Aqueous photochemical aging of water-soluble smoke particles from crop straws burning

Most aqueous oxidation studies focus on single model precursors, while the photochemical aging of actual water soluble organic matter (WSOM) in particles emitted from biomass burning remains poorly understood. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was first used to analyze the WSOM in smoke particles emitted from three crop straws burning. The results show that the dominant WSOM in three crop straws (CS) smoke are phenolic substances with small differences. Aqueous photochemical aging of WSOM in CS smoke was investigated under simulated sunlight exposure. High-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-AMS) analyzed aqueous secondary organic aerosol (aqSOA) and it was found that the oxidation degree of aqSOA increased with prolonged aging. No obvious increase in the abundance of N-containing organic ions was observed over the course of aqueous aging. As aqueous aging progresses, the pH of the solution gradually decreases, accompanied by the continuous generation of organic acids. Studies on dithiothreitol (DTT) activity indicate that the impact of aqueous photochemical aging on health is not significant.The solution after photoaging shows relatively lower light absorption ability than the initial solution. The aqueous photochemical aging also led to a gradual reduction of fluorescence at excitation/emission = 250–260 nm/350 nm (protein-like substances) for CS smoke WSOM, suggesting the significant degradation of chromophores. However, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) revealed that aqueous aged CS smoke WSOM contains compounds with high humification index, confirming that the fluorophore composition is altered by aqueous aging. The humic-like substance (HULIS) concentration increased for the first 3 h and then decreased, closely matching the pattern of a new fluorescence peak. Finally, GC/MS analysis of the products indicated that there was obvious decline in proportion of methoxyphenol. The results of this study are important for understanding the aqueous-phase oxidation reactions of CS smoke WSOM in the atmosphere and their light-absorption characteristics and health impacts.

Enhancing acid resistance of Escherichia coli based on directed morphology evolutionary of key transcription factor bolA

Succinic acid, as one of the important fermentation products, is commonly used as an acidulant, flavoring agent, and antimicrobial agent. However, the accumulation of organic acids in the later fermentation phase will restrict the production efficiency of strain. To address this issue, the directed evolution on the key transcription morphology factor bolA gene was performed to enhance acid resistance of Escherichia coli by ep-PCR library and CRISPR/Cas9. The best mutant strain 5-21-5 was screened from 4000 mutant colonies ep-PCR library, which showed higher cell survives in succinic acid stress. Its acid resistance ability was systematically illustrated from multiple aspects by transmission electron microscope (TEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis, respectively. Higher tyrosine and tryptophan protein level was beneficial to acid resistance, while cell tend to short rod shape. Subsequently, with the assistance of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology knocking the mutated sequences into the genome, the succinic acid yield of strain M-K10 reached 9.8 g/L, representing a 15.29% increase compared to the Escherichia coli MG1655 without gene editing.

Efficient hydrogen production from food waste leachate using single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell

The aim of this study was to develop an efficient strategy for enhancing H2 production in the single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) using food waste leachate as a substrate. Different pH (8.5, 9.5, 10.5, and 11.2), applied voltage (0.8, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 V) and negative pressure control (−50 kPa) were tested in the single-chamber MEC. Suitable pH adjustment could greatly promote electricity generation and H2 production rather than negative pressure control. Under pH of 11.5 and 2.4 V, the maximum current density reached 121.9 ± 10.9 A/m³ with an average H2 concentration of 91.9 ± 3.2% in a 1.2-L single-chamber MEC within 30 continuous cycles of operation (∼607 h), which was constructed with carbon brushes as the anode and stainless steel brushes as the cathode. The maximum H2 production rate reached 853.2 ± 70.3 L/m³•d with an H2 yield of 26.3 mmol•H2/g•COD. The COD removal of 68.3 ± 6.8% and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix spectra of the effluent in the MEC within 21 ± 3h indicated efficient organics degradation in the leachate. Our results should provide a promising way to enhance the H2 production of MEC during leachate treatment.

