An optimal transport approach for 3D electrical impedance tomography

Abstract This work solves the three-dimensional inverse boundary value problem with the quadratic Wasserstein distance (W2), which originates from the optimal transportation (OT) theory. The computation of the W2 distance on the manifold surface is boiled down to solving the generalized Monge-Ampère equation, whose solution is directly related to the gradient of the W2 distance. An efficient first-order method based on iteratively solving Poisson's equation is introduced to solve the fully nonlinear elliptic equation. Combining with the adjoint-state technique, the optimization framework based on the W2 distance is developed to solve the three-dimensional electrical impedance tomography (EIT) problem. The proposed method is especially suitable for severely ill-posed and highly nonlinear inverse problems. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our method improves the stability and outperforms the traditional regularization methods.

Space–time computations of exactly time-periodic flows past hydrofoils

The computation of periodic flows is typically conducted over multiple periods. First, a number of periods is used to develop periodic characteristics, and afterwards statistics are collected from averages over multiple periods. As a consequence, it is uncertain whether the numerical results are exactly time-periodic, and additionally, the time domain might be needlessly long. In this article, we circumvent these concerns by using a time-periodic function space. Consequently, the boundary conditions and solutions are exactly periodic. We employ the isogeometric analysis framework to achieve higher-order smoothness in both space and time. The discretization is performed using residual-based variational multiscale modeling and weak boundary conditions are adopted to enhance the accuracy near the moving boundaries of the computational domain. We enforce the time-periodic boundary condition within the isogeometric discretization spaces, which converts the two-dimensional time-dependent problem into a three-dimensional boundary value problem. Furthermore, we determine the boundary velocities of moving hydrofoils directly from the computational mesh and use a conservation methodology for force extraction. Application of the computational setup to heaving and pitching hydrofoils displays very accurate and exactly periodic results for lift and drag.

A large deformation gradient theory for glassy polymers by means of micromorphic regularization

AbstractCold forming of polycarbonate films results in the formation of shear bands in the necking zone. The numerical results obtained from standard viscoplastic material models exhibit mesh size dependency, requiring mathematical regularization. For this purpose, we present in this work a large deformation gradient theory for a viscoplastic isotropic material model published before. We extend our model to a micromorphic model by introducing a new micromorphic variable as an additional degree of freedom along with its first gradient. This variable represents a microequivalent plastic strain. The relation between the macroequivalent plastic strain and the micromorphic variable is accomplished by a micromorphic coupling modulus. This coupling forces proximity between the macro- and microvariables, leading to the targeted regularization effect. The micromorphic model is implemented as a three-dimensional initial boundary value problem in an in-house finite element tool. The analysis is performed for both uniaxial and biaxial specimens. The provided numerical examples show the ability of our model to regularize shear bands within the specimens and address the issue of localization.

The paper presents a new mathematical model for the solution of a static symmetric boundary-value problem for a layer weakened by a through hole with ends covered with a diaphragm. A new method based on a system of three singular integral equations has been developed and tested numerically. As a result of a high-precision numerical study, it was found that with an increase in the thickness of the layer, an increase in the relative circumferential stress occurs. With a decrease in one of the radii of the elliptical hole, an increase in the relative circumferential stress is also observed. The paper presents the respective dependency graphs. Spatial static boundary-value problems of mathematical physics for a layer with a non-circular cylindrical through hole have hardly been solved using the method of singular integral equations (SIE) despite the fact that numerous fundamental theoretical issues have been developed. Methods for the calculation of spectral characteristics are also absent. The paper provides an overview of the methods for solving these problems. A new mathematical model has been constructed, and a new method based on a system of three SIEs has been developed and tested numerically. As a result of a high-precision numerical study, it was found that with an increase in the thickness of the layer, an increase in the relative circumferential stress occurs. In the case of a circular hole, a shift of the maximum relative circumferential stress from the ends to the depth of the layer is observed. In the case of an elliptical hole, with a decrease in one of the radii, an increase in the relative circumferential stress is also observed. Stress state modeling of non-circular orthotropic hollow cylinders under different types of loading

Based on a spatial model of the linear theory of elasticity, using an unconventional approach of the reduction of the original three-dimensional boundary value problem described by a system of partial differential equations with variable coefficients to a one-dimensional boundary value problem for a system of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients, the problem of finding the dimensional stress of hollow elliptic orthotropic cylinders under the influence of various types of loading has been solved under certain boundary conditions at the orientation plane. Reducing the dimensionality of the original problem is carried out using analytical methods of separating variables in two coordinate directions in combination with the method of approximating functions by discrete Fourier series. The one-dimensional boundary value problem is solved by the stable numerical method of discrete orthogonalization.

