Bit error probability of VLC systems in underground mining channels with imperfect CSI

Analytical expressions of the statistical distribution of the underground mining visible light communication (UM-VLC) square-channel gain are derived considering scattering, shadowing, and a random position and orientation of the receiver. These expressions are employed to compute the system’s bit error probability (BEP) considering shot and thermal noises, on–off keying modulation, as well as perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver side. The results obtained for the BEP are validated by computer simulations for various UM-VLC scenarios. A close agreement is observed between the analytical and simulated curves. Furthermore, the performance of the UM-VLC system improves by increasing the field-of-view (FoV) and/or signal-to-noise-ratio. Indeed, for a FoV value of 45° for both the UM-VLC system with perfect CSI and imperfect CSI, the best performance in terms of BEP is obtained. In terms of the UM-VLC system with imperfect CSI, BEP curves saturate for higher values of signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) due to lower values of FoV, specifically in the case of 45°. Finally, the performance of the UM-VLC system increases significantly for higher values of SNR, specifically in the case of 20 dB.

Iterative Interference Cancellation for Multi-Carrier Modulation in MIMO-DWT Downlink Transmission

The Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) scheme represents the dominant radio interface for broadband multicarrier communication systems. However, with insufficient Cyclic Prefixes (CP), Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) occur due to the time-varying multipath channel. This means that the performance of the system will be degraded. In this paper, we investigate the interference problem for a MIMO Discrete Wavelet Transform (MIMO-DWT) system under the effect of the downlink LTE channel. A Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder is used to estimate the decoded signal. The proposed iterative algorithm uses the estimated decoded signal to compute the components required for ICI/ISI interference reduction. In this paper, Iterative Interference Cancellation (IIC) is employed to mitigate the effects of interference that contaminates the received signal due to multiple antenna transmission and a multipath channel. An equalizer with minimum mean square error is considered. We compare the performance of our proposed algorithm with the traditional MIMO-OFDM scheme in terms of bit error probability under insufficient CP. Simulation results verify that significant improvements are achieved by using IIC and MIMO-IIC for both systems.

Detection in molecular communications with ligand receptors under molecular interference

Molecular Communications (MC) is a bio-inspired communication technique that uses molecules to transfer information among bio-nano devices. In this paper, we focus on the detection problem for biological MC receivers employing ligand receptors to infer the transmitted messages encoded into the concentration of molecules, i.e., ligands. In practice, receptors are not ideally selective against target ligands, and in physiological environments, they can interact with multiple types of ligands at different reaction rates depending on their binding affinity. This molecular cross-talk can cause a substantial interference on MC. Here we consider a particular scenario, where there is non-negligible concentration of interferer molecules in the channel, which have similar receptor-binding characteristics with the information molecules, and the receiver employs single type of receptors. We investigate the performance of four different detection methods, which make use of different statistics of the ligand-receptor binding reactions: instantaneous number of bound receptors, unbound time durations of receptors, bound time durations of receptors, and combination of unbound and bound time durations of receptors within a sampling time interval. The performances of the introduced detection methods are evaluated in terms of bit error probability for varying strength of molecular interference, similarity between information and interferer molecules, number of receptors, and received concentration difference between bit-0 and bit-1 transmissions. We propose synthetic receptor designs that can convert the required receptor statistics to the concentration of intracellular molecules, and chemical reaction networks that can chemically perform the computations required for detection.

Design of Wavelet-Encoded Symbol Constellations for Cyclostationary Spectrum Sensing

In mobile communication systems, the signals propagate through multipath over time-varying channels, which are subject to distortion caused by fading and Doppler shifts. In order to minimize such distortions, coding techniques and transmission diversity can be employed, e.g., wavelet coding. In this work, the wavelet coding is investigated in scenarios of cognitive radio systems with dynamic spectrum access. Cognitive radio systems with dynamic spectrum access should be able to sense unoccupied frequency bands for opportunistic transmissions, as well as detect the presence of primary users when they occupy their licensed spectrum. Therefore, an essential element for the accurate operation of cognitive radio systems encoded by wavelet coding is the ability to sense the signals encoded by this technique. It is effectively demonstrated that the possibility of sensing such signals is associated with a suitable design of the signal constellation used in the modulation of the coded symbols. The constellation design of these is performed via genetic algorithms using a multiobjective optimization approach. The developed system is evaluated according to the robustness to time-varying flat fading through a bit error probability (BER) versus Eb/N0 analysis. The spectral sensing ability is also addressed employing the cyclostationary analysis. The results denote the feasibility of using wavelet coding in radio scenarios with dynamic spectrum access, with good performance in terms of BER and signal detection rates.

