Quantifying influence of rainfall events on outdoor thermal comfort in subtropical dense urban areas

Existing research on outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas focuses on meteorological factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and radiation on sunny or cloudy days. However, climate conditions before, during, and after rainfall events can cause changes in meteorological factors in subtropical regions. Rainfall is an atmospheric condition with a large influence on thermal comfort, particularly in subtropical areas with abundant rain. Big data on temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and total cloud cover from the Taipei Weather Station under the Central Weather Administration from June to August each year from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed, dividing the data into categories based on precipitation. Using a k-means clustering algorithm, we quantified the relationships between meteorological factors and apparent temperature as well as physiological equivalent temperature in different rainfall scenarios. The results indicate that rainfall in the summers of subtropical oceanic climates indeed influence outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas: 37.7% of the rainfall weather patterns improved thermal comfort and 62.3% of the rainfall weather patterns reduced thermal comfort. RWP 46 represent the weather conditions that most significantly improve thermal comfort, at 1:00 PM, with a rainfall of 15 mm, there is a decrease in ΔAT by 14.4 °C and ΔPET by 22.1 °C. With the hot, humid, and rainy climate conditions in Taiwan, apparent temperature is the most accurate index of thermal comfort. KEY POLICY HIGHLIGHTS Rainfall events may affect outdoor thermal comfort in subtropical cities. Different rainfall weather patterns have different impacts on urban outdoor thermal environments. 62.3% of rainfall weather patterns resulted in worsened thermal comfort, for low and concentrated rainfall resulting in a stuffier thermal environment.

Comparing land surface temperature and mean radiant temperature for urban heat mapping in Philadelphia

Many cities are experiencing more frequent extreme heat during hot summers. With the rise of global temperature, the thermal comfort in urban areas become even worse. Quantitative information of the spatial distributions of urban heat has become increasingly important for resilience and adaptation to climate change in cities. This study compares satellite-derived land surface temperature (LST) and urban microclimate modeling-based mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) for mapping the urban heat distributions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.The LST was estimated based on Landsat 8 thermal imagery with a spatial resolution of around 100 m, while the Tmrt was simulated based on high resolution LiDAR and national aerial imagery program multispectral aerial imageries with a spatial resolution of 1 m. Result shows that both LST and Tmrt show a similar general pattern of the urban heat across the study area, while the Tmrt presents much more details of the heat variations street by street and neighborhood by neighborhood. The LST tends to have a stronger relationship with the Tmrt on building roofs, which are usually not the place for human activities. This studyprovides evidence for choosing more appropriate metrics in urban heat-related studies.

Thermal comfort in urban areas on hot summer days and its improvement through participatory mapping: A case study of two Central European cities

With increasing urbanisation and climate change, citizens are more frequently exposed to heat stress. In the current pragmatists’ discourse, efforts to adapt cities to deteriorating climate conditions should reflect not only the objective (physical) effects of the proposed measures, but also citizens’ preferences, which influence the perception schemata and mental image of a place. This study employs the innovative approach of mental mapping, using an online survey to identify mental hotspots and coolspots in two Central European cities of Plzeň and Olomouc (Czechia). Map points and polygons, indicating locations thermally (un)comfortable to individual respondents, are combined into aggregate mental maps. Personal behavioural adaptation measures and citizens’ preferences for measures ameliorating thermal discomfort in thermally uncomfortable areas are analysed. The results show that the most preferred measures for improving thermal comfort are trees and parks, and a combination of greenery with blue elements. Other measures, such as temporary greenery, green roofs and facades, exterior shading elements, water spraying and misting, and street sprinkling, are substantially less frequently proposed. However, there are spatial differences between the preferred measures. The character of mental coolspots confirms citizens’ preferences for trees and parks and its synergy with blue elements and provides inspiration for positive change in (mental) hotspots. Moreover, the uneven spatial distribution of mental coolspots in the studied cities revealed neighbourhoods with few or no cooling opportunities in public areas.

