One out of 14 legume effective Rhizobium strains (R. trifolii, ZIMET 43726) stimulated the youth development of cereals in pot trials and grain yield in several field trials. This R. trifolii strain had no measurable nitrogenase activity in pure culture. In combination with other soil microorganisms and carboxymethylcellulose or straw respectively as C-source, nitrogenase activity increased markedly over the activity level of the soil microorganisms alone. Seed inoculation together with organic material is suitable to Rhizobium survival on the seeds and in the rhizosphere.