Revisiting Lightweight Encryption for IoT Applications: Error Performance and Throughput in Wireless Fading Channels With and Without Coding

Employing heavy conventional encryption algorithms in communications suffers from added overhead and processing time delay; and in wireless communications, in particular, suffers from severe performance deterioration (avalanche effect) due to fading. Consequently, a tremendous reduction in data throughput and increase in complexity and time delay may occur especially when information traverse resource-limited devices as in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. To overcome these drawbacks, efficient lightweight encryption algorithms have been recently proposed in literature. One of those, that is of particular interest, requires using conventional encryption only for the first block of data in a given frame being transmitted. All the information in the remaining blocks is transmitted securely without the need for using heavy conventional encryption. Unlike the conventional encryption algorithms, this particular algorithm achieves lower overhead/complexity and higher data throughput. Assuming the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the performance of the lightweight encryption algorithm under study had been evaluated in literature in terms of throughput under the assumption that the first block, that undergoes conventional encryption, is free of error, which is practically unfeasible. In this paper, we consider the AWGN channel with Rayleigh fading and assume that the signal experiences a certain channel bit error probability and investigate the performance of the lightweight encryption algorithm under study in terms of bit error probability and throughput. We derive analytical expressions for these performance metrics considering modulated signals with and without coding. In addition, we propose an extension to the lightweight encryption algorithm under study by further enhancing its security level without significantly affecting the overhead size and processing time. Via numerical results we show the superiority of the lightweight encryption algorithm under study over the conventional encryption algorithms (like the AES) and the lightweight encryption algorithms proposed in literature in terms of error and throughput performance.

Multi-Level Analysis of On-Chip Optical Wireless Links

Networks-on-chip are being regarded as a promising solution to meet the on-going requirement for higher and higher computation capacity. In view of future kilo-cores architectures, electrical wired connections are likely to become inefficient and alternative technologies are being widely investigated. Wireless communications on chip may be therefore leveraged to overcome the bottleneck of physical interconnections. This work deals with wireless networks-on-chip at optical frequencies, which can simplify the network layout and reduce the communication latency, easing the antenna on-chip integration process at the same time. On the other end, optical wireless communication on-chip can be limited by the heavy propagation losses and the possible cross-link interference. Assessment of the optical wireless network in terms of bit error probability and maximum communication range is here investigated through a multi-level approach. Manifold aspects, concurring to the final system performance, are simultaneously taken into account, like the antenna radiation properties, the data-rate of the core-to core communication, the geometrical and electromagnetic layout of the chip and the noise and interference level. Simulations results suggest that communication up to some hundreds of μm can be pursued provided that the antenna design and/or the target data-rate are carefully tailored to the actual layout of the chip.

Diffusive MIMO Molecular Communications: Channel Estimation, Equalization, and Detection

In diffusion-based communication, for molecular systems, the achievable data rate depends on the stochastic nature of diffusion, which exhibits a severe inter-symbol-interference (ISI). Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing improves the data rate at the expense of an inter-link interference (ILI). This paper investigates training-based channel estimation schemes for diffusive MIMO (D-MIMO) systems and corresponding equalization methods. Maximum likelihood and least-squares estimators of mean channel are derived, and the training sequence is designed to minimize the mean square error (MSE). The numerical validations in terms of MSE are compared with Cramer–Rao bound derived herein. Equalization is based on decision feedback equalizer (DFE) structure as this is effective in mitigating diffusive ISI/ILI. Zero-forcing, minimum MSE, and least-squares criteria have been paired to DFE, and their performances are evaluated in terms of bit error probability. D-MIMO time interleaving is exploited as an additional countermeasure to mitigate the ILI with remarkable performance improvements. The configuration of nano-transceivers is not static but affected by a Brownian motion. A block-type communication is proposed for D-MIMO channel estimation and equalization, and the corresponding time-varying D-MIMO MC system is numerically evaluated.

