Impact of Precipitation on Ocean Responses during a Tropical Cyclone

Abstract Precipitation plays a crucial role in modulating upper-ocean salinity and the formation of the barrier layer, which affects the development of tropical cyclones (TCs). This study performed idealized simulations to investigate the influence of precipitation on the upper ocean. Precipitation acts to suppress the wind-induced sea surface reduction and generates an asymmetric warming response with a rightward bias. There is substantial vertical change with a cooling anomaly in the subsurface, which is about 3 times larger than the surface warming. The mean tropical cyclone heat potential is locally increased, but the net effect across the cyclone footprint is small. The impact of precipitation on the ocean tends to saturate for extreme precipitation, suggesting a nonlinear feedback. A prevailing driver of the model behavior is that the freshwater flux from precipitation strengthens the stratification and increases current shear in the upper ocean, trapping more kinetic energy in the surface layer and subsequently weakening near-inertial waves in the deep ocean. This study highlights the competing roles of TC precipitation and wind. Because the TC category is weaker than category 3, the warming anomaly is caused by reduced vertical mixing, whereas for stronger storms, the advection process is most important.

Comparing the atmospheric and ocean characteristics associated with two distinctly intensified pre‐monsoon tropical cyclones over the Bay of Bengal

AbstractTropical cyclone (TC) Amphan is analyzed in terms of the various factors that governed the intensification process associated with it and compared with Fani. Furthermore, the TC radial characteristics and ocean productivity are examined. Notably, both TCs formed in the Bay of Bengal during the pre‐monsoon seasons of 2020 and 2019, respectively. For this study, both ocean and atmospheric parameters from various sources including global analyses, satellite observations, and outputs from Model for Prediction Across Scales‐Atmosphere (MPAS‐A) and Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF‐ARW), are considered. The results indicate a gradual decrease in vertical wind shear during Fani. In the case of Amphan, the increase in mid‐tropospheric relative humidity values is found to be substantial. The sea surface cooling after the passage of Amphan was higher than in the case of Fani. The higher sea surface temperature in the Amphan case corresponds to the lower aerosol loading (partly because of lockdown measures) than that of Fani in the pre‐cyclone phase. And the decrease (increase) in aerosol loading coincides with an increase (decrease) in the direct radiative forcing at the ocean surface. The Madden–Julian Oscillation played a greater role in the cyclogenesis of Fani, but Kelvin waves offered a major support in the case of Amphan. The warmer sea surface, higher tropical cyclone heat potential, and conducive ocean and atmospheric setting together supported the further intensification of Amphan to the supercyclone stage. The difference in chlorophyll concentration showed a significant variation, with higher positive values seen in the case of Amphan implicating greater vertical mixing. The numerical modeling effort indicated superior performance of MPAS‐A compared to WRF‐ARW in simulating the radial parameters of the TCs.

Influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on the Rapid Intensification Magnitude of Tropical Cyclones over the Western North Pacific

Abstract Rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TCs), which refers to an explosive increase of TC intensity exceeding a certain threshold [e.g., 30 kt (1 kt ≈ 0.51 m s−1) in 24 h] within a short time period, poses a great challenge to both forecasting and disaster prevention efforts. Recent studies have documented a significant increase in the magnitude of TC RI (RIM; measured as the mean intensification rate of all TC RI records in a TC season) over the western North Pacific (WNP) since 1979, and have attributed it to the impacts of global warming. In this study, results from statistical analyses show that the TC RIM over the WNP during 1951–2021 exhibits significant interdecadal variability, which is found to be closely related to the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). Further analyses indicate that the response of the local thermodynamic conditions to the AMO plays a dominant role in shaping this relationship. The positive AMO phase fosters a high TC RIM over the WNP by producing significant warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, which in turn enhances TC heat potential and the midtropospheric relative humidity in the main region of TC RI occurrence. Results from both data analyses and numerical model experiments demonstrate that the AMO modulates thermodynamic conditions over the WNP, such as SST and ocean heat content, by affecting local heat fluxes and the Ekman heat transport in the WNP via the modulation of Walker circulation from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Changes in ENSO Modulation of the Distribution of Rapidly Intensifying Tropical Cyclones over the Western North Pacific in Boreal Autumn

