Enhanced Thermal and Flexural Properties of Alkalized Date Palm/Kenaf Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Hybrid Composites: A Comparative Study of Untreated and Treated Fibers

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the thermal and mechanical behavior of hybrid composites made from date palm (DP) and kenaf fibers (KF) in an epoxy thermoset matrix. Both DP and KF fibers are abundant and renewable, reducing environmental impact. KF offers high tensile strength and stiffness, improving composite strength and rigidity, while DP fibers offer toughness and impact resistance, enhancing durability. The composites were developed in 30%, 50%, and 70% DP-KF compositions using layup and hot-pressing methods. Fiber treatment through alkalization was analyzed for its impact on mechanical and thermal properties to find the optimal fiber ratio. The hybrid composites were subjected to DMA, TGA, and flexural tests. The treated composites exhibited fewer impurities and increased cellulose content, resulting in enhanced flexural performance. This improvement was evident through higher storage modulus, lower loss modulus, and reduced tan δ when exposed to thermal stress. The 30% DP and 70% KF composites exhibited best performance. The treated 30DP-70KF exhibited improvement in the flexural strength and modulus by 13.8% and 2.7%, respectively. TGA demonstrated that treated 30DP-70KF composites had a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and better thermal degradation resistance. These findings highlight the potential of natural fiber hybrids in creating sustainable, high-performance composite materials for construction and industrial applications.

FTIR and GC-MS analyses of raw materials produced from food wastes used in synthesis of biofilms

The present study carried out the GC-MS and FTIR analyses of raw materials (ripe plantain peel powder, cassava starch, glycerol, acetic acid (vinegar) and eggshell powder) produced from food wastes that are used in production of biofilm. The GC-MS results revealed the presence of pentadecane, bis (2-methylpropyl) ester and benzoic acid, 3-(2-Hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone). The FTIR analysis revealed 17 peaks for glycerol, 16 peaks for vinegar, 15 peaks for cassava starch, 16 peaks for eggshell; representing the functional groups of ether, ethene, amine, carboxylic acid, nitriles, methylene cyclic ester, primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols common to hydrocarbons. The presence of carboxylic acid was important for enhancing the mechanical and chemical properties of biofilms thereby making them viable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Amines contributed to the flexibility, strength, and thermal degradation resistance of biofilms, thus aiding in their biodegradability. In conclusion, the study showed that the raw materials possessed biological activities and their functional groups indicated that the raw materials are safe to humans and the environment.

Plant-Based Films for Food Packaging as a Plastic Waste Management Alternative: Potato and Cassava Starch Case.

The escalating environmental impact of plastic packaging waste necessitates sustainable alternatives in food packaging. This study explores starch-based films derived from cassava and potato as viable substitutes, aiming to mitigate plastic pollution and enhance environmental sustainability. Utilizing a casting method, formulations optimized by CCRD were characterized for their physical, physicochemical, and morphological properties. Comprehensive analysis revealed both cassava and potato starch films to exhibit robust structural integrity, high tensile strength (up to 32.6 MPa for cassava starch films), and semi-crystalline morphology. These films demonstrated low water vapor permeability and moderate solubility, akin to conventional low-density polyethylene used in packaging. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated glass transition temperatures between 116.36 °C and 119.35 °C, affirming thermal stability suitable for packaging applications. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed homogeneous film surfaces, with cassava starch films (C4-15) exhibiting superior transparency and uniformity. X-ray diffraction corroborated the films' semi-crystalline nature, unaffected by sorbitol content variations. Despite their mechanical and thermal suitability, further enhancements in thermal degradation resistance are essential for broader thermoprocessing applicability. These findings underscore the potential of starch-based films to be used as lids or other part of a food package, decreasing the plastic dependency in food packaging, contributing decisively to waste reduction and environmental preservation.

Enhancing structural strength and water retention of crosslinked polyacrylamide gel with the T-ZnOw

