Human discrimination and modeling of high-frequency complex tones shed light on the neural codes for pitch.

Accurate pitch perception of harmonic complex tones is widely believed to rely on temporal fine structure information conveyed by the precise phase-locked responses of auditory-nerve fibers. However, accurate pitch perception remains possible even when spectrally resolved harmonics are presented at frequencies beyond the putative limits of neural phase locking, and it is unclear whether residual temporal information, or a coarser rate-place code, underlies this ability. We addressed this question by measuring human pitch discrimination at low and high frequencies for harmonic complex tones, presented either in isolation or in the presence of concurrent complex-tone maskers. We found that concurrent complex-tone maskers impaired performance at both low and high frequencies, although the impairment introduced by adding maskers at high frequencies relative to low frequencies differed between the tested masker types. We then combined simulated auditory-nerve responses to our stimuli with ideal-observer analysis to quantify the extent to which performance was limited by peripheral factors. We found that the worsening of both frequency discrimination and F0 discrimination at high frequencies could be well accounted for (in relative terms) by optimal decoding of all available information at the level of the auditory nerve. A Python package is provided to reproduce these results, and to simulate responses to acoustic stimuli from the three previously published models of the human auditory nerve used in our analyses.

Contribution of frequency compressed temporal fine structure cues to the speech recognition in noise: An implication in cochlear implant signal processing

The study investigated the effect of proportionally frequency compressed encoding of temporal fine structure information on speech perception in noise using vocoder simulations of cochlear implant signal processing. The study proposed a pitch synchronous overlap-add algorithm (PSOLA) for downward frequency shifting of TFS. The speech recognition scores (SRS) were measured at −10 dB, 0 dB, and +10 dB for eight signal processing conditions corresponding to sinewave vocoder without TFS (NO-TFS), four unshifted TFS conditions including full band TFS, TFS up to 2000, 1000, and 600 Hz, and three conditions with PSOLA which shifted 2000, 1000 and 600 Hz TFS to 1000, 500 and 300 Hz respectively. The original envelope was unchanged across the conditions. SRS at +10 dB and −10 dB SNR reached ceiling and floor respectively, in most conditions. Hence, SRS at 0 dB SNR was compared across the conditions. The results showed that the SRS was highest with full band TFS and lowest for the NO-TFS condition.The SRS for TFS 600 Hz shifted to 300 Hz through PSOLA was higher than the NO-TFS condition. Study findings suggest that encoding TFS by proportional frequency compression results in better speech perception in noise compared to NO-TFS. An important observation of this current study is that the speech recognition was better than the sine wave vocoder for all TFS conditions including frequency compressed 600 Hz TFS.

A Phenomenological Model Reproducing Temporal Response Characteristics of an Electrically Stimulated Auditory Nerve Fiber.

The ability of cochlear implants (CIs) to restore hearing to profoundly deaf people is based on direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve fibers (ANFs). Still, CI users do not achieve as good hearing outcomes as their normal-hearing peers. The development and optimization of CI stimulation strategies to reduce that gap could benefit from computational models that can predict responses evoked by different stimulation patterns, particularly temporal responses for coding of temporal fine structure information. To that end, we present the sequential biphasic leaky integrate-and-fire (S-BLIF) model for the ANF response to various pulse shapes and temporal sequences. The phenomenological S-BLIF model is adapted from the earlier BLIF model that can reproduce neurophysiological single-fiber cat ANF data from single-pulse stimulations. It was extended with elements that simulate refractoriness, facilitation, accommodation and long-term adaptation by affecting the threshold value of the model momentarily after supra- and subthreshold stimulation. Evaluation of the model demonstrated that it can reproduce neurophysiological data from single neuron recordings involving temporal phenomena related to inter-pulse interactions. Specifically, data for refractoriness, facilitation, accommodation and spike-rate adaptation can be reproduced. In addition, the model can account for effects of pulse rate on the synchrony between the pulsatile input and the spike-train output. Consequently, the model offers a versatile tool for testing new coding strategies for, e.g., temporal fine structure using pseudo-monophasic pulses, and for estimating the status of the electrode-neuron interface in the CI user's cochlea.

Pitch Perception With the Temporal Limits Encoder for Cochlear Implants.

