Harmonic in-plane patch loading induced nonlinear dynamic instability of unidirectional and bidirectional stiffened composite plates

A finite element framework is established to study the nonlinear dynamic instability of stiffened plates subjected to in-plane harmonic patch loading. An eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element and a three-noded curved beam element are used to model the skin and the stiffener, respectively. The Green–Lagrange strain displacement relationship is adopted to formulate the system matrices for the plate and the stiffener, adopting the total Lagrangian approach. The Bolotin method is adopted to trace the boundaries of linear dynamic instability region. The Incremental Harmonic Balance (IHB) method is used to investigate the nonlinear instability behavior of stiffened plates. The effect of varying loading patches along with the number of stiffeners in unidirectional ( x-directional and y-directional) and bidirectional ( x as well as y-directional) stiffened plates on the nonlinear frequency response is studied. It is observed that the cross-stiffened plates with the higher number of stiffeners are dynamically more stable than the unidirectional stiffened plates. Moreover, the stiffened plates with smaller loading patches are dynamically more stable than those with larger loading patches.

Nonlinear dynamic instability of laminated composite stiffened plates subjected to in-plane pulsating loading

A nonlinear finite element dynamic instability analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates subjected to in-plane harmonic edge loading is presented in this article along with the linear and nonlinear dynamic response study. The eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element and a compatible three-noded curved beam element are used to model the stiffened plates. Bolotin method is applied to analyze the dynamic instability regions in linear case. Incremental Harmonic Balance (IHB) method is applied to solve the nonlinear frequency response equations and Newmark-β method is used to solve the linear and nonlinear time history response equations.

Buckling response of laminated composite stiffened plates subjected to partial in-plane edge loading

ABSTRACTThis article presents the buckling analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates subjected to partial in-plane edge loading. The finite element method is used to carry out the analysis. The eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element with C0 continuity and first-order shear deformation and a compatible three-noded curved beam element are used to model the plate skin and the stiffeners, respectively. The eigen value analysis is carried out to track the buckling load. The convergence study is performed for some specific problems and the results are compared with the available results in the literature. It is observed that the convergence of results is very fast for this finite element model. Effect of different parameters like orientation of fibers, number of layers, and loading types are considered in the present investigation. It is also observed that all these parameters have significant effect on the buckling response of the composite stiffened plate.

Dynamic Characters of Stiffened Composite Conoidal Shell Roofs with Cutouts: Design Aids and Selection Guidelines

Dynamic characteristics of stiffened composite conoidal shells with cutout are analyzed in terms of the natural frequency and mode shapes. A finite element code is developed for the purpose by combining an eight-noded curved shell element with a three-noded curved beam element. The code is validated by solving benchmark problems available in the literature and comparing the results. The size of the cutouts and their positions with respect to the shell centre are varied for different edge constraints of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite conoids. The effects of these parametric variations on the fundamental frequencies and mode shapes are considered in details. The results furnished here may be readily used by practicing engineers dealing with stiffened composite conoids with cutouts central or eccentric.

EFFECT OF HARMONIC IN-PLANE EDGE LOADING ON DYNAMIC STABILITY OF STIFFENED SHELL PANELS WITH CUTOUTS

The effect of non-uniform in-plane pulsating edge loading on dynamic instability behavior of perforated stiffened shell panels is presented in this paper using finite element method. The eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element and a compatible three-noded curved beam element are used to model the shell panels and the stiffeners, respectively. Bolotin method is applied to analyze the dynamic instability regions. Numerical results of convergence studies are presented and comparison is made with the published results from the literature. The effects of various parameters like shell geometry, loading type, cutout size and dynamic load factors are considered in dynamic instability analysis of stiffened shell panels with cutout. The buckling results of the cutout stiffened panels are also presented.

Parametric Study on the Dynamic Instability Behavior of Laminated Composite Stiffened Plate

This paper deals with the study of dynamic or parametric instability behavior of laminated composite stiffened plates with step-uniform and concentrated in-plane harmonic edge loading. The eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element and a compatible three-noded curved beam element are used to model the plate and the stiffeners, respectively. The method of Hill’s infinite determinant is applied to analyze the dynamic instability regions. Numerical results are presented through convergence and comparison with the published results from the literature. The effects of parameters like loading type, stiffening scheme, lamination scheme, dynamic load factor, and boundary conditions are considered in the dynamic instability analysis of laminated composite stiffened plate. It has been shown that the type of loading and the width of loading have remarkable effect on the dynamic instability characteristics of the stiffened plate.

