Thermal Expansion of Alkaline-Earth Borates

The thermal expansion of four alkaline-earth borates, namely Ca3B2O6 (0D), CaB2O4 (1D), Sr3B14O24 (2D) and CaB4O7 (3D), has been studied by in situ high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction (HTXRD). Strong anisotropy of thermal expansion is observed for the structures of Ca3B2O6 (0D) and CaB2O4 (1D) built up from BO3 triangles only; these borates exhibit maximal expansion perpendicular to the BO3 plane, i.e., along the direction of weaker bonding in the crystal structure. Layered Sr3B14O24 (2D) and framework CaB4O7 (3D) built up from various B–O groups expand less anisotropically. The thermal properties of the studied compounds compared to the other alkaline-earth borates are summarized depending on the selected structural characteristics like anion dimensionality, residual charge per one polyhedron (BO3 BO4), cationic size and charge, and structural complexity. For the first time, these dependencies are established as an average for both types of polyhedra (triangle and tetrahedron) occurring in the same structure at the same time. The most common trends identified from these studies are as follows: (i) melting temperature decreases with the dimensionality of the borate polyanion, and more precisely, as the residual charge per one polyhedron (triangle or tetrahedron) decreases; (ii) volumetric expansion decreases while the degree of anisotropy increases weakly when the residual charge decreases; (iii) both trends (i) and (ii) are most steady within borates built by triangles only, while borates built by both triangles and tetrahedra show more scattered values.

Oxoborates of the ludwigite group: Natural and mineral-like compounds as prospective materials

Research subject. Natural oxoborates of the ludwigite group, including azoproite, ludwigite, and vonsenite. Their empirical formulas based on five oxygen atoms have the following form: azoproite (Mg1.81Fe2+0.19)∑2.00(Fe3+0.36Ti0.26Mg0.26Al0.12)∑1.00 O2(BO3), ludwigite (Mg1.69Fe2+0.30Mn2+0.01)Σ2.00(Fe3+0.90Al0.07Mg0.02Sn0.01)Σ1.00O2(BO3) and vonsenite (Fe2+1.86Mg0.13)∑1.99 (Fe3+0.92Mn2+0.05Sn4+0.02Al0.02)∑1.01O2(BO3). Aim. To establish the relationship between the composition, crystal structure, and thermal behavior (293–1373 K) of the minerals. Materials and methods. Ludwigite was collected at the Iten’yurginskoe tin skarn deposit; vonsenite was collected at the Titovskoe magnesium-skarn boron deposit; azoproite was collected at magnesian skarns of the Tazheran alkaline massif. The methods of single crystal X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were used. Results. Low-charge cations (Fe2+, Fe2.5+, Mg2+) tend to occupy the M(1)–M(3) sites, and high-charge cations (Fe3+, Al3+, Ti4+, Sn4+) generally occupy the M(4) site. Azoproite is characterized by the highest melting temperature Tm > 1650 K. Due to the low Fe2+ content, azoproite does not undergo solid-phase decomposition across the investigated temperature range. The melting point of ludwigite exceeds 1582 K, which is due to the high Mg content; as a result of the Fe2+ → Fe3+ oxidation, it gradually decomposes with the formation of hematite, warwickite, and magnetite. The temperatures of oxidation and solid-phase decomposition in the Fe2+-rich vonsenite are approximately 100 K lower than those in ludwigite. The melting point of vonsenite is 1571 K. All the minerals are characterized by a weak degree of thermal expansion anisotropy. The main contribution to the thermal expansion anisotropy is due to the preferred orientation of the [BO3]3– triangles. Conclusions. The thermal properties of the oxoborates depend on their chemical composition. It was established that Tm increases with an increase in the Mg and Ti4+ content, and decreases with an increase in the Fe2+ content. The Fe2+ → Fe3+ oxidation is observed when the FeO component in the minerals exceeds 10 wt %, which leads to the solid-phase decomposition starting at temperatures of about 500–600 K. The values of the 293KαV volume thermal expansion of ludwigite and azoproite are comparable, while the largest values were observed for vonsenite. This is associated with the largest average bond lengths, primarily those of <Fe2+–O>6.

