Romania has a tourist potential which makes it one of the most endowed states from this point of view. For emphasizing the manner in which this potential was exploited we analyzed, in this article, the evolution of the tourism contribution to the GDP forming, of the working force employment, and the main indicators specific to the field, and namely: the accommodation capacity and its manner of use, the distribution according to geographical areas, the arrivals and the nights spent by tourists in the tourism accommodation facilities of Romania, the evolution of the average stay and the degree of employment. The correlation of results reflects a low degree of resources use, the tourism development potential being conditioned and in strong correlation with the economic growth, the development and modernization of infrastructure, technology and human resources, the adequate promotion of the field and the increase of the population’s standard of living. As regards competitiveness, Romania occupies one of the last places among the 58 analyzed stated, and namely the 54th place, with a score of 47.48 points of 100 points possible. In the top of competitiveness in tourism, we occupy a modest place, 66, of the 133 analyzed states at world level, advancing with 3 positions in 2010 compared to 2009, and at the European level 34 of 42 analyzed countries, according to a report published by the World Economic Forum. In order to consolidate the tourism competitiveness growth rhythm, it is necessary to focus on more important weak points, among which: the need of modernizing the health infrastructure, attracting the specialists in the fields of top technologic, improving the qualifications and the quality of services and counteracting some aspects where Romania is weakly rated (in the context of world competitiveness (as regards the economic performance: the direct foreign investments, the tourism collections and the real GDP increase.
