True grit: a microwear experiment.

Recently we noted the effects of experimental diets on microscopic dental wear in the American opossum and concluded that it might prove difficult to distinguish the microwear produced by an insectivorous diet from that produced by some kinds of herbivorous ones. We also noted that wear caused by gritty diets and those containing plant opal, although they might be confused with one another, are easily distinguished from other sorts of dietary wear. Our conclusions have been challenged on the basis that possibly we did not allow sufficient time in the experiments for diagnostic wear patterns to emerge. Additional data reported here show that this is not so. Even in our "control" animals, fed a relatively soft unabrasive diet, enough time elapsed to produce significant dental wear. A new technique is described which for the first time allows the study of changing patterns of microscopic wear in a living animal over a period of time, thus allowing each animal to serve as its own control. A solution containing a broad-spectrum proteolytic enzyme when applied to the teeth of an anesthetized animal removes the proteinaceous coat (pellicle) which will otherwise obscure wear scratches. Precision dental impressions can then be made which reveal the details of the pattern of microwear on the teeth.

Urology: A View Through the Retrospectroscope.

We are lucky to have people like Dr. Herman who share their hobbies. This bright little book is very readable, the subtitle and an uninviting first sentence notwithstanding. It should appeal to anyone interested in medicine, especially those who prefer history in small doses. Dr. Herman offers a selective review and a descriptive bibliography. He is a self-effacing guide and sets the past directly before us with excerpts from the writings of old masters and numerous illustrations. The most striking attraction of the book is the clarity of the reproductions: there are no blurred images, every detail is visible. Allowed to fend for itself, the material wins admiration for the ingenuity of our forebears and the true grit of their patients. It sometimes startles with a small, pleasant shock. The Effect of Grit upon the Stress and Strain Properties of a Carbon Black Stock

Abstract Numerous papers have appeared from time to time dealing with the detection of grit in rubber pigments, in practically all of which it has been tacitly assumed that grit seriously impairs the quality of the pigment. Rubber articles, especially tire treads, made with pigments containing even small proportions of gritty material are considered inferior, and specifications covering grit are usually quite rigid. Pigment manufacturers have gone to great lengths to produce grit-free pigments, and the resulting product undoubtedly justifies the additional manufacturing care exercised. The importance of differentiating between actual grit and agglomerates of pigment particles which are subsequently dispersed during mixing operations has been pointed out by Murphy (Trans. Inst. Rubber Industry, 2, 100 (1926)), and various methods of accurately determining true grit have been suggested by this same author, by Gallie and Porritt (Trans. Inst. Rubber Industry, 2, 116 (1926)); by Esch (GummiZtg., 41, 82 (1926)), by Evers (Kautschuk, 1927, 70) and by others. The difficulty with which carbon black may be elutriated has limited the employment of such an agency in determining the proportion of grit present in it, and the laboratory has been confined to the use of screens of various size apertures for this purpose.