Enhanced Removal of Refractory Organic Compounds from Coking Wastewater Using Polyaluminum Chloride with Coagulant Aids

This study explores the enhanced removal of refractory organic compounds from coking wastewater using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) with two different basicity levels (0.5 and 2.5), in combination with coagulant aids such as cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and iron ions. The results demonstrated that both PACl formulations significantly outperformed commercial PACl in terms of COD and color removal, with PACl at the basicity of 2.5 achieving slightly higher efficiency than PACl at the basicity of 0.5. The improved performance was attributed to the higher content of polymeric aluminum species, enhancing charge neutralization and bridging adsorption. The addition of coagulant aids further improved the performance, with PACl at the basicity of 2.5 combined with iron ions achieving the highest COD (48.41%) and color removal (80.77%), due to sweep coagulation and complexation. Organic composition analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy indicated that PACl combined with iron ions was the most effective in removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds. Additionally, a floc analysis showed that the flocs formed with iron ions were more compact and had better settleability compared to those formed with CPAM, further contributing to the improved coagulation efficiency. These results highlight the importance of optimizing the PACl basicity and coagulant aid selection for the enhanced removal of refractory organic compounds from coking wastewater, offering a promising strategy for advanced wastewater treatment.

Promoting effects of ferric ions on Microcystis aeruginosa growth and arsenate accumulation and reduction at different phosphorus environments

The effects of different dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) associated with distinct iron conditions (iron deficient (dFe), ferric ions (Fe3+), and colloidal iron (CFe)) on algal growth and arsenate (As(V)) metabolism were systematically evaluated and compared in Microcystis aeruginosa. Two chemical forms of DOP (D-glucose-6-phosphate (GP) and phytic acid (PA)), as well as dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), were employed as distinct phosphorus environments. The results revealed that As(V) metabolism of M. aeruginosa was more influenced by different phosphorus forms than by different iron conditions. Conversely, the release of microcystins in the media was found to be significantly more affected by the different phosphorus forms than by the iron conditions. Moreover, DOP was observed to promote arsenic (As) biotransformation, particularly the efflux of methylated As from a single algal cell, whereas DIP was found to primarily facilitate As(V) accumulation in algae. The total As metabolism amount per algal cell under PA was observed to be five times that observed under DIP and GP. The influence of iron conditions on the synthesis of algal metabolites was notable, as evidenced by the metabolites identified in algae of aliphatic (δ 1.28–1.68), humic acid-like and aromatic protein-like substances through 1H-NMR spectra and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. This impact was particularly notable at Fe3+ conditions, due to the role of Fe3+ as a micronutrient with highly bioavailable forms, which enhanced the synthesis of organic compounds in algae and promoted algal growth. Consequently, Fe3+ could inhibit As accumulation under DIP but promote it under DOP. The obtained results facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the combined role of different phosphorus forms and iron conditions in algal bloom outbreaks and As(V) metabolism.

Tracing fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) characteristics and water quality parameters: Insights from an urban industrial river to marine zone.

This study aims to identify continuous water quality changes and identify fluorescence properties from urban rivers to marine zones. Various types of natural and anthropogenic sources derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been identified in this study. These include soil-derived DOM, plant remnants, and soluble particles produced when organic material partially decomposes and is released by microorganisms, such as bacteria, algae, and plants. DOM was characterized using a three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3DEEM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and water quality parameters from the Buriganga River, Dhaka to Patenga Seaport, Chittagong, along with the Shitalakshya River, a small portion of the Padma River, and the Meghna River. To better understand the data analysis, the study area was divided into three central regions: urban industrial rivers, industrial estuarine rivers, and marine zones. In the urban industrial river, 3DEEM and PARAFAC identified five fluorophores (peaks: A, C, M, T, and Tuv) with five components: detergent-like, fulvic-like, tryptophan or protein-like, fulvic-like (C-type), and protein-like, which might originate from the industrial activities and sewage pollution. In the industrial estuarine river zone, three fluorophores have been identified (peaks: A, C, Tuv) with two known components, namely, fulvic acid (A-type) and fulvic acid (C-type), with an unknown photoproduct at Ex/Em = 295/368 (peak Tuv). Components in the industrial river zone may originate from terrestrial sources, indicating vegetation along the river. In the marine zone, four fluorophores have been identified (peaks: Tuv, A, T, C) with two components, that is, protein- or tryptophan-like and humic acid-like from coral origin. The intensities of both fulvic-like and protein-like substances were high in urban industrial river water owing to industrial activity and sewage pollution. SUVA254 suggests high aromaticity in all three regions, whereas the optical properties suggest that terrestrial and microbial components are present in the urban industrial and estuarine rivers. This further indicates that urban industrial river water quality is highly polluted. The lowest degradation potential index (DPI) in the marine zone might result from the presence of the highest number of dissolved solids in the water, and the highest DPI of industrial estuarine rivers explains the comparatively high presence of terrestrial-derived humic (A)- and humic (C)-like components in the ratio to the unknown photoproduct of mid-wavelength. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This study's uniqueness is a 220-km cruise from an urban river to a coastal seaport to analyze fluorescence properties. The study found that most water parameters were within the DoE standards, except for DO, which was consistently low. 3DEEM-PARAFAC identified five fluorophores linked to detergent, fulvic, and protein-like substances from sewage and industrial sources. Our study concludes that microbial and terrestrial sources dominate dissolved organic matter in urban, estuarine, and marine regions.