A scalar three-dimensional boundary value problem of wave diffraction for the Helmholtz equation with transmission conditions that assume the presence of an infinitely thin material at the media interface is considered. Uniqueness and existence theorems for solutions are proved. The original problem is reduced to a system of integral equations over the media interface. Calculation formulas for the system of linear algebraic equations obtained after applying the collocation method and numerical results for solving the problem when the domain is a ball with certain transmission conditions are given.

Auto Mesh generation algorithm for the convex domain with the triangular elements

Mesh creation is one of the primary tasks in implementing the Finite Element Method (FEM) to solve two- and three-dimensional boundary value problems. However, the whole procedure becomes tedious and problematic when higher-order finite elements are employed to construct mesh and prepare corresponding element data. In this study, we strive to develop a versatile algorithm for discretizing the two-dimensional domain using linear, quadratic, and cubic triangular finite elements. The algorithm is developed based on n vertices (actual or more in number) that constitute the boundary of the domain, along with a computed (n+1)-th point such as the centroid. The algorithm, using this input, generates an initial mesh consisting of n triangular elements. Then, in every subsequent step, the algorithm increases the number of triangles in the mesh fourfold compared to the previous step. The algorithm we present here can employ (a) straight-sided (linear, quadratic, and cubic) triangular elements to generate the mesh for domains with polygonal boundaries and (b) both straight-sided and curved (quadratic and cubic) triangular elements with two straight sides and one curved side to generate meshes for domains with curved boundaries. Thus, the algorithm generates the desired meshes if the vertices are specified once at the initial step. Additionally, the inclusion of the mathematical expression of the curved boundary enables the algorithm to generate the fine mesh for the curved domain utilizing higher-order curved and straight-sided triangular elements. We also present a computer code in MATLAB incorporating the algorithm to create the mesh, prepare the element's data, and determine the element's connectivity.

A meshfree method for the solution of 2D and 3D second order elliptic boundary value problems in heterogeneous media

We propose a simple meshfree method for two-dimensional and three-dimensional second order elliptic boundary value problems in heterogeneous media based on equilibrated basis functions. The domain is discretized by a regular nodal grid, over which the degrees of freedom are defined. The boundary is also discretized by simply introducing some boundary points over it, independent from the domain nodes, granting the method the ability of application for arbitrarily shaped domains without the drawback of irregularity in the nodal grid. In heterogeneous media, the governing Partial Differential Equation (PDE) has non-constant coefficients for the partial derivatives, preventing Trefftz-based techniques to be applicable. The proposed method satisfies the PDE independent from the boundary conditions, as in Trefftz approaches. Meanwhile, by applying the weak form of the PDE instead of the strong form through weighted residual integration, the inconvenience of variable coefficients shall be resolved, since the bases will not need to analytically satisfy the PDE. The weighting in the weak form integrals is such that the boundary integrals vanish. The boundary conditions are thus collocated over the defined boundary points. Domain integrals break into algebraic combination of one-dimensional pre-evaluated integrals, thus omitting the numerical integration from the solution process. Each node corresponds to a local sub-domain called cloud. The overlap between adjacent clouds ensures integrity of the solution and its derivatives throughout the domain, an advantage with respect to C0 formulations.

Leveraging Full-Field Deformation Measurements in Computational Modeling of Damage

Abstract Advances in sensing and nondestructive evaluation methods have increased the interest in developing data-driven modeling and associated computational workflows for model-updating, in relation also to a variety of emerging digital twin applications. In this context, of particular interest in this investigation are transient effects that lead to or are caused by deformation instabilities, typically found in the cases of complex material behavior or interactions between material and geometry. In both cases, deformation localizations are observed which are typically also related to damage effects. This paper describes a novel framework to incorporate deformation data into a finite element model (FEM) that has been formulated using non-local mechanics and is capable of receiving such data and using it to describe the development of localizations. Specifically, experimentally measured full-field displacement data is used as an input in FEM as an ad-hoc boundary condition at any or every node in the body. To achieve this goal, a plasticity model which includes a spatially averaged non-local hardening parameter in the yield criterion is used to account for associated numerical instabilities and mesh dependence. Furthermore, the introduction of a length scale parameter into the constitutive law allows the connection between material behavior, geometry, and localizations. Additional steps remove the experimental data and evolve the computational predictions forward in time. Both one and three-dimensional boundary value problems are used to present results obtained by the proposed framework, while comments are made in terms of its potential uses.

