Increasing SAR Imaging Precision for Burden Surface Profile Jointly Using Low-Rank and Sparsity Priors

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging technique for a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) has attracted wide attention in the field of burden surface profile measurement. However, the imaging data are virtually under-sampled due to the severely restricted scan time, which prevents the antenna being exposed to high temperatures and heavy dust in the blast furnace (BF) for an extended period. In traditional SAR imaging algorithm research, the insufficient accumulation of scattered energy in reconstructing the burden surface profile leads to lower imaging precision, and the harsh smelting increases the probability of distortion in shape detection. In this study, to address these challenges, a novel rotating SAR imaging algorithm based on the constructed mechanical swing radar system is proposed. This algorithm is inspired by the low-rank property of the sampled signal matrix and the sparsity of burden surface profile images. First, the sparse FMCW signal is modeled, and the position transform matrix, calculated according to the BF dimensions, is embedded into the dictionary matrix. Then, the low-rank and sparsity priors are considered and reformulated as split variables in order to establish a convex optimization problem. Lastly, the augmented Lagrange multiplier (ALM) is employed to solve this problem under double constraints, and the imaging results are obtained using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The experimental results demonstrate that, in the subsequent shape detection, the root mean square error (RMSE) is 15.38% lower than the previous algorithm and 15.63% lower under low signal-to-noise (SNR) conditions. In both enclosed and harsh environments, the proposed algorithm is able to achieve higher imaging precision even under high noise. It will be further optimized for speed and reliability, with plans to extend its application to 3D measurements in the future.

Parameter estimation of ground moving targets in synthetic aperture radar systems based on vortex echo data

Ground Moving Target Indication is a critical field within synthetic aperture radar (SAR) research, as traditional SAR images are defocused and displaced due to the target’s trajectory-direction velocity and radial velocity, respectively. Therefore, an accurate estimation of the target’s motion parameters is required. This study introduces a two-dimensional method for estimating target motion parameters using vortex SAR. It utilises the Bessel magnitude and spatial phase term from vortex echo data to calculate the pitch and azimuth angle, from which the motion parameters of ground slow-motion targets are derived. The proposed algorithm operates faster and has a lower computational cost than the traditional parameter estimation algorithm. Its efficacy was confirmed through simulation experiments and mean square error analysis of the estimated parameters.

A Novel Multimodal Fusion Framework Based on Point Cloud Registration for Near-Field 3D SAR Perception

This study introduces a pioneering multimodal fusion framework to enhance near-field 3D Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, crucial for applications like radar cross-section measurement and concealed object detection. Traditional near-field 3D SAR imaging struggles with issues like target–background confusion due to clutter and multipath interference, shape distortion from high sidelobes, and lack of color and texture information, all of which impede effective target recognition and scattering diagnosis. The proposed approach presents the first known application of multimodal fusion in near-field 3D SAR imaging, integrating LiDAR and optical camera data to overcome its inherent limitations. The framework comprises data preprocessing, point cloud registration, and data fusion, where registration between multi-sensor data is the core of effective integration. Recognizing the inadequacy of traditional registration methods in handling varying data formats, noise, and resolution differences, particularly between near-field 3D SAR and other sensors, this work introduces a novel three-stage registration process to effectively address these challenges. First, the approach designs a structure–intensity-constrained centroid distance detector, enabling key point extraction that reduces heterogeneity and accelerates the process. Second, a sample consensus initial alignment algorithm with SHOT features and geometric relationship constraints is proposed for enhanced coarse registration. Finally, the fine registration phase employs adaptive thresholding in the iterative closest point algorithm for precise and efficient data alignment. Both visual and quantitative analyses of measured data demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The experimental results show significant improvements in registration accuracy and efficiency, laying the groundwork for future multimodal fusion advancements in near-field 3D SAR imaging.

Studies on High-Resolution Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Formation with Pseudo-Random Agility of Interpulse Waveform Parameters

By means of alteration of the transmitted linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal waveform parameters, such as pulse width or chirp rate, initial phase, pulse repetition interval (PRI), and chirp rate polarity at every position of synthetic apertures, the pseudo-random agility technology of interpulse waveform parameters in airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) actively increases the complexity and uncertainty of radar waveforms. This technology confuses jamming interception receivers, thus improving its anti-interference ability for active coherent jamming, which is one of the main research interests of airborne SAR technology. But the pseudo-random agility technology for interpulse waveform parameters faces certain challenges of large computation and complex system design, which need to be further studied and solved. To address these issues, a processing scheme of high-resolution SAR image formation which is appropriate for agile interpulse waveform parameters is proposed in this paper. This method can deal with multiple agile parameters, not only single ones as in most existing literature. Its computation load is nearly comparable to that of traditional SAR image formation with constant waveform parameters. The high-resolution SAR imaging results obtained by processing SAR raw data with agile interpulse waveform parameters demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, real SAR images with resolutions of 0.5 m and 0.15 m, which are rarely found in the public literature, are shown under the circumstance of randomly changing the transmitted wideband LFM signal pulse parameters one by one.