Components of dissolved organic carbon in relation to environmental factors in lakes along an altitudinal gradient in central China.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is an important organic substance that affects biogeochemical processes and underwater light conditions in aquatic ecosystems. To explore altitudinal variations in DOC components and water quality, 66 surface water samples were collected along an altitudinal gradient (10-1857m) in three regions of central China, including a montane region (Enshi Prefecture) and two floodplain regions (Dongting Lake Basin and Wuhan City). DOC components were measured using a three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, in conjunction with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and fluorescence indices. Generally, lakes at high elevations (Enshi Prefecture) had higher DOC concentrations (a mean value of 6.43mgL-1) than floodplain lakes in Dongting Basin (4.51mgL-1) and Wuhan City (3.89mgL-1). Fluorescence index (FI, a range of 1.37-1.92) and biological index (BIX, a range of 0.47-0.74) indicated that DOC mainly originated from allochthonous sources in the three regions. Enshi Prefecture had relatively lower FI and BIX values, suggestive of a larger contribution of allochthonous carbon in this montane region in comparison with the floodplain regions. Humic-like substances were more abundant than other four fluorescent components, including tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, fulvic acid-like, microbial-like substances. Spearman rank correlation analyses showed that tryptophane-like substances were positively correlated with K+, Mg2+, and Na+, while humic-like substances were negatively correlated with these cations. Taken together, the results can improve our understanding on altitudinal variations in DOC components and potential driving forces.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants via black phosphorus-mediated electron transfer in g-C3N4/BiOI: Degradation mechanisms and biotoxicity assessment

Photocatalysis is a promising strategy for organic pollutant removal, yet developing a capable photocatalyst remains challenging. Using black phosphorus (BP) as an electron buffer material, the ternary composite photocatalysts of xBP/g-C3N4/BiOI were prepared through a straightforward hydrothermal method. Tetracycline (TC) and Rhodamine B (RhB) removals were 100 % (120 min) and 99 % (90 min) by photocatalytic process on 2.5 %BP/g-C3N4/BiOI under xenon lamp irradiation. Photoluminescence and electrochemical measurements confirmed BP's role in reducing charge transfer barriers between g-C3N4 and BiOI, achieving effective separation of photogenerated electrons. The degradation mechanisms of TC and RhB on 2.5 %BP/g-C3N4/BiOI were revealed by the quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy tests, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectrum, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. Plant toxicity assessment experiments confirmed the non-toxic nature of the TC and RhB degradation solutions. Plants grown in the treated solutions exhibited declining trends in both Malondialdehyde and Peroxidase indices compared to untreated solutions. This study offers a fresh approach to advanced photocatalyst design using charge transfer buffer materials.