Negative thermal expansion of β-Rb<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>

Research subject. The low-temperature modification of β-Rb2SO4 sulfate (Pmcn). Aim. Low-temperature study of the thermal expansion of β-Rb2SO4 by high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction in comparison with the crystal structure, as well as interpretation of the anisotropy of β-Rb2SO4 thermal expansion. Materials and Method. Powder X-ray diffraction and high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction. Results. The thermal expansion of β-Rb2SO4 sulfate was studied for the first time using low-temperature powder thermal X-ray diffraction in comparison with the crystal structure. The phase composition was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The thermal expansion of β-Rb2SO4 is practically isotropic. Across the temperature range from –177 to –140°C, the sulfate experiences negative thermal expansion. A further increase in temperature leads to a change in its thermal expansion, which becomes positive. It is proposed to consider the crystal structure of β-Rb2SO4 sulfate as a mixed framework of [RbSO4]–1, which, in turn, consists of fundamental building units (microblocks) of Rb(SO4)6. Across the temperature range from room temperature to –100°C, the maximum expansion of β-Rb2SO4 sulfate occurs along the a axis. The minimum thermal expansion is observed along the c-axis, along the columns consisting of microblocks (αa = 65.4(3)∙10–6°C–1, αb = 59.7(2)∙10–6°C–1, αc = 58.6(2)∙10–6°C–1 at +25°C). In the temperature range from –177 to –140°C, thermal expansion is negative in all three directions (αa = –10.3(3)∙10–6°C–1, αb = –8.6(2)∙10–6°C–1, αc = –9.7(2)∙10–6°C–1 at –170°C). Conclusion. The thermal expansion of β-Rb2SO4 sulfate in the low-temperature range (from –177 to –25°C) was studied for the first time, its structural interpretation was performed. A comparison was given with the thermal expansion of isostructural β-K2SO4.

High temperature structure and vibrational properties of ScXO4 (X= V5+ and P5+): A comparative study

ScVO4 and ScPO4 represent the zircon (xenotime) type structures with smallest trivalent cations, and that enable them to host both transition metal and rare-earth ions for applied optical materials. Thus, their crystal chemistry and thermophysical properties becomes relevance for their application in non-ambient conditions. In this report, high temperature crystal chemistry and vibrational properties of ScVO4 and ScPO4, as observed from in situ high temperature powder XRD and Raman spectroscopic studies, are reported. The comparative analyses of the results indicate that, though both are isostructural, they show drastically different thermal expansion behavior. In case of ScVO4, the c-axis shows significantly larger expansion compared to a-axis, while in ScPO4 the thermal expansion along and a and c-axes are more or less similar. At ambient condition, the thermal expansion anisotropy in ScPO4 and ScVO4 are 1.02 and 3.97, respectively. Additionally, ScPO4 shows relatively lower coefficient of volume thermal expansion compared to ScVO4, (αv = 23.64 × 10−6 K−1 for ScPO4 and 26.09 × 10−6 K−1 for ScVO4), and is contributed by the expansion of ScO8 units in their structures. The thermal expansion coefficients of ScO8 unit in ScPO4 and ScVO4 are 36.3 × 10−6 K−1 and 39.1 × 10−6 K−1, respectively. Temperature evolution of Raman modes indicates weakening of all the modes, except a symmetric stretching mode, with increasing temperature. The anharmonic analyses of the Raman modes indicate that implicit contributions in ScVO4 and ScPO4 are appreciably higher than the explicit contributions, and hence the changes in mode wavenumbers with volume play dominating role in governing their thermal expansion behaviors. Further, it is concluded that ScPO4 is characterized by more or less like rigid unit cell compared to ScVO4.

Crystal chemistry, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, optical absorption, and luminescence study of Fe-dominant sogdianite

Abstract Fe-dominant sogdianite, a cyclosilicate compound with the chemical formula (Fe3+ 0.74Zr0.64Ti0.46 Al0.15)(□1.02Na0.98)K[Li3Si12O30], was studied. The investigation involved a comprehensive analysis of the mineral sample, including crystal-chemical analysis, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, optical absorption, and luminescence study. Crystallographic site populations were determined through single crystal structure refinement and electron probe microanalysis. The thermoelastic behavior of a powder was studied using in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (30–750 °C). Notably, no phase transition was detected; sogdianite exhibited anisotropic thermal expansion. The first time study of vibrational spectra and spectral bands assigning were performed. The electronic transitions in d 5-ion impurities of sogdianite were studied using optical absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. The origin of pink color and luminescence of sogdianite was clarified. The broad spectral bands in the visible UV spectral region are responsible for the pink color exhibited by sogdianite and could be attributed to d–d transitions occurring in Fe3+ ions.