Crosslinked polyacrylamide gel serves as an effective plugging material, crucial for preventing water/gas channeling in reservoirs and enhancing the swept volume and oil recovery. However, its practical application encounters a significant challenge in maintaining long-term stability of strength and volume, particularly under high temperatures. This study investigates the reinforcement of polyacrylamide gel with three-dimensional (3D) nanomaterials, specifically tetra-needle-like zinc oxide whiskers (T-ZnOw), to enhance its structural stability and bound water content. The stress sweep tests showed that the addition of 0.15 wt% T-ZnOw increased the maximum elastic modulus of the gel to 28.5 Pa, representing a 51.2 % improvement compared to before the addition. After 60 days of high-temperature aging at 130 °C, the T-ZnOw strengthened gel still maintained an elastic modulus of 21.8 Pa. With increasing T-ZnOw concentration, the yield point of the gel increased from 4.74 Pa to 9.57 Pa, the anti-deformation of the gel has significantly increased. The stability test results in high salinity water indicate that at a salinity of 150,000 mg/L, the dehydration rate of the strengthened gel is less than 5 %, with an elastic modulus retention rate exceeding 88 %. Furthermore, thermodynamic testing confirms the enhanced thermal degradation resistance and water retention capacity of the gel. Under reservoir temperature conditions, the T-ZnOw strengthened gel exhibits a weight loss of less than 3 %. Additionally, the inclusion of T-ZnOw results in an increase in the bound water capacity index from 4.65 to 12.28. In conclusion, the integration of T-ZnOw into the polyacrylamide gel network not only enhances its mechanical performance and water retention under high-temperature conditions but also demonstrates superior stability in high-salinity environments. This innovative material shows significant potential for improving oil recovery rates in high-temperature reservoirs and can be applied to other high-temperature underground scenarios such as geothermal development and CO2 utilization and storage.

Preparation and Properties of Brake Friction Materials Reinforced with Coconut Fiber and Dypsis Lutescens Fiber.

Brake friction material reinforced with coconut fiber and dypsis lutescens fiber was designed and prepared in this study. Specimens incorporating 0-8 wt.% of coconut fibers or dypsis lutescens fibers were fabricated. The effect of the content of these reinforcing fibers on the overall properties of brake friction materials was systematically investigated. The results indicate that the inclusion of reinforcing fibers in the formulation of brake friction materials can improve the physical properties and friction and wear properties of brake friction materials. The specimen incorporating 6 wt.% plant fiber obtained the optimal comprehensive performance with excellent fade resistance and recovery properties, and better wear resistance. In order to further investigate their performance, nine hybrid fiber brake friction materials were designed using the golden section method and orthogonal test method. The study indicated that the F-6 hybrid fiber-reinforced brake friction materials have better physical properties, thermal degradation resistance, recovery properties, and abrasion resistance than the single-fiber-reinforced brake friction materials. This study provides new concepts for the preparation of fiber-reinforced brake friction materials as well as formulation optimization.

Collagen-β-cyclodextrin hydrogels for advanced wound dressings: super-swelling, antibacterial action, inflammation modulation, and controlled drug release

A key strategy in enhancing the efficacy of collagen-based hydrogels involves incorporating polysaccharides, which have shown great promise for wound healing. In this study, semi-interpenetrating polymeric network (semi-IPN) hydrogels comprised of collagen (Col) with the macrocyclic oligosaccharide β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) (20–80 wt.%) were synthesised. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of these Col/β-CD hydrogels, evidenced by the presence of characteristic absorption bands, including the urea bond band at ∼1740 cm−1, related with collagen crosslinking. Higher β-CD content was associated with increased crosslinking, higher swelling, and faster gelation. The β-CD content directly influenced the morphology and semi-crystallinity. All Col/β-CD hydrogels displayed superabsorbent properties, enhanced thermal stability, and exhibited slow degradation rates. Mechanical properties were significantly improved with contents higher than β-CD 40 wt.%. These hydrogels inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria and facilitated the controlled release of agents, such as malachite green, methylene blue, and ketorolac. The chemical composition of the Col/β-CD hydrogels did not induce cytotoxic effects on monocytes and fibroblast cells. Instead, they actively promoted cellular metabolic activity, encouraging cell growth and proliferation. Moreover, cell signalling modulation was observed, leading to changes in the expression of TNF-α and IL-10 cytokines. In summary, the results of this research indicate that these novel hydrogels possess multifunctional characteristics, including biocompatibility, super-swelling capacity, good thermal, hydrolytic, and enzymatic degradation resistance, antibacterial activity, inflammation modulation, and the ability to be used for controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, indicating high potential for application in advanced wound dressings.