Frequency Domain Imaging Algorithms for Short-Range Synthetic Aperture Radar

In order to achieve miniaturization, short-range radar (SRR) generally adopts millimeter-wave (MMW) radar with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) system, which may make the stop–go–stop assumption in traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging algorithms invalid. In addition, in order to observe a large enough area, SRR often needs a wide radar beam, which may cause serious range–azimuth coupling when using SRR for SAR imaging. The above two problems may make the traditional SAR imaging algorithm invalid in SRR SAR imaging. Taking the SRR SAR imaging application into account, traditional frequency domain SAR imaging algorithms are analyzed and improved in this paper. Firstly, the intra-pulse motion (IPM) caused by the FMCW system and the two-dimensional coupling (TDC) in the case of a wide beam are analyzed. Subsequently, the applicability of the range Doppler algorithm (RDA), the frequency scaling algorithm (FSA) and the range migration algorithm (RMA) for SRR SAR is analyzed. Then, improvement measures are put forward to address the aliasing and folding phenomena caused by the wide-beam problem in the FSA and RMA, respectively. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified using simulation data and real measured data collected using an MMW radar fixed on a slide rail.

Edge Preserved Low-Rank SAR Image Despeckling via Hierarchical Prior Knowledge Regulation

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image despeckling is a challenging task as speckle noise is spatially correlated and signal-dependent, and appears as a grainy texture superimposed on images. Although traditional low-rank SAR image despeckling methods have shown promising performance, they have the problem of producing over-smoothed images with blurred edges due to their low-rank characteristics. In this paper, we propose a novel edge preserved SAR despeckling method named EP-LRSID, which can keep rich edge details while reducing speckle noise. Specifically, EP-LRSID takes a fresh look at the low-rank model, i.e., we can obtain structural edge information from residuals which is viewed as noise and simply disregarded by the traditional low-rank methods. To obtain discriminative edge information from residuals, the edge subspace is obtained in a manifold framework by using a dynamic affinity graph regularization. Moreover, a new hierarchical prior knowledge regulation is designed to make different kinds of pixels processed hierarchically, especially the strong scattering points in SAR images. By introducing this prior knowledge, our low-rank model can obtain more confidential low-rank parts and edge parts, thus structural information including edges can be better preserved in this way. Extensive experiments on several real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that EP-LRSID can achieve the highest despeckling performance with edge preservation than other state-of-the-art despeckling algorithms.

A Survey of SAR Image Target Detection Based on Convolutional Neural Networks

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) target detection is a significant research direction in radar information processing. Aiming at the poor robustness and low detection accuracy of traditional detection algorithms, SAR image target detection based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is reviewed in this paper. Firstly, the traditional SAR image target detection algorithms are briefly discussed, and their limitations are pointed out. Secondly, the CNN’s network principle, basic structure, and development process in computer vision are introduced. Next, the SAR target detection based on CNN is emphatically analyzed, including some common data sets and image processing methods for SAR target detection. The research status of SAR image target detection based on CNN is summarized and compared in detail with traditional algorithms. Afterward, the challenges of SAR image target detection are discussed and future research is proposed. Finally, the whole article is summarized. By summarizing and analyzing prior research work, this paper is helpful for subsequent researchers to quickly recognize the current development status and identify the connections between various detection algorithms. Beyond that, this paper summarizes the problems and challenges confronting researchers in the future, and also points out the specific content of future research, which has certain guiding significance for promoting the progress of SAR image target detection.

Mountainous SAR Image Registration Using Image Simulation and an L2E Robust Estimator

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most widely utilized methods to extract elevation information and identify large-scale deformations in mountainous areas. Homologous points in stereo SAR image pairs are difficult to identify due to complex geometric and radiometric distortions. In this paper, a new approach for mountainous area images is suggested. Firstly, a simulated SAR image and a look-up table based on DEM data are generated by a range-Doppler model and an empirical formula. Then, a point matching RPM-L2E algorithm is used to match images obtained by the simulation and in real-time to indirectly obtain the feature points of the real SAR images. Finally, the accurate registration of mountainous areas in the SAR images is achieved by a polynomial transform. Experimental verification is performed by using the data of mountainous SAR images from the same sensor and different sensors. When the registration accuracy of the method is compared with that of two state-of-the-art image registration algorithms, better outcomes are experimentally shown. The suggested approach can effectively solve the registration problem of SAR images of mountainous areas, and can overcome the disadvantages of poor adaptability and low accuracy of traditional SAR image registration methods for mountainous areas.