The temporal-limits-encoder (TLE) strategy has been proposed to enhance the representation of temporal fine structure (TFS) in cochlear implants (CIs), which is vital for many aspects of sound perception but is typically discarded by most modern CI strategies. TLE works by computing an envelope modulator that is within the temporal pitch limits of CI electric hearing. This paper examines the TFS information encoded by TLE and evaluates the salience and usefulness of this information in CI users. Two experiments were conducted to compare pitch perception performance of TLE versus the widely-used Advanced Combinational Encoder (ACE) strategy. Experiment 1 investigated whether TLE processing improved pitch discrimination compared to ACE. Experiment 2 parametrically examined the effect of changing the lower frequency limit of the TLE modulator on pitch ranking. In both experiments, F0 difference limens were measured with synthetic harmonic complex tones using an adaptive procedure. Signal analysis of the outputs of TLE and ACE strategies showed that TLE introduces important temporal pitch cues that are not available with ACE. Results showed an improvement in pitch discrimination with TLE when the acoustic input had a lower F0 frequency. No significant effect of lower frequency limit was observed for pitch ranking, though a lower limit did tend to provide better outcomes. These results suggest that the envelope modulation introduced by TLE can improve pitch perception for CI listeners.

Different binaural processing of the envelope component and the temporal fine structure component of a narrowband noise in rat inferior colliculus

Complex broadband sounds are decomposed by peripheral auditory filters into a series of relatively narrowband signals, each with a slowly varying envelope (ENV) and a rapidly fluctuating temporal fine structure (TFS). ENV and TFS information at the bilateral ears contribute differentially to auditory perception. However, whether the difference could attribute to mechanisms of binaural integration remains an open question. As a potential neural correlate, subsets of neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICC) are known to integrate binaural information with binaural inhibition or binaural summation. Therefore, we recorded the frequency-following responses (FFRs) to the ENV and TFS components of narrowband noises in the ICC of anesthetized rats and examined changes in FFR amplitude and stimulus-response coherence under various sound-delivery settings. We showed that binaural FFRENV was predominantly elicited by contralateral inputs and inhibited by ipsilateral inputs, exhibiting a “binaural-inhibition” like property. On the other hand, binaural FFRTFS received a balanced contribution from both sides, echoing the “binaural-summation” mechanism. What is more, binaural FFRENV was significantly correlated with contralateral-evoked but not ipsilateral-evoked FFRENV, while binaural FFRTFS correlated with both contralateral- and ipsilateral-evoked FFRTFS. Overall, these results suggest distinct binaural processing of ENV and TFS information at the midbrain level.

Effects of temporal fine structure preservation on spatial hearing in bilateral cochlear implant users.

Typically, the coding strategies of cochlear implant audio processors discard acoustic temporal fine structure information (TFS), which may be related to the poor perception of interaural time differences (ITDs) and the resulting reduced spatial hearing capabilities compared to normal-hearing individuals. This study aimed to investigate to what extent bilateral cochlear implant (BiCI) recipients can exploit ITD cues provided by a TFS preserving coding strategy (FS4) in a series of sound field spatial hearing tests. As a baseline, we assessed the sensitivity to ITDs and binaural beats of 12 BiCI subjects with a coding strategy disregarding fine structure (HDCIS) and the FS4 strategy. For 250 Hz pure-tone stimuli but not for broadband noise, the BiCI users had significantly improved ITD discrimination using the FS4 strategy. In the binaural beat detection task and the broadband sound localization, spatial discrimination, and tracking tasks, no significant differences between the two tested coding strategies were observed. These results suggest that ITD sensitivity did not generalize to broadband stimuli or sound field spatial hearing tests, suggesting that it would not be useful for real-world listening.

