Digitalized Control Algorithm of Bridgeless Totem-Pole PFC with a Simple Control Structure Based on the Phase Angle

Compared to the conventional boost power factor correction (PFC) converter, a totem-pole bridgeless PFC has high efficiency because it does not have an input diode rectifier stage, but a current spike may occur when the polarity of the grid voltage changes. This paper proposes a digital control algorithm for bridgeless totem-pole PFC with a simple control structure based on the phase angle of grid voltage. The proposed algorithm has a PI-based double-loop control structure and performs DC-link voltage and input inductor current control. Rectifying switches operate based on the proposed rectification algorithm using phase angle information calculated through a single-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) to prevent current spikes. The feed-forward duty ratio value is calculated according to the polarity of the grid voltage and added to the double-loop controller to perform appropriate power factor control. The performance and feasibility of the proposed control algorithm are verified through a 3 kW hardware prototype.

Virtual Admittance Feedforward Compensation and Phase Correction for Average-Current-Mode-Controlled Totem-Pole PFC Converters

This paper explores a current distortion problem in totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converters with average current mode (ACM) control. With in-depth modeling for the current and voltage loops, it was found that the current distortion is caused by the limited current loop bandwidth and input filter capacitor. These factors lead to the presence of a susceptance component in the input admittance, which degrades the power factor (PF) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of the PFC converter. To solve this problem, this paper proposes virtual admittance feedforward compensation (VAFC) and phase correction methods to adjust the input admittance to pure conductance. The VAFC can generate virtual admittance that compensates for susceptance components in the input admittance, while phase correction can generate an equivalent current source that offsets the current in input capacitors. Furthermore, a phase lock loop (PLL) is introduced to realize the VAFC, which reduces the feedforward interference caused by input voltage sampling noise. Finally, an experimental prototype was built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies. According to the test results, the proposed compensation strategy improves the PF by 1.23%, while reducing the THD by 2.52% and achieving a peak efficiency of 98.69%.

Virtual Admittance Reshaping Based Input Current Phase Shift Suppression Method for Totem-Pole Bridgeless PFC Converter

Grid-side current phase shift (GCPS) is an important issue in totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (TBPFC) converters. In this article, a virtual admittance reshaping based GCPS suppression method is proposed based on the establishment of the admittance model of the TBPFC converter including the EMI filter. The virtual admittance reshaping does not need additional current and voltage sensors and can realize complex admittance through a control algorithm. Thus, the current phase error can be adjusted to zero with the optimal design. The inherent admittance of the system is analyzed from the perspective of system frequency characteristics to extract leading-phase admittance. Then, the parallel admittance is produced through the inductance current for canceling it. The current reference and the modulation voltage are combined to realize obtaining the equivalent virtual admittance and meanwhile reduce the burden of the current regulator. The sensitivity of the system parameters is analyzed, and the saturation effect of the inductor and the error of the EMI filter parameters have little effect on admittance reshaping. Besides, the research method does not need to adjust parameters according to the load. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments on a TBPFC converter platform.

Input Voltage Feedforward Active Damping-Based Input Current Harmonic Suppression Method for Totem-Pole Bridgeless PFC Converter

Grid-side current harmonic (GCH) is an important issue in totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (TBPFC) converters. In this article, a GCH suppression (GCHS) method based on input voltage feedforward active damping is proposed. First, an admittance model of the TBPFC converter considering the electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter and the time delay of the digital control system is established. The damping characteristics of the system are improved by constructing a virtual admittance, which does not require additional current and voltage sensors. Based on the admittance model analysis, the active damping can be matched and adapted to a wide power range. Through the extraction of harmonic information and the combination with current setting and modulation voltage information, the suppression of current harmonic under different loads can be realized. Besides, the sensitivity of the system parameters is analyzed. The system delay, load change, and system parameter change are considered in the design of active damping, so the current harmonics can be effectively suppressed in a wide power range. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method are verified by experiments on a TBPFC converter platform.

