Application of micro‐CT to resolve textural properties and assess primary sedimentary structures of deep‐marine sandstones

AbstractOver the past decade, there has been growing interest in the sedimentological community to use micro X‐ray computed tomography to analyse microfacies in sediment cores. However, little attention has been paid to the application of micro‐computed tomography in lithified deposits, even though this can allow their texture to be characterised in three dimensions, providing key information about sedimentary structures. A novel application of micro‐computed tomography in lithified sediment‐gravity flow deposits is presented with the objective of characterising their internal 3D sedimentary structures. This technique is applied to three deep‐marine sandstones showing different compositional properties: Cretaceous Gosau Group (Austria), Eocene Hecho Group (Spain) and the Oligocene Annot Formation (France). From micro‐computed tomography data the size of particles and their distribution throughout the sample is reconstructed in 3D permitting a better visualisation of sedimentary textures. Particle distributions computed from micro‐computed tomography are similar to those computed from thin section image analysis, corroborating the reliability of the micro‐computed tomography to evaluate grain‐size trends. Micro‐computed tomography is complemented with micro‐X‐ray fluorescence and thin section petrographic analyses. In cases where mineral composition or grain size are homogeneous or matrix and grains have similar mineral composition, sedimentary structures do not appear visible from micro‐X‐ray fluorescence or thin section analyses. By separating particles based on their computed tomography density, it is possible to isolate the coarsest fraction, highlighting the sedimentary structures. This study demonstrates (i) the potential of micro‐computed tomography in analyses of sedimentary structures from outcrop data and (ii) the importance of the mineralogical composition and degree of grain sorting in assessing the origin of structureless deposits. Considering the importance of visualising sedimentary structures when interpreting depositional processes, micro‐computed tomography is a new and reliable tool to assess the physical properties of sandstones and to analyse their internal 3D sedimentary structures.

Simulating reservoir capillary pressure curves using image processing and classification machine learning algorithms applied to petrographic thin sections

Reservoir rock porosity and capillary pressure data are fundamental parameters to understand the physical properties of rocks. Porosity, which shows the rock's void fraction to its bulk volume, can be measured by s techniques such as He-porosimetry, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) analysis, point counting analysis, and image analysis. Image analysis has for many years been used to obtain relevant data from digital microscopic images. Segmentation of images is an important technique used to partition an image into distinctive components to extract useful data. When an image is segmented, it is simplified, making it easier to understand its component parts. In this research, two-dimensional (2D) rock thin section image processing is initially applied to determine porosity. To achieve this, the K-means clustering algorithm was used to automatically segment and measure the digital rock porosity. In this regard, one hundred and nine samples were selected from approximately one thousand 2D petrographic thin-section images of the Dorood Oilfield reservoir rocks and were digitally processed and evaluated. The porosity values estimated from the image analysis agree with the porosity derived from whole-rock core analysis with a correlation coefficient of 67 %. Moreover, petrographic studies distinguished five microfacies, which relate to lagoon, shoal, mid and outer ramp depositional environments associated with a carbonate homoclinal ramp. In addition. three distinct Hydraulic Flow Units(HFUs) were determined based on K-means clustering by applying the Elbow method. Based on those clusters, permeability was estimated from HFU porosity distributions with high correlation coefficient (R = 90 %). Pore-throat size distributions and Pc curves were then estimated from thin-section image analysis based on the Pittman equations for different mercury saturation percentages. The estimated Pc curves derived from image analyses show an acceptable correlation with SCAL-derived Pc curves. Comparison between RT/HFU and depositional settings show that RT1/HFU1 belongs to the lagoon and outer ramp depositional settings, RT2/HFU2 belongs to shoal and mid carbonate ramp environments and RT3/HFU3 belongs to a shoal environment.

