The bond charges (BC) of AIIBIVC chalcopyrite semiconductors are experimentally determined for the first time. X-ray structure amplitudes depending on the bond charges and influenced only by the anion displacement as well as the C atom scattering power are measured. The BC are shown to be dependent almost only on their next neighbours. The BC amount, position, and extension can be deduced from the sum of the effective charges of the atoms and the electronegativity difference of the atoms contributing to the respective bond. The BC bond containing a higher number of electrons has a stronger covalent part with respect to the AC bond. Because the A atoms transfer electrons as to B as to C atoms, the ionic part of the AC bond increases and of the BC decreases with respect to a bond formed by neutral atoms.
