNN (JNNN) to the nearest-neighbor (NN) interaction (JNN) we find that the model undergoes a transition from a regime in which the dynamic order parameter Q is equal to zero to a phase in which Q is not equal to zero. From our studies we conclude that the model can exhibit an interaction induced transition from a deterministic to a stochastic state. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the systemsˆˆe2ˆˆ80ˆˆ99 metastable lifetime is sensitive not only to the lattice size, external field amplitude, and temperature (as found in earlier studies) but also to additional interactions present in the system.

Critical behaviour of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

We use a new updated algorithm scheme to investigate the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice with the nearest neighbour interactions. The transition is examined by generating accurate data for lattices with L = 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50. The updated spin algorithm we employ has the advantages of both a Metropolis algorithm and a single-update method. Our study indicates that the transition is continuous at Tc = 3.6403(2). A convincing finite-size scaling analysis of the model yields ν = 0.9995(21), β/ν = 0.12400(17), γ/ν = 1.75223(22), γ′/ν = 1.7555(22), α/ν = 0.00077(420) (scaling) and α/ν = 0.0010(42) (hyperscaling). The present scheme yields more accurate estimates for all the critical exponents than the Monte Carlo method, and our estimates are shown to be in excellent agreement with their predicted values.

Zero-temperature dynamics in the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model following a quench to zero temperature. The Hamiltonian is given by H= -J_(0) summation operator(L)_(i,j=1)S_(i,j)S_(i+1,j)-J_(1)summation operator_(i,j=1)(S_{i,j}S_{i,j+1}-kappaS_{i,j}S_{i,j+2}) . For kappa<1 , the system does not reach the equilibrium ground state but slowly evolves to a metastable state. For kappa>1 , the system shows a behavior similar to that of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the sense that it freezes to a striped state with a finite probability. The persistence probability shows algebraic decay here with an exponent theta=0.235+/-0.001 while the dynamical exponent of growth z=2.08+/-0.01 . For kappa=1 , the system belongs to a completely different dynamical class; it always evolves to the true ground state with the persistence and dynamical exponent having unique values. Much of the dynamical phenomena can be understood by studying the dynamics and distribution of the number of domain walls. We also compare the dynamical behavior to that of a Ising model in which both the nearest and next-nearest-neighbor interactions are ferromagnetic.

Stripe width and nonlocal domain walls in the two-dimensional dipolar frustrated Ising ferromagnet

We describe a novel type of magnetic domain wall which, in contrast to Bloch or Neel walls, is non-localized and, in a certain temperature range, non-monotonic. The wall appears as the mean-field solution of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model frustrated by the long-ranged dipolar interaction. We provide experimental evidence of this wall delocalization in the stripe-domain phase of perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin magnetic films. In agreement with experimental results, we find that the stripe width decreases with increasing temperature and approaches a finite value at the Curie-temperature following a power law. The same kind of wall and a similar temperature dependence of the stripe width is expected in the mean-field approximation of the two-dimensional Coulomb frustrated Ising ferromagnet.

Ising model on a hyperbolic lattice studied by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method

We study a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a series of regular lattices, which are represented as a tessellation of polygons with p ⩾ 5 sides, such as pentagons (p = 5), hexagons (p = 6), etc. Such lattices are on hyperbolic planes, which have constant negative scalar curvatures. We calculate critical temperatures and scaling exponents by the use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. As a result, the mean-field-like phase transition is observed for all the cases p ⩾ 5. Convergence of the calculated transition temperatures with respect to p is investigated toward the limit p → ∞, where the system coincides with the Ising model on the Bethe lattice.

Correction to scaling in the response function of the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model

The aging part Rag(t,s) of the impulsive response function of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model, quenched below the critical point, is studied numerically employing an algorithm without the imposition of the external field. We find that the simple scaling form Rag(t,s)=s-(1+a)f(t/s), which is usually believed to hold in the aging regime, is not obeyed. We analyze the data assuming the existence of a correction to scaling. We find a=0.273+/-0.006, in agreement with previous numerical results obtained from the zero field cooled magnetization. We investigate in detail also the scaling function f(t/s) and we compare the results with the predictions of analytical theories. We make an ansatz for the correction to scaling, deriving an analytical expression for Rag(t,s). This gives a satisfactory qualitative agreement with the numerical data for Rag(t,s) and for the integrated response functions. With the analytical model we explore the overall behavior, extrapolating beyond the time regime accessible with the simulations. We explain why the data for the zero field cooled susceptibility are not too sensitive to the existence of the correction to scaling in Rag(t,s), making this quantity the most convenient for the study of the asymptotic scaling properties.

Persistence in the zero-temperature dynamics of the random Ising ferromagnet on a Voronoi–Delaunay lattice

The zero-temperature Glauber dynamic is used to investigate the persistence probability P( t) in the random two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a Voronoi–Delaunay tessellation. We consider the coupling factor J varying with the distance r between the first neighbors to be J( r)∝e − αr , with α⩾0. The persistence probability P(∞), that does not depend on time t, is found to achieve a non-zero value that depends on the parameter α. Nevertheless, the quantity p( t)= P( t)− P(∞) decays exponentially to zero over long times. Furthermore, the fraction of spins that do not change at a time t is a monotonically increasing function of the parameter α. Our results are consistent with those obtained for the diluted ferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice.

The ferromagnetic Ising model on a Voronoi–Delaunay lattice

We investigate the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the Voronoi–Delaunay tesselation. In this study, we assume that the coupling factor J varies with the distance r between the first neighbors as J( r)∝e − αr , with α⩾0. The disordered system is simulated applying the single-cluster Monte Carlo update algorithm and the reweighting technique. We calculate the critical point exponents γ/ν, β/ν and ν for this model and find that this random system belongs to the same universality class as the pure two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model.