Multifractal Analysis of Pore Structure and Evaluation of Deep-Buried Cambrian Dolomite Reservoir with Image Processing: A Case from Tarim Basin, NW China

Reservoir pore space assessment is of great significance for petroleum exploration and production. However, it is difficult to describe the pore characteristics of deep-buried dolomite reservoirs with the traditional linear method because these rocks have undergone strong modification by tectonic activity and diagenesis and show significant pore space heterogeneity. In this study, 38 dolostone samples from 4 Cambrian formations of Tarim Basin in NW China were collected and 135 thin section images were analyzed. Multifractal theory was used for evaluation of pore space heterogeneity in deep-buried dolostone based on thin section image analysis. The physical parameters, pore structure parameters, and multifractal characteristic parameters were obtained from the digital images. Then, the relationships between lithology and these parameters were discussed. In addition, the pore structure was classified into four categories using K-means clustering analysis based on multifractal parameters. The results show that the multifractal phenomenon generally exists in the pore space of deep-buried dolomite and that multifractal analysis can be used to characterize the heterogeneity of pore space in deep-buried dolomite. For these samples, multifractal parameters, such as αmin, αmax, ΔαL, ΔαR, Δf, and AI, correlate strongly with porosity but only slightly with permeability. However, the parameter Δα, which is usually used to reveal heterogeneity, does not show an obvious link with petrophysical properties. Of dolomites with different fabrics, fine crystalline dolomite and medium crystalline dolomite show the best petrophysical properties and show significant differences in multifractal parameters compared to other dolomites. More accurate porosity estimations were obtained with the multifractal generalized fractal dimension, which provides a new method for porosity prediction. The various categories derived from the K-means clustering analysis of multifractal parameters show distinct differences in petrophysical properties. This proves that reservoir evaluation and pore structure classification can be accurately performed with the K-means clustering analysis method based on multifractal parameters of pore space in deep-buried dolomite reservoirs.

Quantitative Analysis of Historic Mortars by Digital Image Analysis of Thin Sections

Abstract In restoration work, the compatibility between old and new building material is the key point for sustainable repair of buildings or monuments. Consequently, conservation scientists are looking for an alternative method to the traditional procedures to determine the aggregate grading curve and the binder/aggregate-ratio of the historic material. The problem of using the traditional methods is the frequent major intervention in an existing building. These destructive methods are not allowed. Whereas, to get information about the historic mortar, a new technique, the digital image analysis (DIA), is applied in this paper. Moreover, small amounts of the historic material have already been prepared as thin sections and analysed with a microscope. Modern microscopy techniques allow investigations of quantitative and qualitative composition of historic material. Incentive of this work was to get all the required information to recreate the historic mortar by using the DIA with an open source program only at one thin section. In addition, to examine the accuracy and the significance of the DIA, all results were compared with a known mixture, and in a second test series, the results of the DIA were compared with the traditional methods. The results show that the DIA of thin sections of a historic mortar is highly effective for analysing decisive factors like the binder/aggregate-ratio and the grading curve of the aggregates. Furthermore, it is possible to analyse the mortar only by having one thin section using an open source program ImageJ. Especially in the case of carbonate rock as aggregate, DIA is the only method to analyse these characteristics of a mortar.

Pore morphology reveals interaction of biological and physical processes for structure formation in soils of the semiarid Argentinean Pampa

In order to obtain baseline values for the evaluation of soil degradation, the biological and physical quality of petrocalcic Paleustolls, of the calcrete plains of the Semiarid Region Pampa of Argentina, soils under agricultural (Ag) and native vegetation (NV) were selected, with the same clay content, in which three depth layers (upper, middle and lower) were sampled. Total organic carbon and its fractions, total nitrogen, soil texture, aggregate size distribution, mean weight diameter, aggregate volumetric weight, maximum bulk density, susceptibility to compaction, critical moisture content, hydraulic conductivity, infiltration, penetration resistance were determined. In addition, the size, distribution and shape of the macropores were measured through image analysis of thin sections. As biological indicators, respiration, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen were determined. Soils under Ag use had lower carbon and nitrogen content, they also had lower total porosity and macroporosity compared to the NV soils, and the predominant shape of macropores was round. This change in the distribution and shape of the pores led to lower rates of infiltration and lower hydraulic conductivity, higher bulk density and greater resistance to penetration. The round macropores were found to be negatively correlated with organic carbon, total porosity and macroporosity and positively with indicators associated with compaction (maximum bulk density, susceptibility to compaction and bulk density). Compacted soils with lower total porosity and higher proportion of round macropores presented higher volumetric weight of the aggregates. The Ag soils with lower carbon and nitrogen content also had lower microbial biomass carbon and respiration, compared to the soils under natural vegetation, and the variables associated with compaction were negatively related to biological properties. The suggested minimum set of indicators included organic carbon, total porosity, mean weight diameter, macropores, penetration resistance, aggregates volumetric weight of 2–3-mm, elongated macropores, respiration and microbial biomass carbon. All of them were strongly related to indicators that reflect the physical, chemical and biological functionality of the soil that sustain soil-based ecosystem services. Degradation and rehabilitation processes might be governed by the feedback between pore formation and microbial activity, underpinning the importance of perennial crops and cover crops for providing substrate supply to the soil biota for sustainable agricultural systems.