A thermo-mechanical, viscoelasto-plastic model for semi-crystalline polymers exhibiting one-way and two-way shape memory effects under phase change

A finite strain phenomenological model is developed to simulate the shape memory behavior of semi-crystalline polymers under thermo-mechanical loading. The polymer is considered to be a composite of crystalline and amorphous phases with constant volume fractions. While the amorphous phase is stable, the crystalline one is considered to change phase with temperature. Therefore, the crystalline phase is considered further to be composed of two phases, whose volume fractions are controlled by a temperature and strain dependent function: the melted phase which is soft, and the crystallized phase which is stiff.A pressure dependent viscoelasto-plastic behavior is considered for the constitutive model of the different phases. In addition to pressure dependent plasticity, additional deformation measures are applied to the crystalline phase to model temporary (imperfect shape fixity) and permanent (imperfect shape recovery) deformations in a thermo-mechanical loading cycle. Formulating a compressible plastic flow during the phase changes yields the possibility to capture both one-way and two-way shape memory effects. As a consequence, the load-dependent and anisotropic thermal expansion observed experimentally in semi-crystalline polymers during phase change is naturally captured.The model is validated within a test campaign performed on nano-composite having a semi-crystalline polymer as a base material. It is shown that the model gives close results with the tests and it is able to capture the shape fixity and shape recovery behaviors of the polymer, for both one-way and two-way shape memory effects.

Light-driven anisotropy of 2D metal-organic framework single crystal for repeatable optical modulation

Structural transformations of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) go through a complex energy landscape with multiple intermediate states. Although the transformations allow controlling the functional properties of the MOFs, an imbalance between MOF flexibility and rigidity sets a fundamental barrier to achieving fast and multiple transformations. Here, we study the stimuli-responsive structural transformation in a 2D MOF assembled from paddle-wheel secondary building units joined by a semi-flexible organic ligand with 1,2,4-triazole and carboxylate groups with a rigid adamantane cage between them. The structure results in a distinctive combination of MOF flexibility and rigidity, thus, facilitating a continuous transformation driven by laser light. We reveal the laser-induced anisotropic thermal expansion nature of such transformation, initiating optical changes of the 2D MOF. The latter is utilized for fast and highly repeatable optical modulation of over 10,000 cycles. The endurance of such a 2D MOF-based optical modulator during 1 year of storage at ambient conditions paves the way to design tunable and robust MOFs for diverse applications.

Structural Origins of the Anisotropic Thermal Expansion of BINOL Crystals

AbstractMeasurement of the unit cell of (R)-BINOL over a 200° temperature range (300–100 K) reveals an anisotropic contraction where the c-axis contracts ca. 2.3% compared to a ca. 0.45% contraction of the a and b axes, a ca. six-fold difference in linear thermal expansion coefficient. This contraction corresponds to a decrease in the helical pitch of the 31 screw axis in the [001] direction. The anisotropic nature of the contraction is rationalised by a thorough analysis of intermolecular contacts within the crystal and their impact on the conformation of the molecule and crystal packing. Magnetoelastic Coupling Evidence by Anisotropic Crossed Thermal Expansion in Magnetocaloric RSrCoFeO6 (R = Sm, Eu) Double Perovskites.

