Authenticity in the Zhuangzi ? Contemporary Misreadings of Zhen 真and an Alternative to Existentialism

This essay reviews the Zhuangzian notion of zhen 真, often through the text’s advancement of the zhenren 真人 (“genuine person,” “true person”) or zhenzhi 真知 (“genuine knowledge,” “true knowledge”). Contemporary scholarship, in both Chinese and English, often presents zhen as analogous to the existentialist theory of authenticity, which correspondingly reflects on interpretations of the “self,” and thereby the zhen person. Much of the Zhuangzi is a reaction to the Lunyu , including an ironic response to the Confucian cultivation project. If we establish our interpretation of the “self” against this background then we find that zhen in the Zhuangzi is actually used to argue against the Confucian identification of the person and self through social roles or conventions. However, advocating zhen does not suggest that there is some essential or core “self” to refer to; instead, it implies a natural state of responsiveness where the person acts efficaciously by being in line with what is obvious or affirmed in the situation. This essay thereby presents a reading of zhen that is historically and culturally consistent, and sets up the Zhuangzi as an alternative, and not an echo, to some of the major issues dealt with by the existentialist movement.

The Relationship Between Personality and Student Learning

This exploratory study examines the relationship between personality and classroom performance. The personality measure is True Colors, the testing is measured by results on a paper-and-pencil test in a senior-level human resource management course at a large southeastern U.S. university, and the performance assessment is grades on written assignments. The link between personality and testing is contentious, with some researchers stating a definitive link between the two and other authors stating no link between the two components. Results of the data analysis suggest that the Blue, Gold, and Orange colors of the True Colors personality traits influence student learning in the classroom. By understanding the relationship between a student’s personality and his or her success in the classroom, an instructor can enhance student learning.

Masked men: hacktivism, celebrity and anonymity

In her 1991 article ‘Signs of Melodrama’ Christine Gledhill provocatively claimed that the Hollywood star system descended from the stage melodrama’s ‘drive to realise in personal terms social and ethical forces’. The disguise is a melodramatic convention, concealing the true personality revealed in the narrative, as the melodrama reveals hidden moral truths. Approaching contemporary celebrity through this dramatic mode, this article considers the unmasking of Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden in three recent films, We Steal Secrets, The Fifth Estate and Citizenfour. In true melodramatic style, the films’ presentation of state violence and surveillance is rapidly displaced by moral studies of these three ‘hacktivists’. Drawing on melodrama and genre studies as a methodological approach to studying these films, I trace the mask back to Alan Moore’s anti-melodrama V for Vendetta. This article proposes celebrity studies would be well served by paying closer attention to the political efficacy of celebrity’s opposite: anonymity.

An Eidetic Reflex and Moment of Breakthrough in Time and Scientific Creation: 10 Years of Progress in Physics, 100 Years of General Relativity, and the Zelmanov Cosmological Group