Abstract This work explores the modulation of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) on the relationship between the occurrence position of rapid intensification (RI) events of tropical cyclones (TCs) over the western North Pacific (WNP) in boreal autumn and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). From the warm to cold phase of the PDO, the occurrence position of WNP RI events experiences a significant westward shift of 5.5° in El Niño years and a significant northward shift of 4.5° in La Niña years. The strengthening of thermodynamic conditions west of 160°N plays a dominant role in the westward shift of RI events in El Niño years, and the northward shift in La Niña years is associated with the expansion of areas with warm sea surface temperature, high tropical cyclone heat potential and midlevel relative humidity, strengthening of relative vorticity north of 20°N, and weakening of dynamic conditions within 10°–20°N. During the PDO cold phase, the descending branch of the Walker circulation over the western Pacific is weak and shifts west of 140°E in El Niño years, whereas it is much stronger in La Niña years. In addition, the Hadley circulation over the WNP shows little change during El Niño, but the ascending branch around 10°N expands to 20°N during La Niña. These trends reflect the changing responses of the WNP environment to ENSO variation and are consistent with the changing distribution of WNP RI events. Moreover, during the PDO cold phases, SST over the north Indian Ocean is much warmer, and anomalous anticyclonic circulation occurs in the WNP in boreal spring (summer and autumn) during the developing phase of El Niño (La Niña) years, which may also contribute to strengthening the thermodynamic conditions over the WNP.

Changes in the thermodynamical profiles of the subsurface ocean and atmosphere induce cyclones to congregate over the Eastern Arabian Sea

The Arabian Sea accounts for a small fraction of Tropical Cyclones—about 2% of the annual global mean. However, the damage they might inflict there and along its coastlines, which are thickly populated, is considerable. This study explores the influence of the changes in the vertical profiles of atmosphere and oceanic environment throughout the seasons of March–June (MAMJ) and October–December (OND) in clustering the cyclogenesis over the Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) next to the Indian West coast in recent decades. Further investigation has been done into the precise contribution of atmospheric and oceanic factors to fluctuations in cyclone intensity throughout the MAMJ and OND seasons separately. Two seasons have been studied independently in order to better understand the distinct influences of the vertical fluctuation of atmospheric factors and the thermal structure of the oceanic subsurface on cyclogenesis. More severe cyclones are caused by high tropical cyclone heat potential, and ocean subsurface warming present in this sea region influences the genesis of storms mostly during MAMJ. On the other hand, mid tropospheric relative humidity and thermal instability influences more on increasing cyclogenesis and its clustering over EAS during OND season. The findings suggest that large-scale oceanic subsurface conditions have a crucial influence on cyclogenesis over EAS through oceanic sensitivity to atmospheric forcing. This cyclone tendency and its clustering over EAS needs attention in terms of forecasting, catastrophe risk reduction, and climate change adaptation due to the security of coastal urban and rural habitats, livelihoods, and essential infrastructure along the coasts.

A pathway for multi-stage cyclone-induced hazard tracking—case study for Yaas

A Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ developed over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) on 23 May 2021 and crossed over the Odisha coast on 26 May with maximum sustained wind speed of 75 kts. Herein, a pathway has been developed and exemplified for ‘Yaas’ through three-stage cyclone-induced hazard tracking. Days before the cyclone formation, cyclone genesis potential parameter, sea surface temperature (SST) (> 30 °C) and tropical cyclone heat potential (anomaly of 40–80 kJ/cm2) indicated a strong possibility of cyclogenesis in the BoB. A Lagrangian advection model used for its track prediction with 24-h lead-time provided an accuracy of ~ 19 km and ~ 6 h in its landfall location and time. Further, intensity prediction was done using numerical weather prediction model. Geostationary satellites, INSAT-3D/3DR, were used to visualize cyclone structure. Passing of cyclone had its reverbarations in oceans, which are observed in SST drop of ~ 3 °C, salinity and density increase by ~ 1 psu and ~ 2 kg/m3, respectively. During the period, 23–26 May 2021, the Ekman suction velocity and chlorophyll concentration were found significantly high at ~ 5 m/day and > 0.5 mg/m3, respectively. Forecast of storm surge was found to be between 3.5 and 4 m at coastal locations. Significant wave height was found to be 5.5–9.2 m. The coastal inundation forecast for 24 May 2021 provided its quantitative maximum inland extent. Finally, loss of the crop, fishery and forest areas by strong winds and inundation/ingress of saline water associated with storm surge were examined using SAR and optical data.