Signal processing & audio processors

Signal processing algorithms are the hidden components in the audio processor that converts the received acoustic signal into electrical impulses while maintaining as much relevant information as possible. Signal processing algorithms should be smart enough to mimic the functionality of external, middle and the inner-ear to provide the cochlear implant (CI) user with a hearing experience as natural as possible. Modern sound processing strategies are based on the continuous interleaved sampling (CIS) strategy proposed by B. Wilson in 1991, which provided envelope information over several intracochlear electrodes. The CIS strategy brought significant gains in speech perception. Translational research activities of MED-EL resulted in further improvements in speech understanding in noisy environments as well as enjoyment of music by not only coding CIS-based envelope information, but by also representing temporal fine structure information in the stimulation patterns of the apical channels. Further developments include “complete cochlear coverage” made possible by deep insertion of the intracochlear electrode, elaborate front end processing, anatomy based fitting (ABF), triphasic pulse stimulation instrumental in the suppression of facial nerve stimulation, and bimodal delay compensation allowing unilateral CI users to experience hearing with hearing aids on the contralateral ear. The large number of hardware developments might be exemplified by the RONDO, the world's first single unit audio processor in 2013. This article covers the milestones of translational research around the signal processing and audio processor topic that took place in association with MED-EL.

Speech Segregation in Active Middle Ear Stimulation: Masking Release With Changing Fundamental Frequency

Temporal fine structure information such as low-frequency sounds including the fundamental frequency (F0) is important to separate different talkers in noisy environments. Speech perception in noise is negatively affected by reduced temporal fine structure resolution in cochlear hearing loss. It has been shown that normal-hearing (NH) people as well as cochlear implant patients with preserved acoustic low-frequency hearing benefit from different F0 between concurrent talkers. Though patients with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) report better sound quality compared with hearing aids, they often struggle when listening in noise. The primary objective was to evaluate whether or not patients with a Vibrant Soundbridge AMEI were able to benefit from F0 differences in a concurrent talker situation and if the effect was comparable to NH individuals. A total of 13 AMEI listeners and 13 NH individuals were included. A modified variant of the Oldenburg sentence test was used to emulate a concurrent talker scenario. One sentence from the test corpus served as the masker and the remaining sentences as target speech. The F0 of the masker sentence was shifted upward by 4, 8, and 12 semitones. The target and masker sentences were presented simultaneously to the study subjects and the speech reception threshold was assessed by adaptively varying the masker level. To evaluate any impact of the occlusion effect on speech perception, AMEI listeners were tested in two configurations: with a plugged ear-canal contralateral to the implant side, indicated as AMEIcontra, or with both ears plugged, indicated as AMEIboth. In both study groups, speech perception improved when the F0 difference between target and masker increased. This was significant when the difference was at least 8 semitones; the F0-based release from masking was 3.0 dB in AMEIcontra (p = 0.009) and 2.9 dB in AMEIboth (p = 0.015), compared with 5.6 dB in NH listeners (p < 0.001). A difference of 12 semitones revealed a F0-based release from masking of 3.5 dB in the AMEIcontra (p = 0.002) and 3.4 dB in the AMEIboth (p = 0.003) condition, compared with 5.0 dB in NH individuals (p < 0.001). Though AMEI users deal with problems resulting from cochlear damage, hearing amplification with the implant enables a masking release based on F0 differences when F0 between a target and masker sentence was at least 8 semitones. Additional occlusion of the ear canal on the implant side did not affect speech performance. The current results complement the knowledge about the benefit of F0 within the acoustic low-frequency hearing.

Temporal Auditory Coding Features for Causal Speech Enhancement

Perceptually motivated audio signal processing and feature extraction have played a key role in the determination of high-level semantic processes and the development of emerging systems and applications, such as mobile phone telecommunication and hearing aids. In the era of deep learning, speech enhancement methods based on neural networks have seen great success, mainly operating on the log-power spectra. Although these approaches surpass the need for exhaustive feature extraction and selection, it is still unclear whether they target the important sound characteristics related to speech perception. In this study, we propose a novel set of auditory-motivated features for single-channel speech enhancement by fusing temporal envelope and temporal fine structure information in the context of vocoder-like processing. A causal gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network is employed to recover the low-frequency amplitude modulations of speech. Experimental results indicate that the exploited system achieves considerable gains for normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners, in terms of objective intelligibility and quality metrics. The proposed auditory-motivated feature set achieved better objective intelligibility results compared to the conventional log-magnitude spectrogram features, while mixed results were observed for simulated listeners with hearing loss. Finally, we demonstrate that the proposed analysis/synthesis framework provides satisfactory reconstruction accuracy of speech signals.

The impact of temporal fine structure and signal envelope on auditory motion perception.