Oriented Ship Detector for Remote Sensing Imagery Based on Pairwise Branch Detection Head and SAR Feature Enhancement

Recently, object detection in natural images has made a breakthrough, but it is still challenging in oriented ship detection for remote sensing imagery. Considering some limitations in this task, such as uncertain ship orientation, unspecific features for locating and classification in the complex optical environment, and multiplicative speckle interference of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), we propose an oriented ship detector based on the pairwise branch detection head and adaptive SAR feature enhancement. The details are as follows: (1) Firstly, the ships with arbitrary directions are described with a rotated ground truth, and an oriented region proposal network (ORPN) is designed to study the transformation from the horizontal region of interest to the rotated region of interest. The ORPN effectively improved the quality of the candidate area while only introducing a few parameters. (2) In view of the existing algorithms that tend to perform classification and regression prediction on the same output feature, this paper proposes a pairwise detection head (PBH) to design parallel branches to decouple classification and locating tasks, so that each branch can learn more task-specific features. (3) Inspired by the ratio-of-average detector in traditional SAR image processing, the SAR edge enhancement (SEE) module is proposed, which adaptively enhances edge pixels, and the threshold of the edge is learned by the channel-shared adaptive thresholds block. Experiments were carried out on both optical and SAR datasets. In the optical dataset, PBH combined with ORPN improved recall by 5.03%, and in the SAR dataset, the overall method achieved a maximum F1 score improvement of 6.07%; these results imply the validity of our method.

Super‐resolution forward‐looking imaging method for manoeuvering platform with optimised dictionary and extended sparsity adaptive matching pursuit

In forward-looking imaging, left-right Doppler is ambiguous and cross-range resolution is limited by real aperture, which result in traditional synthetic aperture radar imaging methods no longer applicable. Besides, the impact of three-dimensional acceleration on an over-complete dictionary matrix and sparse reconstruction kernel is not considered in conventional super-resolution forward-looking imaging methods. To solve these problems, a super-resolution forward-looking imaging method for manoeuvering platforms is proposed. First, the range walk caused by forward-looking geometry and higher-order phase introduced by three-dimensional acceleration are eliminated by compensating a pre-processing function. Subsequently, according to beam steering-based geometry and linear regression model, the over-complete dictionary matrix is optimised to more accurately describe the complicated forward-looking geometry with curved trajectory. Finally, sparsity adaptive matching pursuit kernel with an improved halting condition is adopted to reconstruct the forward-looking scene. The proposed method is supported by point target simulation and surface target simulation.

Efficient 3-D Near-Field MIMO-SAR Imaging for Irregular Scanning Geometries

In this article, we introduce a novel algorithm for efficient near-field synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging for irregular scanning geometries. With the emergence of fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave (mmWave) devices, near-field SAR imaging is no longer confined to laboratory environments. Recent advances in positioning technology have attracted significant interest for a diverse set of new applications in mmWave imaging. However, many use cases, such as automotive-mounted SAR imaging, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imaging, and freehand imaging with smartphones, are constrained to irregular scanning geometries. Whereas traditional near-field SAR imaging systems and quick personnel security (QPS) scanners employ highly precise motion controllers to create ideal synthetic arrays, emerging applications, mentioned previously, inherently cannot achieve such ideal positioning. In addition, many Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G applications impose strict size and computational complexity limitations that must be considered for edge mmWave imaging technology. In this study, we propose a novel algorithm to leverage the advantages of non-cooperative SAR scanning patterns, small form-factor multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars, and efficient monostatic planar image reconstruction algorithms. We propose a framework to mathematically decompose arbitrary and irregular sampling geometries and a joint solution to mitigate multistatic array imaging artifacts. The proposed algorithm is validated through simulations and an empirical study of arbitrary scanning scenarios. Our algorithm achieves high-resolution and high-efficiency near-field MIMO-SAR imaging, and is an elegant solution to computationally constrained irregularly sampled imaging problems.

