The number of journalism study programmes in Australia has grown rapidly during the 1970’s and the new programmes are quite unlike their predecessors which had emerged in the 1920’s, then faded. These new programmes are more skills-oriented than earlier ones andf in general, are located in colleges of advanced education or institutes of technology rather than in universities. Educators and media professionals share questions about how well the new programmes will perform in comparison with Australia’s traditional cadetship training system.