We celebrate the first 10-year momentous span of the solid body of critical scientific results and efforts delivered by the visionary editorial and founding team of the pioneering open new-millennium journal for advanced studies in theoretical and experimental physics, mathematics, astronomy, and cosmology, Progress in Physics (see the Editor-in-Chief’s message: “Progress in Physics: 10 years in Print”), behind which is the core scientists and guardians of universal scientific creation, scientific revolution, and scientific-intellectual freedom and ethics: the few core scientists of the quintessential Zelmanov Cosmological Group, such as the founding editors and scientific creators Dmitri Rabounski and Larissa Borissova. The Zelmanov Cosmological Group, which is also behind The Abraham Zelmanov Journal for General Relativity, gravitation, and cosmology, dedicates itself to the profound and extensive scope and depth of the works of the master theoretician “par excellence” of the Soviet-era general relativistic and cosmological school, Abraham Leonidovich Zelmanov, and to the most unique problems and possible extensions of General Relativity in general. Abraham Zelmanov’s profundity “sine qua non” is reflected in the singular creation of the theories of chronometric, kinemetric, and orthometric (monad) formalism in General Relativity, the Infinite Relativity Principle, the Anthropic Principle, the extensive classification of all possible cosmologicalmodels in the space-time of General Relativity (the Zelmanov Classification, including the possibility of absolute reference frames in a deforming, rotating, gravitating closed finite Universe), and many others (see the website of The Abraham Zelmanov Journal for details, and in particular the 2012 foreword to the book Particles Here and Beyond the Mirror). So, Zelmanov’s theoretical mastery singularly encompasses the general fully non-linear, anisotropic, inhomogeneous, anholonomic, non-simply-connected spacetime structure (and sub-structure) of General Relativity and the fabric of the cosmos, achieving the unification of the underlying structure of space-time, reference frame systems, and the fundamental observer. Zelmanov’s few students and theoretical inheritors — such as Dmitri Rabounski and Larissa Borissova — have thereby preserved and extended his scientific and philosophical ideals as a whole, comprehensive, unitive scientific legacy: a singular univocity — “ZelmanovianUniversum”— in the form of an ideologicallymost unique and versatile platform for the most singular kind of meta-science and scientific creation, which is the embryo of the present Zelmanov Cosmological Group. In the background of such unique origination, the general fundamental physics journal Progress in Physics, with a substantial portion of publications in General Relativity and differential geometry — in common with The Abraham Zelmanov Journal, is dedicated mostly to original, profound, critical, and challenging scientific works that potentially engage with the overall, far-reaching horizons and verizons of theoretical and experimental physics, mathematics, astronomy/cosmology, and of science as a whole, thereby expanding and synthesizing new scientific landscapes for both the present and the future. This is done mostly by identifying the pertinent objective quality and originality of the idea(s) in a submitted scientific work and the first and foremost crucial identification of the author as an essentially independent creative mind (whether specifically affiliated or not) and as a true person of integrity and clarity, therefore isolating the process of scientific judgement infinitely and decisively from the pervasively corruption-mongering, business-minded, pseudoscientific (so, pseudo-objective) politics of typical modern academic practice and science administration (i.e., “big-wig scientism”). In specific cases where the editors and expert peer reviewers (who dare be non-anonymous) do not agree with the ideology and content of a submitted paper, a fidelity to pure scientific-intellectual freedom is still maintained as much as possible in the publication of the said work, as long as the basic technicality and competence (such as the mathematics and logical reasoning) is fulfilled. This is also true for some tremendous-looking extremely short papers that can subtly serve as an impetus for reflection and future scientific inspiration: they can be so short and still publishable in view of inspiring some pertinent new ideas in the future. A Survey of Personality Computing

Personality is a psychological construct aimed at explaining the wide variety of human behaviors in terms of a few, stable and measurable individual characteristics. In this respect, any technology involving understanding, prediction and synthesis of human behavior is likely to benefit from Personality Computing approaches, i.e. from technologies capable of dealing with human personality. This paper is a survey of such technologies and it aims at providing not only a solid knowledge base about the state-of-the-art, but also a conceptual model underlying the three main problems addressed in the literature, namely Automatic Personality Recognition (inference of the true personality of an individual from behavioral evidence), Automatic Personality Perception (inference of personality others attribute to an individual based on her observable behavior) and Automatic Personality Synthesis (generation of artificial personalities via embodied agents). Furthermore, the article highlights the issues still open in the field and identifies potential application areas.

Saddlepoint Approximations of the Distribution of the Person Parameter in the Two Parameter Logistic Model

Large sample theory states the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator of the person parameter in the two parameter logistic (2PL) model. In short tests, however, the assumption of normality can be grossly wrong. As a consequence, intended coverage rates may be exceeded and confidence intervals are revealed to be overly conservative. Methods belonging to the higher-order-theory, more specifically saddlepoint approximations, are a convenient way to deal with small-sample problems. Confidence bounds obtained by these means hold the approximate confidence level for a broad range of the person parameter. Moreover, an approximation to the exact distribution permits to compute median unbiased estimates (MUE) that are as likely to overestimate as to underestimate the true person parameter. Additionally, in small samples, these MUE are less mean-biased than the often-used maximum likelihood estimator.

An Exploratory Study Into the Relationship Between Personality and Student Leadership

This study explores the relationship between personality as measured by the True Colors Word Sort and student leadership as measured by the Student Leadership Practices Inventory© (SLPI). By understanding personality, an instructor can open lines of communication with all students, thus helping the students to direct their focus on the tasks at hand. if students understand their behavior and the behavior of their peers, they will be able to increase their performance level within a group or within the classroom. Research studies have reported True Colors™ personality types and SLPI data for hospitality management students; however, no research has been conducted to compare the two. The link between personality and leadership is contentious, with some researchers stating a definitive link between the two and other authors stating no link between the two components. Results of data analysis suggest that the Green True Colors personality trait influences one component of the leadership profile. Recommendations for teaching leadership using personality types and for additional research are made.