Effects of Anticyclonic Eddies on the Unique Tropical Storm Deliwe (2014) in the Mozambique Channel

The unique tropical storm (TS) Deliwe (2014) occurred in the northern Mozambique Channel on 17 January 2014 and turned right during its whole life cycle, moving south along the west coast of Madagascar Island. During the development of the TS, the anticyclonic eddies in the Mozambique Channel had an important influence on the intensity and track of Deliwe, which existed for months. In this study, multisource reanalysis, conductivity temperature depth (CTD) and Argo buoy data were used to investigate the mechanism of dynamics. The results showed that the anticyclonic eddies in the Mozambique Channel were a major cause of Deliwe strengthening, weakening and then deflection to the right. On 17 January, the maximum latent heat flux of anticyclonic eddy W1 reached 103.1 w/m2. After Deliwe passed, the tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) of anticyclonic eddy W1 was significantly reduced by 3 kJ/cm2. The mixed layer of anticyclonic eddy W1 was deeper than the surrounding waters, supporting the development of Deliwe. As the TS intensity decreased, the low-pressure center of 500 hPa moved above anticyclonic eddy W2, and the westerly wind belt moved northward to form a westerly trough of low pressure, which caused the TS to keep turning right and formed a unique TS track. This study provides a new understanding of the influence of marine anticyclonic eddies on the development of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the Mozambique channel.

Investigating Physics Behind the Rapid Intensification and Catastrophic Landfall of Cyclone ‘Titli’ (2018) in the Bay of Bengal

The present study delineates the role of ocean conditions in the genesis and rapid intensification (RI) of a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS) ‘Titli’ (2018). The tropical cyclone (TC) formed over the warm waters of the east-central Bay of Bengal during 08-13 October 2018. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone was the most damaging storm to hit any coast of India in the year 2018, making it a special case of analysis. In the present study, 10 m winds , Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Latent heat flux, and relative vorticity (RV) during the lifespan of the cyclone are studied using ECMWF reanalysis V5 (ERA5) prepared by European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Further, the Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential (TCHP) data generated by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad is used to study the important information about the oceanic conditions of the TC. The investigation of the TC’s sea surface temperature data from satellites reveals that a relatively warmer SST prevailed during the cyclone’s occurrence, which may have been the primary factor in the TC’s rapid intensification. Further, the latent Heat flux (LHF) and TCHP values were also found high in conjunction with SST values. Our in-depth analysis reveals that the 10 m winds embedded into the TC were extremely strong, exceeding 12 m/s prior to the landfall. A positive and large value of RV was found when the TC was about to hit the coast. This may be one of the reasons behind the ‘catastrophic landfall’ of the cyclone.

The intensification of consecutive three tropical cyclones passing over a warm ocean eddy in the South China Sea

An extremely strong and long-lasting (more than 8 months) oceanic warm core eddy existed in the South China Sea (SCS) from February–October 2010. From July–August 2010, three tropical cyclones (TCs; TC Conson, Chanthu, and Mindulle) consecutively passed over this eddy and sustained at least 21 h. The intensity change of all three TCs reached 20 kt within 24 h when they encountered this eddy. In mid-late July, tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) is overall stronger in the eddy region than in its surrounding region, thus TCHP plays an important role in the intensification of TC Conson and Chanthu. It is also found that the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and the quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO) can be important in favor of the further enhancement of TCs. The TCHP is too low to favor the intensity increase of TC Mindulle in late August, 2010, but weak vertical wind shear, ISO and QBWO act as key roles in the intensification of TC Mindulle.