RHEOLOGICAL AND THERMAL EVALUATION OF POLYACRYLAMIDE HYDROGEL PROPERTIES WITH ALUMINUM OR ZINC OXIDE

The increase in demand for oil-based energy and the difficulty in discovering new oil reserves mean that mature reservoirs need to be optimized. These reservoirs have already been widely explored and often have fractures or zones with high permeability contrasts. In these scenarios, the injected recovery fluids tend to flow preferentially, resulting in lower sweeping efficiency and lower oil production. To avoid these problems, conformance control techniques have been used to optimize reservoir sweep. This process works redirecting the injected fluids to the lower permeability segments, which increase the sweep efficiency. Polymeric hydrogels can work by blocking high permeability zones, and these systems consist of hydrophilic polymers, where polyacrylamide derivatives are the most common. To enhance the applicability in drastic reservoir conditions, gels nanocomposites can be produced with novel properties. This work approached the research for the best composition of the polyacrylamide derivative crosslinked with polyethyleneimine and evaluated the addition of zinc or aluminum oxide nanofillers. The study evaluated different oxides contents in terms of mechanical, thermal properties and morphology. The results showed that increasing the ZnO filler provided higher elastic modulus and thermal degradation resistance. These observations correlated with the microscopies, which showed better zinc oxide interaction with polymer matrix.

Thermal Stability, Durability, and Service Life Estimation of Woven Flax-Carbon Hybrid Polyamide Biocomposites.

Woven flax-carbon hybrid polyamide biocomposites offer a blend of carbon fibers' mechanical strength and flax's environmental advantages, potentially developing material applications. This study investigated their thermal behavior, degradation kinetics, and durability to water uptake and relative humidity exposure and compared them with pure flax and carbon composites with the same matrix. The hybrid composite exhibited intermediate water/moisture absorption levels between pure flax and carbon composites, with 7.2% water absorption and 3.5% moisture absorption. It also displayed comparable thermal degradation resistance to the carbon composite, effectively maintaining its weight up to 300 °C. Further analysis revealed that the hybrid composite exhibited a decomposition energy of 268 kJ/mol, slightly lower than the carbon composite's value of 288.5 kJ/mol, indicating similar thermal stability. Isothermal lifetime estimation, employing the activation energy (Ed) and degree of conversion facilitated by the Model Free Kinetics method, indicated a 41% higher service life of the hybrid laminate at room temperature compared to the carbon laminate. These insights are crucial for understanding the industrial applications of these materials without compromising durability.

The role of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in enhancing the hydrolysis and thermal stability of PLA.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bioresorbable and biodegradable polymer extensively used in various biomedical and engineering applications. In this study, we investigated the mass loss and thermal properties of PLA-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites under simulated physiological conditions. The composites were prepared by melting PLA with 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 wt% MWCNTs using an ultrasonic agitator, and FTIR analysis confirmed composite formation. Subsequently, the composites were subjected to hydrolysis under simulated physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37°C) for up to 60days. The results revealed that the mass loss of the composites decreased with increasing MWCNT content, suggesting that the presence of MWCNTs decelerated the hydrolysis process. On day 58, the mass loss of pure PLA was 12.5%, decreasing to 8.34% with 0.1% MWCNT, 5.94% with 0.5% MWCNT, 4.59% with 1% MWCNT, and 3.54% with 5.0% MWCNT. This study offers valuable insights into the behavior of PLA-MWCNT composites under physiologically simulated conditions, facilitating the development of new polymer composites with enhanced thermal stability and degradation resistance for biomedical applications.

Study on the thermal decay mechanism of basalt fiber reinforced resin based friction materials

PurposeResin-based friction materials are the most widely used key materials in industry for braking and transmission. However, the friction coefficient of resin-based friction materials significantly decreases at temperatures above 300°C, which reduces their friction performance.Design/methodology/approachThis study combines elevated-temperature mechanical experiments with friction and wear experiments to explain the thermal degradation resistance performance and temperature recovery performance of resin-based friction materials. It also investigates the influence of friction material strength and worn morphology on the friction coefficient of materials at elevated temperature.FindingsThe experimental results show that the increase in friction coefficient of friction materials below 300°C is mainly due to the increase in worn morphology characterization parameters, and the thermal degradation phenomenon above 300°C is mainly due to the decrease of shear strength of friction film. Basalt fiber can significantly improve the thermal degradation resistance of friction materials. The friction coefficient of basalt fiber-reinforced specimens after thermal degradation reaches 0.421–0.443, which is 19–25% higher than the original. The thermal decay rate is 9.03–11.0%, which is 7.9–9.87% lower than the original. Moreover, the friction coefficient has good cooling recovery performance.Originality/valueRevealed the thermal degradation mechanism of resin-based friction materials, verified that basalt fibers can improve the thermal degradation resistance of friction materials and provided reference for the development of new friction materials.