The majority of psychoacoustic research investigating sound localization has utilized stationary sources, yet most naturally occurring sounds are in motion, either because the sound source itself moves, or the listener does. In normal hearing (NH) listeners, previous research showed the extent to which sound duration and velocity impact the ability of listeners to detect sound movement. By contrast, little is known about how listeners with hearing impairments perceive moving sounds; the only study to date comparing the performance of NH and bilateral cochlear implant (BiCI) listeners has demonstrated significantly poorer performance on motion detection tasks in BiCI listeners. Cochlear implants, auditory protheses offered to profoundly deaf individuals for access to spoken language, retain the signal envelope (ENV), while discarding temporal fine structure (TFS) of the original acoustic input. As a result, BiCI users do not have access to low-frequency TFS cues, which have previously been shown to be crucial for sound localization in NH listeners. Instead, BiCI listeners seem to rely on ENV cues for sound localization, especially level cues. Given that NH and BiCI listeners differentially utilize ENV and TFS information, the present study aimed to investigate the usefulness of these cues for auditory motion perception. We created acoustic chimaera stimuli, which allowed us to test the relative contributions of ENV and TFS to auditory motion perception. Stimuli were either moving or stationary, presented to NH listeners in free field. The task was to track the perceived sound location. We found that removing low-frequency TFS reduces sensitivity to sound motion, and fluctuating speech envelopes strongly biased the judgment of sounds to be stationary. Our findings yield a possible explanation as to why BiCI users struggle to identify sound motion, and provide a first account of cues important to the functional aspect of auditory motion perception.

Uncertain Emotion Discrimination Differences Between Musicians and Non-musicians Is Determined by Fine Structure Association: Hilbert Transform Psychophysics.

Humans perceive musical sound as a complex phenomenon, which is known to induce an emotional response. The cues used to perceive emotion in music have not been unequivocally elucidated. Here, we sought to identify the attributes of sound that confer an emotion to music and determine if professional musicians have different musical emotion perception than non-musicians. The objective was to determine which sound cues are used to resolve emotional signals. Happy or sad classical music excerpts modified in fine structure or envelope conveying different degrees of emotional certainty were presented. Certainty was determined by identification of the emotional characteristic presented during a forced-choice discrimination task. Participants were categorized as good or poor performers (n = 32, age 21.16 ± 2.59 SD) and in a separate group as musicians in the first or last year of music education at a conservatory (n = 32, age 21.97 ± 2.42). We found that temporal fine structure information is essential for correct emotional identification. Non-musicians used less fine structure information to discriminate emotion in music compared with musicians. The present psychophysical experiments revealed what cues are used to resolve emotional signals and how they differ between non-musicians and musically educated individuals.

Binaural unmasking with temporal envelope and fine structure in listeners with cochlear implants.

For normal-hearing (NH) listeners, interaural information in both temporal envelope and temporal fine structure contribute to binaural unmasking of target signals in background noise; however, in many conditions low-frequency interaural information in temporal fine structure produces greater binaural unmasking. For bilateral cochlear-implant (CI) listeners, interaural information in temporal envelope contributes to binaural unmasking; however, the effect of encoding temporal fine structure information in electrical pulse timing (PT) is not fully understood. In this study, diotic and dichotic signal detection thresholds were measured in CI listeners using bilaterally synchronized single-electrode stimulation for conditions in which the temporal envelope was presented without temporal fine structure encoded (constant-rate pulses) or with temporal fine structure encoded (pulses timed to peaks of the temporal fine structure). CI listeners showed greater binaural unmasking at 125 pps with temporal fine structure encoded than without. There was no significant effect of encoding temporal fine structure at 250 pps. A similar pattern of performance was shown by NH listeners presented with acoustic pulse trains designed to simulate CI stimulation. The results suggest a trade-off across low rates between interaural information obtained from temporal envelope and that obtained from temporal fine structure encoded in PT.

Fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination of one complex tone in the presence of another: The role of excitation pattern and temporal fine structure cues

The perceptual segregation of simultaneous harmonic complex tones depends partly on differences in the fundamental frequency (F0) between those tones. Human listeners have some ability to group together harmonics of a given F0 and segregate them from harmonics of a different F0. This paper reviews studies of the ability to detect changes in F0 of one complex tone in the presence of another complex tone with the same or a different mean F0. The studies include conditions where the harmonics in the complex tones would have been resolved, partially resolved, or completely unresolved. Modeling using excitation patterns and “summary autocorrelation” and “stabilized auditory image” models suggests that while excitation-pattern cues are useful for complex tones with resolved harmonics, the use of temporal fine structure (phase locking) information is required to account for the small F0DLs obtained when harmonics are barely, if at all, resolved.

Effects of Age and Hearing Loss on the Discrimination of Amplitude and Frequency Modulation for 2- and 10-Hz Rates.

Detection of frequency modulation (FM) with rate = 10 Hz may depend on conversion of FM to amplitude modulation (AM) in the cochlea, while detection of 2-Hz FM may depend on the use of temporal fine structure (TFS) information. TFS processing may worsen with greater age and hearing loss while AM processing probably does not. A two-stage experiment was conducted to test these ideas while controlling for the effects of detection efficiency. Stage 1 measured psychometric functions for the detection of AM alone and FM alone imposed on a 1-kHz carrier, using 2- and 10-Hz rates. Stage 2 assessed the discrimination of AM from FM at the same modulation rate when the detectability of the AM alone and FM alone was equated. Discrimination was better for the 2-Hz than for the 10-Hz rate for all young normal-hearing subjects and for some older subjects with normal hearing at 1 kHz. Other older subjects with normal hearing showed no clear difference in AM-FM discrimination for the 2- and 10-Hz rates, as was the case for most older hearing-impaired subjects. The results suggest that the ability to use TFS cues is reduced for some older people and most hearing-impaired people.

The Effects of Static and Moving Spectral Ripple Sensitivity on Unaided and Aided Speech Perception in Noise.

This study evaluated whether certain spectral ripple conditions were more informative than others in predicting ecologically relevant unaided and aided speech outcomes. A quasi-experimental study design was used to evaluate 67 older adult hearing aid users with bilateral, symmetrical hearing loss. Speech perception in noise was tested under conditions of unaided and aided, auditory-only and auditory-visual, and 2 types of noise. Predictors included age, audiometric thresholds, audibility, hearing aid compression, and modulation depth detection thresholds for moving (4-Hz) or static (0-Hz) 2-cycle/octave spectral ripples applied to carriers of broadband noise or 2000-Hz low- or high-pass filtered noise. A principal component analysis of the modulation detection data found that broadband and low-pass static and moving ripple detection thresholds loaded onto the first factor whereas high-pass static and moving ripple detection thresholds loaded onto a second factor. A linear mixed model revealed that audibility and the first factor (reflecting broadband and low-pass static and moving ripples) were significantly associated with speech perception performance. Similar results were found for unaided and aided speech scores. The interactions between speech conditions were not significant, suggesting that the relationship between ripples and speech perception was consistent regardless of visual cues or noise condition. High-pass ripple sensitivity was not correlated with speech understanding. The results suggest that, for hearing aid users, poor speech understanding in noise and sensitivity to both static and slow-moving ripples may reflect deficits in the same underlying auditory processing mechanism. Significant factor loadings involving ripple stimuli with low-frequency content may suggest an impaired ability to use temporal fine structure information in the stimulus waveform. Support is provided for the use of spectral ripple testing to predict speech perception outcomes in clinical settings.

Effects of Training on Lateralization for Simulations of Cochlear Implants and Single-Sided Deafness.