Improving reservoir rock classification in heterogeneous carbonates using boosting and bagging strategies: A case study of early Triassic carbonates of coastal Fars, south Iran

An accurate reservoir characterization is a crucial task for the development of quantitative geological models and reservoir simulation. In the present research work, a novel view is presented on the reservoir characterization using the advantages of thin section image analysis and intelligent classification algorithms. The proposed methodology comprises three main steps. First, four classes of reservoir intervals are defined using a limited number of porosity and permeability values obtained from the core plugs of Kangan and Dalan formations. Then seven micro-scale features including distribution of pore types (interparticle, interaparticle, moldic, and vuggy), pore complexity, and cement distribution as well as textural characteristics are extracted from thin section images. Finally, the features extracted from each photomicrograph and its corresponding reservoir class are used as the training data for several intelligent classifiers including decision trees, discriminant analysis functions, support vector machines, K-nearest neighbor models and two ensemble algorithms, named bagging and boosting. The relationship between the micro-scale features and the reservoir classes was studied. Performance of all classifiers is evaluated using the concepts of accuracy, precision, recall, and harmonic average. The results obtained showed that the bagging decision tree delivered the best performance among the models and improved the accuracy of simple models up to 7.7% compared with the best single classifier.

Mineralogical, petrographic and physical-mechanical study of Roman construction materials from the Maritime Theatre of Hadrian's Villa (Rome, Italy)

This paper presents the study of various Roman materials used in the construction of the Maritime Theatre, one of the main buildings in the Hadrian’s Villa complex, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tivoli (Rome, Italy), dating to the first half of the II century A.D. The plaster layers (arriccio and intonachino) and overlying original Roman paintings that form the concave wall of the portico as well as some bedding mortars of the pyramidal stone elements (i.e. cubilia) of the circular masonry have been studied in particular. In addition, the acid volcanic rocks of the cubilia have been investigated, aiming to understand their state of alteration and geological origin.By mineralogical-petrographic microscopy (OM), diffractometry (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, Point Load Tests (PLT), helium pycnometry, and particle size analysis, the composition and granulometric distribution of the aggregate, type and characteristics of the binder, and various physical-mechanical properties (density, porosity, water absorption, imbibition and saturation indices, mechanical resistance) of mortars and stones were defined. In addition, through digital image analysis of thin sections, the binder/aggregate ratio and some geometric characteristics of the aggregates (e.g. circularity) were determined.The research aims to improve the knowledge of the constructive technologies of the Maritime Theatre through the analysis of its materials.

Recent sedimentation in three adjacent fjord-lakes on the Québec North Shore (eastern Canada): facies analysis, laminae preservation, and potential for varve formation

This paper analyzes short gravity cores sampled along transects in three adjacent deep fjord-lakes (lakes Pentecôte, Walker, and Pasteur) on the Québec North Shore, eastern Canada, to evaluate the distribution of laminated sediments and potential for varve formation. Facies analysis based on lithological description, digital photos, CT-scan images, and bathymetric data allowed for the identification of four main sediment facies, namely laminated sediments, partially laminated sediments, bioturbated sediments, and massive sediments. Direct evidence that Lake Walker undergoes thermal stratification was monitored from 2014 to 2016. Mean sedimentation rates and sedimentation fluxes of postglacial sediments in the distal basin of the three studied lakes are ≤0.12 cm a−1 and 0.03–0.16 g cm−2 a−1, respectively, based on 210Pb, 137Cs, and AMS radiocarbon dating. On the basis of thin section image analysis and 210Pb (CIC) chronology model, Lake Pentecôte contains mainly massive, partially laminated sediments, while Lake Pasteur contains partially laminated sediments and non-annual varve-like sediments. However, Lake Walker contains laminated sediments that are likely varves. The increased potential for laminae preservation observed in Lake Walker compared to lakes Pentecôte and Pasteur is associated with more favourable morphological characteristics including higher relative depth, mean depth, maximum depth, and topographic exposure.