Attention improvement for data-driven analyzing fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra via interpretable attention mechanism

Analyzing three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra through machine learning models has drawn increasing attention, whereas the reliability of these machine learning models remains unclear due to their “black box” nature. In this study, the convolutional neural network (CNN) for classifying numbers of fluorescent components in 3D-EEM spectra was interpreted by gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM), guided Grad-CAM, and structured attention graphs (SAGs). Results showed that the original CNN classifier with high classification accuracy may make a classification based on misleading attention to the non-fluorescence area in 3D-EEM spectra. By removing Rayleigh scatterings in 3D-EEM spectra and integrating convolutional block attention module (CBAM) in CNN classifiers, the correct attention of the trained CNN classifier with CBAM greatly increased from 17.6% to 57.2%. This work formulated strategies for improving CNN classifiers associated with environmental fields and would provide great help for water determination in both natural and artificial environments.

Efficient and stability electrochemical degradation of Bisphenol A on Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd anode: Mechanistic analysis

The Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd electrodes were fabricated using anodic oxidation and electrodeposition techniques for the electrocatalytic treatment of bisphenol A (BPA) pollutants in coking wastewater. Characterization revealed well-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTA) with a hollow structure, featuring a wall thickness of 36 nm and an inner diameter of approximately 83 nm. The TiO2-NTA interlayer restricted PbO2 growth, leading to a compact crystal structure and increased electrode surface area. Electrochemical tests showed that the Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd electrode outperformed Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2 and Ti/PbO2 electrodes, exhibiting the highest oxygen evolution potential, lowest charge transfer resistance, optimal hydroxyl radical generation, and longest service lifetime. The removal efficiencies for BPA were 95.4 % for Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd, 90.8 % for Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2, and 80.6 % for Ti/PbO2. The Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd electrode also achieved the lowest energy consumption at 0.157 kWh/(g·COD), a 40 % reduction compared to Ti/PbO2. The introduction of TiO2-NTA enhanced electrode stability, electron transfer, and surface area, while neodymium (Nd) doping improved oxygen evolution potential and hydroxyl radical production. Under optimized conditions, the Ti/TiO2-NTA/PbO2-Nd electrode achieved BPA removal efficiencies of 99.24 %, COD removal efficiencies of 82.77 %, and TOC removal efficiencies of 78.92 %. UV–Vis spectrophotometry, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEM), and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analyses revealed potential BPA degradation pathways.

Compositions, sources, and bioavailability of colloidal organic matter in Lake Taihu

Colloidal organic matter (COM) exists ubiquitously in natural waters, and plays a pivotal role in biogeochemical cycles. Lake Taihu is confronted with severe eutrophication and algal blooms. Field investigations were carried out in Lake Taihu and two inflow rivers for two years to identify the source of COM and explore the bioavailability of COM to algae. Compositions and sources of COM were analyzed through UV absorption coefficients and parallel factor analysis of three-dimensional excitation emission matrix spectra (3D EEMs-PARAFAC). Absorption coefficient a(350) of COM in rivers surpassed that in the lake, SUVA254 exhibited noteworthy seasonal variations, and SR indicated a stable autochthonous characteristic. Three components were identified by PARAFAC analysis: tryptophan-like (C1), humic-like (C2), and tyrosine-like (C3). Fluorescence indexes showed that C1 and C3 were mainly autochthonously produced and C2 was derived from allochthonous inputs. The bioassays were conducted to assess the bioavailability of COM to the dominant species, Microcystis aeruginosa. The results showed that colloids supplied rich carbon sources and trace metals, supporting the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa. The specific growth rate, Chl a content, and biological increment of Microcystis aeruginosa in 50 % colloid-added treatment exceeded those in 20 % and 75 % treatments. Simultaneously, the effective quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and the apparent photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETRmax) demonstrated that the photosynthetic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa was higher in 20 % treatment. These findings help in understanding the intricate mechanisms of COM in lake ecosystems, and provide the robust scientific foundation for water management and protection in Lake Taihu.