Double perovskite oxides, characterized by their tunable magnetic properties and robust interconnection between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom, present an enticing foundation for advanced magnetic refrigeration materials. Herein, we delve into the influence of rare-earth elements on RSrCoFeO6 (R = Sm, Eu) disordered double perovskites by examining their structural, electronic, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties. Temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the stability of the orthorhombic phase (Pnma) across a wide temperature range. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that both Sm and Eu are in the 3+ state, whereas multiple states for Co2+/3+ and Fe3+/4+ are identified. The magnetic investigation and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) analysis brought to light the presence of a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a second-order phase transition (SOPT) in both samples. The maximum magnetic entropy change ΔSMmax was approximately 0.9 J/kg K for both samples at applied field 0-7 T, manifesting prominently above Neel temperatures TN ≈ 93 K (Sm) and 84 K (Eu). Nevertheless, different relative cooling powers (RCP) of 112.6 J/kg (Sm) and 95.5 J/kg (Eu) were observed. A detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent lattice parameters shed light on a distinct magnetocaloric effect across the magnetic transition temperature, unveiling an anisotropic thermal expansion [αV = 1.41 × 10-5 K-1 (Sm) and αV = 1.54 × 10-5 K-1 (Eu)] wherein the thermal expansion axial ratio αbSm/αbEu = 0.61 became lower with increasing temperature, which suggests that the Eu sample experiences a greater thermal expansion in the b-axis direction. At the atomic bonding level, the evidence for magnetoelastic coupling around the magnetic transition temperatures TN was found through the anomalies along the average Co/Fe-O bond distance, formal valence, octahedral distortion, as well as an anisotropic lattice expansion.

Exploring the structural stability and related physical properties of FePt2 alloys

The current work presents a theoretical study of the physical properties of several FePt2 ordered structures through first-principles calculations, including structural, magnetic, electronic, mechanical, phonon and thermal properties. The structural stabilities are certified by the enthalpies of formation, elastic constants, and phonon dispersion relationships. The tetragonal I4/mmm structure is energetically favorable compared to other types FePt2 structures including Cmcm, Immm, P63/mmc and P4/nmm structures. The electronic density of states and the contributions of each d-orbital electron to the magnetic moment are analyzed to understand their magnetism. The bulk modulus B values of these FePt2 structures are similar, but the Young's modulus E and shear modulus G as well as the elastic anisotropy are quite different. The thermal properties at finite temperature are estimated by the quasi-harmonic approximation. The I4/mmm structure has higher isothermal bulk modulus, lower thermal expansion coefficient and weaker thermal expansion anisotropy, which is more suitable for high temperature applications than other structures. Also, the sequence of thermal expansion anisotropy is P4/nmm > Immm > Cmcm > I4/mmm (≈P63/mmc).

Investigation of the anisotropic thermal expansion of PbIn6Te10 crystal by high temperature x-ray diffraction measurements

The PbIn6Te10 crystal, an IR laser frequency conversion material, grown via the Bridgman method with dimensions ϕ35 mm × 90 mm in a four-zone furnace, was subject to the investigation of its thermal expansion behavior using high-temperature x-ray diffraction in the range of 25–450 °C. Based on the obtained data, the average thermal expansion coefficients of 15.21 × 10−6 K−1 for α a and 6.44 × 10−6 K−1 for α c were determined utilizing the least square method. The study revealed that the linear and volume thermal expansion coefficients of PbIn6Te10 crystals satisfy the relationships α a > α c > 0, α V = 2α a + α c , and α a increased while α c decreased with increasing temperature, accentuating a substantial anisotropy in thermal expansion between the crystal’s principal axes. A detailed exploration pinpointed that the variations in the PbTe6 octahedron primarily governed the changes in the PbIn6Te10 unit cells, with further investigation uncovering its association with variations in the nearest neighboring bonds, which is mainly related to Pb-Te4 and Pb-Te2 bonds. Additionally, the determination of temperature-dependent anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient α was complemented by calculating Grüneisen parameter γ using Quasi-harmonic Debye model. Remarkably, these parameters also exhibited anisotropic behaviors ( γ⊥ increases with temperature whereas γ// decreases, α ⊥ > α ∥), contributing additional insights into the crystal thermal characteristics.

Continuous strain tuning of oxygen evolution catalysts with anisotropic thermal expansion

Compressive strain, downshifting the d-band center of transition metal oxides, is an effective way to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis. Here, we find that anisotropic thermal expansion can produce compressive strains of the IrO6 octahedron in Sr2IrO4 catalyst, thus downshifting its d-band center. Different from the previous strategies to create constant strains in the crystals, the thermal-triggered compressive strains can be real-timely tuned by varying temperature. As a result of the thermal strain accelerating OER kinetics, the Sr2IrO4 exhibits the nonlinear lnjo - T−1 (jo, exchange current density; T, absolute temperature) Arrhenius relationship, resulting from the thermally induced low-barrier electron transfer in the presence of thermal compressive strains. Our results verify that the thermal field can be utilized to manipulate the electronic states of Sr2IrO4 via thermal compressive strains downshifting the d-band center, significantly accelerating the OER kinetics, beyond the traditional thermal diffusion effects.