On the Thermal Environmental Quality of Typical Urban Settlement Configurations

Urban overheating and energy imbalances are severe environmental concerns. The role of urban sprawl patterns in the formation of Heat Island has recently absorbed the researchers’ interest. The research focuses on metropolitan areas with a range of urban typologies. However, there still is a knowledge gap in how UHI responds to different urban typologies. The interaction between urban configurations and heat island characteristics is explored in Sydney. A combination of terrestrial surveys and modelling techniques was implemented, and results were extracted based on simulation results. The Urban Taskforce Australia suggested the applied categorization methods that follow Stewart and Oke’s Local Climate Zones (LCZs) scheme. We assessed eleven urban designs on ambient air temperature, wind characteristics, heat intensity, and outdoor thermal comfort over three summer days. We correlated results to density and the built-up ratio in all configurations and found that the maximum configurational impact on the heat island reached 2.33 °C. Configurations with a built-up ratio between 0.37 to 0.5 present a sharp downward trend in the average wind speed value and indicate a minimum with a built-up ratio of 0.63. Wind maps present an increase in layouts with built-up ratios of 0.23 to 0.37, whereas they decreased with built-up ratios of higher than 0.43. The average temperature decrease in high-rise compact configurations was 1.12 °C per hour. This record is substantially higher than its open counterparts. The study showed the importance of urban configuration on thermal environmental quality. In addition, implementing appropriate urban design parameters is vital to mitigate heat islands and improve environmental thermal comfort in urban areas.

How do street trees affect urban temperatures and radiation exchange? Observations and numerical evaluation in a highly compact city

Street trees are an important driver of street microclimate through shading and transpirative cooling, which are key mechanisms for improving thermal comfort in urban areas. Urban canopy models (UCM) with integrated trees are useful tools because they represent the impacts of street trees on neighborhood-scale climate, resolving the interactions between buildings, trees and the atmosphere. In this study, we present the results of a measurement campaign where vehicle transects were completed along two similar parallel streets of Barcelona with different tree densities, recording upward and downward radiation fluxes, air temperature and humidity at street level. These observations are used to evaluate and improve the multi-layer UCM Building Effect Parameterization with Trees (BEP-Tree). Prior simulations of the model revealed insufficient heat exchange between the canyon surfaces and the air at the lowest vertical levels inside the deep canyons, which we solve by including turbulent buoyancy driven wind velocity in the model. Air temperatures are on average 1.3 °C higher in the street with sparser trees when wind direction is perpendicular to the streets. The BEP-Tree simulations demonstrate good agreement with the observations in terms of temperature and radiation, and capture the diurnal evolution of temperature and radiation between the two streets.

A comprehensive review of outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas: Effective parameters and approaches

Increased urban air temperature considerably affects the health, comfort and consequently the quality of life in urban spaces. Urban design and planning studies, therefore, face an increasing challenge as they aim to improve Outdoor Thermal Comfort (OTC) and microclimate conditions of urban environments. Analysing OTC is more challenging when compared to indoor thermal comfort since a wider range of interrelated parameters exists in outdoor environments. Therefore, this research aims to classify urban studies that investigate OTC by conducting a comprehensive review based on key metrics such as approaches taken, methodologies and spatial and temporal scales. By extracting the key findings, this research forms an integrated framework of these metrics that presents a thorough view of the OTC concept in the context of climate-sensitive studies. Furthermore, this research elaborates on the main two groups of parameters affecting OTC including environmental and human-based parameters. Exploring the intricate inter-relationships of these two groups of parameters clarifies their contribution to OTC. Results of this study help architects and urban planners to improve their climate-sensitive strategies and support the decision-making process by providing a comprehensive perspective about different aspects of OTC. Finally, recommendations for future research are outlined.