Asymptotic Study of Plate Bending for a Strongly Orthotropic Materia

The technique of asymptotic averaging has been developed for three-dimensional partial differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients. For example, for the equations of elasticity theory. Then it was modified and applied to thin bodies in the form of plates (homogeneous or inhomogeneous, with even front surfaces or not), described by the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. In these cases, asymptotic solutions were constructed with respect to one small parameter, which is usually the ratio of the plate thickness to the characteristic plan size. The averaging technique in this case also reduces the dimension of the problem, i.e. reduces the three-dimensional boundary value problem to some two-dimensional one. In this article, we substantiate the application of the method to a problem with two small parameters in the case of a homogeneous thin, highly orthotropic plate bent by a surface load without taking into account body forces. The second small parameter is the ratio of the transverse elastic moduli to the moduli in the plan of the plate. It is shown that strong orthotropy is equivalent to an increase in the thickness of the equivalent plate. A procedure for obtaining the stress distribution over the plate thickness is described for three approximations. The first approximation gives the classical Kirchhoff theory, also called the Kirchhoff-Love theory, and the third approximation coincides with the Ambartsumian theory and allows one to find transverse shear and normal stresses. The consideration of cylindrical bending makes it possible to find solutions in the framework of classical plate theories in the form of formulas, as well as three approximations of the asymptotic theory, which simplifies comparison. Examples are considered when the averaged orthotropic moduli are taken for a single-layer fibrous composite.

On the Equilibrium of Nonthin Cylindrical Shells with a Dent

On the basis of the linear three-dimensional theory of elasticity, we consider the problem of equilibrium of nonthin isotropic cylindrical shells with dents under certain boundary conditions imposed on the end faces. To describe the cross section of the reference surface, we use the Pascal snail equation in polar coordinates. By the method of separation of variables, with the help of the approximation of functions by discrete Fourier series, we reduce the three-dimensional boundary-value problem to a one-dimensional problem, which is solved by the stable numerical method of discrete orthogonalization. We estimate the accuracy of the obtained solutions. The results of solving the problems are presented in the form of plots and tables.

Fast High Order Algorithm for Three-Dimensional Helmholtz Equation Involving Impedance Boundary Condition with Large Wave Numbers

Acoustic fields with impedance boundary conditions have high engineering applications, such as noise control and evaluation of sound insulation materials, and can be approximated by three-dimensional Helmholtz boundary value problems. Finite difference method is widely applied to solving these problems due to its ease of use. However, when the wave number is large, the pollution effects are still a major difficulty in obtaining accurate numerical solutions. We develop a fast algorithm for solving three-dimensional Helmholtz boundary problems with large wave numbers. The boundary of computational domain is discrete based on high-order compact difference scheme. Using the properties of the tensor product and the discrete Fourier sine transform method, the original problem is solved by splitting it into independent small tridiagonal subsystems. Numerical examples with impedance boundary conditions are used to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed algorithm. Results demonstrate that the algorithm has a fourth- order convergence in and -norms, and costs less CPU calculation time and random access memory.

On One Normal Boundary Value Problem of the Field Theory

One normal problem of the field theory on a plane for a system of Poisson equations is studied. This problem is one of implementations of the general approach to formulation of boundary value problems of the field theory, which is based on studying the kernels of trace operators and kernels of trace functionals, which are taken as the main space of desired solutions. A peculiarity of this problem is that one of the boundary conditions imposed on the desired solution is nonlocal in nature. The considered boundary condition nonlocality is due to the fact that the base space in which the solution of the problem is sought is the kernel of the regular trace functional in the Sobolev space. The need to supplement the problem on the one-dimensional cokernel of the above-mentioned functional, which arises in this case, determines the second boundary condition, which is local (pointwise) in nature. That is why, in the framework of the duality of the Sobolev space and its conjugate space, the solution to the problem is the pair (u, с), where с is a constant that compensates for the one-dimensional “defect” of the problem. It should be noted that the theory of boundary value problems for vector fields on a plane differs essentially from the theory of boundary value problems for three-dimensional vector fields. One of the reasons for the difficulties in formulating three-dimensional boundary value problems is that a number of important surfaces cannot be made parallel to each other, which rules out the possibility to consider “tangential” boundary value problems, that is, problems with boundary tangential fields. In this respect, the theory of boundary value problems of plane vector fields differs from the three-dimensional theory for the better. On the other hand, the fact that a formula that would interrelating the Laplace operator with first-order field theory operations is not available on a plane is an obstacle to identifying new non-standard boundary value problems for plane fields. Revealing of this interrelation is a separate issue, the solution of which leads to the concept of the trace of first-order field theory operators as a singular functional above the space of traces of functions from the first-order Sobolev space. Thus, boundary value problems for plane fields are a separate section of the general theory of field boundary value problems. One of the non-standard problems in the theory of plane vector fields, which contains non-local boundary conditions, is considered. A theorem for existence and uniqueness of a weak solution of the problem posed is formulated and proved. The proof of the theorem includes a few steps: using the Galerkin method, the existence of a solution to the equation is established; the passage to the limit is made, and the vector function u(x) is found; the number α is determined, and the uniqueness of the function u and the number α is established. The main result of the work is that the problem posed is correct in nature.