UNet Combined With Attention Mechanism Method for Extracting Flood Submerged Range

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite has been widely applied in real-time flood monitoring as that they are not affected by extreme weather conditions. However, there is no automatic method to quickly and accurately extract flood areas with SAR satellite images. In this article, a UNet combined with the attention mechanism (UNet-CBAM) method has been proposed for extracting flood submerged areas, and both Longgan Lake and Dahuchi in Poyang Lake Basin are selected as the test sites. Based on the polarization characteristics of two Sentinel-1A data of Poyang Lake, both UNet and UNet-CBAM extraction methods are utilized to extract the flood areas, respectively. Compared with traditional SAR image water extraction methods, simulation results demonstrate that UNet can obtain more satisfactory results in recall, precision, and <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${F}_1$</tex-math></inline-formula> -parameter, but it has no capability to guarantee continuity in edges and small bodies of water. Moreover, our proposed UNet-CBAM method can further improve recall, precision, and <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${F}_1$</tex-math></inline-formula> -parameter, respectively. Specifically, when compared with UNet, its recall is increased by 0.8% and 1.2% while <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${F}_1$</tex-math></inline-formula> -parameter is improved by 0.6% and 0.8%, respectively, in the two test sites.

Maneuvering platform high-squint SAR imaging method based on perturbation KT and subregion phase filtering

The imaging parameters of high-squint synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mounted on maneuvering platforms have obvious spatial variability, which cannot be effectively solved by traditional SAR imaging algorithms and limits the focus depth. To extend the focus depth of maneuvering SAR, an imaging method is proposed based on perturbation keystone transform (KT) and subregion phase filtering (SRPF). In the process of range cell migration correction, the azimuth-dependent range curvature is corrected by introducing the perturbation factor in two-dimensional (2-D) frequency domain, and then the linear range cell migration is corrected by conducting the azimuth KT. In the process of azimuth compression, after removing the negative influence generated by the 2-D frequency-domain perturbation, the precise azimuth time-domain phase is reconstructed. And then, the method of SRPF is proposed to extend the azimuth focus depth. This method divides the range cell into several subregions and carries out the phase filtering and deramp process in each subregion. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method has high efficiency and can effectively expand the focus depth of high-squint SAR mounted on maneuvering platforms.

Fast Registration of Multiview Slant-Range SAR Images

Unlike geocoded images, slant-range (SR) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images vary from imaging resolution to angles, which are difficult to be registered directly using the traditional SAR image registration methods. A possible way is to match their corresponding geocoded images and to project the correspondences to SR images. However, this way is time consuming and suffers from both registration and projection errors. In this letter, an automatic and efficient method is proposed to directly match multiview SR SAR images. We first estimate the scale and rotation differences between two SR images from the metadata delivered by vendors alongside the image file. Specifically, the scale differences of the range and azimuth directions are estimated by transforming the range and azimuth pixel intervals into a uniform geographical resolution, and the rotation differences are estimated by comparing the azimuth angles of an image-pair. A global-to-local framework is then implemented to accelerate the registration process. In the global stage, we fix the scale and rotation parameters in SAR-scale-invariant-feature-transform (SAR-SIFT) method to avoid mismatches. In the local stage, the phase correlation of cropped patches is parallelized to generate accurate matches. Experimental results on 13 multiview SAR images of the Omaha city show that the proposed method can provide accurate and efficient registration results for each pair of the 13 images, and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods both in accuracy and in efficiency.

A New SAR Imaging Method for Sparse Field Traget

Satellite borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become an indispensable means of earth observation because of its ability of all-weather, all-weather and global observation. However, at present, the space borne SAR still has the characteristics of large volume and high cost. In recent years, the vigorous development of micro satellite field has also promoted the research of small, intelligent and distributed cooperative imaging field of space borne SAR. The traditional spaceborne SAR imaging method is to process the echo of the received LFM signal in the two-dimensional pulse compression domain. Due to the targets in the ocean are usually sparsed, it is an effective method to detect the region of interest and targets by analyzing the echo and transform domain. In this paper, the method of azimuth pulse compression is used to realize the fast perception and imaging of sparse field targets. Through comparative analysis, it can be seen that the method has a greater improvement in resource and time consumption performance compared with the traditional method.

