Bilateral tubal and twin pregnancies in Ile-Ife, Nigeria

Three cases of unilateral tubal twin pregnancies and four cases of simultaneous bilateral tubal pregnancy recorded in a Nigerian University Teaching Hospital were reviewed. The incidences were 1 in 68 and 1 in 51 ectopic pregnancies respectively. High twinning rates within the environment and tubal damage from pelvic infections were considered as possible etiologic factors.

A case of simultaneous interstitial bilateral pregnancy.

Twin pregnancies may present tubal involvement in the following cases: (1) simultaneous intra- and extrauterine pregnancy; (2) interstitial bilateral pregnancy (either simultaneous or not); (3) multiple pregnancy in the same tube; and (4) simultaneous interstitial and ovarian pregnancy. Interstitial bilateral pregnancy appears to be by far the rarest kind of tubal twin pregnancy, apparently only one case having been reported in the literature, and this referring to a nonsimultaneous pregnancy. A case is now reported that therefore appears to represent the first observation of simultaneous interstitial bilateral pregnancy.

Abstract Up to Dec. 31, 1957, only 81 well-authenticated cases of unilateral tubal twin pregnancy had been reported. A further case is reported in which the adjacent ovary contained two distinct corpora lutea, suggesting the possibility of a tubal dizygotic twin pregnancy.