Marine heat waves and tropical cyclones - Two devastating types of coastal hazard in South-eastern Africa

The coast of southeastern Africa is the only part of the continent to experience landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs), the most destructive and hazardous of weather systems. It is also a region which frequently experiences long-lasting marine heat waves (MHWs). Three coastal regions in southeastern Africa with high biodiversity and relatively large populations dependent on local coral reefs and artisanal fishing are analysed in terms of the characteristics of TCs and MHWs. Significantly increasing trends in MHW duration and frequency, TC heat potential and coral bleaching events are found during austral summer in all three coastal areas, with northeastern Madagascar experiencing the highest rate. The co-occurrence of TCs and MHWs in each region is also considered using a parameter-space plot of MHW intensity versus TC wind speed. A high percentage of pre-existing MHWs help strengthen TCs as they pass over the MHW region but an even higher percentage of the TCs tend to weaken or end MHWs after they both co-occur. Of the three coastal zones considered, northeastern Madagascar is more prone to landfalling severe cyclones and long-lasting MHWs. It is suggested that as the TC approaches the MHW region, the rapid increase in surface wind friction velocity, intense heat loss to the atmosphere and entrainment cooling are all important processes that determine the rate at which the MHW weakens towards its demise. TC-MHWs co-occurring together may be considered a compound extreme event. The magnitude of their impacts on the southeast African coast in recent decades highlights the need for increased monitoring and improved real-time forecasting of these devastating coastal hazards.

Recent decrease in western North Pacific tropical cyclone rapid intensification during June

AbstractThis study investigates the long‐term tendency in the ratio of rapid intensification (RI) cases to the total number of tropical cyclone cases over the western North Pacific (WNP) during June between 1982 and 2021. There is a significant decreasing trend in RI ratio during June, which is opposite to the increasing trend in RI ratio during July–November. From 1982–2005 to 2006–2021, the June RI ratio significantly decreases over the region of 5°–20°N and 120°–150°N, while showing weak changes over other parts of the WNP. Over the region with a significant RI ratio reduction, significantly reduced 850‐hPa relative vorticity and 200‐hPa divergence and significantly enhanced 850 to 200‐hPa vertical wind shear are the likely primary drivers. The RI‐suppressing effect of the above changes in dynamical variables exceeds the RI‐favoring effect of the warming ocean, for example, significantly increased sea surface temperature and tropical cyclone heat potential, over this same region. Moreover, the changes in dynamic conditions can be related to an anomalous low‐level anticyclonic circulation, anomalous upper‐level convergent flow and a greater enhancement of upper‐level easterlies than lower‐level easterlies. Our study highlights the importance of changes in dynamic variables (e.g., vertical wind shear) in modulating WNP RI activity.

Influence of the ocean on tropical cyclone intensity using a high resolution coupled atmosphere–ocean model: A case study of very severe cyclonic storm Ockhi over the North Indian Ocean

AbstractA very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS), Ockhi was conceived in the Bay of Bengal and moved over the Arabian Sea undergoing rapid intensification (RI) in the early stages of its life cycle. Ockhi is simulated using the high‐resolution coupled Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model and the Hurricane Weather Research Forecast model. The study suggests that sea surface temperature warmer than the seasonal climatological mean with the availability of a large tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) has acted as a potential cause for RI when the TC moved over that region. We have conducted experiments with (CP) and without (UCP) ocean coupling. The predicted tracks of UCP and CP experiments agree well with the India Meteorological Department's best track data. However, CP showed a significant improvement in intensity prediction with 61 and 19% for mean sea level pressure and maximum sustained surface wind at 10 m respectively in comparison to UCP. The presence of thermal and haline stratification in the subsurface affects surface cooling. The subsurface turbulent heat flux calculated for the high‐TCHP region under the TC suggests that the upward transport of heat, which increases the enthalpy flux, becomes necessary to bring about RI. The primary circulation, secondary circulation, inflow, thermal structure, moisture distribution and mass flux within the TC environment during the 24‐hr RI period are analyzed to investigate the evolution of TC characteristics for both UCP and CP experiments. The analyses suggest that the UCP experiments show higher values of intensity as compared to CP experiments. Further, a more organized evolution of updrafts is present in the CP simulation, maybe due to the formation of a stable boundary layer. The study shows the significant influence of coupling on surface enthalpy controlling boundary layer characteristics and thus ultimately producing a more organized TC.