Parametric Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Recovery for Multiple Linear Structures: An Image Domain Approach

The linear structures in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images can provide important geometric information regarding the illuminated objects. However, the linear structures of various objects sometimes disappear in traditional SAR images, which severely affects the application in automated scene analysis and information extraction techniques. This paper proposes a parametric SAR image recovery method for linear structures of extended targets. By extracting the spatial phase distribution feature in image domain, the proposed method is used to identify the endpoints among all of the scattered points in SAR images and reconstruct the disappeared linear structures based on the scattering model. The method can be generally divided into three procedures: endpoints and point targets classification, linear structures recognition, and linear structures reconstruction. In the first step, the endpoints of linear structures and point targets are classified by setting a threshold related to the spatial phase distribution feature. Afterwards, the linear structures recognition method is used to determine which two endpoints can be formed into a linear structure. Finally, the parametric scattering models are used to reconstruct the disappeared linear structures. Experiments are conducted on both computer simulations and the data that were acquired by microwave anechoic chamber experiment, tower crane radar experiment, and unmanned vehicle radar experiment in order to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

SAR Image Change Detection Based on Multiscale Capsule Network

Traditional synthetic aperture radar image change detection methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) face the challenges of speckle noise and deformation sensitivity. To mitigate these issues, we proposed a Multiscale Capsule Network (Ms-CapsNet) to extract the discriminative information between the changed and unchanged pixels. On the one hand, the multiscale capsule module is employed to exploit the spatial relationship of features. Therefore, equivariant properties can be achieved by aggregating the features from different positions. On the other hand, an adaptive fusion convolution (AFC) module is designed for the proposed Ms-CapsNet. Higher semantic features can be captured for the primary capsules. Feature extracted by the AFC module significantly improves the robustness to speckle noise. The effectiveness of the proposed Ms-CapsNet is verified on three real SAR datasets. The comparison experiments with four state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Our codes are available at https://github.com/summitgao/SAR_CD_MS_CapsNet .

An Image Formation Algorithm for Bistatic SAR Using GNSS Signal With Improved Range Resolution

Passive synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals as the illuminators of opportunity has a relative coarse range resolution due to the narrow bandwidth of the navigation signals and the bi-static acquisition geometry, limiting its application for high-resolution requirement. In this paper, an image formation algorithm for range resolution improvement is investigated. A modified second order differentiation based method is applied on the range compressed signal of reference channel and surveillance channel, improving range resolution and keeping side-lobes at a lower level simultaneously, and the phase of processed signal is preserved by phase multiplication compensation for the following azimuth compression processing. To validate the effectiveness and benefits of the proposed algorithm in terms of range resolution and targets side-lobes, point targets simulation under different situations and real field experiment with strong scatters are conducted and discussed. Compared with the traditional GNSS-based passive SAR imaging algorithm, the results of the proposed method show that the imaging performance can be improved for better range resolution and lower side-lobes, benefitting for better distinguishing nearby targets and recognizing weak targets.

Image Formation of Azimuth Periodically Gapped SAR Raw Data with Complex Deconvolution

The phenomenon of periodical gapping in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which is induced in various ways, creates challenges in focusing raw SAR data. To handle this problem, a novel method is proposed in this paper. Complex deconvolution is utilized to restore the azimuth spectrum of complete data from the gapped raw data in the proposed method. In other words, a new approach is provided by the proposed method to cope with periodically gapped raw SAR data via complex deconvolution. The proposed method provides a robust implementation of deconvolution for processing azimuth gapped raw data. The proposed method mainly consists of phase compensation and recovering the azimuth spectrum of raw data with complex deconvolution. The gapped data become sparser in the range of the Doppler domain after phase compensation. Then, it is feasible to recover the azimuth spectrum of the complete data from gapped raw data via complex deconvolution in the Doppler domain. Afterwards, the traditional SAR imaging algorithm is capable of focusing the reconstructed raw data in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated via point target simulation and surface target simulation. Moreover, real SAR data were utilized to further demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

A Drone Fleet-Borne SAR Model and Three-Dimensional Imaging Algorithm

Due to the advantages of low cost and flexible flight, small drones are showing tremendous application prospect in plenty of fields. Aiming at public area monitoring, a drone fleet-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) model is built in this paper. In this model, each radar is mounted on a small drone while illuminating the area of interest and the drones fly forward straightly in an array form. For practical feasibility, it is assumed that each radar works independently and simultaneously. To avoid interference, frequency-divided (FD) signals are adopted. Besides, bandwidth synthesizing is performed to improve the range resolution. Furthermore, 3D imaging is realized via combining the traditional 2D SAR imaging technique and the sensor array signal processing method. In specification, beamforming (BF) is adopted for the array direction compression. With flexible data acquisition model and fast imaging algorithm, 3D imaging using drone fleet borne SAR has great potential in real-time monitoring. The simulation experiments of point targets are performed and the imaging results validate the effectiveness of the proposed imaging model and 3D image formation algorithm.