Modification of the Human Amniotic Membrane Using Different Cross-Linking Agents as a Promising Tool for Regenerative Medicine.

Human amniotic membranes (hAMs) obtained during cesarean sections have proven to be clinically useful as an interesting biomaterial in a wide range of tissue engineering applications such as ocular surface reconstruction, burn treatments, chronic wounds, or bedsore ulcers. It presents antimicrobial properties, promotes epithelization, reduces inflammation and angiogenesis, contains growth factors, and constitutes the reservoir of stem cells. However, variability in hAM stiffness and its fast degradation offers an explanation for the poor clinical applications and reproducibility. In addition, the preparatory method of hAM for clinical use can affect its mechanical properties, and these differences can influence its application. As a directly applied biomaterial, the hAM should be available in a ready-to-use manner in clinical settings. In the present study, we performed an analysis to improve the mechanical properties of hAM by the addition of various reagents used as protein cross-linkers: EDC/NHS, PEG-dialdehyde, PEG-NHS, dialdehyde starch, and squaric acid. The effect of hAM modification using different cross-linking agents was determined via infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses, mechanical properties analyses, enzymatic degradation, and cytotoxicity tests. The use of PEG-dialdehyde, PEG-NHS, dialdehyde starch, and squaric acid increases the mechanical strength and elongation at the breaking point of hAM, while the addition of EDC/NHS results in material stiffening and shrinkage. Also, the thermal stability and degradation resistance were evaluated, demonstrating higher values after cross-linking. Overall, these results suggest that modification of human amniotic membrane by various reagents used as protein cross-linkers may make it easier to use hAM in clinical applications, and the presented study is a step forward in the standardization of the hAM preparation method.

Comprehensive performance of a diethylenetriamine/2-diethylaminoethanol biphasic absorbent for CO2 capture

The CO2 capture process based on amine absorption–regeneration is currently the most widely used technology, and the performance of absorbent is the key to this process. Biphasic absorbents have attracted considerable interest because of their strong potential to reduce the regeneration energy consumption and equipment investment costs. The mixed solution of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and 2-diethylaminoethanol (DEEA) has been proven to be a biphasic absorbent, but there is still a lack of comprehensive performance evaluation data. In this study, the ratio of the DETA/DEEA solution was optimized as 2 M DETA + 3 M DEEA, and its phase separation property, reaction mechanism, mass transfer kinetics, and desorption thermodynamics were investigated under various conditions. The comprehensive performance of the solution was then evaluated by further analyzing its oxidative degradation, thermal degradation, and metal corrosion characteristics. On this basis, the capital cost and operation cost of using DETA/DEEA biphasic absorbent were analyzed. Under typical coal-fired flue gas (CO2 concentration 12%), because of the high CO2 absorption capacity and excellent phase separation property, the minimal desorption energy consumption of the DETA/DEEA absorbent decreased to 2.14 GJ/t CO2, a 43.7% decrease compared with that of 5 M monoethanolamine (MEA). Under the same experimental conditions, DETA/DEEA exhibited an oxidative degradation rate of only 2.71%, which was 20.7% of 5 M MEA. In addition, the metal corrosion rate of DETA/DEEA was one order of magnitude lower than that of 5 M MEA. However, under a high CO2 loading, its thermal degradation resistance needed to be improved, and it was clear that the rates of oxidative degradation, metal corrosion, and thermal degradation of the CO2 rich lower phase were higher than those of the CO2 lean upper phase. The capital cost and operational capture cost of the DETA/DEEA biphasic process were approximately $107.8/t CO2 and $31.6/t CO2, respectively, which were 2.5% and 36.4% lower than those of the MEA process. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the industrial application of DETA/DEEA.

Influence of Coffee Variety and Processing on the Properties of Parchments as Functional Bioadditives for Biobased Poly(butylene succinate) Composites.

Fermented polymers like biobased poly(butylene succinate) (BioPBS) have become more relevant as technical substitutes for ductile petrochemical-based polymers but require biogenic functional additives to deaccelerate undesired thermo-oxidative degradation and keep a fully biobased character. In this paper, the influence of coffee parchment (PMT) from two different varieties and processings on the thermo-oxidative stabilization and mechanical properties of poly(butylene succinate) composites up to 20 wt.-% PMT were investigated. Micronized with a TurboRotor mill, both PMT powders differ in particle size and shape, moisture ab- and adsorption behavior and antioxidative properties. It could be shown that pulped-natural PMT consists partially of coffee cherry residues, which leads to a higher total polyphenol content and water activity. The homogeneous PMT from fully washed processing has a higher thermal degradation resistance but consists of fibers with larger diameters. Compounded with the BioPBS and subsequent injection molded, the fully washed PMT leads to higher stiffness and equal tensile strength but lower toughness compared to the pulped-natural PMT, especially at lower deformation speed. Surprisingly, the fully washed PMT showed a higher stability against thermo-oxidative decomposition despite the lower values in the total phenol content and antioxidative activity. The required antioxidative stabilizers might be extracted at higher temperatures from the PMT fibers, making it a suitable biogenic stabilizer for extrusion processes.