Matrix permeability of reservoir rocks, Ngatamariki geothermal field, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand

The Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) hosts 23 geothermal fields, seven of which are currently utilised for power generation. Ngatamariki geothermal field (NGF) is one of the latest geothermal power generation developments in New Zealand (commissioned in 2013), located approximately 15 km north of Taupo. Samples of reservoir rocks were taken from the Tahorakuri Formation and Ngatamariki Intrusive Complex, from five wells at the NGF at depths ranging from 1354 to 3284 m. The samples were categorised according to whether their microstructure was pore or microfracture dominated. Image analysis of thin sections impregnated with an epoxy fluorescent dye was used to characterise and quantify the porosity structures and their physical properties were measured in the laboratory. Our results show that the physical properties of the samples correspond to the relative dominance of microfractures compared to pores. Microfracture-dominated samples have low connected porosity and permeability, and the permeability decreases sharply in response to increasing confining pressure. The pore-dominated samples have high connected porosity and permeability, and lower permeability decrease in response to increasing confining pressure. Samples with both microfractures and pores have a wide range of porosity and relatively high permeability that is moderately sensitive to confining pressure. A general trend of decreasing connected porosity and permeability associated with increasing dry bulk density and sonic velocity occurs with depth; however, variations in these parameters are more closely related to changes in lithology and processes such as dissolution and secondary veining and re-crystallisation. This study provides the first broad matrix permeability characterisation of rocks from depth at Ngatamariki, providing inputs for modelling of the geothermal system. We conclude that the complex response of permeability to confining pressure is in part due to the intricate dissolution, veining, and recrystallization textures of many of these rocks that lead to a wide variety of pore shapes and sizes. While the laboratory results are relevant only to similar rocks in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, the relationships they highlight are applicable to other geothermal fields, as well as rock mechanic applications to, for example, aspects of volcanology, landslide stabilisation, mining, and tunnelling at depth.

Risk and benefit of diffraction in Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence mapping

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence mapping (μ-EDXRF) is a fast and non-destructive method for chemical quantification and therefore used in many scientific fields. The combination of spatial and chemical information is highly valuable for understanding geological processes. Problems occur with crystalline samples due to diffraction, which appears according to Bragg's law, depending on the energy of the X-ray beam, the incident angle and the crystal parameters. In the spectra these peaks can overlap with element peaks suggesting higher element concentrations. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of diffraction, the possibility of diffraction removal and potential geoscientific applications for X-ray mapping. In this work the μ-EDXRF M4 Tornado from Bruker was operated with a Rh-tube and polychromatic beam with two SDD detectors mounted each at ±90° to the tube. Due to the polychromatic beam the Bragg condition fits for several mineral lattice planes. Since diffraction depends on the angle, it is shown that a novel correction approach can be applied by measuring from two different angles and calculating the minimum spectrum of both detectors gaining a better limit of quantification for this method. Furthermore, it is possible to use the diffraction information for separation of differently oriented crystallites within a monomineralic aggregate and obtain parameters like particle size distribution for the sample, as it is done by thin section image analysis in cross-polarized light. Only with μ-EDXRF this can be made on larger samples without preparation of thin sections.

Permeability estimation based on thin-section image analysis and 2D flow modeling in grain-dominated carbonates

Permeability estimation based on image analysis is a good alternative when an intact core-plug is not available for laboratory measurement. While there is much research on permeability estimation from 2D and 3D images or models, accurately estimating permeability for carbonates, a type of rock with substantial heterogeneity, is still challenging. In this study, a method for permeability estimation based on thin-section image analysis and 2D permeability simulation is developed for grain-dominated carbonates based on semi-theoretical analysis of 2D and 3D permeability (K2D and K3D) relationship. The mathematical expression of the K2D/K3D is examined and validated with a grainstone carbonate sample, for which both K2D and K3D were obtained through permeability simulation based on micro-CT images. The method was applied to 24 grain-dominated carbonate samples collected from different locations with a large variation in rock textures and fabrics and a broad range of permeability from 0.1 mD to 3200 mD. Representativeness of the thin section and the correct determination of the effective pores are the key for accurate estimation. The estimated permeability was compared to the measured value, and 92% of the results are within a factor of ±5, and 46% are with a factor of ±2. Potential sources of systematic error are discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Pore-scale observation of deposit within the gravel matrix of a vertical flow constructed wetland