While cochlear implantation has benefitted many patients with single-sided deafness (SSD), there is great variability in cochlear implant (CI) outcomes and binaural performance remains poorer than that of normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Differences in sound quality across ears—temporal fine structure (TFS) information with acoustic hearing vs. coarse spectro-temporal envelope information with electric hearing—may limit integration of acoustic and electric patterns. Binaural performance may also be limited by inter-aural mismatch between the acoustic input frequency and the place of stimulation in the cochlea. SSD CI patients must learn to accommodate these differences between acoustic and electric stimulation to maximize binaural performance. It is possible that training may increase and/or accelerate accommodation and further improve binaural performance. In this study, we evaluated lateralization training in NH subjects listening to broad simulations of SSD CI signal processing. A 16-channel vocoder was used to simulate the coarse spectro-temporal cues available with electric hearing; the degree of inter-aural mismatch was varied by adjusting the simulated insertion depth (SID) to be 25 mm (SID25), 22 mm (SID22) and 19 mm (SID19) from the base of the cochlea. Lateralization was measured using headphones and head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). Baseline lateralization was measured for unprocessed speech (UN) delivered to the left ear to simulate SSD and for binaural performance with the acoustic ear combined with the 16-channel vocoders (UN+SID25, UN+SID22 and UN+SID19). After completing baseline measurements, subjects completed six lateralization training exercises with the UN+SID22 condition, after which performance was re-measured for all baseline conditions. Post-training performance was significantly better than baseline for all conditions (p < 0.05 in all cases), with no significant difference in training benefits among conditions. Given that there was no significant difference between the SSD and the SSD CI conditions before or after training, the results suggest that NH listeners were unable to integrate TFS and coarse spectro-temporal cues across ears for lateralization, and that inter-aural mismatch played a secondary role at best. While lateralization training may benefit SSD CI patients, the training may largely improve spectral analysis with the acoustic ear alone, rather than improve integration of acoustic and electric hearing.

Neural Representation Of Harmonic Single Sideband Encoder In Inferior Colliculus Of Guinea Pigs.

The supplement of harmonics and temporal fine structure (TFS) information has been verified to increase the tone recognition of cochlear implants (CIs) users. However, the limited resolution of spectral and temporal in electric hearing hindered the delivery of TFS information. Harmonic single sideband encoder (HSSE) can explicitly track the harmonics of complex sounds and linearly transform harmonics into modulators conveying both amplitude modulation (AM) and TFS information to electrodes. However, it keeps urgent to develop fast, objective and quantitative methods to evaluate the TFS representation in higher level centers of auditory pathway to HSSE strategy. The study built an IC mathematical model based on spectro-temporal receptive field (STRF) by recording the vivo neural responses of inferior colliculus (IC) to a couple of original Chinese Mandarin speech and analyzing the FS representation on IC. Finally the study predicted neural response to HSSE coded speech. The results showed that the IC neuronal response evoked by HSSE coded speech contained FS information.

Temporal Fine Structure Processing, Pitch, and Speech Perception in Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients.

The aim of the study was to investigate the link between temporal fine structure (TFS) processing, pitch, and speech perception performance in adult cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including bimodal listeners who may benefit better low-frequency (LF) temporal coding in the contralateral ear. The study participants were 43 adult CI recipients (23 unilateral, 6 bilateral, and 14 bimodal listeners). Two new LF pitch perception tests-harmonic intonation (HI) and disharmonic intonation (DI)-were used to evaluate TFS sensitivity. HI and DI were designed to estimate a difference limen for discrimination of tone changes based on harmonic or inharmonic pitch glides. Speech perception was assessed using the newly developed Italian Sentence Test with Adaptive Randomized Roving level (STARR) test where sentences relevant to everyday contexts were presented at low, medium, and high levels in a fluctuating background noise to estimate a speech reception threshold (SRT). Although TFS and STARR performances in the majority of CI recipients were much poorer than those of hearing people reported in the literature, a considerable intersubject variability was observed. For CI listeners, median just noticeable differences were 27.0 and 147.0 Hz for HI and DI, respectively. HI outcomes were significantly better than those for DI. Median STARR score was 14.8 dB. Better performers with speech reception thresholds less than 20 dB had a median score of 8.6 dB. A significant effect of age was observed for both HI/DI tests, suggesting that TFS sensitivity tended to worsen with increasing age. CI pure-tone thresholds and duration of profound deafness were significantly correlated with STARR performance. Bimodal users showed significantly better TFS and STARR performance for bimodal listening than for their CI-only condition. Median bimodal gains were 33.0 Hz for the HI test and 95.0 Hz for the DI test. DI outcomes in bimodal users revealed a significant correlation with unaided hearing thresholds for octave frequencies lower than 1000 Hz. Median STARR scores were 17.3 versus 8.1 dB for CI only and bimodal listening, respectively. STARR performance was significantly correlated with HI findings for CI listeners and with those of DI for bimodal listeners. LF pitch perception was found to be abnormal in the majority of adult CI recipients, confirming poor TFS processing of CIs. Similarly, the STARR findings reflected a common performance deterioration with the HI/DI tests, suggesting the cause probably being a lack of access to TFS information. Contralateral hearing aid users obtained a remarkable bimodal benefit for all tests. Such results highlighted the importance of TFS cues for challenging speech perception and the relevance to everyday listening conditions. HI/DI and STARR tests show promise for gaining insights into how TFS and speech perception are being limited and may guide the customization of CI program parameters and support the fine tuning of bimodal listening.