Efficient phosphorus recovery from waste activated sludge: Pretreatment with natural deep eutectic solvent and recovery as vivianite

Recycling phosphorus from waste activated sludge (WAS) is an effective method to address the nonrenewable nature of phosphorus and mitigate environmental pollution. To overcome the challenge of low phosphorus recovery from WAS due to insufficient disintegration, a method using a citric acid-based natural deep eutectic solvent (CA-NADES) assisted with low-temperature pretreatment was proposed to efficiently release and recover phosphorus. The results of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) confirmed that low-temperature pretreatment promoted the conversion of organic phosphorus (OP) to inorganic phosphorus (IP) and enhanced the effect of CA-NADES. Changes in the three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and flow cytometry (FCM) indicated that the method of CA-NADES with low-temperature thermal simultaneously release IP and OP by disintegrating sludge flocs, dissolving extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure, and cracking cells. When 5 % (v/v) of CA-NADES was added and thermally treated at 60 °C for 30 min, 43 % of total phosphorus (TP) was released from the sludge. The concentrations of proteins and polysaccharides reached 826 and 331 mg/L, respectively, which were 6.30 and 14.43 times higher than those of raw sludge. The dewatering and settling of the sludge were also improved. Metals were either enriched in the solid phase or released into the liquid phase in small quantities (most efficiencies of less than 10 %) for subsequent clean recovery. The released phosphorus was successfully recovered as vivianite with a rate of 90 %. This study develops an efficient, green, and sustainable method for phosphorus recovery from sludge using NADES and provides new insights into the high-value conversion of sludge.

Self-flocculating Chlorella vulgaris: A high-efficiency purification mechanism of radioactive Th4+ in an aquatic environment

This study aimed to investigate the purification of radioactive thorium (Th4+) by Chlorella vulgaris in aquatic environments. Single-factor experiments and response surface optimization tests identified optimal purification conditions. The purification and metabolic response mechanisms of Chlorella to Th4+ were elucidated using physiological and biochemical analyses, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis, and metabolomic profiling. Increases in the Th4+ concentration caused Chlorella to self-flocculate, significantly improving the Th4+ purification efficiency. Under optimal conditions, the Th4+ purification efficiency for Th4+ in wastewater by Chlorella stabilized between 94.3 % and 98.2 %. Morphological analysis revealed that the purified Th4+ existed mainly in a stable residual state. Chlorella efficiently purified wastewater during treatment by regulating environmental pH, performing redox reactions, and utilizing extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to interact with Th4+. Metabolomic analysis indicated that Chlorella adapted to the Th4+-contaminated environment and enhanced its purification function by adjusting the synthesis of metabolites, such as carbohydrates, nucleotides, and amino acids. Chlorella demonstrated a remarkable self-flocculation phenomenon and a high-efficiency purification capability for Th4+, offering new possibilities for environmental remediation. Its purification mechanism involves environmental regulation, redox reactions, and complex metabolic adjustments. The results presented here provide theoretical support for environmental remediation using Chlorella.

Biogas slurry-derived dissolved organic matter inhibited oxytetracycline adsorption by tropical agricultural soils

The increasing presence of oxytetracycline (OTC) in agricultural soils has raised global environmental concerns. We investigated the environmental behavior and fate of OTC in two types of tropical agricultural soils, focusing on the impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from biogas slurry. Techniques such as three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV–vis) were used to explore the adsorption mechanisms. Our findings revealed that biogas slurry-derived DOM decreased the OTC adsorption on soils and extended the time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Specifically, the equilibrium adsorption of OTC by the two soils decreased by 19.41 and 15.32 %, respectively. These adsorption processes were effectively modelled by Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, linear, and Freundlich thermodynamic models. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that OTC adsorption onto soils was spontaneous and endothermic, with competitive interactions between biogas slurry-derived DOM and OTC molecules intensifying at higher DOM concentrations. The adsorption mechanisms were governed by both physical and chemical processes. Furthermore, the presence of Ca2+ and Na+ ions significantly inhibited OTC adsorption. These insights advanced our understanding of the fate and risk of OTC in soil environments influenced by DOM, contributing to more informed agricultural and environmental management practices.