Rapid translation of circulating tumor cell biomarkers into clinical practice: technology development, clinical needs and regulatory requirements

The great hope in circulating tumor cell (CTC) research lies in the use of these rare cells as an accessible "fluid biopsy" that would permit frequent, minimally invasive sampling of tumor cells for similar molecular assays that are performed on traditional biopsies. Given the rarity of CTCs in peripheral circulation, microscale methods show great promise and superiority to capture and analyze these cells from patients with solid tumors. Novel technologies that produce validated CTC biomarkers may finally provide medical oncologists the tools needed to provide precise, personalized medical care for patients with advanced cancer. However, few CTC technologies demonstrate both experimental and clinical evidence of an accurate, reliable and reproducible assay that also meets the regulatory requirements to enter routine clinical practice. Many opportunities exist to incorporate clinical needs and regulatory benchmarks into technology development to more quickly garner FDA approval to direct decisions on patient care. This review will address: 1) device development tailored to address predictive, prognostic and/or therapeutic needs across the multitude of malignancies and disease stages; 2) validation benchmarks for clinical assay development; 3) early establishment of standard operating procedures for sample acquisition and analysis; 4) demonstration of clinical utility; 5) clinical qualification of a novel biomarker; and 6) integration of a newly validated and qualified technology into routine clinical practice. Early understanding and incorporation of these regulatory requirements into assay development can simplify and speed the integration of these novel technologies into patient care. Meeting these benchmarks will lead to the true personalization of cancer therapies, directing initial and subsequent treatments for each individual based on initial tumor characteristics while monitoring for emerging mechanisms of resistance in these continually evolving tumors.

A Comparative Study of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales & Attar’s The Conference of the Birds

Two major works of literature, Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and Attar’s The Conference of the Birds , display a number of strikingly similarities, in addition to a number of prominent differences. This paper tries to shed light on similarities and differences between these two works; therefore, the story direction, narrative techniques, characterization techniques, and settings of both works are compared. The results shows that both authors used figurative pilgrimage or journey as the mean for self knowledge, both works are the collections of stories that all fit in a larger story and characters present their true personalities through their speeches and their clothes or appearances; Meanwhile The ideas which each author attempts to impart to his readers differ greatly from each other. Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales shows the Roman Catholic influences in England society, while Attar’s book is influenced by Islamic and Sufism values and principles of his period.

Can Caregiver Singing Improve Person Transfer Situations in Dementia Care?

Everyday person transfer situations involving persons with dementia and their caregivers can be reciprocally problematic. Group interviews with professional caregivers were conducted, focusing on the caregivers’ experiences of singing during person transfer situations with residents with dementia, and a qualitative content analysis was performed. The caregivers expressed that compared to everyday transfer situations without singing, there were obvious differences during singing. When the caregiver sang, communication was mutually enhanced between the caregivers and the residents. Caregivers reported that residents seemed to show their true personalities, were able to move more fluidly and easily, seemed to better understand what was going on, and reacted with a spirited cheerfulness. The caregivers experienced themselves as more competent in and motivated to provide care in addition to positive emotions and moods. Caregiver singing during transfer situations may be one of several suitable nonpharmacological interventions that can be utilized when caregivers need to assist persons with dementia in transfer.

Artificial Neural Network for Human Behavior Prediction through Handwriting Analysis

Handwriting Analysis or Graphology is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating and understanding personality through the strokes and patterns revealed by handwriting. Handwriting reveals the true personality including emotional outlay, fears, honesty, defenses and many others. Professional handwriting examiners called graphologist often identify the writer with a piece of handwriting. Accuracy of handwriting analysis depends on how skilled the analyst is. Although human intervention in handwriting analysis has been effective, it is costly and prone to fatigue. Hence the proposed methodology focuses on developing a tool for behavioral analysis which can predict the personality traits automatically with the aid of a computer without the human intervention. In this paper a method has been proposed to predict the personality of a person from the baseline, the pen pressure and the letter„t‟ as found in an individual‘s handwriting. These parameters are the inputs to the Artificial Neural Network which outputs the personality trait of the writer. The performance is measured by examining multiple samples.