Performance Analysis of Circular Color Shift Keying in VLC Systems With Camera-Based Receivers

This paper introduces circular color shift keying (CSK) constellations in a visible light communications (VLC) system using a camera-based receiver with applications to vehicular communications, where vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are required to improve the safety of vehicles in high traffic density. The circular CSK constellations are shown to outperform the geometric and IEEE 802.15.7 constellations in terms of bit-error probability. Afterward, the noise at the receiver is investigated and transferred from the spatial domain to an angular noise in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color domain, where it is shown to behave similarly to a Gaussian distribution. Based on this noise model, a closed-form expression of the bit-error rate (BER) of circular CSK constellations is derived and shown to be accurate for BER ranges corresponding to VLC applications of practical interest. Diversity techniques are also investigated, and interesting differences are noted during the analysis compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) communication scenarios. Finally, the design of a link adaptation approach maximizing the number of bits per transmitted symbol, while meeting a target BER, is proposed. Hence, this paper presents a detailed design and analysis of a novel VLC modulation technique and demonstrates its efficiency and superiority.

Maximum Likelihood Detection With Ligand Receptors for Diffusion-Based Molecular Communications in Internet of Bio-Nano Things.

Molecular Communication (MC) is a bio-inspired communication technique that uses molecules as a method of information transfer among nanoscale devices. MC receiver is an essential component having profound impact on the communication system performance. However, the interaction of the receiver with information bearing molecules has been usually oversimplified in modeling the reception process and developing signal detection techniques. In this paper, we focus on the signal detection problem of MC receivers employing receptor molecules to infer the transmitted messages encoded into the concentration of molecules, i.e., ligands. Exploiting the observable characteristics of ligand-receptor binding reaction, we first introduce a Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection method based on instantaneous receptor occupation ratio, as aligned with the current MC literature. Then, we propose a novel ML detection technique, which exploits the amount of time the receptors stay unbound in an observation time window. A comprehensive analysis is carried out to compare the performance of the detectors in terms of bit error probability. In evaluating the detection performance, emphasis is given to the receptor saturation problem resulting from the accumulation of messenger molecules at the receiver as a consequence of intersymbol interference. The results reveal that detection based on receptor unbound time is quite reliable even in saturation, whereas the reliability of detection based on receptor occupation ratio substantially decreases as the receiver gets saturated. Finally, we also discuss the potential methods of implementing the detectors.

Inverted Wrap-Around Limiting with Bussgang Noise Cancellation Receiver for OFDM Signals

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a widely used multicarrier modulation technique. High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a major drawback of OFDM systems which leads to power inefficiency and signal distortions. The simplest approach is to clip the high amplitudes at some predefined threshold before the signal is applied to the amplifier. The clipping causes in-band distortion as well as out-of-band radiation. Though the out-of-band radiation is reduced using filtering, it causes peak regrowth. The peak regrowth is taken care of using the repeated clipping and filtering. This paper presents the use of a different form of limiting, inverted wrap-around (IWrap). IWrap is presented and evaluated in terms of PAPR reduction and peak regrowth. The results show that IWrap limiting is much better for PAPR reduction as compared to conventional clipping technique. The performance of the proposed limiting technique is investigated with Bussgang noise cancellation iterative receiver for OFDM signals. The results of this iterative receiver with IWrap limiting are presented in terms of bit error probabilities.

Towards Concurrent Data Transmission: Exploiting Plasmid Diversity by Bacterial Conjugation.

The progress of molecular communication (MC) is tightly connected to the progress of nanomachine design. State-of-the-art states that nanomachines can be built either from novel nanomaterials by the help of nanotechnology or they can be built from living cells which are modified to function as intended by synthetic biology. With the growing need of the biomedical applications of MC, we focus on developing bio-compatible communication systems by engineering the cells to become MC nanomachines. Since this approach relies on modifying cellular functions, the improvements in the performance can only be achieved by integrating new biological properties. A previously proposed model for molecular communication is using bacteria as information carriers between transmitters and receivers, also known as bacterial nanonetworks. This approach has suggested encoding information into the plasmids inserted into the bacteria which leads to extra overhead for the receivers to decode and analyze the plasmids to obtain the encoded information. Another scheme, which is proposed in this paper, is to determine the digital information transmitted based on the quantity of bacteria emitted. While this scheme has its simplicity, the major drawback is the low-data rate resulting from the long propagation of the bacteria. To improve the performance, this paper proposes a distributed modulation scheme utilizing three bacterial properties, namely, engineering of plasmids, conjugation, and bacterial motility. In particular, genetic engineering allows us to engineer the different combinations of genes representing the different series of bits. When compared with binary density modulation and the M-ary density modulation, it is shown that the distributed modulation scheme outperforms the other two approaches in terms of bit error probability as well as the achievable rate for varying quantity of bacteria transmitted, distances, as well as time slot length.