Distribution characteristics of sulfonamide antibiotics between water and extracellular polymeric substances in municipal sludge

The interaction between extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in municipal sludge and antibiotics in wastewater is critical in wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and sludge management. Therefore, it is increasingly urgent to investigate the distribution coefficient (Log K) of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in EPS, particularly in sludge-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and aqueous phase systems. Herein, through balance experiments, the concentrations of SAs were determined using alkaline extraction EPS (AEPS) and alginate-like extracellular polymer (ALE) systems, and the Log KDOC values were determined. The results showed that the Log KDOC of AEPS was higher than that of ALE, which exhibited a negative KDOC value, indicating an inhibitory effect on dissolution. For the three SAs studied, the Log KDOC values were in the following order: sulfamethoxazole > sulfapyridine > sulfadiazine. This order can be attributed to the differing physicochemical properties, such as polarity, of the SAs. Three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectra and fitting results indicated a lack of aromatic proteins dominated by tryptophan and humus-like substances in ALE. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic interaction of aromatic proteins dominated by tryptophan was the main driving force in the binding process between AEPS and SAs.

Novel automatic de-scattering method for three-dimensional fluorescence spectra based on deep learning

Three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy is often plagued by scattering effects, mainly Rayleigh and Raman scattering, and thus must be pre-processed for de-scattering before spectral analysis. In this study, a new method based on deep learning was proposed to automaticly remove the scattering from fluorescence spectra. First, the semantic segmentation model Deeplabv3+ was used to realize the segmentation of the scattering region in the original fluorescence spectrum and compared with other segmentation models. The results show that the mean intersection over union (mIoU) of this model is 89.58 % and its Accuracy is 95.40 %, which are better than those of the other models. Then, the Globally and Locally Consistent Image Completion (GLCIC) network was used to repair the spectral energy of the scattering areas. Model effectiveness in scattering removal is evaluated using metrics such as mean absolute error, mean relative error, structural similarity, and peak signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, this study employs PARAFAC for component analysis of the spectra after scattering removal by the model, comparing them with actual components, all yielding correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. The results show that compared with the traditional scattering-removal method based on the mathematical model, the proposed method can automatically remove scattering areas in batch samples’ fluorescence spectra, without the need for manual parameter setting or other processes. This improves scattering removal efficiency, enhances the simplicity, and speed of fluorescence detection technology.

Characteristics of Soil Organic Carbon and Its Influencing Factors of Different Plant Communities in the Yellow River Delta

Changes in soil organic carbon （SOC） are of great importance to the evolution of soil quality. The distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon （SOC）, easily oxidizable organic carbon （EOC）, dissolved organic carbon （DOC）, and particulate organic carbon （POC） were investigated in the 0-50 cm soil layer of the Phragmites australis, Suaeda salsa, and Tamarix chinensis communities of the supratidal zone in the Yellow River Delta as the research subjects. Then, the composition and sources of soil dissolved organic matter （DOM） were analyzed based on the UV-vis spectroscopy, three-dimensional excitation emission matrix spectroscopy, and parallel factor analysis （PARAFAC）. Finally, the key factors affecting the characteristics of soil organic carbon and DOM fractions of different plant communities were finally revealed in combination with the physicochemical properties of the soil. The results showed that： ① Comparing different communities, the S. salsa community had the highest ω（SOC） at 7.53 g·kg-1, the T. chinensis community had the highest ω（DOC） at 0.98 g·kg-1, and the P. australis community had significantly higher ω（EOC） and ω（POC） than those of the S. salsa and T. chinensis communities at 1.47 g·kg-1 and 0.65 g·kg-1, respectively. The vertical distribution showed a tendency to decrease with deeper soil layers, except for POC concentration. ② The main components of soil DOM of the P. australis, S. salsa, and T. chinensis communities were humus, protein-like substances, and fulvic acid-like substances, of which exogenous components accounted for 55.80%, 56.41%, and 52.81% in the above communities, respectively. ③ Comparing different communities, the humification degree of the P. australis community was significantly higher than that of the S. salsa and T. chinensi communities, but its aromaticity and proportion of biological sources were significantly lower than those of the T. chinensi community. On the vertical profile of the soil, DOM aromaticity and humification degree gradually increased with the deepening of the soil layer, and the deeper soils were mainly dominated by small molecular weight DOM with a lower proportion of hydrophobic fraction. ④ Redundant analysis showed that N （P<0.01）, NO2--N （P<0.01）, and NH4+-N （P<0.05） were the key factors affecting the changes in soil organic carbon and DOM fractions.