Thermal performance prediction of street trees inside isolated open spaces – evaluations from real scale retrofitting project

Climate change and the urban heat island (UHI) effects are increasing heat stress and adversely impacting outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas. The study demonstrates that thermal comfort conditions can be improved by reducing air temperature and surface temperature with the integration of street trees into the urban environment. In this work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations have been performed to analyze the cooling effect of street trees for heatwave period (18–22 June 2015) in a hot-humid urban environment. The results are then compared in-term-of air/surface temperature, flow-velocity and apparent temperature for the vegetation case, open-space case, and built case. The analysis shows that the vegetation can effectively decrease surrounding temperature (a reduction of 1.2 K), thereby reducing energy consumption and effectively promote thermal comfort conditions. The study findings will encourage city planners and citizens to take action for urban greening.

Digital Simulation for Buildings’ Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Urban Neighborhoods

Buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort influences environment quality and human behavior in urban neighborhoods. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) has been broadly applied to the study of buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas. However, complex environmental conditions in climate-sensitive urban areas can make UTCI assessment complicated and ineffective. This paper introduces digital techniques into buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort analysis for the improvement of the urban habitant environment. A digital simulation system is generated to facilitate the analysis procedure for buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort assessment in urban neighborhoods. The analysis addresses the research question: “Can digital simulation techniques provide a modeling system to assess buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort continuously and effectively?” Methods include a case study of neighborhoods in Beijing, qualitative and quantitative analysis based on digital processes, and parametric modeling. The results indicate that digital simulation techniques and tools have the capability to support the analysis of buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort by providing three-dimensional models, algorithm-based analysis, and visual simulation. The findings include a critique of digital simulation as applied to architecture study and insights on potentially improving buildings’ outdoor thermal comfort through human–computer interactions.

A simple technique for the traditional method to estimate mean radiant temperature.

The mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) is the most important meteorological factor influencing human thermal comfort in urban areas. Numerous methods have been implemented for estimating Tmrt using measured radiometer or thermometer data, and exhibit different levels of accuracy. This study presents a simple technique based on the traditional method (Tmrt_TM) to estimate Tmrt by utilizing measured radiation data from the radiometers. The estimated Tmrt values from the six-directional method (Tmrt_SM) and two black globe thermometer methods (Tmrt_BG and Tmrt_BGv) at two stations (sky view factor 0.69 and 0.94) in Jeju, Republic of Korea, for 8days (5 sunny days, 3 (semi-) cloudy days) in spring and summer were used to validate the Tmrt_TM. The results showed that the mean differences between Tmrt_TM and Tmrt_SM were within the required accuracy for comfort in ISO 7726 (± 2 ℃) on sunny days and were reduced to 0.1-0.3 ℃ in high Tmrt conditions such as clear summer days. The Tmrt_BG in most sunny and semi-cloudy days and Tmrt_BGv on all days resulted in large mean differences from the Tmrt_TM that exceeded the required accuracy for thermal stress in ISO 7726 (± 5 ℃). Therefore, both black globe thermometer methods should be used carefully when estimating Tmrt, especially during sunny days. The correlations between Tmrt_TM and Tmrt_SM were highly significant, 0.93 on all days (p = 0.01). The newly developed regression equations between Tmrt_TM and Tmrt_SM could reduce mean differences within 0.5 ℃ for all days, and their r2 values exceeded 0.87. Therefore, the simple Tmrt_TM technique can be used for Tmrt estimation in human thermal comfort studies.