A Pseudo-Spectral Fourier Collocation Method for Inhomogeneous Elliptical Inclusions with Partial Differential Equations

Inhomogeneous elliptical inclusions with partial differential equations have aroused appreciable concern in many disciplines. In this paper, a pseudo-spectral collocation method, based on Fourier basis functions, is proposed for the numerical solutions of two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) inhomogeneous elliptic boundary value problems. We describe how one can improve the numerical accuracy by making some extra “reconstruction techniques” before applying the traditional Fourier series approximation. After the particular solutions have been obtained, the resulting homogeneous equation can then be calculated using various boundary-type methods, such as the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). Using Fourier basis functions, one does not need to use large matrices, making accrual computations relatively fast. Three benchmark numerical examples involving Poisson, Helmholtz, and modified-Helmholtz equations are presented to illustrate the applicability and accuracy of the proposed method.

Asymptotic Analysis of Boundary-Value Problems for the Laplace Operator with Frequently Alternating Type of Boundary Conditions

This work, which can be considered as a small monograph, is devoted to the study of twoand three-dimensional boundary-value problems for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with frequently alternating type of boundary conditions. The main goal is to construct asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the considered problems. Asymptotic expansions are constructed on the basis of original combinations of asymptotic analysis methods: the method of matching asymptotic expansions, the boundary layer method and the multi-scale method. We perform the analysis of the coefficients of the formally constructed asymptotic series. For strictly periodic and locally periodic alternation of the boundary conditions, the described approach allows one to construct complete asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. In the case of nonperiodic alternation and the averaged third boundary condition, sufficiently weak conditions on the alternation structure are obtained, under which it is possible to construct the first corrections in the asymptotics for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. These conditions include in consideration a wide class of different cases of nonperiodic alternation. With further, very serious weakening of the conditions on the structure of alternation, it is possible to obtain two-sided estimates for the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues of the perturbed problem. It is shown that these estimates are unimprovable in order. For the corresponding eigenfunctions, we also obtain unimprovable in order estimates for the rate of convergence.

A single-layer based numerical method for the slender body boundary value problem

Fluid flows containing dilute or dense suspensions of thin fibers are widespread in biological and industrial processes. To describe the motion of a thin immersed fiber, or to describe the forces acting on it, it is convenient to work with one-dimensional fiber centerlines and force densities rather than two-dimensional surfaces and surface tractions. Slender body theories offer ways to model and simulate the motion of immersed fibers using only one-dimensional data. However, standard formulations can break down when the fiber surface comes close to intersecting itself or other fibers. In this paper we introduce a numerical method for a recently derived three-dimensional slender body boundary value problem that can be stated entirely in terms of a one-dimensional distribution of forces on the centerline. The method is based on a new completed single-layer potential formulation of fluid velocity which removes the nullspace associated with the unmodified single layer potential. We discretize the model and present numerical results demonstrating the good conditioning and improved performance of the method in the presence of near-intersections. To avoid the modeling and numerical choices involved with free ends, we consider closed fibers.

Energy Method for the Elliptic Boundary Value Problems with Asymmetric Operators in a Spherical Layer

Three-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems arising in the mathematical modeling of quasi-stationary electric fields and currents in conductors with gyrotropic conductivity tensor in domains homeomorphic to the spherical layer are considered. The same problems are mathematical models of thermal conductivity or diffusion in moving or gyrotropic media. The operators of the problems in the traditional formulation are non-symmetric. New statements of the problems with symmetric positive definite operators are proposed. For the four boundary value problems the quadratic energy functionals, to the minimization of which the solutions of these problems are reduced, are constructed. Estimates of the obtained quadratic forms are made in comparison with the form appearing in the Dirichlet principle for the Poisson equation

Solution of some three-dimensional boundary value problems for thermoelastic bodies with voids

The paper considers a three-dimensional system of differential equations describing the thermoelastic static equilibrium of homogeneous isotropic materials with voids. In the Cartesian coordinate system the general solution of the mentioned system of equations is constructed using harmonic and metaharmonic functions. On the basis of the constructed general solution using the method of separation of variables boundary value problems for a semi-infinite prism and a rectangular parallelepiped are analytically solved. The corresponding boundary-contact problems for a multilayer rectangular parallelepiped are also considered.