Anisotropic thermal expansion and themomechanic properties of α-phase group-VA monolayers

The theoretical investigations of anisotropic thermal expansion are quite few as the huge computational cost. In this work, a scheme of Taylor expansion for phonon free energy is introduced to investigate anisotropic thermal expansion, which can save lots of computational cost. The anisotropic thermal expansion and thermomechanic properties of α-phase group-VA monolayers (α-P, α-As, α-Sb and α-Bi) are investigated systematically by using the first-principles calculations. It is found all the four monolayers show remarkably anisotropic thermal expansion, and very different from each other. In α-As and α-Bi monolayers, remarkable negative thermal expansion appears along armchair direction. From α-P to α-Bi monolayer, the absolute value of linear thermal expansion coefficient becomes larger. In particular the linear thermal expansion coefficient of α-Bi is in terms of order of magnitude close to 10−4 K−1 at 300 K. The macroscopic Grüneisen parameters and elastic constants are also investigated to unveil the underlying physical mechanisms.

Phase transitions, baro- and piezocaloric effects in single crystal and ceramics of ferroelectric NH4HSeO4

A study of heat capacity, thermal dilatation and sensitivity to hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure was carried out on single-crystal and ceramic samples of NH4HSeO4. The main parameters of low-temperature successive phase transitions B2 (T1) ↔ incommensurate IC (T2) ↔ ferroelectric P1 (T3) ↔ non-ferroelectric did not depend on the type of samples. The behavior of the volumetric strain and the results of direct measurements of T3(p) contributed to the resolution of the longstanding problem associated with the ambiguity of the sign of the corresponding volumetric baric coefficient. The role of thermal expansion anisotropy in the formation of the piezocaloric effect (PCE) near the ferroelectric phase transition at T3 has been studied. Due to the strong difference in the linear baric coefficients, the main contribution to the barocaloric effect (BCE) comes from the inverse intensive and extensive PCE associated with the a-axis. Compared to a single crystal, ceramics demonstrate lower BCE values, which, however, exist in a wider temperature range, which leads to close values of integral caloric parameters. The strong decrease in both BCE and PCE at low-temperature transformations in NH4HSeO4 compared to the ferroelectrics NH4HSO4 and NH4NH4SO4 is associated with a small change in entropy during three low-temperature phase transitions, ΣΔSi = 2.52 J/mol∙K, which is a consequence of a high degree of structural ordering in selenate as a result of a high-temperature transformation at T0 between the superionic and B2 phases, accompanied by a giant change in entropy, ΔS0≈Rln21.

Anisotropic thermal expansion based on a novel metamaterial

Metamaterials exhibiting exceptional thermoelastic properties are emerging as promising candidates for scientific and engineering applications. Previous studies on mechanical metamaterials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) have primarily focused on enhancing isotropic NTE, often resulting in a high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) but low stiffness that characterizes bending-dominated NTE metamaterials. In this study, we proposed a novel mechanical metamaterial with significant anisotropic thermal expansion behavior and substantial stiffness based on the cross structure, re-entrant structure, and triangular structure with NTE. The programmable CTE and effective elastic modulus were analytically derived using the unit load method and stiffness matrix method, respectively, which were validated by numerical results obtained from finite element analysis (FEA). Drawing inspiration from the body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic strategies, two types of extended three-dimensional metamaterials can be obtained. The results demonstrate that a larger length ratio λ and angle θ3 can enhance the NTE effect, while reducing the Young's modulus. The maximum magnitudes of NTE and positive thermal expansion (PTE) are achieved at approximately θ2 = 90°, resulting in a decreased stiffness and slight negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). By adjusting the angles θ2 of re-entrant structures, six distinct anisotropic thermal expansion behaviors can be obtained in this planar metamaterial. Furthermore, a wider range of isotropic CTE as well as an extended range of anisotropic CTE can be achieved in the present metamaterial compared to its original metamaterials. The proposed metamaterial can be combined with traditional triangle metamaterials to enhance thermoelastic properties. The analysis also provides valuable insights into designing metamaterials with large CTE, optimal stiffness, and lightweight properties simultaneously for engineering applications.