Interactions Between a Marine Heatwave and Tropical Cyclone Amphan in the Bay of Bengal in 2020

Interactions are diagnosed between a marine heatwave (MHW) event and tropical super cyclone Amphan in the Bay of Bengal. In May 2020, an MHW developed in the Bay of Bengal driven by coupled ocean-atmosphere processes which included shoaling of the mixed layer depth due to reduced wind speed, increased net surface shortwave radiation flux into the ocean, increased upper ocean stratification, and increased sub-surface warming. Ocean temperature, rather than salinity, dominated the stratification that contributed to the MHW development and the subsurface ocean warming that also increased tropical cyclone heat potential. The presence of this strong MHW with sea surface temperature anomalies >2.5°C in the western Bay of Bengal coincided with the cyclone track and facilitated the rapid intensification of tropical cyclone Amphan to a super cyclone in just 24 h. This rapid intensification of a short-lived tropical cyclone, with a lifespan of 5 days over the ocean, is unprecedented in the Bay of Bengal during the pre-monsoon period (March-May). As the cyclone approached landfall in northern India, the wind-induced mixing deepened the mixed layer, cooled the ocean's surface, and reduced sub-surface warming in the bay, resulting in the demise of the MHW. This study provides new perspectives on the interactions between MHWs and tropical cyclones that could aid in improving the current understanding of compound extreme events that have severe socio-economic consequences in affected countries.

Does the Antarctic Oscillation modulate tropical cyclone rapid intensification over the western North Pacific?

This study investigates the modulation of tropical cyclone (TCs) rapid intensification (RI) over the western North Pacific by the Antarctic Oscillation. There is a significant inverse relationship between basinwide RI number during July–November from 1982 to 2020 and the simultaneous Antarctic Oscillation index. During positive Antarctic Oscillation years, RI occurrence is significantly suppressed over the main RI region (10°–20° N and 125°–150° E) and slightly enhanced over the South China Sea. By contrast, during negative Antarctic Oscillation years, RI is significantly enhanced over the main RI region and slightly suppressed over the South China Sea. The Antarctic Oscillation influences western North Pacific RI occurrence mainly through modulation of the large-scale dynamic environment. During positive Antarctic Oscillation years, increases in 850–200 hPa vertical wind shear and decreases in both low-level vorticity and upper-level divergence all suppress RI occurrence over the main RI region, while thermodynamic variables (e.g. TC heat potential, maximum potential intensity and low-to-middle level relative humidity) show mostly weak changes. These changes in dynamic factors can be linked to a low-level anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone triggered by the positive phase of the Antarctic Oscillation and a low-level anomalous western North Pacific cyclone generated by a negative phase of the Antarctic Oscillation.

What Made the Sustained Intensification of Tropical Cyclone Fani in the Bay of Bengal? An Investigation Using Coupled Atmosphere–Ocean Model

The extremely severe tropical cyclone Fani (25 April–5 May 2019) unusually sustained high intensity for a prolonged duration over the Bay of Bengal (BoB). A regional coupled atmosphere–ocean model was used to investigate the atmospheric and oceanic conditions and processes responsible for the sustained intensification of the tropical cyclone (TC) Fani. The coupled model simulated the track and intensification/weakening stages of the cyclone reasonably well. A reduction in sea surface temperature (by −2 °C) and an increase in sea surface salinity due to cyclone-induced upwelling and inertial mixing was noticed in both observations and model. The passage of TC Fani over two geostrophic mesoscale warm-core eddies along the cyclone track was found to supply the necessary energy for the intensification of TC Fani. The sea surface height anomaly and tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) were higher during TC Fani than other pre-monsoon cyclones in the BoB. The anomalous TCHP in the warm-core eddy zones (i.e., in excess of >160 kJ cm−2) maintained the warm surface temperature and high air–sea heat fluxes. The air–sea latent heat flux and atmospheric wind shear were favourable for the intensification of the cyclone. The atmospheric moist static energy enhanced up to 360 kJ kg−1 with a deep vertical extension in the atmospheric column supporting the further intensification of TC Fani. Therefore, the unusual oceanic TCHP associated with mesoscale eddies, higher latent heat flux, and enhanced moist static energy in the atmosphere contributed to the sustained intensification of TC Fani for a prolonged period in the BoB.