Development of impact-resistant mycelium-based composites (MBCs) with agricultural waste straws

This paper was intended to investigate the feasibility of developing impact-resistant mycelium-based composites (MBCs) with agricultural waste straws. Different agricultural waste straws, i.e., rice straw, wheat straw and corn straw, were applied to prepare MBCs with the inoculation of Ganoderma lucidum. The basic physical properties of MBC specimens, i.e., density, elasticity modulus and thermal conductivity, were tested and analyzed. The repeated compressive tests, as well as impact tests of MBCs under different heights, were also conducted. It was found that the thermal conductivities of all MBCs are comparable with the commercial thermal insulation material, indicating that the proposed MBCs have favorable thermal degradation and fire resistance properties. It was also found that the maximum compressive strength for rice straw and wheat straw-based MBCs can be higher than 6.4 MPa. The energy dissipation coefficient of rice straw-based MBC specimen can be higher than 90% under different impact heights, indicating that the rice straw-based MBC specimen is suitable to be applied as the impact-resistant filling material. The influence of waste straw types was also investigated and analyzed. It was concluded that the rice straw and wheat straw-based MBCs have higher compressive strength and impact-resistance than corn straw-based MBCs, which was attributed to the low degree of fermentation due to the flaky shape of corn straws.

Mineralization promotion and protection effect of carboxymethyl chitosan biomodification in biomimetic mineralization

Biomimetic mineralization emphasizes reversing the process of dental caries through bio-inspired strategies, in which mineralization promotion and collagen protection are equally important. In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) was deemed as an analog of glycosaminoglycan for biomimetic modification of collagen, both of the mineralization facilitation and collagen protection effect were evaluated. Experiments were carried out simultaneously on two-dimensional monolayer reconstituted collagen model, three-dimensional reconstituted collagen model and demineralized dentin model. In three models, CMC was successfully cross-linked onto collagen utilizing biocompatible 1-Ethyl-3(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxy sulfosuccinimide sodium salt to achieve biomodification. Results showed that CMC biomodification increased collagen's hydrophilicity, calcium absorption capacity and thermal degradation resistance. In demineralized dentin model, the activity of endogenous matrix metalloproteinases was significantly inhibited by CMC biomodification. Furthermore, CMC biomodification significantly improved cross-linking and intrafibrillar mineralization of collagen, especially in the two-dimensional monolayer reconstituted collagen model. This study provided a biomimetic mineralization strategy with comprehensive consideration of collagen protection, and enriched the application of chitosan-based materials in dentistry.

Graphene-maleic anhydride-grafted-carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene-rubber nanocomposites

Ethylene-propylene grafted-maleic anhydride (EPR-g-MA) and a pure maleic anhydride (MA) were separately used to compound carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene-rubber (XNBR) together with reduced graphene oxide (G) to form nanocomposites, by using melt compounding technique. The G-sheets in the presence of MA (GA samples) or EPR-g-MA (GB samples) generally increased the physico-mechanical properties including; crosslinking density, tensile strength and thermal degradation resistance etc., when compared with sample without MA or EPR-g-MA (GAO) and the virgin matrix. For the thermal degradation resistance measured by the char residue (%), by using thermal gravimetric analysis technique; GA1 (0.1 ph G and 0.5 ph MA) was 106.4% > XNBR and 58% > GAO (0.1 ph G) while that of GB1 (0.1 ph G and 0.5 ph EPR-g-MA) was 60% > XNBR and 22.2% > GAO respectively. Although, homogeneous dispersions of the G-sheets assisted by MA or EPR-g-MA was a factor, but the strong bonding (covalent, hydrogen and physical entanglements) occurring in GA and GB was observed to be the main contributing factor for these property enhancements. Thus, these nanostructured materials have exhibited multifunctional capabilities and could be used for advanced applications including high temperature (heat sinks), flame retardants, and structural applications.

Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane Bio-Foam with Inherent Heat and Fire Resistance.

Polyurethanes (PUs) are versatile and widespread, particularly as flexible and rigid foams. To avoid isocyanates and other toxic reagents required for synthesis, such as phosgene, alternative synthetic routes have been utilized to produce non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs). A thermally and flame-resistant rigid NIPU was produced from environmentally benign and bio-sourced ingredients, requiring no catalyst or solvents. A foamed structure was obtained by the addition of glutaraldehyde and four different carboxylic acids: malic acid, maleic acid, citric acid, and aconitic acid. The resulting morphology, thermal degradation, and flame resistance of each foam were compared. The properties vary with each carboxylic acid used, but in each case, peak thermal degradation and peak heat release are postponed by >100 °C compared to commercial rigid PU foam. Furthermore, in a butane torch test, NIPU foams exhibit an 80% higher remaining mass and a 75% reduction in afterburn time, compared to commercial polyurethane. This bio-based polyurethane eliminates the hazards of traditional PUs, while imparting inherent thermal stability and flame resistance uncharacteristic of conventional foams.

Semi-IPN hydrogels of collagen and gum arabic with antibacterial capacity and controlled release of drugs for potential application in wound healing.

The preparation of hydrogels based on biopolymers like collagen and gum arabic gives a chance to provide novel options that can be used in biomedical field. Through a polymeric semi-interpenetration technique, collagen-based polymeric matrices can be associated with gum arabic while controlling its physicochemical and biological properties. To create novel hydrogels with their potential use in the treatment of wounds, the semi-interpenetration process, altering the concentration (0-40% by wt) of gum arabic in a collagen matrix is explored. The ability of gum arabic to create intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the collagen matrix enables the development of semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks (semi-IPN)-based hydrogels with a faster gelation time and higher crosslinking. Amorphous granular surfaces with linked porosity are present in matrices with 30% (by wt) of gum arabic, enhancing the storage modulus and thermal degradation resistance. The hydrogels swell to very high extent in hydrolytic and proteolytic environments, good hemocompatibility, and suppression of growth of pathogens like E. coli, and all it is enhanced by gum arabic included them, in addition to enabling the controlled release of ketorolac. The chemical composition of theses semi-IPN matrices have no deleterious effects on monocytes or fibroblasts, promoting their proliferation, and lowering alpha tumor necrosis factor (α-TNF) secretion in human monocytes.

Effect of epoxy concentrations on thermo-mechanical properties of kenaf fiber – recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) composites

The effect of different concentrations of epoxy surface coating treatment on the thermal and mechanical properties of kenaf fiber reinforced recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) (RPET) composites was studied. Silane-treated kenaf fibers (SKF) were epoxy-coated with optimized coating concentrations (in the ratios of 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6 epoxy to acetone solutions) to improve the thermal degradation/decomposition resistance and interfacial bonding with RPET matrix. The different epoxy coated-silane treated kenaf fibers 1:4 ESKF, 1:5 ESKF, and 1:6 ESKF were compounded with RPET at an optimized temperature of 240°C, and their constituents’ composites KF/RPET, 1:4 ESKF/RPET, 1:5 ESKF/RPET, and 1:6 ESKF/RPET were subjected to thermal, mechanical and microstructural investigation. The obtained results showed some remarkable effects of epoxy concentrations on the chemical and surface structures of the treated fibers. Thermal properties of both ESKF and ESKF/RPET composites were more stable and improved with different concentrations of epoxy treatment compared to the untreated counterparts. 1:4 ESKF and 1:5 ESKF were the most thermally stable with onset degradation and DTG decomposition temperatures of 331.6°C and 381.7°C, and 324.0°C and 388.7°C respectively. Mechanical properties of the epoxy-coated composites were higher and further improved with epoxy concentrations and fiber loadings compared to uncoated composites. Hence, the epoxy concentration of 1:4 gave the maximum tensile and impact properties, and at 10 wt. % fiber loading within the lower loading regions, followed by 1:5 with outstanding flexural properties. The coated-treated composites showed strong fiber/matrix bonding with no evidence of fiber decomposition compared to the untreated composites with poor fiber/matrix interaction. The current research findings are original and valid for improving the thermal degradation resistance and stability of natural fibers, and the mechanical properties of natural fiber reinforced engineering thermoplastic composites. The epoxy coated – silane-treated textile kenaf fibers reinforced with recycled PET composites have the potentials to be utilized in high-temperature industrial and engineering applications.