Construction and Encoding of QC-LDPC Codes Using Group Rings

Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which are known as QC-LDPC codes, have many applications due to their simple encoding implementation by the means of cyclic shift registers. In this paper, we construct QC-LDPC codes from group rings. A group ring is a free module (at the same time a ring) constructed in a natural way from any given ring and any given group. We present a structure based on the elements of a group ring for constructing QC-LDPC codes. Some of the previously addressed methods for constructing QC-LDPC codes based on finite fields are special cases of the proposed construction method. The constructed QC-LDPC codes perform very well over the additive white Gaussian noise channel with iterative decoding in terms of bit-error probability and block-error probability. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed codes have competitive performance in comparison with the similar existing LDPC codes. Finally, we propose a new encoding method for the proposed group ring-based QC-LDPC codes that can be implemented faster than the current encoding methods. The encoding complexity of the proposed method is analyzed mathematically, and indicates a significate reduction in the required number of operations, even when compared to the available efficient encoding methods that have linear time and space complexities.

Performance analysis of wavelet channel coding in COST207-based channel models on simulated radio-over-fiber systems at the W-band

Millimeter wave communications based on photonic technologies have gained increased attention to provide optic fiber-like capacity in wireless environments. However, the new hybrid fiber-wireless channel represents new challenges in terms of signal transmission performance analysis. Traditionally, such systems use diversity schemes in combination with digital signal processing techniques to overcome effects such as fading and inter-symbol interference (ISI). Wavelet Channel Coding (WCC) has emerged as a technique to minimize the fading effects of wireless channels, which is a mayor challenge in systems operating in the millimeter wave regime. This work takes the WCC one step beyond by performance evaluation in terms of bit error probability, over time-varying, frequency-selective multipath Rayleigh fading channels. The adopted propagation model follows the COST207 norm, the main international standard reference for GSM, UMTS, and EDGE applications. The results show how WCC can be efficient against ISI. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time WCC is considered on Radio-over-Fiber transmissions at mm-wave range.

Ultra-wideband systems with orthogonal coded differential TR receiver

This paper presents coded differential TR (cDTR) receiver that transmits extra bit by mapping information in K different orthogonal codes. The performance of the coded DTR is analyzed and compared with the conventional DTR. Throughout the analysis, the performance of receivers in terms of bit error probability (BEP), data rate and receiver complexity are assessed. The results show that coded DTR is able to outperform conventional DTR receiver in terms of data rate maintaining the same BEP. Additionally, the receiver hardware complexity issue is discussed

Performance Analysis of Relay-Assisted Cooperative Systems in Correlated Fading Channels

In this paper, the effect of fading correlation at the receiving elements of a linear antenna array in a relay-assisted cooperative single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system has been investigated over flat Rayleigh fading channels. Considering a model of local scatterer around the source and relay nodes and uniform angle of arrival (AOA) distribution, the spatial cross-correlation analysis is presented and extensive simulation studies are performed to determine the envelope correlation as a function of antenna spacing, mean AOA and angular spread. Error performance analysis for coherent binary and quaternary modulations are presented for fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) and fixed decode-and-forward (DF) relaying with dual diversity maximal-ratio combiner (MRC) receiver array. Error probability in terms of bit error probability (BEP) and symbol error probability (SEP) is evaluated to study the effect of relevant parameters on the correlation performance. The presented results establish the fact that fixed DF relay network performs relatively well than fixed-gain AF relaying. Superior performance of dual-hop cooperative SIMO system over conventional single-hop SIMO system has also been observed.