A spatial model for predicting North Indian Ocean tropical cyclone intensity: Role of sea surface temperature and tropical cyclone heat potential

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are extreme weather events that may result in enormous loss of life and property especially for countries surrounding the North Indian Ocean (NIO) rim. In this study, a regional scale spatial statistical model has been developed to define the relationship between TCs and sea surface temperature (SST)/tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) for the period 1979 to 2017 over the NIO region. The spatial model employed here tessellates the NIO basin with hexagonal grids (area of each hexagon is approximately 213,961 km2) in order to analyze the relationship between cyclone intensity and the two predictors-SST and TCHP. The role of SST and TCHP contribution to the NIO cyclone intensity is determined by using a geographically weighted regression (GWR) method. This study postulates that a hexagon with positive coefficient signifies a direct relationship between the cyclone intensity and the predictors, for example, between SST (TCHP) and the Bay of Bengal (Arabian Sea) TCs. Based on robust model verification and test of significance, it is attributed that the spatial model using GWR has the potential to model NIO cyclone intensity, particularly using SST as the predictor for Bay of Bengal and TCHP for the Arabian Sea.

Growing Threat of Rapidly-Intensifying Tropical Cyclones in East Asia

This study examines the long-term change in the threat of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in East Asia over the period 1975–2020 with a focus on rapidly intensifying (RI) TCs. The increase in the annual number of RI-TCs over the western North Pacific and the northwestward shift of their genesis location lead to an increasing trend in the annual number of landfalling RI-TCs along the coast of East Asia. The annual power dissipation index (PDI), a measure of the destructive potential of RI-TCs at landfall, also shows a significant increasing trend due to increases in the annual frequency and mean landfall intensity of landfalling RI-TCs. The increase in mean landfall intensity is related to a higher lifetime maximum intensity (LMI) and the LMI location of the landfalling RI-TCs being closer to the coast. The increase in the annual PDI of East Asia is mainly associated with landfalling TCs in the southern (the Philippines, South China, and Vietnam) and northern parts (Japan and the Korean Peninsula) of East Asia due to long-term changes in vertical wind shear and TC heat potential. The former leads to a northwestward shift of favorable environments for TC genesis and intensification, resulting in the northwestward shift in the genesis, RI, and LMI locations of RI-TCs. The latter provides more heat energy from the ocean for TC intensification, increasing its chances to undergo RI.

Trends in Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change Before Landfall

This study investigates the long-term trend in the average 24-h intensity change (ΔV24) of western North Pacific (WNP) tropical cyclones (TCs) before landfall during June-November for the period from 1970–2019. We find a significant increasing trend in basin-averaged ΔV24 during 1970–2019. The increase in ΔV24 is significant over the northern South China Sea (17.5°-25°N, 107.5°-120°E) and to the east of the Philippines (7.5°-15°N, 122.5°-132.5°E), implying a slower weakening rate before landfall for the South China Sea and an increased intensification rate before landfall for the region east of the Philippines. We find a significant linkage between changes in ΔV24 and several large-scale environmental conditions. The increased ΔV24 before landfall in the above two regions is induced by a warmer ocean (e.g., higher sea surface temperatures, maximum potential intensity and TC heat potential) and greater upper-level divergence, with a moister mid-level atmosphere also aiding the ΔV24 increase east of the Philippines. Our study highlights an increasing tendency of ΔV24 before landfall, consistent with trends in ΔV24 over water and over land as found in previous publications.

Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential (TCHP) from the NCMRWF NEMO based global ocean analysis and forecast system

In this study, the Nucleus European Modelling of Ocean (NEMO) based global ocean analysis and forecast system configured at National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMWRF) is used to compute the upper ocean heat content up to 26° isotherm depth called as Tropical Cyclone Heat Potential (TCHP). NCMRWF has the real-time TCHP monitoring capability on daily basis. It is produced in real time using the global ocean forecast system up to 10 days using the ocean only model and up to 15 days using the coupled atmosphere-ocean model for monitoring the upper ocean and also for research purpose mainly for Tropical Cyclone (TC) study. Four pre-monsoon TCs with category above cyclonic storms in which two from Arabian Sea and two from Bay of Bengal are also examined. The Sea Surface Temperature drop is much more over the regions where the surface wind stress anomaly is strong. In both regions, various small scale warm and cold eddies are observed during TCs. TCHP anomaly is positive/negative over the region where Sea Surface Height (SSH) anomaly is positive/negative. From TCHP, it is manifest that the magnitude of TCHP anomaly is higher in BoB than AS region during TCs.