A Variable Inductor Controlled Single-Stage AC/DC Converter for Modular Multi-Channel LED Driver

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in street lighting, landscape lighting, liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting, healthcare, etc. As an important part of LED lighting products, LED driver plays a vital role in maintenance costs reduction, energy saving and lifetime prolongation. In this paper, a single-stage LED driver is proposed, which is integrated by a totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) unit and several modular LCL-T resonant rectifiers. The totem-pole bridgeless PFC unit and the LCL-T resonant rectifiers are integrated by sharing switches, which can simplify the circuit and reduce the system cost. The output current can be regulated by applying the variable inductor control. Constant duty cycle and fixed switching frequency operation can be achieved as well. The operating principle and the performance of the proposed converter are analyzed in this paper. In addition, a precise parameter design method is proposed by considering the high-order harmonics. At last, an experimental prototype is established to validate the proposed parameter design and variable inductor control method.

Design and Implementation of a Control Method for GaN-Based Totem-Pole Boost-Type PFC Rectifier in Energy Storage Systems

With the unceasing advancement of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technology, the minimal reverse-recovery charge Qrr and other more powerful natures of WBG transistors enable totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction to become a dominant solution for energy storage systems (ESS). This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a control structure for a totem-pole boost PFC with newfangled enhancement-mode gallium nitride field-effect transistors (eGaN FETs), not only to simplify the control implementation but also to achieve high power quality and efficiency. The converter is designed to convert a 90–264-VAC input to a 385-VDC output for a 2.6-kW output power. Lastly, to validate the methodology, an experimental prototype is characterized and fabricated. The uttermost efficiency at 230 VAC reaches 99.14%. The lowest total harmonic distortion in the current (ITHD) at high line condition (230 V) attains 1.52% while the power factor gains 0.9985.

A Reconfigurable Totem-Pole PFC Rectifier With Light Load Optimization Control Strategy and Soft-Switching Capability

This article presents a reconfigurable totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction converter employing an auxiliary circuit and a simple control scheme to achieve high efficiency. Under light load condition, instead of delivering the energy through the main switch, the proposed converter utilizes only the auxiliary switches by using a different control scheme. Since the auxiliary switches have much smaller parasitic capacitances than the main switches, the proposed converter can obtain high efficiency under light load condition. Over middle-to-heavy load condition, the proposed converter can acquire both zero-voltage switching operation and relieved reverse-recovery problem thanks to the auxiliary circuit, which leads to high efficiency even with Si-MOSFET in the continuous conduction mode control. As a result, the proposed converter can achieve high efficiency over the entire load condition. The effectiveness of the proposed converter is verified by a prototype with ac 230Vrms input and 750 W output.

High-Efficiency Zero-Voltage-Switching Totem-Pole Bridgeless Rectifier With Integrated Inrush Current Limiter Circuit

A totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction rectifier with the soft-switching capability is proposed in this article. The proposed converter utilizes an inrush current limiter (ICL) circuit, which is applied to satisfy the inrush current limit requirement to achieve the soft switching of main switches for high efficiency, so that high efficiency can be achieved by accomplishing the zero-voltage-switching operation. It can also relieve the reverse recovery problem of main switches, and minimize the soft-switching circuit by integrating the ICL circuit. Besides, the validity of the proposed converter is performed by the experimental results of a prototype converter with a 100–240 ${V}_{\text{AC}}$ universal line input and an 800-W (400 V/2 A) output.

Analysis and Design of a Single-Stage Bridgeless High-Frequency Resonant AC/AC Converter

A single-stage high-frequency resonant ac/ac converter converts the ac-line input voltage into the high-frequency sinusoidal output voltage, which consists of two power conversion units, i.e., a power factor correction (PFC) unit and a high-frequency resonant dc/ac unit, and it can be used to derive a modular multichannel constant current LED driver. By adopting a totem-pole bridgeless PFC boost rectifier to reduce conduction losses, a single-stage bridgeless high-frequency resonant ac/ac converter is proposed in this paper. The operating principle is described, and the performance analysis is presented in detail. Moreover, the quantitative parameter design method of the main circuit is presented, which is suitable for other single-stage ac input converters, such as a single-stage PFC rectifier. Finally, a 130-W prototype has been built and tested to verify the correction of related theoretical analysis and parameter design.