Dynamic Stability Analysis of Stiffened Shell Panels With Cutouts

A finite element dynamic instability analysis of stiffened shell panels with cutout subjected to uniform in-plane harmonic edge loading along the two opposite edges is presented in this paper. The eight-noded isoparametric degenerated shell element and a compatible three-noded curved beam element are used to model the shell panels and the stiffeners, respectively. As the usual formulation of degenerated beam element is found to overestimate the torsional rigidity, an attempt has been made to reformulate it in an efficient manner. Moreover the new formulation for the beam element requires five degrees of freedom per node as that of shell element. Bolotin method is applied to analyze the dynamic instability regions. Numerical results of convergence studies are presented and comparison is made with the published results from literature. The effects of various parameters such as shell geometry, radius of curvature, cutout size, stiffening scheme, and dynamic load factors are considered in dynamic instability analysis of stiffened shell panels with cutout. The free vibration and static stability (buckling) results are also presented. With the consideration of radius of curvatures the panels reduce from deep shell case to shallow shell case and finally become flat plate.

Linear static analysis of composite hat-stiffened laminated shells using finite elements

Analysis of composite stiffened panels used in aerospace, ship and other engineering structures by the method of finite elements has been presented. The formulation presented is based on the concept of equal displacements at the shell–stiffener interface. An eight-noded isoparametric shell element is used in association with three-noded curved beam element for the formulation of the stiffened panel element. First-order shear deformation theory is used in the present study. The stiffness matrix of the stiffener is computed first irrespective of its position within the plate/shell element. The stiffness matrix so computed for the stiffener is then transferred to that of the plate/shell element nodes depending on its position and orientation within the element before assembling the element stiffness matrix. A generalised formulation for the hat-shaped stiffener is presented. The investigation is restricted to linear static analysis of composite stiffened panels and parametric studies have been made to study the various aspects of laminated composite shell with open and closed shaped stiffeners.

A three‐noded shear‐flexible curved beam element based on coupled displacement field interpolations

AbstractAn efficient shear‐flexible three‐noded curved beam element is proposed herein. The shear flexibility is based on Timoshenko beam theory and the element has three degrees of freedom, viz., tangential displacement (u), radial displacement (w) and the section‐rotation (θ). A quartic polynomial interpolation for flexural rotation ψ is assumed a priori. Making use of the physical composition of θ in terms of ψ and u, a novel way of deriving the polynomial interpolations for u and w is presented, by solving force‐moment and moment‐shear equilibrium equations simultaneously. The field interpolation for θ is then constructed from that of ψ and u. The procedure leads to high‐order polynomial field interpolations which share some of the generalized degrees of freedom, by means of coefficients involving material and geometric properties of the element. When applied to a straight Euler–Bernoulli beam, all the coupled coefficients vanish and the formulation reduces to classical quintic‐in‐w and quadratic‐in‐u element, with u, w, and ∂w/∂x as degrees of freedom. The element is totally devoid of membrane and shear locking phenomena. The formulation presents an efficient utilization of the nine generalized degrees of freedom available for the polynomial interpolation of field variables for a three‐noded curved beam element. Numerical examples on static and free vibration analyses demonstrate the efficacy and locking‐free property of the element. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Analysis of stiffened shell for ships and ocean structures by finite element method

Static analysis of stiffened shells has been carried out using an eight-noded isoparametric element for the shell and a three-noded curved beam element for the stiffener. A same displacement function is used for the shell and the stiffener elements. A modified technique has been followed to analyse the shell, which is an improvement over the degenerated shell concept. The stiffness matrix of the curved beam element is generated irrespective of its position and orientation within the shell element. The stiffness matrix of the stiffener is then transferred to all the nodes of the shell element. Numerical examples of stiffened shells with concentric and eccentric stiffeners have been analysed and the results presented together with those available in published literature.
