Widely described as the ‘Margaret Mead of the anthropology of tourism,’ Dr. Valene Smith’s edited collection, ‘Hosts and Guests: The Anthropology of Tourism’ unleashed a new generation of scholars from anthropology, geography, sociology and beyond that recognized tourism as a topic worthy of academic attention.