Design of GaN-Based MHz Totem-Pole PFC Rectifier

The totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier has recently been recognized as a promising front-end candidate for applications like servers and telecommunication power supplies. This paper begins with a discussion of the advantages of using emerging high-voltage gallium-nitride (GaN) devices in totem-pole PFC rectifiers rather than traditional PFC rectifiers. The critical-mode operation is used in the totem-pole PFC rectifier in order to achieve both high frequency and high efficiency. Then, several high-frequency issues and detailed design considerations are introduced, including extending zero-voltage-switching operation for the entire line-cycle, a variable on-time strategy for zero-crossing distortion suppression, and interleaving control for ripple current cancellation. The volume reduction of differential-mode electromagnetic interference filters is also presented, which benefits greatly from MHz high-frequency operation and multiphase interleaving. Finally, a dual-phase interleaved GaN-based MHz totem-pole PFC rectifier is demonstrated with 99% peak efficiency and 220 W/in $^{\mathrm {{3}}}$ power density.

A Gallium Nitride-Based Power Module for Totem-Pole Bridgeless Power Factor Correction Rectifier

The totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier has recently gained popularity for ac-dc power conversion. The emerging gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT), having a small body diode reverse recovery effect and low switching loss, is a promising device for use in the totem-pole approach. The design, fabrication, and thermal analysis of a GaN-based full-bridge multi-chip module (MCM) for totem-pole bridgeless PFC rectifier are introduced in this work. Four cascode GaN devices using the same pair of high-voltage GaN HEMT and low-voltage silicon (Si) power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) chips, as used in the discrete TO-220 package, were integrated onto one aluminum nitride direct-bonded-copper (AlN-DBC) substrate in a newly designed MCM. This integrated power module achieves the same function as four discrete devices mounted on the circuit board. In this module design, the Si and GaN bare die were arranged in a stack-die format for each cascode device to eliminate the critical common source inductance, and thus to reduce parasitic ringing at turn-off transients. In addition, an extra capacitor was added in parallel with the drain-source terminals of the Si MOSFET in each cascode GaN device to compensate for the mismatched junction capacitance between the Si MOSFET and GaN HEMT, which could accomplish the internal zero-voltage switching of the GaN device and reduce its turn-on loss. The AlN-DBC substrate and the flip-chip format were also applied in the module design. This GaN-based MCM shows an improved heat dissipation capability based on the thermal analysis and comparison with the discrete GaN device. The totem-pole bridgeless PFC rectifier built using this integrated power module is expected to have a peak efficiency of higher than 99% with a projected power density greater than 400 W/in3.

Thermal analysis and improvement of cascode GaN device package for totem-pole bridgeless PFC rectifier

The totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier has a simpler topology and higher efficiency than other boost-type bridgeless PFC rectifiers. Its promising performance is enabled by using high-voltage gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron-mobility transistors, which have considerably better figures of merit (e.g., lower reverse recovery charges and less switching losses) than the state-of-the-art silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. Cascode GaN devices in traditional packages, i.e., the TO-220 and power quad flat no-lead, are used in the totem-pole PFC boost rectifier. But the parasitic inductances induced by the traditional packages not only significantly deteriorate the switching characteristics of the discrete GaN device but also adversely affect the performance of the built PFC rectifier. A new stack-die packaging structure with an embedded capacitor has been introduced and proven to be efficient in reducing parasitic ringing at the turn-off transition and achieving true zero-voltage-switching turn-on. However, the thermal dissipation capability of the device packaged in this configuration becomes a limitation on further pushing the operating frequency and the output current level for high-efficiency power conversion. This paper focuses on the thermal analysis of the cascode GaN devices in different packages and the GaN-based multichip module used in a two-phase totem-pole bridgeless PFC boost rectifier. A series of thermal models are built based on the actual structures and materials of the packaged devices to evaluate their thermal performance. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulation results of the cascode GaN device in a flip-chip format demonstrate the possibility of increasing the device switching speed while maintaining the peak temperature of the device below 125 °C. Thermal analysis of the GaN-based power module in a very similar structure is also conducted using the FEA method. Experimental data measured using the fabricated devices and modules validate the simulation results. The developed new package in a flip-chip configuration enhances the thermal dissipation capability of the cascode GaN device in the stack-die format. The GaN-based power module built using the same packaging structure also demonstrates desirable thermal performance.