Binaural sensitivity to temporal fine structure and lateralization ability in children with suspected (central) auditory processing disorder

ObjectivePrevious studies have shown that a subgroup of children with suspected (central) auditory processing disorder (SusCAPD) have insufficient ability to use binaural cues to benefit from spatial processing. Thus, they experience considerable listening difficulties in challenging auditory environments, such as classrooms. Some researchers have also indicated the probable role of binaural temporal fine structure (TFS) in the perceptual segregation of target signal from noise and hence in speech perception in noise. Therefore, in the present study, in order to further investigate the underlying reason for listening problems against background noise in this group of children, their performance was measured using binaural TFS sensitivity test (TFS-LF) as well as behavioral auditory lateralization in noise test, both of which are based on binaural temporal cues processing. MethodsParticipants in this analytical study included 91 children with normal hearing and no listening problems and 41 children (9–12 years old) with SusCAPD who found it challenging to understand speech in noise. Initially, the ability to use binaural TFS was measured at three frequencies (250, 500 and 750Hz) in both the groups, and the results of preliminary evaluations were compared between normal children and those with SusCAPD who participated in the study. Thereafter, the binaural performance of the 16 children with SusCAPD who had higher thresholds than the normal group at all three frequencies tested in TFS-LF test was examined using the lateralization test in 7 spatial locations. ResultsTotal 16 of the 41 children with SusCAPD who participated in this study (39%) showed poor performance on the TFS-LF test at all three frequencies, compared to both normal children and other children in the APD group (p<0.05). Furthermore, children in the APD group with binaural TFS coding deficits at all three frequencies revealed significant differences in the lateralization test results compared to normal children (p<0.05). ConclusionFindings of the current study demonstrated that one of the underlying causes for the difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments experienced by a subgroup of children with SusCAPD can be the reduced ability to benefit from binaural TFS information. This study also showed that a reduced ability to use binaural TFS cues in the group of children with SusCAPD was accompanied by reduced binaural processing abilities in the lateralization test which also admit the presence of binaural temporal processing deficits in this group of children.

Neural representation of interaural correlation in human auditory brainstem: Comparisons between temporal-fine structure and envelope

Central processing of interaural correlation (IAC), which depends on the precise representation of acoustic signals from the two ears, is essential for both localization and recognition of auditory objects. A complex soundwave is initially filtered by the peripheral auditory system into multiple narrowband waves, which are further decomposed into two functionally distinctive components: the quickly-varying temporal-fine structure (TFS) and the slowly-varying envelope. In rats, a narrowband noise can evoke auditory-midbrain frequency-following responses (FFRs) that contain both the TFS component (FFRTFS) and the envelope component (FFREnv), which represent the TFS and envelope of the narrowband noise, respectively. These two components are different in sensitivity to the interaural time disparity. In human listeners, the present study investigated whether the FFRTFS and FFREnv components of brainstem FFRs to a narrowband noise are different in sensitivity to IAC and whether there are potential brainstem mechanisms underlying the integration of the two components. The results showed that although both the amplitude of FFRTFS and that of FFREnv were significantly affected by shifts of IAC between 1 and 0, the stimulus-to-response correlation for FFRTFS, but not that for FFREnv, was sensitive to the IAC shifts. Moreover, in addition to the correlation between the binaurally evoked FFRTFS and FFREnv, the correlation between the IAC-shift-induced change of FFRTFS and that of FFREnv was significant. Thus, the TFS information is more precisely represented in the human auditory brainstem than the envelope information, and the correlation between FFRTFS and FFREnv for the same narrowband noise suggest a brainstem binding mechanism underlying the perceptual integration of the TFS and envelope signals.