Effect of microwaves combined with peracetic acid to improve the dewatering performance of residual sludge.

The activated sludge process plays a crucial role in modern wastewater treatment plants. During the treatment of daily sewage, a large amount of residual sludge is generated, which, if improperly managed, can pose burdens on the environment and human health. Additionally, the highly hydrated colloidal structure of biopolymers limits the rate and degree of dewatering, making mechanical dewatering challenging. This study investigates the impact and mechanism of microwave irradiation (MW) in conjunction with peracetic acid (PAA) on the dewatering efficiency of sludge. Sludge dewatering effectiveness was assessed through capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF). Examination of the impact of MW-PAA treatment on sludge dewatering performance involved assessing the levels of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), employing three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy. Findings reveal that optimal dewatering performance, with respective reductions of 91.22% for SRF and 84.22% for CST, was attained under the following conditions: microwave power of 600 W, reaction time of 120s, and PAA dosage of 0.25g/g MLSS. Additionally, alterations in both sludge EPS composition and floc morphology pre- and post-MW-PAA treatment underwent examination. The findings demonstrate that microwaves additionally boost the breakdown of PAA into •OH radicals, suggesting a synergistic effect upon combining MW-PAA treatment. These pertinent research findings offer insights into employing MW-PAA technology for residual sludge treatment.

Development of oriented multi-enzyme strengthens waste activated sludge disintegration and anaerobic digestion: Performance, components transformation and microbial communities

Low methane production and long retention time are the main dilemmas in current anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS). This work used WAS as only substrate to prepare oriented multi-enzyme (ME) that directly used for WAS pretreatment. Under the optimal parameters, the highest activities of protease and amylase in ME could respectively reach 16.5 U/g and 580 U/g, and the corresponding methane production attained 197 mLCH4/g VS, which was increased by 70.4% compared to blank group. It was found that ME pretreatment could strengthen WAS disintegration and organic matters dissolution, lead to the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was increased from the initial 486 mg/L to 2583 mg/L, and the corresponding volatile suspended solid (VSS) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were reduced by 27% and 73.8%, respectively. The results of three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that protein disintegration may be the critical step during the process of WAS hydrolysis with ME, of which the release of tyrosine-like proteins achieved the better biodegradability of WAS, while the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the formation of protein derivatives was the main harmful factor that could extend the lag phase of AD process. Microbial communities analysis further suggested that ME pretreatment facilitated the enrichment of acetogenic bacteria and acetotrophic methanogens, which caused the transition of the methanogenesis pathway from hydrogenotrophic to acetotrophic. This study is expected to furnish valuable insight for ME pretreatment on enhancing WAS disintegration and methane production.

Effects of reaction temperature and oxygen pressure on dissolved organic matter in hydrothermal reactions of municipal sludge: A comprehensive analysis

The impact of temperature and oxygen pressure on the basic performance of hydrothermal reactions and dissolved organic matter (DOM) was investigated. The results showed that total chemical oxygen demand and volatile suspended solids removal rate achieved a maximum of 72 % and 99 %, respectively, at 260 °C and 0.9 MPa oxygen pressure. Oxygen demonstrated a significant role in enhancing sludge particle dissolution. The interaction with temperature resulted in a complex trend for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm. Acetic acid and formic acid were identified as the prominent volatile fatty acids, with formic acid prevalent at lower temperatures, while acetic acid accumulated with increasing temperature and oxygen pressure. Three-dimensional excitation emission matrix and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was also employed to analyse DOM as over half of the DOC remained unknown. Parallel factor analysis indicated that three components with 8 peaks in total might represent a universal feature for fluorescent DOM in hydrothermal reaction solution. The deciphered data from FTICR-MS indicated that lipids and lignins as well as CHOS and CHON molecules were the main components of DOM. Meanwhile, condensed hydrocarbons were formed at high temperatures in wet oxidation runs. Moreover, identification of C19H32O3S, C18H30O3S and C18H26N2O3 as crucial intermediates further enriched the understanding of hydrothermal reactions in municipal sludge.