Differentially Amplitude- and Phase-Encoded QAM for Amplify-and-Forward Multiple-Relay Systems

This paper studies the differentially amplitude- and phase-encoded quadrature amplitude modulation (DAPE QAM) transmission for the amplify-and-forward multiple-relay system using the fixed-relay-gain mechanism over independent Rician and Nakagami- <i xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">m</i> fading links. In the multiple-relay system, the destination collects signals from the source and multiple relays in distinct phases. Operating over two successively received symbols, an equal-gain combining (EGC) receiver and a weighted-gain combining (WGC) receiver are developed to noncoherently combine received signals from direct and multiple-relay links and thereby achieve cooperative diversity. The EGC receiver operates without any link-side information, whereas the knowledge of average signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) on source-relay and relay-destination links is required for realizing the WGC receiver. Based on Beaulieu's convergent series approach, efficient computation formulas of the bit error probability (BEP) upper bounds are derived for both receivers. Numerical and simulation results on 16- and 64-point signal constellations show that the WGC receiver exhibits better BEP performance than the EGC receiver when link SNR estimates are not significantly large in error. The WGC receiver for DAPE QAM is also shown to outperform, in terms of BEP, the conventional receiver for differentially detecting the differential phase-shift keying modulation signal with the same constellation size.

A Comprehensive Study and Performance Comparison of M-ARY Modulation Schemes for an Efficient Wireless Mobile Communication System

Wireless communications has become one of the fastest growing areas in our modern life and creates enormous impact on nearly every feature of our daily life. In this paper, the performance of M-ary modulations schemes (MPSK, MQAM, MFSK) based wireless communication system on audio signal transmission over Additive Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel are analyzed in terms of bit error probability as a function of SNR. Based on the results obtained in the present study, MPSK and MQAM are showing better performance for lower modulation order whereas these are inferior with higher M. The BER value is smaller in MFSK for higher M, but it is worse due to the distortion in the reproduce signal at the receiver end. The lossless reproduction of recorded voice signal can be achieved at the receiver end with a lower modulation order.

Performance of double binary turbo coding for high speed PLC systems

In this paper, performance of double binary turbo coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is analyzed and simulated in power line communications (PLC) channel. In order to make power line channel environments, Bernoulli-Gaussian noise is considered. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that the double binary turbo coding scheme offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding complexity. It is also shown that the system performance can be substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations.

고속 전력선 통신을 위한 터보 부호화된 OFDM

본 논문은 전력선 통신 채널에서 터보 부호와 OFDM 시스템의 성능을 분석하고 시뮬레이션 하였다. 전력선통신 시스템은 최악의 환경에서 동작되기 때문에 터보 부호는 전송 데이터의 신뢰성을 보장하기 위해서 사용되었다. 시뮬레이션의 성능은 비트 오류 확률로써 표현하였다. 터보 복호 알고리즘으로써 MAP과 Max-Log MAP 알고리즘, 그리고 SOVA를 선택하였고, 이것들의 성능을 비교하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과로부터, Max-Log MAP 알고리즘이 성능과 복잡도면에서 유망하다는 것이 입증되었다. 그리고 터보 부호기의 인터리버 길이가 100에서 5000으로 변할 때와 반복 횟수가 2번에서 8번으로 증가할 때, 각 각 3dB증가하였음을 알 수 있다. 본 논문에서의 결과는 OFDM를 기반으로 하는 전력선 통신 시스템에 적용될 수 있음을 보여준다. In this paper, performance of a turbo-coded OFDM system is analyzed and simulated in a power line communication channel. Since the power line communication system typically operates in a hostile environment, turbo code has been employed to enhance reliability of transmitted data. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. As turbo decoding algorithms, MAP (maximum a posteriori), Max-Log-MAP, and SOVA (soft decision viterbi output) algorithms are chosen and their performances are compared. From simulation results, it is demonstrated that Max-Log-MAP algorithm is promising in terms of performance and complexity. It is shown that performance is improved 3dB by increasing the number of iterations, 2 to 8, and interleaver length of a turbo encoder, 100 to 5000. The results in this paper can be applied to OFDM-based high-speed power line communication systems.

Incremental Relaying with Partial Relay Selection

We propose an incremental relaying protocol in conjunction with partial relay selection with the aim of making efficient use of the degrees of freedom of the channels as well as improving the performance of dual hop relaying with partial relay selection (DRPRS). Specifically, whenever the direct link from the source to the destination is not favorable to decoding, the destination will request the help of the opportunistic relay providing highest SNR of the links from the source. Theoretical analyses, as well as simulation results, verify that our scheme outperforms the DRPRS scheme in terms of bit error probability. key words: amplify-and-forward, incremental relaying, partial relay selection