ABSTRACTLifespan and well-operation of French vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) depend on how the organic deposit forms and evolves within filter media. This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of thin section methods application to VFCW. Unfortunately, constructed wetland scientists are currently missing tools to observe how deposit physically occupies pore space. Thin sections allow a direct and undisturbed observation of filter media and deposit. Undisturbed samples were taken from the surface of an experimental VFCW. Water was exchanged with a solvent before resin impregnation to preserve the sample structure. Several thin sections were successfully produced. Results highlight that deposit significantly reduces pore space. It forms a structured media crossed by large channels which can participate to fast gravity-driven flow and media oxygenation. The deposit structure seemed also made of a large bundle of small pores less than 100 µm in radius. They can effectively store water by capillarity and provide a large surface for potential pollutant adsorption. An image analysis of thin sections provided hints at understanding the structuration of the porous media linked to organic matter deposition.

Application of Image Analysis to Identify Quartz Grains in Heavy Aggregates Susceptible to ASR in Radiation Shielding Concrete.

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is considered as a potential aging-related degradation phenomenon that might impair the durability of concrete in nuclear containments. The objective of this paper is the application of digital analysis of microscopic images to identify the content and size of quartz grains in heavy mineral aggregates. The range of investigation covered magnetite and hematite aggregates, known as good absorbers of gamma radiation. Image acquisition was performed using thin sections observed in transmitted cross-polarized light with λ plate. Image processing, consisting of identification of ferrum oxide and epoxy resin, and the subsequent application of a set of filtering operations resulted in an adequate image reduction allowing the grain size analysis. Quartz grains were classified according to their mean diameter so as to identify the reactive range. Accelerated mortar bar tests were performed to evaluate the ASR potential of the aggregates. The SiO2 content in the heavyweight aggregates determined using the image analysis of thin sections was similar to XRF test result. The content of reactive quartz hematite was 2.7%, suggesting that it would be prone to ASR. The expansion test, according to ASTM C1260, confirmed the prediction obtained using the digital image analysis.

Estimating Properties of Unconsolidated Petroleum Reservoirs using Image Analysis

Unconsolidated petroleum reservoirs are non-crystalline rock and include tight gas sands, heavy oil, and bitumen rich sands. These can be both near surface and at depth. This is a “methods” paper which discusses the use of thin section image analysis to obtain reservoir properties from unconsolidated sand reservoirs. A case study was carried out on samples from the Upper McMurray Member of the Athabasca Oil Sands in Canada. Using petrographic image analysis, porosity and permeability were obtained from thin sections from selected regions of interest (ROI). This was accomplished by generating 2D grain and void architecture models from binary images.Porosity and averaged particle size distribution for the coarse components or sand size components were derived directly from oil sand thin sections, whereas permeability was calculated. Values of porosity and permeability obtained using this method were found to be in typical value ranges of those obtained by conventional methods, including petrophysical and core analysis. The application of image analysis to sand reservoirs, such as oil sands, is a rapid and economical method of estimating reservoir properties, especially within regions of interest, and there is the added advantage of direct observation.

New data on the longevity of coastal cod Gadus morhua Linnaeus, 1758 in the White Sea

The cod, Gadus morhua, is a common and abundant demersal fish in the White Sea coastal zone. The published data on the maximum age of White Sea cod still requires additional documentation, because some authors have noted difficulties in age determination by otoliths of large specimens. To obtain accurate data on the longevity of this species in the White Sea, an image analysis of thin-sections of otoliths was made for age estimation. Research surveys in the Chupa Inlet and adjacent waters of the Kandalaksha Bay were conducted in June to August from 2007 to 2013. The five largest specimens of a total of 3564 captured fish were selected for age determination. Age of these largest individuals ranged between 7 and 12 years, total length and weight varied from 60.2 to 77.0 cm and from 2.4 to 6.1 kg, respectively. According to the data, maximal White Sea cod longevity is greater than in previously published data, and demonstrates similar longevity to conspecifics from the Baltic and North seas, whereas its life cycle is much shorter than cod from the Northeast Arctic, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador stocks.