Using Climate-Sensitive 3D City Modeling to Analyze Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Urban Areas

With increasing urbanization, climate change poses an unprecedented threat, and climate-sensitive urban management is highly demanded. Mitigating climate change undoubtedly requires smarter urban design tools and techniques than ever before. With the continuous evolution of geospatial technologies and an added benefit of analyzing and virtually visualizing our world in three dimensions, the focus is now shifting from a traditional 2D to a more complicated 3D spatial design and assessment with increasing potential of supporting climate-responsive urban decisions. This paper focuses on using 3D city models to calculate the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) as an outdoor thermal comfort indicator in terms of assessing the spatiotemporal distribution of heat stress on the district scale. The analysis is done to evaluate planning scenarios for a district transformation in Montreal/Canada. The research identifies a systematic workflow to assess and upgrade the outdoor thermal comfort using the contribution of ArcGIS CityEngine for 3D city modeling and the open-source model of solar longwave environmental irradiance geometry (SOLWEIG) as the climate assessment model. A statistically downscaled weather profile for the warmest year predicted before 2050 (2047) is used for climate data. The outcome shows the workflow capacity for the structured recognition of area under heat stress alongside supporting the efficient intervention, the tree placement as a passive strategy of heat mitigation. The adaptability of workflow with the various urban scale makes it an effective response to the technical challenges of urban designers for decision-making and action planning. However, the discovered technical issues in data conversion and wall surface albedo processing call for the climate assessment model improvement as future demand.

Outdoor Thermal Comfort of Urban Park—A Case Study

Urban parks are an important component of urban public green space and a public place where a large number of urban residents choose to conduct outdoor activities. An important factor attracting people to visit and stay in urban parks is its outdoor thermal comfort, which is also an important criterion for evaluating the liability of the urban environment. In this study, through field meteorological monitoring and a questionnaire survey, outdoor thermal comfort of different types of landscape space in urban parks in Chengdu, China was studied in winter and summer. Result indicated that (1) different types of landscape spaces have different thermal comforts, (2) air temperature is the most important factor affecting outdoor thermal comfort; (3) because the thermal sensation judgment of outdoor thermal comfort research in Chengdu area, an ASHRAE seven-sites scale can be used; (4) the neutral temperature ranges of Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) in Chengdu in winter and summer were obtained through research; (5) and UTCI is the best index for evaluating outdoor thermal comfort in Chengdu. These findings provide theoretical benchmarks and technical references for urban planners and landscape designers to optimize outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas to establish a more comfortable and healthy living environment for urban residents.

Behavioural Perspectives of Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Urban Areas: A Critical Review

The thermal characteristics of outdoor urban spaces and the street networks connecting them are vital to the assessment of the liveability and sustainability of cities. When urban spaces are thermally comfortable, city dwellers spend more time outdoors. This has several benefits for human health and wellbeing, also reducing indoor energy consumption and contributing to local economy. Studies on outdoor thermal comfort have highlighted the need to develop interdisciplinary frameworks that integrate physical, physiological, psychological, and social parameters to assist urban planners and designers in design decisions. In this paper, an extensive literature review of outdoor thermal comfort studies over the past decade was undertaken, including both rational and adaptive thermal comfort approaches, from the contextualize the behaviour perspectives related to the use of urban space. Consequently, the paper suggests a comprehensive framework for evaluating the relationship between the quantitative and qualitative parameters linking the microclimatic environment with subjective thermal assessment and social behaviour. The framework aims to contribute to the development of exclusive thermal comfort standards for outdoor urban settings.

Modeling of mesoscale phenomena using WRF-BEP-BEM-CIM in a complex region

Because of the global warming, urban planning strategies must be investigated to reduce building energy consumption and increase thermal comfort in urban areas. It is thus proposed in this study to use a mesoscale meteorological model to study the impact of multiple urban planning scenarios in the Canton of Vaud. The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model is used to conduct simulations. The urban parameterizations, Building Effect Parameterization + Building Energy Model + Canopy Interface Model (BEP-BEM-CIM), developed in previous studies are already integrated in the WRF model. We demonstrate that the models perform well in plateaued regions (<10% difference) but some important deviations (20%-30% difference) are noted in particularly complex regions with complex topography. Two possible improvements will be addressed in the future: there is a need to improve the topography representation in the model itself and other scenarios including the impact of future climate will also be assessed.