Investigating the role of dispersion corrections and anharmonic effects on the phase transition in SrZrS3: A systematic analysis from AIMD free energy calculations.

A thermally driven needle-like (NL) to distorted perovskite (DP) phase transition in SrZrS3 was investigated by means of abinitio free energy calculations accelerated by machine learning. As a first step, a systematic screening of the methods to include long-range interactions in semilocal density functional theory Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof calculations was performed. Out of the ten correction schemes tested, the Tkatchenko-Scheffler method with iterative Hirshfeld partitioning method was found to yield the best match between calculated and experimental lattice geometries, while predicting the correct order of stability of NL and DP phases at zero temperature. This method was then used in free energy calculations, performed using several approaches, so as to determine the effect of various anharmonicity contributions, such as the anisotropic thermal lattice expansion or the thermally induced internal structure changes, on the phase transition temperature (TNP→DP). Accounting for the full anharmonicity by combining the NPT molecular dynamics data with thermodynamic integration with harmonic reference provided our best estimate of TNL→DP = 867K. Although this result is ∼150K lower than the experimental value, it still provides an improvement by nearly 300K compared to the previous theoretical report by Koocher et al. [Inorg. Chem. 62, 11134-11141 (2023)].

Theoretical Prediction of Thermal Expansion Anisotropy for Y2Si2O7 Environmental Barrier Coatings Using a Deep Neural Network Potential and Comparison to Experiment.

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are an enabling technology for silicon carbide (SiC)-based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) in extreme environments such as gas turbine engines. However, the development of new coating systems is hindered by the large design space and difficulty in predicting the properties for these materials. Density Functional Theory (DFT) has successfully been used to model and predict some thermodynamic and thermo-mechanical properties of high-temperature ceramics for EBCs, although these calculations are challenging due to their high computational costs. In this work, we use machine learning to train a deep neural network potential (DNP) for Y2Si2O7, which is then applied to calculate the thermodynamic and thermo-mechanical properties at near-DFT accuracy much faster and using less computational resources than DFT. We use this DNP to predict the phonon-based thermodynamic properties of Y2Si2O7 with good agreement to DFT and experiments. We also utilize the DNP to calculate the anisotropic, lattice direction-dependent coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) for Y2Si2O7. Molecular dynamics trajectories using the DNP correctly demonstrate the accurate prediction of the anisotropy of the CTE in good agreement with the diffraction experiments. In the future, this DNP could be applied to accelerate additional property calculations for Y2Si2O7 compared to DFT or experiments.

Gd2CuZnMn4O12: A-site columnar-ordered perovskite with anisotropic thermal expansion and a gradual charge-order transition

A new A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskite, Gd2CuZnMn4O12, was synthesized by a high-pressure, high-temperature method at 6 GPa and 1500 K. Its structural properties between 100 K and 800 K were investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. It has space group Pmmn (No. 59) between 100 K and about 450 K with a layered charge order (CO) of Mn3+ and Mn4+ cations at the perovskite B sites and space group P42/nmc (No. 137) above 475 K with one perovskite B site (having an average manganese oxidation state of +3.5). Anisotropic thermal expansion was observed as the c lattice parameter decreases with increasing temperature above 325 K. Temperature dependence of the unit-cell volume and the lattice parameters and differential scanning calorimetry measurements gave evidence that the CO transition (with TCO ≈ 475 K) is of the second order. Gd2CuZnMn4O12 shows a ferrimagnetic transition below TC = 105 K with an additional decrease of magnetic susceptibilities below about 45 K, probably caused by a gradual increase of the ordered moments on the Gd sublattices coupled antiferromagnetically with the existent ferrimagnetic structure.

Off-the-shelf thermosalience of anthracene-9-thiocarboxamide.

We demonstrate thermosalient behavior in anthracene-9-thiocarboxamide. Upon cooling, the crystalline material spontaneously fractures and jumps. Strong anisotropic thermal expansion precedes thermosalience, and the combination of hydrogen bonds and weaker interlayer interactions affords the macroscopic response. By incorporating structural moieties from different classes of thermosalient solids and using an underexplored supramolecular synthon, a dynamic, multi-functional material is achieved.