Pedogenesis in mine tails affects macroporosity, hydrological properties, and pollutant flow

Mining activities take a direct impact on the environment, particularly when this activity is focused on metal-ore exploitation. Abandoned metal mine areas contain different types of residues from ore-processing operations that are typically characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals. One consequence is the generation of acid-mine drainage, caused by the oxidation and hydrolysis of metal sulphides. Mine tail soils have been studied under several points of view, but not on how crack formation affects their properties and functioning, before irreversible hardening. The Cartagena–La Union mining district is one of the more ancient Spanish mining regions. This region is placed at the south-eastern part of Spain, and contains one of the largest lead and zinc ore deposits in South Europe, which was exploited for Au, Ag, Pb, Zn, Fe and Cu from the Phoenician and Carthaginian times. The aim of this research work was to characterize the pedogenesis that occurred in mine tailings of different age and properties, to highlight the physical and hydrological changes that occurred as a consequence of pedogenesis, and their consequences on the environmental pollution risk. Soil profile morphology was studied in the field likewise the surficial pattern of cracks, shear strength, bulk density, and erosion. Laboratory analyses were conducted to characterize physical, chemical, elemental, mineralogical, and hydrological differences between the soil mass in the macro aggregates and in the fissures. Macroporosity was studied through image analysis of thin sections of undisturbed soil samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on the clay fraction. Studied soils resulted strongly polluted, especially as for Zn, Pb, Cd, Cl, Mn, and Ni and were classified as different kinds of Spolic Technosol. Crack formation significantly affected shear strength, bulk density, macroporosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and element distribution. Gully and tunnel erosion was also driven by crack formation. The mineralogy of the clay fraction revealed that smectites are present, favouring crack opening. Crack formation deeply affected soil features and behaviour, namely hydrological properties and flow of pollutants, which in turn condition environmental health and possible soil stabilization and reclamation strategies.

An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the usual visual inspection technique. Therefore, it can be considered an extremely useful tool for calibrating predictive models for arrangements of granular media based on computer simulations.

Micromorphological analysis on the influence of the soil mineral composition on short-term aggregation in semi-arid Mediterranean soils .

Aggregation in soils is the result of the interaction of the soil organic components and soil minerals. The reactivity of the mineral phase is acknowledged to interfere with aggregates formation and stabilization, but its influence on aggregation in semi-arid Mediterranean soils remains mostly unknown. In this study, we used micromorphological analysis of aggregates formed in a 28-d incubation in two agricultural soils differing only in the composition of the mineral phase in the upper Ap horizon (a carbonate-depleted Palexeralf with 21.5% clay, and a contiguous carbonate-rich Typic Calcixerept with 20.9% clay before decarbonation which was reduced to 10.4% upon decarbonation). The two soils belong to the same agricultural field and have had similar management for decades. Soil samples were completely disaggregated into their fractions < 250 μm, and incubated with fresh organic matter to stimulate re-aggregation. Macroaggregates (> 2 mm) formed during the incubation were separated at days 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 and used to prepare thin sections. Macroaggregates were more abundant at day 3, and then decreased in number in the two soils, which indicates a dependency between organic matter decomposition and stable macroaggregates formation. They contained a greater proportion of smaller aggregates in the decarbonated soil. Micromorphological analysis revealed significant differences in the fabric and physical characteristics of these macroaggregates, in which bonds among primary particles were observed to be led by clays in the Palexeralf while the coarse fraction appeared embedded in a micromass with crystallitic b-fabric corresponding to carbonates in the Calcixerept. This resulted in a more compact fabric and less porosity in macroaggregates in the Calcixerept. Image analysis of thin sections was used to quantify and characterize the pore system of macroaggregates. Porosity (pores > 20 μm) was more than double (36.9% for 15.6%) within macroaggregates in the decarbonated soil, with more elongated pores. Although in both soils most pores were 20 to 150-μm in equivalent diameter, some porosity > 150 μm was observed only in macroaggregates from the decarbonated soil. These observations allow hypothesizing that the mechanisms responsible for aggregates stabilization and/or formation are different in the two soils, and that they result in different physical characteristics of soil aggregates. The implications of such differences on air and water flow rates within aggregates, and thus on the soil microbial activity and organic matter decomposition, as well as on soil erodibility, need to be studied and accounted for when evaluating the effect of soil management and other practices on soil quality in semi-arid Mediterranean agrosystems.