Analysis and Comparison of Shading Strategies to Increase Human Thermal Comfort in Urban Areas

With the expected increase in warmer conditions caused by climate change, heat-related illnesses are becoming a more pressing issue. One way that humans can protect themselves from this is to seek shade. The design of urban spaces can provide individuals with a variety of ways to obtain this shade. The objective of this study was to perform a detailed evaluation and comparison of three shading strategies that could be used in an urban environment: shade from a building, from a tree, and from an umbrella. This was done through using field measurements to calculate the impact of each strategy on a thermal comfort index (Comfort Formula (COMFA)) in two urban settings during sunny days of the summer of 2013 and 2014 in London, Canada. Building shade was found to be the most effective cooling strategy, followed by the tree strategy and the umbrella strategy. As expected, the main determinant of this ranking was a strategy’s ability to block incoming shortwave radiation. Further analysis indicated that changes in the convective loss of energy and in longwave radiation absorption had a smaller impact that caused variations in the strategy effectiveness between settings. This suggests that under non-sunny days, these rankings could change.

Spatial and temporal distribution of urban heat islands

The formation of an urban heat island (UHI) is one of the most common impacts of the urbanization process. To mitigate the effects of UHI, the planning of urban forests (e.g., creation of parks, forests and afforestation streets) has been the major tool applied in this context. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of heat islands in Vila Velha, ES, Brazil using the mono-window algorithm. The study followed these methodological steps: 1) mapping of urban green areas through a photointerpretation screen; 2) application of the mono-window algorithm to obtain the spatial and temporal patterns of land surface temperature (LST); 3) correlation between LST and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference build-up index (NDBI); 4) application of ecological evaluation index. The results showed that the mean values of LST in urban areas were at least 2.34 to 7.19°C higher than undeveloped areas. Moreover, the positive correlation between LST and NDBI showed an amplifying effect of the developed areas for UHI, while areas with a predominance of vegetation attenuated the effect of UHI. Urban centers, clustered in some parts of the city, received the worst ecological assessment index. Finally, the adoption of measures to guide the urban forest planning within urban centers is necessary to mitigate the effect of heat islands and provide thermal comfort in urban areas.

Impact of urban morphology on microclimate and thermal comfort in northern China

Abstract This work is an experimental study focusing on the impact of urban morphology on the urban heat island (UHI) intensity, microclimate conditions and thermal comfort in a newly-developed urban area in Tianjin city, China. According to the Koppen–Geiger climate classification system, the studied area is classified as hot summer continental climate, characterized by hot and humid summers as well as cold and dry winters. Air temperature, relative humidity (RH) and wind speed at 46 points within an 8-km2 area are measured during both winter and summer seasons. Based on measured results and climatic mapping, the impacts of urban constituents such as building, pavement, greenery and water area on UHI intensity and microclimate conditions are analyzed. Results show that UHI intensity reaches up to 4.5 °C during daytime and 5.3 °C at night in summer, and 2.6 °C during daytime and 5.0 °C at night in winter. Thermal comfort level at the measurement points is predicted using the Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) model developed for the local climate. The cooling effect of trees is evident during both daytime and nighttime in summer, but negligible in winter due to the reduction of leaf area and evaporation. The presence of both greenery and water body result in an increase in RH in air. Trees tend to reduce wind speed and improve thermal comfort in winter. Radiant heat dissipated from buildings and roads is the main contributor to nighttime UHI in both summer and winter seasons. Based on research results, urban design recommendations are proposed so as to improve outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas located in temperate climate zone during summer and winter.

