The patients´ skills for self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) influence the accuracy of the result. When inaccurate results are used to modify the therapy and lifestyle habits, the long-term results can be devastating. Thus, education to achieve accuracy in the SMBG results cannot be ignored. The aim of this study was to create and validate an information leaflet for effective use of SMBG in diabetics. The design included three phases: 1) structured development of an information leaflet for consistent SMBG use. A list of critical steps was made and, each of them, was assigned to a set of messages contained in the brochures of the meters more consumed in Portugal; 2) expert review; 3) validation by diabetics, in terms of understanding and reading the exhibited material. A cross-sectional descriptive study took place between October and November 2015, in a Portuguese community pharmacy. After reading the information leaflet, the opinions were evaluated in a questionnaire, using a Likert scale. Its validity and reliability were tested using Cronbach´s α and test-retest reliability, respectively. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and variance analysis. The bibliographic review of the operational errors allowed to include the necessary information to clarify SMBG doubts. The second phase generated changes to improve the written material. The opinion of the experts was favourable as to its relevance and appropriateness. The final version was validated by 35 diabetics, who practiced SMBG. Understanding, motivation, adequacy, utility and learning were positively valued by the sample. No changes were, subsequently, made in the written material. The information leaflet had great patients´ sympathy and acceptance, so its design was effective and met the information needs of the sample under study. Additionally, it seems to be a good communication instrument, understandable and accessible to a wide range of diabetic individuals.