Characterization of human thermal comfort in urban areas of brazilian semiarid

ABSTRACT Experimental studies were conducted aiming to characterize the thermal conditions in urban areas of the Brazilian semiarid for identifying the level of human thermal comfort in urban areas of the municipalities of Mossoró-RN, Serra Talhada-PE, Petrolina-PE and Juazeiro-BA. The results showed that the constituent elements of urban areas contribute to human thermal discomfort index (DIT). Both the wet and dry seasons showed up an uncomfortable condition in Mossoró on May 15th and on 23rd, 2008 (rural area) and on May 25rd, 2008 (urban area). By applying Thom's equation for obtaining the DIT, it was observed that the urban areas reported thermal comfort conditions always inferior to those observed in the rural areas. The results indicate conditions of partial comfort for the all areas surveyed. However, the incidence of human thermal discomfort related to the minimum, average and maximum air temperatures are, probably associated to the formation of urban heat islands. In addition, the afforestation is an effective mechanism of mitigating the adverse effects of these structures with better quality of life to the population. Therefore, it can be stated that the Brazilian semiarid region has specific urban climate, which is influenced by the design characteristics of the urban structure and buildings.

Effects of urban green infrastructure (UGI) on local outdoor microclimate during the growing season.

This study analyzed how the variations of plant area index (PAI) and weather conditions alter the influence of urban green infrastructure (UGI) on microclimate. To observe how diverse UGIs affect the ambient microclimate through the seasons, microclimatic data were measured during the growing season at five sites in a local urban area in The Netherlands. Site A was located in an open space; sites B, C, and D were covered by different types and configurations of green infrastructure (grove, a single deciduous tree, and street trees, respectively); and site E was adjacent to buildings to study the effects of their façades on microclimate. Hemispherical photography and globe thermometers were used to quantify PAI and thermal comfort at both shaded and unshaded locations. The results showed that groves with high tree density (site B) have the strongest effect on microclimate conditions. Monthly variations in the differences of mean radiant temperature (∆Tmrt) between shaded and unshaded areas followed the same pattern as the PAI. Linear regression showed a significant positive correlation between PAI and ∆Tmrt. The difference of daily average air temperature (∆Ta) between shaded and unshaded areas was also positively correlated to PAI, but with a slope coefficient below the measurement accuracy (±0.5 °C). This study showed that weather conditions can significantly impact the effectiveness of UGI in regulating microclimate. Evaluation and improvement of outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas on extreme temperature days: Applications of automatic algorithms

The objective of this paper is to present and apply automatic algorithms to evaluate and improve non-stationary outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas. The effects of urban planning on thermal sensations are analyzed in three linear urban street designs and in non-linear arrangement of the streets with no vegetation in Novi Sad, Serbia. A temporal analysis is performed for extreme hot and cold days using universal thermal climate index (UTCI) simulations in the Grasshopper program. In future linear street design, the frequencies of the greatest thermal stress situations substantially decrease on hot summer days and slightly increase on cold winter days. Past, present, and future urban designs of linear street are compared, and the largest UTCI decreases are noted at 10, 17 and 18 UTC on hot summer days at 11 UTC on cold winter days. Future planed and proposed urban design of linear and non-linear streets is compared and the largest UTCI decreases are noted at 10 UTC on summer day and increases at 11 UTC in winter day. The building height and density increases in the future street design will modify the thermal environment. The proposed automatic algorithms are applicable for the analysis of human thermal comfort in various urban designs and climates.

A note on the evolution of the daily pattern of thermal comfort-related micrometeorological parameters in small urban sites in Athens.

Studies on human thermal comfort in urban areas typically quantify and assess the influence of the atmospheric parameters studying the values and their patterns of the selected index or parameter. In this paper, the interpretation tools are the first derivative of the selected parameters (∆Parameter/∆t) and the violin plots. Using these tools, the effect of sites' configuration on thermal conditions was investigated. Both derivatives and violin plots indicated the ability of vegetation to act as a buffer to the rapid changes of air temperature, mean radiant temperature, and the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). The study is focused on the "thermal extreme" seasons of winter (December, January, and February) and summer (June, July, and August) during a 3-year period of measurements in five selected sites under calm wind and sunny conditions. According to the results, the absence of vegetation leads to high derivative values whereas the existence of dense vegetation tends to keep the parameters' values relatively low, especially under hot weather conditions.
